I've been thinking about mother of learning, and what genres of video games Zorian's story would be most apt for, and to my horror one of those point and click escape room games is becoming more and more appropriate the more I think of it.

#yikes the original title of this book...#researching this one led me down a few adhd-induced rabbit holes #like this book alludes to a character being eaten by a red herring at the start. but it's not a 'red herring' trope. he actually does drown #interestingly- the idea of a 'red herring' plot device predates this book by 70 years. so agatha christie was surely aware of the #connotations of a red herring in a murder mystery. if anything making the red herring allusion unexpectedly true is a red herring in itself #I also found an entry for this guy on “sexypedia.fandom.com” which mentioned that he fulfils the “johnlocked” trope - meaning that he and #vera are often paired together despite not being romantically involved in canon. the trope name is indeed after john and sherlock #which is frankly bizarre. the phenomenon of two characters being arbitrarily paired together without a canon basis is a very real issue #but in what world are sherlock and john an example of that?#anyway #and then there were none #agatha christie #classic literature #polls #queer #new post

As someone who genuinely loves the terrible relationship between Captain & Keen and also an unrepentant member of the Captain fanclub, not in spite of him being a terrible person, but because he's a terrible person, I feel so absolutely vindicated by the fact that it's confirmed the boy did actually fall in love with Keen and that still changed absolutely nothing about his behaviors. I knew the whole time he was catching real feelings and I knew it was also going to end TERRIBLY because that wasn't going to make him be a good person to Keen, or anyone else, anyway.

Actually I’ve come to the conclusion that Cynthia would like Kingdom Hearts for the exact same reason she likes Graces f (the homoerotic tension,,,,,,)

#fave spotting #peter wyngarde #overseas press club exclusive!#jason king #classic tv #1957 #abpc #the george polk case #gregorios staktopoulos #george polk #for more on this strange little series see the tags on a prev alfred burke fave spotting post #i mentioned at that time my doubts that all of these stories were quite as 'torn from the headlines' as the narrator would have us believe #but this one is certainly true: george polk was a real american journalist and he was really murdered in Greece during the civil war there #that part is certainly delivered fairly accurately; it is‚ however‚ kind of background to this old tv dramatisation of events #which is more concerned with capturing the guilty party (SPOILERS ig for a near 70yr old show nobody will watch lol): it's Peter of course #but that's where we hit a weird snag; bc his character here is again very much (for once) based on a real person‚ Gregorios Staktopoulos #but Gregorios' confession was almost certainly obtained via torture‚ not the play of wits shown here; his conviction was also‚ to say the #least‚ unsafe. evidence brought in that trial has been shown to be false‚ and it's actually debated now that Polk was not killed by the #Communist forces (whom Gregorios worked with) at all‚ but by right wing elements affiliated with the Greek government... as recently as #2004 his widow was campaigning for a posthumous retrial to clear his name. so yes an unfortunate footnote in old tv: when you #actually DO try to tell a true story‚ just be aware that the facts you're taking as true may not always be what they appear #the real Gregorios was indeed sentenced to life in prison as in this ep‚ but some relief there in that his sentence was reduced and #(perhaps in recognition of the shady legalities surrounding his conviction) he was released in 1960 and returned to work as a journalist #the George Polk Awards for american journalism are still given today which is nice #imdb list this ep as The George Polk Story but the onscreen title is definitely Case

new who is like 'this trend is BAD and i'm going to PREACH A SPEECH about why it's going to RUIN EVERYTHING' and it's so much more exhausting

#wren rambles #doctor who #this brought on by me watching orphan 55 #which had SUCH a fun concept #and then absolutely FACEPLANTED with the doctor moralizing at the end #like yes doctor who has ALWAYS explored topical and political issues #but never is there a definitive I Am Telling You This Is Right message #whereas now I just had to sit here and watch 13 preaching at me?#ughghg #explore the idea but don't shove it down my throat #classic who had an episode (Ice Warriors) exploring climate change as one aspect of the story #talking about how all the plants were removed and that messed with the atmosphere etc.#but that was just a SMALL PART of the whole episode and it was never outright condemned (it was made clear it was BAD and the root problems #but that was never the BIG ISSUE the Doctor Lectured His Companions about) (not that victoria or jamie could do anything lol)#plus this feeds into my issues with 13's run (which started during 12's somewhat but less so)#where the Doctor is painted as the Narratively Right one #where when she says something that's what the narrative wants you to BELIEVE #which coming from Two and Three's run is WILD #because Two is chaotic and murderous when he thinks he's right #and he's manipulative and deceptive at times #and Three is selfish and pouty and rude #and don't get me wrong Thirteen has her issues and I lvoe them #HOWEVER. she's pretty much always RIGHT she's the Word Of God when it comes to moral things #and this more than anything is my biggest issues with Modern Who #mostly 12 and 13's eras #so i hope we move out of that somewhat in the new era but i'm not super holding up hopes (especially after star beast)#maybe one day i'll write a proper full article about it but GOSH #i don't watch this show to be preached at. I watch it for a fun/tragic scifi romp and also to see interesting ideas explored #and reflect the climate of the world and how society influences media #explore the idea of climate change turning the world into a post apocalypse! that's such a fun idea and topical!
