" Blondie believes that she will never fit in. she's no social outcast or anything- but when she compares herself to her friends and classmates she begins to feel like a puzzle piece trying to fit into a jenga tower. so she squeezes and bends and rips herself to fit into any tiny crack she can, she desperately curates a perfect persona hiding everything that doesn't fit the mold she has created for herself.
after a drop in her mental health she starts wandering the forests behind her home at night, she knows its risky to go out so late and especially to a place so dangerous- but that's the point. she would never admit this morbid intention, admitting that's what she's doing is something she never wants to do. shes not that kind of person, she doesn't have those kinds of issues- instead she pretends she just wants to feel the cold breeze on her skin, or admire the peaceful quiet the night brings.
on one of these dark nights she finds a girl, she lay bare and unconscious on the ground, her shallow breathing being the only indication she's even alive. blondie quickly wakes the girl, she's heard the dark news stories of young women who get taken to private locations, assaulted and left for dead by their attackers. when the girl comes to, she looks at blondie with confusion. "can you hear me? are you alright? do you need medical attention?" blondie asks, the girl squints "i can hear you, im fine"
"are you sure? you're laying in the forest naked." the girl looks down at herself and around before letting out a hum " do you know how to get to-" her brows furrow "i need to go back to-" a look of distress washes over her. Blondie raises a brow at the weird behavior "i don't think you're fine, did you bash your head or something?" the girl looks to her with tears in her eyes "i cant remember my home, i don't remember who i am or how i got here" "
During a bout of severe depression, Blondie discovers a strange girl in the forest who claims to have lost her memory. the two team up to try to recover the lost memories and help the lost girl get home, but as they search for any clues, the two grow close. blondie learns to see both life and herself in a different way.
meanwhile as they delve deeper into the mystery things only become more strange, with nonexistent answers and constant dead ends, the lost girl starts to worry she may never know the truth or return home.

With Blood and Rage of Crimson Red.
Jessica: We made such a great team Jaune.
Jaune: Yeah we sure did. And, uh. I'm sorry if I did anything wrong. I know I'm not exactly anyone's first choice for a teammate.
Jessica: Oh no. *grabs Jaune's hand* In fact you were great. Without your support, my anxiety would have overtaken me and we would have been in a lot more trouble.
Jaune: R-really. Am I really that useful to you? *looks longingly at Jessica's eyes*
Jessica: Yes of course. You have been so kind and patient with me. Without you I don't think I'll... *their faces inches away from each others*
Jaune: Jess...
Jessica: Jaune...
Tumblr media
Yang: Don't look rubes but I think the new girl are NTRing Jaune away from you...
Ruby:
Tumblr media
*portal opening through time and space*
Razer: Ruby Rose. You have shown to posses great rage. This red ring of rage calls out to you. Say the Red Lantern Oath and all its power will belong to you.
Ruby: WITH BLOOD AND RAGE OF CRIMSON RED!
Jessica: W-wait someone should stop her!
Jaune: What's going on?
Ruby: RIPPED FROM A CORPSE SO FRESHLY DEAD!
Jessica: Oh no. If she finish saying the oath the transformation will then be complete and she will become a Red Lantern.
Jaune: Is that a bad thing?
Jessica: Muy Malo!!!
Jaune: I take it's no bueno, then?
Jessica: We need to stop her from putting on that ring. Regular Ruby is already powerful enough but if she put on the Red Ring then no force in the universe will be powerful enough to stop her.
Yang: Don't have to tell me twice. I'm on it!
*zap*
Tumblr media
Hey what's the Big idea!?
Razer: If you think I would allow you to harm another fellow corps. Member then you have another thing coming blondie.
Yang: Bring it pointy!
Ruby: TOGETHER WITH OUR HELLISH HATE!
Jessica: Jaune! Me and Yang will try to get the attention of the Red Lantern. Meanwhile you should try to stop Ruby from putting on the red ring.
Jaune: Wait how am I supposed to stop her?!
Yang: Adapt! Improvise!
Jaune: That still doesnt tell me how to stop her.
Ruby: WE WILL BURN YOU ALL THAT IS YOUR FATE!
Jessica: Quick, Jaune do something! Ruby just finished with the oath.
Jaune: Oh no what do I do, what do I do?... That's it. Desperate times calls for desperate measure... I'm sorry Ruby. *kiss*
Tumblr media
Ruby: *kiss Jaune back*
Tumblr media
Yang: Damn....
Jessica: 😢
Razer: What the F...
Jaune: So are you okay now Ruby. No getting angry, no more going red?
Ruby: Hmmm... I maybe need another kiss to help me from going angry again. 😘
Jaune: Ha, ha. I think you're fine now.
Ruby: *giggle* Oh Jaune I'm not joking when I said I needed another kiss. 😌
Jaune: You're such a kidder Ruby.
Ruby: WITH BLOOD AND RAGE OF CRIMSON RED!
Jaune: N-no, no wait! Damn it you win Rubes. *kiss Ruby passionately*
Ruby: Oh baby that's the stuff. 🥴
Jaune: S-so Ruby I kissed you just as you wanted so please promise me you will not turn into a red lantern.
Ruby: *sensually whisper in Jaune's ears* Then we should continue this in bed❤~
Jaune: W-wait Ruby don't I at least have a say in this?
Ruby: Yes. You got to say my name over and over again. Now come here lover boy. *picks up Jaune*
Jessica: W-what are you doing to Jaune? Please don't hurt him...
Ruby: Oh don't you worry about him. 😉
Jessica can only watch in silence as the tiny red reaper took the boy she have a crush on her shoulder like he is some sort of a prize stuffed animal into her room. After a few minutes the sounds of Jaune's screaming and moaning soon follows.
Yang: Uhhh I don't think what happened inside is entirely consentual.
Jessica: *staring intensely at the door* 😳
Razer: Uh.. I will try to take back the ring the first chance I have. *sigh* Atrocitus will not like this one bit.

Hey, just a heads up, archive.org needs your help!
I mostly use openlibrary.org which is already AWESOME. They're part of archive.org and an actual legal digital library - AND INTERNATIONAL
Right now (till 31st Dec 2022), archive.org has matching campaign that will TRIPLE the impact of each donation
Do donate! And then borrow a book from this library, or watch an old Film Noir movie!
Donate and, if you'd like, let other users know how archive.org has helped you! Or how you've helped it!
Mine's below! 💖
I found out about it during my Hero Academia phase so cleaned up and create pages for the mangas
And then, some time later, there were borrowable books for them! 🤩
I've watched 12 Angry Men — my first, and as of yet only, black and white movie.
I've read Freakonomics in its entirety thanks to it. I was so obsessed with the book I even read it on my phone in a very user unfriendly way because I still don't know what app works with archive.org.
For an assignment, I borrowed What You Must Think of Me: A Firsthand Account of One Teenager's Experience with Social Anxiety Disorder. It's actually not that long or boring. Unlike what books my classmates chose.

How do you think the "main" crew (Apple, Raven, Cerise, Briar, Ashlynn, etc) would react to being able to hear the Narrators?- Narrator Headcanon Anon
How indeed, lol
Apple: *Very concerned about what this means but trying to remain polite as ever*
Raven:"...WHAT? Huh. Cool."
Cerise: "Wait, they know all our secrets?" *pulls hood closer. But I would love if when she's alone she just talks with someone other than family with her ears out
Briar: "OMG, that's ridonculous!"
Ashlynn: *sweet about it and tells them about the next shoe sale*
Blondie: "You're reporters just like me! Know of any juicy news happening around Ever After?"
Dexter: *existential crisis aka the thinking maths meme* "I'm so confused. I-I-I don't feel so good."
Daring: "The more the merrier, more awesome viewers for awesome Daring Charming" *winks and finger guns at the camera where the narrators are*
Hunter: "Uhhh, cool, cool" *concerned they'll spill the beans about the gift he's working on for Ashlynn*
Lizzie: "Well, of course they exist! Just because you can't hear someone doesn't mean they're not there."
Alistair, Bunny, Chase, even Courtly: *Agree with Lizzie*
Also, everyone who isn't a Wonderlandian, and I mean EVERYONE, would be wondering what other "mad" or Wonderlandian things they were wrong about

I think this is the post that started my friendship with Narrator Headcanon Anon iirc 🥰🥰🥰
#2
The kind of friendship these 3 would have:
Tumblr media
Sparrow: *crying after spilling something on his new Nikes*
Humphrey: get me baking soda, vinegar, and a toothbrush, stat!
Alistair: *with tears in his eyes and consoling a sobbing Sparrow* I'm here bro, we'll get through this together
Based on a post I can't find "whoever thinks only girls are obsessed with shoes has never met a teenage boy"

2/2 ‘so now that he won the bet, he’s gonna fuck Baywatch and then what? Business as usual?’ It just showed that Justin was bailed out by Jen and Ben ‘fucking Ben. You had one fucking job! Imagine if itd be Jen and Brian. I love Jen so much and i need her to go visit Brian and talk shit about literally anyone or anything.’ The camera is now on Lindsay venting and he goes ‘i bet my kidney, its Brian that she’s using as her therapist. HA I FUCKING KNEW IT (brian hits his head) when i asked for someone to knock sense into him this wasnt what i meant but ill take it…i can’t believe i agree with Lindsay about the bet. *pauses tv and jumps up* YOURE GONNA THINK IM CRAZY BUT! Remember how when Brian was robbed, she told him he lost Justin and wrote down his name next to his valuables? And now she once again told him he lost something far more valuable: JUSTIN! That’s a fucking parallel, right? Im right! Im a genius! Now come on Lindsay, force him to get back with Blondie’ BTW all of Mel and Lindsay’s in house separated scenes he just groans at and watches with a side eye. And we are at the Brandon/Brian scene *starts laughing* ‘Baywatch, literally nobody wants you. You’re the wrong Blondie. I can’t believe Brian kept the bike after the race…and just let it stay at the loft. Imagine it’s his little “i did that” souvenir. Wait thats not the point of this, the point is, i hate this bet, i hate mr baywatch and this is all bullshit. Brian, baby, please win back Justin. All you guys gotta do is just talk and get on the same page…maybe some new rules since someoneeeee kept breaking them’ and Brian is about to kick out brandon ‘baywatch here sure thinks a lot about himself. (Brandon says brian’s years are numbered) fellas, you do know someone will always wanna fuck you, right? Maybe not you but Brian? For sure. Why isn’t he..OH HES KICKING HIM OUT! ITS NOT THE RIGHT BLONDIE! That’s the reason, right?’ ‘Okay so Drew and Emmett are back together, not what i asked for it but okay. Now give me what i fucking asked for’ scene cuts to ben and Mikey ‘OH FOR FUCKS SAKE! So hunter is just gone? They really wrote him out? Can they do the same for Mike?’ And we are now with Brian at the club ‘he sure does love that sleeveless shirt. He let Baywatch back in? (brian says the locked doors line) look at that fucking smile. He knows he’s always gonna be the best no matter who the fuck comes in and tries to dethrone him. It’ll never fucking happen’ After that he turned to me and went ‘please say this baywatch story is done. I hated it. But also in a small tiny way, i liked that i think it made Brian realize that he can’t escape growing old and lowkey accepted it in that last part. But please say its done. There’s only a few episodes left and we have more important stuff to do’
YOURE GONNA THINK IM CRAZY BUT! Remember how when Brian was robbed, she told him he lost Justin and wrote down his name next to his valuables? And now she once again told him he lost something far more valuable: JUSTIN! That’s a fucking parallel, right? Im right! Im a genius! NGL He is a genius. Great parallel. Which I've never noticed because I haven't watched S5 much at all.
I loveeeee him pointing out the bike as a souvenir. That's so not Brian and also entirely him at the same time. Like the part of himself that nobody gets to see.
Brandon is not the right Blondie. That's always been my theory of that scene.
CAN THEY WRITE OUT MIKEY I dieeeeeeee (your brother is going to feel sooooo guilty when Mikey gets injured)
Only a few episodes left and more important things to do. Like tear everyone's hearts apart.

inspiration from the tiktok audio “ I don’t love you i’m just passing the time “
This was never about you. Honestly you were surprised it took you so long to notice.
No that was a lie you weren’t surprised because it was his fault he never told you flat out that he wasn’t expecting much from you. It’s not that he wasn’t interested he just — he didn’t know what to do. Of course he thought you were beautiful and that’s what scared him but at the same time gave him the energy to talk to you.
His personality was known for leading him to talk to beautiful people.
He was sure he’d never date you because, his heart belonged to kiyoko .
No one could ever top her or at least that’s what he thought until you came along. Here you were in all your beauty putting anyone else to shame that dared to stand next to you.
You were perfect for him and after a couple months you were all his. He adored you even after highschool when you two finally decided to move in together.
he told you every day how much he loved you. His love even trickling down to his actions when he would ask you to do couple things appearing out of no where with a request
‘ y/n how about black hair dye huh ? wanna try something new together i’ll color my hair too ! ‘
you instantly agreeing to every ask all of them ranging from
‘ hey y/n , have you always been able to see? are you sure because you were squinting just awhile ago we can get you glasses I mean I don’t care about price if it’s for you —no no I think we should—let’s do black square rims ? i think they would fit your pretty face ‘
to
‘ babe when you do your makeup this time try some face designs their so cool I see them all the time on my instagram here — can I try ‘ him smiling before sitting next to you and guiding the eyeliner out of your reluctant hand a tight smile drawn across your face
Him smiling when you turned to the mirror to see a small black dot next to your lips. ‘ you look so pretty with it ‘
You hadn’t noticed until the volleyball reunion when you sat in a circle with all the old members and tsukishimas mouth spilling out his harsh words unbothered by your reaction “ why the hell do we have two kiyokos now? “
his glasses moving down on his nose as he spoke again “ y/n i’m sure we only need one I personally prefer the original she looks more “ his head tilted as his eyes ran over your new look “ natural“
“ yeah I was actually wondering that but I didn’t wanna bring it up first I um y/n are you trying to look like kiyoko or “
your small cough coming out and drawing all the attention back to you as you felt the same woman turn to face you her own eyes now seeing what the others were talking about “ of — of course not I — “
“ eh what the fuck “ your boyfriends voice coming out loudly as he now sat pissed off with the group “ are you pricks trying to say I couldn’t get over kiyoko or some shit “
“ what what no tanaka-san we “ sugawaras voice coming out to try to let the tension fizzle out
“ no because I’m feeling like there’s something being unsaid here“ he grunted “ if anyone has anything else to say badly about my s/o then they should just fuck off “
“ tanaka “ you screamed
“ no i’m tired of people thinking I can’t get shimizu out of my head I can —I can and I will “
“ y-you will ? “
“ I mean I have “ his eyes locked with yours as he spoke low “ I have “
The room grew quiet as he stood the chair he sat in being pushed back as he walked off you standing up too offering a small smile to everyone in the circle “ sorry if you’ll excuse me “
“ your good—I think he needs you a little bit more than we do right now“ daichis voice came out a bit more concerned than he wanted it too
Your figure being seen getting smaller and smaller as you ran after your boyfriend to the kitchen grabbing his arm loosely “ babe I “
“ let go y/n “
“ but I — tanaka what’s up why are you acting like this “
“ I said let the fuck go y/n “ his voice boomed as he yanked his arm from you your body moving back a little due to the strength he’d pulled it back with “ i’m going to go get a drink I can’t handle those assholes alone “
“ your — you’re not alone tanaka i’m with you ill handle them with you “
A smile slowly spreading across your face when he stopped moving only to turn over his shoulder biting his lip as he stood thinking to himself his hand pointing to the kitchen “ for some reason that only makes me need a drink even more “
You nodded softly as he rolled his eyes at you “ you do understand correct ? “
“ yeah yeah no of course “ you smiled tightly as he walked off and you walked back to the crowded living room trying to contain your tears that wanted to spill so badly usually when he acted like this he’d drink himself to sleep.
You sat down on the floor letting yourself join the huddle as everyone spoke you getting lost in your thoughts. It wasn’t often that this happened but when it did it never went the way you would want it to. He would always get distant instead of becoming clingy like you would rather. He’d become meaner with his words instead of thinking of you before speaking like he usually would.
“ prick only ever thinking of himself —a stupid child“ you whispered out thinking of your boyfriend and his future actions that you could already predict
“ yeah shoyos gotta be— the asshole requested it “ kageyama whispered to you as you turned to see hinata sitting across from you waving to you when he met your gaze making you speak softly with a smile “ sweet “
“ hey y/n wanna play dare or dare with us ? “
you shook your head laughing a bit “ what are we teenagers again“ you laughed a bit louder “ but no i’ll — i’ll pass “
“ aw come on your the only other chick here besides kiyoko “
“ no no no you guys go ahead i’ll just watch “
everyone sighed as they began the game you hearing loud steps pound through the house as your boyfriends loud voice cut through the laughter “ what you pricks started without me “
“ yeah uh just join tanaka- san “
“ fuck yeah “ he wobbled over to sit next to daichi not locking eyes with you only smiling at everyone around the table taking a long swig of the liquor bottle he’d sat on the table in his adventure over.
The air that was once tense seemed to calm down as everyone started drinking and suggesting dares. You smiling as you looked at everyone this had to be the best night of your life finally getting to see all your friends again after kageayma and hinata traveled non stop and everyone else never had the time to have a party.
You patted yourself on the back seeing everyone having such a good night.
“ ok ok last dare “ nishinoya burped out as he shakily raised his hand already drunk off his ass his words sluring as he spoke “ I dare tanaka—san to “ he took another gulp from the bottle only to push it aside and open the new one that laid dormant between the two of you “ to kiss the prettiest person in the room “
Everyones eyes widening as they all broke out into a laughing fit “ fucking nishinoyas so stupid “
“ this asshole just wasted a dare on an obvious answer “
hinata rubbing the said males back as his head finally dropped to the table cheek hitting the brown table as he laughed “ ha yeah sure ‘m stupid —real stupid “
he smiled drunkenly laughing at the tables comments “ haha its obviously not that obvious “
Your heart dropped smile only following as you looked from nishinoyas eyes to the scene playing in front of you. Your boyfriends lips locked on another pair that weren’t your own. His hands coming up to the back of her head to push her closer to him as he hungrily pressed his lips onto hers
Her eyes wide as his were closed almost like he was enjoying this “ what “ you whispered out as a rough hand came in contact with tanakas shoulder grabbing it and pulling him back
“ what the fuck you asshole “ tsukishimas voice was threatening as he stared down on the male genuinely confused “ what the hell do you think your doing “
“ hey blondy is that anyway to speak to someone older than you“ he scoffed “ mind your manners child “
“ mind— mind your manners? “ your voice was short and quiet as your eyes darted around the room eyes blinking back the surprise they held as everyone turned to face you only making this deepening pit in your stomach grow.
“ why— tanaka— san why would you do that “
“ what — whatd I do this time suga huh — first it was having a crush on kiyoko everyone was screaming how I wouldn’t get her ha “ he scoffed “ fucking assholes were right so here I am with a fucking backup “
He shook his head as he leaned it back to stare up at the ceiling “ shitty arts and crafts project of building her because I couldn’t have the original — fucking sad “
your heart broke “ sitting here pretending kissing y/n is the same as kissing kiyoko — hell I didn’t even wanna kiss y/n right now i wanted to kiss kiy— “
“ shitty asshole you just did “ tsukishimas voice raised his eyes holding the anger you couldn’t even hold for yourself “ you just did right in front of your s/o “
“ well with them looking the same how the fuck was I suppose to tell “ he laughed “ that’s what you said earlier right ? so what’s so wrong with me enforcing it ? “ he scoffed “ everyone already believed it right so why the fuck does it matter they look the same, act the same , talk the fucking same so in the end I kissed y/n right— ha “
your body hurt just like your heart and your brain was spinning “ why would you — why would you date me tanaka if you didn’t want me “
“ did it look like I was gonna get kiyoko anytime soon — your a ditz — the whole time i’m doing this to get over her and you just became her “
you sat silently blinking back the tears that you held throat holding a sob that wanted to make its way out “ get the fuck out “
“ excuse m—”
“ GET THE FUCK OUT “ you screamed your tears disappearing and turning into anger “ get out get out get out “ you screamed hands reaching out to punch him over the table as you repeated the phrase
“ ok— ok stop stop “
“ no no no get the fuck out I paid for this I paid I paid “ you screaming like a child throwing a tantrum in a supermarket him only moving to stand and walk to the bedroom drunkenly to grab his clothes “ just let me grab my stuff i’ll be out of your hair for the night “
you raged as he made his way into your once shared bedroom forgetting the living room full of people as you ran after him to rip the clothes out of his hand that he held. All the items you’d bought with your hard earned money. The shoes you’d spent over 50$ on for his birthday in his hand along with the limited edition shirt you’d bought for him after he begged for it screaming that was his favorite player.
The items that you’d stayed up four hours for the night of just to buy it for him with your paycheck that week. Your thoughts only making you more upset when you thought back to everything you’d done for the male and the stuff he’d done for y—
he’d done absolutely nothing for you in this whole relationship and this only pissed you off more at the thought
Your heart broke again when you noticed you were already screaming at him again “ get the hell out “
“ i’m going fuck y/n “
“ go faster asshole “
“ what so no clothes ? “ he laughed “ come on that’s pretty harsh —baby it’s cold out give me a jacket or something at least until morning when I come back home “
“ morning “ you scoffed “ you’ll need a jacket for awhile tanaka because your not coming back in my house so freeze your ass off out there or go with your high school crush and her husband “
His once smiling face turning into an angry one as he stepped closer to you the alcohol spilling from his breath and onto your face as he stared down at you “ the fuck are you bringing that up for “
“ your the one who went around kissing a married woman “ you were gonna rub this all in his face. You couldn’t wait until kiyokos husband beat up the drunken deadbeat in front of you.
“I thought it was you “
“ yeah sure after you gave me a makeover to look like her i’m sure you did tanaka “
“ so fucking ungrateful “
“ oh now i’m ungrateful “
“ yeah you are “ his voice got louder as he pointed between you and him “ I made you into the woman I love — the perfect woman you should be on your knees thanking me right now “
“ aw should I “ you sighed “ god what’s wrong with me “
“ exactly now give me my stuff back i’m going to bed this is fucking with my head ’m drunk and I wanna bask in it for a minute — maybe forget you just tried to kick me out so I don’t get on your ass in the morning “
“ yeah of course babe you need your rest “ you nodded as he walked towards your door to pick up where you’d thrown his clothes only for you run and jump on his back arms wrapping around his neck your legs wrapping around his torso “ i’m gonna kill you— you asshole “
“ what the fuck “
“ then i’m gonna lock your body in my fucking freezer or even have daichi fake an arrest you prick— you’ve made my life a living hell — and now you wanna sleep— in my house “
You weren’t sure how he ended up leaving all you knew is that your heart seriously broke when you finally locked the door and rested your forehead against it. Tears spilling from your eyes for the first time that night. You’d gone crazy you had to have because just a few hours ago you almost choked the male to death after jumping on his back like a pro wrestler you were really going crazy
Your body relaxed as you felt a warmth make it’s way over to you only for it to tense when a familiar hand caressed your back and tried to lift your upper body up and away from the floor you’d fell onto sometime that night “ come on y/n —at least let me help you to the couch “ a sigh made it’s way through the house “ I promise you can wallow in your shitty tear soaked shirt after I make sure your comfortable and not hurting “
a cough quickly followed “ physically that is — this shits gotta hurt emotionally “
Your words coming out in a slurred whine like a child “ but it’s dirty — it needs to be cleaned “
“ would I tell you to go sit down if it wasn’t “ he spit back as he finally got you to fall into his chest after leading you over to the couch turning off the hallway light and leaving the lamp next to the couch on.
Him sighing out and shifting uncomfortably as you cried into his shirt causing him to need to distract himself from the crying woman in his arms. How the hell did he end up the nice one in this situation
Why did he push everyone out the house? He could’ve left hell he could’ve copied nishinoya and stolen the leftover four liquor bottles you had laid out on the table before everything happened
he wasn’t a comforting person so why would he shoo everyone else that could’ve helped you away?
he scoffed as he tried to fiddle with his sleeves only to take off his glasses and clean them over and over again
“ how many times are you gonna clean them “ you sniffled into his chest
“ until you finish acting like a baby — I feel like I have a kid ? Like i’m a parent I mean what do parents do” his hand softly came down on your head to pet your hair softly unsure why to do in this situation “ I uh— do you want warm milk ? chocolate or strawberry or is it my baby’s bedtime ? “
“ shut up tsuki “ he laughed as he felt you snuggle up closer to him “ so why are you — of all people —the only one that stayed everyone else must think i’m crazy or something “
“ eh I mean they already thought you were we were making bets before we walked in here on what you’d changed this time to look like kiyoko “
you slapping his arm softly before laughing “ god do I really look like her “
His once stoic face grew sad as his eyes ran over your facial features his eyebrows furrowing as he looked down on you “ yeah — yeah you really do — that crazy asshole “ he shook his head hand reaching out to touch your hair again feeling how burned it was from constantly flat ironing it and curling it like tanaka wanted “ god what did he do to you “
“ build a y/n “ you laughed as he stood up his own words following quickly after yours “ come on “
“ what “ you said as you stared at his open outstretched hand “ what’s going on “
“ let’s go “ you shook your head no “ look do you wanna change back or no “
You swallowed the lump in your throat before nodding slowly and taking his hand to travel with him to the bathroom. Him speaking to you softly only loud enough for you to try and figure out some of the words you couldn’t.
“ for some reason I miss old y/n — and I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing em’ again preferably across the table from me in a booth at 2:30 saturday with strawberry cake in front us? “

hi ok sooooo i have asked numerous writers for this request because i thrive on angst and fluff 👁👄👁 so here goes: a love triangle between draco, harry, and a ravenclaw reader. the reader’s been known to be head over heels in love with draco and giving him origami hearts everyday for a year or two, which he only throws in his trash bin. he usually just ignores her and finds her gestures annoying and laughable. one day, he goes too far with his rebuttals. the reader, heartbroken and realizing she had no chance at all, stopped pursuing him altogether. for the next few weeks, he found himself weirded out that he hadn’t received any origami hearts. while emptying his trashbin, he discovers that when you unfold the hearts, there were little notes of encouragement and sweet letters. just as he was about to confront her, he notices the reader folding something on her table during class and thinking it was finally another origami heart for him. however, it was a butterfly, and she handed it to harry instead. Jajdjeioa PLS MAKE IT ANGSTY AND FLUFFY IT’S UP TO U ON HOW IT WILL END BUT WOULD BE CUTE IF HARRY MADE THE PAPER BUTTERFLY FLAP ITS WINGS THO
Ok sorry for the cliche and long request, take your time and stay safe. I enjoy your writing sm 🥺
Butterflies and Paper Hearts || D.M, H.P
Requested: Yes Pairing: Draco Malfoy x fem!reader , a bit of Harry Potter x reader but not really Warnings: ANGST, swearing, Summary: Draco doesn’t like you and tries to let you down multiple times, when it finally does work he feels regret wash over him.
WORDS : 3864
First of all, I’m so sorry for taking so long to get to this. I read the request when it first came in and I loved it but I’ve been struggling to conceptualize it, and then I fell into a bit of a sad spiral because of all the other stuff that’s been going on in my life, which is why I took me so long to complete it. Second of all, I had to amend the idea a bit to make it work for me, e.g I wrote this in an AU where Voldemort doesn’t exist because I hate mr. no-nose, and I didn’t make the hearts go on for years. Third of all, thank you so much for this request! It’s a lovely concept and I really enjoyed writing it <3

Butterflies.
Flying. Soaring. Alive.
The first time that Draco had ever noticed you was in your fourth year. You were sat at the Ravenclaw table and immersed in a discussion with Padma Patil, one that had you laughing so hard that you were throwing your head back and wiping tears from your eyes. The sight had knocked the wind out of his lungs, like someone had just punched him in the stomach, and he felt the weirdest sensation in his gut.
It was butterflies erupting.
~~~
The first time that you noticed Draco was in your fifth year. Ravenclaws and Slytherins were in Charms together, as usual, and you’d accidentally sat next to him instead of Padma.
“Dude, you’ll never guess what happened this morn-“ You stop speaking the second you notice that the person beside you is, in fact, not your best friend but rather a scowling Slytherin. “You’re not Padma.” You frown.
“No shit.” He rolls his eyes, “What gave it away? The green robes or the blond hair?”
“The snarky attitude.” You instantly reply and he looks taken aback for a second, “Who are you anyway?”
If you’d thought he looked shocked before, you were wrong. “Excuse me?”
“Who are you? What was so confusing about that sentence?” You raise your eyebrows, “Clearly not a Ravenclaw.”
He scoffs at your remark but answers anyway, “I’m Draco? Draco Malfoy?” He asks, a pretentious tone lacing his voice. “We’ve shared this lesson together since you got here last year?”
“Stalker much?” You ask with a smile and he rolls his eyes. “Anyway, nice to meet you Draco, I’m Y/N.”
“I know.” He replies simply as he takes the hand that you’d outstretched. “Some of us pay attention.”
“Mhmm.”
“So what happened this morning?”
“What?” You furrow your eyebrows in confusion.
“You were about to tell me about what happened this morning.”
“Oh.” You respond in embarrassment and watch as his smirk grows.
“What? Am I not worthy of your great story?”
“It’s not that, I just don’t think it’ll interest you.”
“Try me.”
“Right, what’s all this then?” Padma asks as she stops in front of the desk with a confused expression.
You giggle at her obvious confusion, “I accidentally sat here instead of by our normal spot. Do you know this miserable boy?”
“Better than I’d like to admit.” She responds sourly before turning a harsh gaze toward Draco, “Daddy’s boy.”
“Wench.” He responds and she rolls her eyes.
“Are you coming to sit with me?” Padma asks as she turns back to you and you shake your head.
“Maybe tomorrow, I’d like to sit here and annoy him today.”
“I cannot possibly stand in the way of that, you’re doing the whole grade a great service.” Padma replies with a laugh as she goes to sit a few desks away from you.
~~~
Day 1 - 1 Heart
Hearts.
Fragile things.
It’s the next Monday when you have Charms again, and you decide to sit by Draco’s desk in hopes of him coming to sit beside you.
“What on earth are you doing?” Draco asks as he peers over your shoulder before sitting in the chair beside you.
“Origami.” You respond with a smile and he raises an eyebrow toward you. “That thing where you fold pieces of paper into shapes?” You ask and he nods in understanding.
He takes his seat with a sigh, “Sounds boring.”
“Everything sounds boring to you.” You roll your eyes before finishing up the origami heart.
“True.”
You give it a once over and smile in satisfaction before turning to Draco and handing it out him. “Here.”
Hearts. Absurdly fragile things, Draco thinks as he feels his own heart begin to race. Here you are, nonchalantly handing him a piece of paper, and he feels like his entire world is collapsing in on itself at the gesture. Y/N, giving me a heart.
He rolls his eyes and takes the object from you with a scowl, “Why are you giving this to me?”
You shrug, “You’re not completely intolerable, you’ve earned it.”
He smirks, “Careful, people might start to think that you like me.”
You smile, “Maybe I do.”
Your smile reminds him of butterflies- bright, fluttering, inviting, warm, beautiful.
He rolls his eyes and makes a big show of tossing the origami heart into a nearby bin, and you fight to hide the hurt hidden behind your eyes. But what you don’t know is that at the end of the Charms lesson, once everyone else has left, Draco goes into that very same bin and pulls out the heart.
Day 20 - 20 Hearts
“Are you still doing this?” He asks in annoyance as you hand him another origami heart, the same way you have, every morning, for the last twenty days.
“Yup. I’ve got no reason to stop.” You shrug with a small smile.
“How about the fact that I think they’re stupid and I don’t like them?”
“You’re under the misconception that I care about your feelings.”
He chuckles and brings his face down to yours till you’re inches apart. “I think you care a lot more about my feelings than you’d like to admit.”
You swallow and look away from him, trying to avoid the warm feeling that’s creeping up your neck and settling into your skin. “You wish blondie.”
“Mhmm.” He replies absent-mindedly as he turns into the classroom, drops the heart into the nearest bin, and sits in his seat.
You try to look unbothered as you go to sit beside him, ignoring the disappointment that’s churning your insides.
Day 35 - 35 Hearts
You watch as Draco inspects the origami heart from the Slytherin table, hoping that he might open it this time.
“He’s going to break your heart, Y/N.” Padma whispers from her seat beside you in the Great Hall.
You shake your head and let your eyes drift away from the blond at the Slytherin table. “He wouldn’t do that, he’s a lot better than you think he is.”
“Y/N, I’ve known him a lot longer than you have and I know that this isn’t going to end well.”
“And why not?” You ask defensively.
Because you’re a muggle-born, Padma wants to say, but she knows that it isn’t her place to crush your dreams so harshly. She shakes her head instead and smiles sympathetically, “Nevermind, I’m sorry for overstepping.”
You don’t notice, too busy talking to Padma, that Draco tucks the little piece of paper into his robe with a small smile.
Day 50 - 50 Hearts
You don’t exactly know when you caught feelings for Draco, it’s like all the small moments just bunched up together, but you know that it wasn’t your intention. The hearts, the sitting together in charms, it had all just started as friendly gestures in an attempt to get the scowling boy to befriend you, but somewhere along the line things just got too messy.
And now, you’re utterly infatuated with him.
You take a deep breath as you pull out the small box from your bag containing Draco’s Christmas present. The train comes to a half at platform 9 and 3/4, and you quickly grab your belongings before rushing out of the train in order to catch the blond before he goes home for the holidays.
You catch him by the door and you smile at him. “I’ve got something for you.”
“Another paper heart?” He raises his eyebrows with a smirk and you shake your head.
“No, it’s something else actually.” You hand the box to him, wrapped in a mix of dark green and navy blue paper, and he accepts it with a skeptical glance.
“What is it?”
“A Christmas present.” You laugh and he nods sheepishly in acknowledgement.
“Oh.” He rubs the back of his neck, “I didn’t get you anything…”
“I didn’t want anything.” You smile again, “That’s not why I got you a gift.”
You watch as he nods again and looks out the window. “Then why did you get me the gift?”
“Cause we’re friends.” You shrug and he swallows.
If he were any other person then the erupting butterflies in his stomach would be an obvious sign to pull you closer and hug you till both your arms hurt. If you weren’t a muggle-born witch, and his parents weren’t watching him intently from outside the train, then this would be the moment that he seized to let your friendship blossom into more.
“We’re not friends.” He spits out coldly, and you’re taken aback by the sudden harsh tone.
“Okay…” You reply quietly, “Acquaintances?”
“For fuck sake…” He mumbles with a sigh, “Y/N, I don’t like you, at all. You’re annoying, you’re pushy, and worst of all, you’re a mudblood.”
Harsh words, words that taste of venomous denial, are running out of his mouth before he can stop them. The look of astonishment and sadness on your face has regret dancing on his tastebuds like the taste of tar, and he struggles to push that feeling down.
“You don’t mean that…”
“I meant every word, and I can repeat it if that empty skull of yours didn’t catch it.”
You shake your head and look down at the ground, trying to blink away tears, and he nods as he turns to finally leave the train.
“Draco.” You choke out and he whips his head back angrily.
“What?”
“I forgot to give you this today.” You whisper as you hand him his origami heart and push your way past him toward the platform.
You feel sick, you feel sad, you feel disappointed. There’s a twisting and churning that’s going on in your stomach but it’s not like normal, it’s the opposite of what you’ve felt every time before.
It’s butterflies dying.
He watches you walk away as a lump forms in his throat.
Day 65 - 0 Hearts
Draco walks into charms half-expecting you to be sitting somewhere else, and half-hoping that you’re sitting in your usual seat beside him. He didn’t open the Christmas present, too much guilt weighing him down, and he hopes that you don’t give him any more paper hearts.
He feels an odd combination of anguish and comfort when he sees that you haven’t moved, and goes to sit beside you in silence. You turn to him and smile but say nothing to him, not then and not for the rest of the lesson. When you get up to leave he half-expects you to drop an origami heart on his books, and disappointment consumes when you don’t.
Day 75 - 0 Hearts
“Morning.” He mumbles as he finds a spot beside you, as usual.
“Morning.” You respond.
That’s all the conversation that you two have now. A part of you misses the way the two of you had been before, easy-going, sarcastic, in-sync, but an even bigger part of you understands why that had to be over. He could never allow himself to love someone like you without resentful undertones of disgust and shame, and you could never settle for someone who doesn’t love you regardless of your blood purity.
“Y/N…” Someone whines from ahead and you look up from your desk to find Harry stood in front of you.
You laugh at his childish behaviour, “Yes Harry?”
“Please help me with this assignment?”
“No.” You respond bluntly, just to mess with him, and he pouts at you.
“Please?” You shake your head, “Please?” You shake your head again and he pouts at you hopelessly, “Pleaseeee?” He begs once more and drags out his plea.
You laugh once again and nod, “Okay fine.”
“Thank you so much!” He exclaims excitedly and leans over the desk to hug you. You shake your head and giggle in his arms, and Draco has to look away to ignore the looming feeling of jealousy consuming him.
Day 103 - 1 Heart
“So, I know that we’re not friends or anything…” You start as you turn to Draco, “But Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and I can’t resist the urge to give you one more.”
He furrows his eyebrows in confusion but feels realisation wash over him as you hand him an origami heart, one that’s bigger than all the rest you’ve given him in the past. He nods and takes it from you, trying to pretend as though his heart isn’t swelling at the gesture. “Thank you.” He responds curtly before the two of you revert back to silence.
It’s only when he’s alone in his dorm room that night that he actually looks at the origami heart. It’s red, and you’ve written his name across it in cursive. He runs his fingers along it and allows himself to unfurl it, feeling shocked to find words written inside it.
I know you never read these, so I’m probably wasting my time, but I wanted to say that I miss you.
Ridiculous right? I even feel stupid writing it. But it’s the truth, I do. I miss your smile, and your laugh. I miss the way you would scribble nonsense in my book to distract me from the lesson, and I miss the way you’d get so frustrated when I did the same. I miss the way you’d make fun of me for being a nerd, and try not to look proud when you outdid me in tests.
I miss your jokes too, even though they weren’t really funny, and the way you’d always forget your textbook so we were forced to share and we had an excuse to talk. I miss you a bunch, even though I know that you don’t miss me nearly as much.
Happy Valentine’s Day pretty boy,
I wish you could’ve loved me the way that I love you.
He quickly jumps off his bed and walks toward his trunk. He pulls out the Christmas gift that he never opened and another small box that he’d used to store all of your origami hearts, and begins to go through them all.
Note 1 - You’re weird but I like you. Very defensive, I hope that I can knock down those barriers. Note 2 - Your hair looked really nice today, made you look like a famous movie star who pays people to do it for him. Do you secretly have a hairdresser in your room? Note 3 - Your eyes are a strange colour, a cross between blue and grey, it reminds me of the sky before a really pretty rainstorm.
He opens every heart, from the first to the last, processing every last compliment that you’d ever written. With every word he reads, he feels a mixture of love and guilt wash over him simultaneously. Love for you- because you’re kind, and funny, and beautiful, and way too good for him- and guilt- for treating you so horribly because he was scared, when all he had wanted to do was kiss you, and hold your hand.
9 - I’m oddly very proud of you for beating me in the latest Charms assignment, you might actually be the bigger nerd between us both. 20 - I know you hate that I call you pretty boy but that’s what you are, you’re unnecessarily pretty! 26 - You’re very funny when you’re not trying to be. Your jokes are horrendous, but your impersonations and quips can be quite amusing. 35 - I’m starting to think that you don’t read these. No, I’m sure that you’re not reading these. Doesn’t matter though, there’s so many things that I love about you and I think I’ll explode if I don’t put them down somewhere. 47 - I’ve fallen very hard for you, it might be your dumb laugh or the way you tickle me whenever you walk into class, but I didn’t know that you could feel this much for a person. Damn you pretty boy. 50 - Padma thinks you’re no good for me, I agree, but I don’t care. I love you too much to give you up.
The last of the collection is the Christmas gift that you gave him. He’d refrained from opening it out of shame, feeling unworthy of a gift from you after being so cold to you that day on the train. He unwraps it and finds another paper heart, with a silver engraved ring above it. The words, ‘pretty boy’  are inscribed into the ring and he smiles at the sight, a few tears sliding down his face.
Pretty boys like you deserve a little more than paper hearts, I hope you like it.
He slips the ring on before getting off his bed, walking to his desk, and pulling out a piece of paper.
Day 104 - 1 Heart.
It’s Valentine’s Day and his palms are sweaty, for the first time in his life Draco has sweaty palms because of a girl.
You’re in your usual seat and you’re folding another piece of paper. His heart soars at the sight of you so focused, that goofy smile you always have whenever something demands a lot of your attention, and your hands working delicately against the edges of the paper. He stops in front of you.
He clears his throat and you look up at him, startled by the sudden interruption. “Oh, Draco, morning.” You respond with a small smile, obviously still apprehensive about him.
“Happy Valentine’s Day Y/N.” He smiles back and slides an origami heart onto the desk, beside the butterfly that you seem to have been folding.
“What’s this?” You ask in confusion as you pick it up and inspect it.
“You’ve made enough to be able to tell by now.” He deadpans and you laugh softly with a nod.
“It’s a paper heart.” You smile up at him, “Did you make this for me?”
“Maybe.” He responds curtly as he slides into his chair beside you, but you catch the shy smile he’s harboring.
“Thank you.” He nods, “I could’ve done better though.”
He scoffs, “That’s not a fair comparison.”
“And why not?” You raise your eyebrows and he chuckles as he rolls his eyes.
“Read the note inside and you’ll know why.”
“There’s a note inside?” You exclaim excitedly as you start to unfold the heart and he yanks it out of your hands.
“No! Read it later when I’m, like, far away from you.” He says defensively and you furrow your eyebrows but nod in agreement.
“Alright, I’ll read it after school.” You take it back from him and put it in your robe. You resume folding the butterfly and smile when you see that it’s done.
Draco watches intently as you finish it, expecting you to hand it to him once it’s finished, and furrows his eyebrows in confusion when you set it down and scan the classroom.
“Harry!” You exclaim as you watch him walk from the door and toward you with a bright smile.
“Y/N.” He responds once he’s standing in front of you. “Is this for me?” He asks once he sees the butterfly on your desk, and Draco is about to scoff at the question but you nod your head eagerly.
“Of course!” You pick it up and give it to Harry, watching excitedly as he opens it up and reads the note inside.
Draco watches in silent envy as Harry laughs, at whatever you’ve written in the note, and brings his lips down to your forehead. “Thank you so much butterfly, I love it.”
You smile proudly and your eyes light up as you watch Harry cast a charm to make the butterfly flap it’s wings and fly down to his desk. “When are you going to teach me that? I’ve been asking for weeks now!”
“If I taught you then I wouldn’t have anything to impress you with.” He smirks as he leaves to his desk and you shake your head with a laugh.
“You two seem to be quite friendly now…” Draco mumbles, trying to hide the jealousy in his voice. The butterflies that had been erupting in his stomach earlier that morning being trampled to death by Harry.
“Yeah, we’ve been-“ You cut yourself off with a gasp as you catch a glimpse of the ring that you bought Draco, “You’re wearing it!”
He smiles at your excitement, thinking about how such simple expressions from you leave butterflies fluttering in his stomach. “Yes.” He chuckles and you smile.
“I thought you didn’t like it.” You respond softly and he feels his heart break.
“No, not at all. I just didn’t want other people getting jealous.”
He smiles at you and you feel that familiar bubbling in your stomach, like rosh bushes blooming at the sight of the sun, but you can’t exactly pinpoint the feeling.
Later that day when you’re sat beneath a tree and reading Draco’s letter, you know exactly what that feeling is.
~~~
Y/N.
Beautiful, funny, kind, observant, utterly perfect Y/N.
I’ve spent the last three hours trying to come up with a reason for you to forgive me, I couldn’t come up with one. I also tried to find an excuse, any really, that could justify my horrid actions over the last few weeks, and I couldn’t find one. So instead, I settled on just telling you the truth.
I’m a coward.
You’re probably laughing right now and thinking, “He’s only realising this now?”, and the answer is yes. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but you’re the brighter one between us two. It took me 103 more days than you, to realise what you knew the first day you made me a paper heart; the two of us are meant to be.
That sounds a bit cheesy doesn’t it? Doesn’t matter anyway, because in note 12 you said that you enjoy my cheesy anecdotes. I’m not sure why though, I’m not particularly sure why you love anything about me when you’re you, but I guess some mysteries can never be solved.
I’m sorry for those words I said that day on the train, I didn’t mean them. I was scared of what my parents would think if I fell for a muggle-born witch, but I forgot one important thing; it doesn’t matter. All that matters is the fact that I’ve never been as happy as when I’m with you. If I could spend the rest of my life getting these perfect little paper hearts from you, listening to your sweet laugh, bothering you when you’re trying to get work done and buying you rings that match the ones on my hands, then I’d be over the moon.
I’m sorry for taking so long to tell you this; I love you Y/N. I know that I haven’t earned a second chance but if by some miracle you decide to grant me one then I promise to make it worth your while.
I would pick the stars out of the sky for you Y/N, if only you asked me to.
Happy Valentine’s Day from your pretty boy.
You look up from the letter and wipe the tears that had managed to escape, before getting off the grass and running back into the castle. When you find Draco eating dinner in the Great Hall, and see him flash you a shy smile, you instantly know what that feeling from earlier was.
It was butterflies reviving.
I’m pretty sure I completely deviated from what you wanted, I’m so sorry if it’s not satisfactory :( It’s so cheesy and I feel like I messed it up at a few points but either way I liked writing it, it made me very happy to finally write some Draco fluff again.
anyway, love you all,
The Magic Reveal fic we deserve, in which Merlin gets as angry as he deserves to get:
Part 2   Part 3   Part 4   Part 5
Don’t get me wrong I LOVE a magic reveal with a Merlin who feels bad about lying. I love a reveal with Arthur being furious and Merlin crying but then they talk it out and all is well. I think it's pretty in-character for Merlin to want to see Arthur come to his own conclusions about magic, without being influenced by Merlin’s opinions
BUT I also kinda wanna see Merlin get angry? Like, why should he feel bad about hiding himself in a kingdom where "himself" gets him nothing but a pyre?? Yeah, he and Arthur are close, but unless you've lived with a secret like that (one that will get you shunned, hated, or even killed) then, and I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH, it doesn't matter How Close you are with someone, how certain you are that they would never hurt you, or care either way, it will almost ALWAYS be scary to tell them. So like. Let Merlin get angry:
I'd say Arthur has been king for maybe a year at this point. He's still a new monarch, still a lot on his plate, BUT also still plenty of time for him to have repealed the ban on magic, or at least started working on it.
But he hasn't.
Granted he hasn't executed anyone in a while (banishments and prison time are the norm, executions are only used nowadays for high treason). BUT the law still remains, it's still technically punishable by death, to be a sorcerer.
Arthur and Merlin have little hunting trips, when Arthur is getting too stressed and losing too much sleep, when he trains the knights too hard and snaps at even Gaius, Merlin (or sometimes even Leon, if they're both being grumpy arseholes) insists that they leave the city for a day or more, to go hunting.
The council have been told it's so the King can keep up with his fitness, can keep familiar with his lands, and keep his skills sharp (he only has enough time to train with the knights a couple times a week nowadays, a far cry from the several hours he used to do every morning without fail), and that keeps them satisfied.
The Gang (the Knights, Gwen, Gaius, and Morgana (she's good in this because that's what I want let me have this)) know the truth, that sometimes the two of them just need a few days to goof off and be themselves, to finally get some time to relax. They'll grab a couple hares and maybe a stag on the way back if they can, so they can at least pretend that's what they've been doing the whole time.
These trips can last anywhere between a day, to two weeks, and Arthur leaves the same set of instructions with the council and the knights every time:
"The safety of Camelot’s people is your highest priority. I leave Sir Leon in charge of everything to do with the knights, patrol, and should any form of conflict arise. If there is an emergency, you are to consult the Inner Council (I don’t know if that's a thing but let's say it is; its The Gang), and send a squire on horseback to fetch me immediately. There's one boy in the troupe who always manages to track me the down the quickest, so make sure he's the one sent, Sir Leon knows who I speak of."
(He's improved over the years, but Arthur is still very... cagey, when it comes to compliments, and his trust. Leon will never mention it, but the fact that Arthur leaves the safety of the kingdom to him, without hesitation or worry, makes him feel greatly honoured. That is the highest form of trust Arthur is capable of giving.)
~
ANYWAY I feel like most of this has just been backstory so let's get into it:
Normally it's Merlin or Leon who demand that the trip needs to happen.
This time
It's Arthur.
Arthur has tried to ignore it (he's trying to get better but he's not great with emotions and stuff, the big dummy) but Merlin has been in a sour mood for weeks now. He's been quiet and withdrawn, snappy, and has been avoiding Arthur whenever possible.
At first it was easy to ignore, when it started a few months ago it was barely noticeable to anyone who didn't know the two of them Very Well, but in the last few weeks it's become a problem.
Arthur reckons a trip might do them some good. Merlin can relax, and will either get over whatever is bothering him, or be comfortable enough to talk to Arthur about it.
So they head out. Merlin doesn't seem too happy about the trip but he doesn’t complain.
(Odd in itself, if Merlin is unhappy about something he usually makes it known.)
The first couple of days are... odd, to say the least. It seems that every time Arthur notices Merlin relax, he quickly tightens up again. One short, joking conversation is followed by a few more hours of painful, awkward silence.
Arthur comes to the daunting realisation, that if he wants to help is friend (and the love of his life but like... baby blondie has hardly reached that conclusion himself, he might need a bit more time on that) is to confront it head on.
So they're settling down in the evening. The fire is roaring, the horses have been fed and watered, dinner has been eaten, and the two of them are sat at opposite ends of the fire (Very Odd, they're usually glued at the hip, especially when it's just the two of them).
Arthur looks at his friend properly for the first times in a while and he Does Not Like what he sees.
Merlin is visibly exhausted, big bags under his eyes, and his skin paler than normal, scowling ever so slightly into the fire. Shoulders tense, and hands gripping each other until the skin on his knuckles is white. And despite all that, Arthur thinks that Merlin looks more sad, than angry.
Maybe Merlin notices Arthur's staring, they hold eye contact for a little while before Merlin becomes sort of... resigned?? To the fact that he's gonna have to have this conversation whether he wants it or not? He goes to say something but before he can, Arthur interrupts him:
"So Merlin. How do you think I'm doing so far?"
(Which is a stupid thing to say, really. But Arthur is, as we've already established, extremely emotionally constipated, and he figures that finding out what's wrong with Merlin indirectly, and then subtly fixing it behind his back, is a far better idea than asking him to his face.)
Merlin clenches his jaw and looks away it this, his reply and his body language clearly sending different messages:
"You know what I think. You're going to be a great king."
Arthur thinks : "(Going to be? I've been king for a year, there's been no war and far fewer attempts on my life than when I was a prince. There's been a good harvest, all diplomatic meetings have gone well, and more peace treaties, and trade agreements, have been signed in the last twelve months, than in the ten years before it. I know I can still do better but... does Merlin not think I'm good?")
Arthur says : "Going to be? I think I'm a pretty great King already if I do say so myself."
"Then why ask? Besides. There are a few things you haven't done."
Merlin's tone is biting, even though he tries to force it out casually. Arthur notices. ”There are a few things you haven't done”... that means something specific.
"Hmm. I suppose. What things did you have in mind then, Merlin?"
Arthur also tries to sound casual, but the question comes out very pointed
Merlin desperately doesn't want to say it out loud, in fear of revealing too much of himself, so he goes with the vague answer of:
"Promises were made. I guess I just figured you weren't the type to break them, that's all. I'm sure you'll get there in time."
Merlin sounds sort of hopeful there. But the sort of hope that he's been living with for years, the sort of hope that has a layer of sadness and resignation laying over the the top like a tablecloth.
Arthur notices:
"Promises?" He doesn’t want to talk too much or too loudly, in fear that Merlin realises that he's speaking openly and clams up again.
Arthur has realised, over the last year or two, that despite their closeness, despite the endless conversations they seem to have, he doesn't really know all that much about Merlin. He knows he doesn’t spend as much time picking herbs, or in the tavern, as he and Gaius would claim. He doesn't know his favourite colour, or season, or holiday. He doesn't know when abouts his birthday is, or what he likes eating. He doesn't know much about his childhood, he's never mentioned his father.
(Despite all this, he's still in love with the idiot, but again, a revelation for another time.)
Merlin responds "To the druids. You promised they would be welcomed, that magic would return. I know your opinions on magic-"
(The manservant visibly shuffles at this, uncomfortable.)
"-but I figured a promise is a promise. Keeping your word had always seemed so important to you. Before."
Arthur notices the past tense. Like Merlin doesn’t believe that Arthur holds importance to his word anymore:
"I'm not my father Merlin. There have been no executions just for the sake of it since I took the crown."
Merlin’s reply comes quickly, in a harsh tone:
"Yes I know that. But your fathers law still remains. It's technically still punishable by execution just to exist as a sorcerer in your kingdom."
(Arthur notices the thinly veiled disgust in Merlin's voice when he mentions Uther. Arthur knew that Merlin disliked the previous king, but he didn’t think he hated him that much.)
Merlin is getting more and more visibly frustrated at this point. Both at Arthur, and the topic of conversation, but also at himself, for letting himself become so worked up over something he'd sworn to keep Arthur away from.
"You really didn't like my Father did you Merlin?" He says it with a chuckle, trying to keep the conversation light and casual.
(This is NOT a conversation that should be light and casual, his friend is in pain, and revealing more of himself than he ever had before, this should be serious. But Arthur isn't quite sure how to do that, so inappropriately light and casual is what he goes for.)
Merlin responds with a quiet, but forceful:
"I hated him. I still do. He's your father, I know that you're not him, and I know you can't help your heritage. But I'll never forgive Uther for what he did. And I'm not angry that he's...gone."
Arthur's very much taken aback at that. He knows everyone has... strong opinions on Uther, but they've never voiced it in front of him.
"Why?? I mean I know he put you in the stocks a couple of times, but so have I to be fair. Why do you hate him so much?"
(This is the point Merlin gets angry. Or angrier. This is when he stops trying to hide it, stops trying to hold it in. Arthur hadn't gotten angry at Merlin for talking about Uther in such a way, he was just curious. Merlin had been planning on telling him the truth at some point anyway, so he might as well do it now, with no one else around, and Arthur in a goodish mood.)
Merlin jumps up, clenching his fists and staring Arthur in the eye for the first time since the start of the conversation, breathing deeply.
Arthur is taken even further aback at Merlin's sudden unwillingness to hide his true reaction to the topic at hand, but he doesn't say anything, and just waits for Merlin’s response
"Why?? Why do I hate him? Maybe because he was blinded fear and selfish hatred."
Merlin stops and looks away, but doesn't sit down, still tense.
I imagine he's waiting for Arthur to say something, but he doesn’t, opting to wait for Merlin to carry on himself, unwilling to remind Merlin exactly who he was talking to, and about what.
After a few moments of silence, Merlin continues, getting angrier with each word as he paces:
"Your father, the Great King Uther, murdered thousands of people. He committed genocide, because he insisted on blaming other people for his own mistakes. He didn't pay attention to the fine print, and killed his own wife and in return, he executes THOUSANDS of MY people. Just for daring to exist. He was so full of hatred, but he, of course, was infallible so it MUST have been someone else's fault. He was incapable of admitting his own mistakes and the injustice that went unpunished is indescribable, he was a tyrant, and a murderer, and I'll never forgive him."
(Arthur knows the truth about what happened to his Ma in this story, I don’t know how, he just does. And it's a topic of conversation he avoids like the plague.)
At the end of his little outburst, Merlin stills. He is shaking as he glares at the floor, and is more furious than Arthur has ever seen him before.
The King notices the little slip up.
"Your people?" He says, so quietly it's a wonder Merlin hears it.
Merlin freezes at this, at the realisation that there's no real way he can play this off. He was planning on telling him at some point anyway. They're miles away from the city in the middle of a large, barely tamed forest. If he needs to run for his life, he could get away easily enough.
"Yes Arthur. My people. You really should've let me speak first."
Arthur is reminded of the fact that Merlin had opened his mouth to say something, before he'd interrupted him at the beginning of the conversation. It felt like it was hours ago now, but it was really only a few minutes.
The King isn’t nearly as shocked as he thinks he should be. He knew there was something odd and secretive about Merlin, and he'd considered that he might have magic in the early days, but that hadn't been a genuine consideration for years.
He wants to be angry, and selfish, and furious at Merlin for lying to him all this time. But after hearing Merlin’s little speech, does he really have any right to?
Yes, Arthur hadn't executed any sorcerers, but he also hadn't changed the law. He hadn't stood up to his father and he certainly hadn't tried to stop the executions before he was King himself. Can he really blame Merlin? For being scared? For being angry?
"You're a sorcerer." It's not a question. It's a statement. In his mind he knows the truth, but it needs to be confirmed, out loud, by Merlin himself, before they can move the conversation on.
"Yes."
And that's all he says. Arthur waits. And when he's tired of waiting, when he realises that Merlin isn't just gonna carry on talking this time, he speaks up:
"And?"
"And what, Arthur? What do you want me to say? That I'm sorry I lied? Yes, I feel bad for lying to you, but I'll never apologise for protecting myself in a kingdom that would see me burn. And I would do it again in a heartbeat"
Arthur nods. He's tense, but he notices that he isn't scared and he wonders why, after all, as far as he was aware magic had only (almost only) caused him pain and fear.
(In the back of his mind he knows why he's not scared. Merlin doesn't have an evil bone in his body, and he's met the druids, he knows that some magic users are peaceful.)
He looks up at Merlin to see him staring at him, a sort of challenging look on his face, like he was daring Arthur to prove him right. Daring him to be selfish, and angry, and just like his father.
But when Arthur looks deeper. Really Looks at Merlin. He sees the fear, Arthur has no doubt in his mind that Merlin could escape, or even fight him off, now, if he needed to. But Merlin is scared.
If that wasn't enough to break Arthur's heart, the quick glance that Merlin throws to the space a few feet from Arthur's side, is.
Arthur looks over slowly, eyebrows furrowed, to see what Merlin glanced at so fearfully. His heart shatters when he realises what it is. Arthurs sword, sat underneath his bag, just out of his reach. Merlin thinks Arthur is going to kill him. Merlin is scared. Of Arthur.
Arthur looks back at Merlin, disbelief and gut wrenching sadness on his face. He resists the urge to jump up (knowing it would just panic Merlin) as he speaks, trying to keep his tone calming, but it comes out rushed and desperate anyway:
"I'm not going to hurt you Merlin, I swear. I'm...sorry, if my actions and words have led you to believe that I would EVER see any harm come to you."
It's over the last minute, the anger and fear from Merlin, that forces Arthur to realise the legacy he's dealing with. That Uther had done so much damage, had struck so much fear into Merlin, that it didn't matter how close they were. Any subtle, deliberate ignorance of the law wasn’t enough. Any small compliments, or defence of Merlin, wasn't enough.
As long as the law remained, as long as Arthur left his fathers legacy intact, with not even a small attempt to dismantle it, Merlin would be scared of him.
Merlin relaxes only slightly at Arthur's words, gulps, and glances once more at the sword before sitting down again. He’s still tense as he stares into the fire once more.
"All these years you've been putting your life at risk, to stay at my side. You could've quit at any time. You could've stayed in the relative safety of Ealdor, but you didn't. Why? I want to know everything Merlin. You... you mean a great deal to me, and it pains me to see you in fear. And I know it's no one’s fault but my own, and I want to fix it. So the whole story, from the beginning, I want to know."
It's Merlin’s turn to be taken aback now. In his mind, everything he's said and done in the last few minutes should be making Arthur angry. The disrespect of Uther, the tone of voice he had taken, the shouting. All of that even before the admittance of his greatest secret. But still Arthur wasn't angry, he was confused, and maybe hadn't quite processed it yet, but mostly he was just sad, sad that Merlin had to be angry on his own. Sad that Merlin had to be fearful on his own.
So he does. He starts at the beginning. His mother sending him to Camelot so Gaius could train him. Saving Arthurs life that first banquet. Saving his life again a few days later. And again. And again. And again
He talks about all the small insignificant magicks he did: cheating at dice games and keeping Arthur's bath water warm and making sure the fire stays lit through the night and helping the knights sleep when they're out and about.
He talks about all the big magicks he did: killing Nimueh and being the last Dragon-Lord and Balinor being his father, and all the great battles he had won and all the times he'd saved Arthur when Arthur hadn't even realised he'd been in danger.
He talks about everything in between. About every lucky fallen branch and every lucky rockslide and every lucky solution that wouldn't have worked without Merlin... nudging it in the right direction.
He talks and talks and talks until his throat is sore. And Arthur stays silent, unwilling to interrupt, listening intently and saving any questions and queries until the end.
After an hour or so, Merlin hesitates, but Arthur can tell that there's something else. Something he's not saying. Something that in Merlin's mind, is the scariest truth of all. So he stays silent, and waits for Merlin to continue:
"The old man that you think killed your father. Dragoon, the sorcerer who kept popping up but was never in the same room as me? That was me, in disguise."
He looks nervous at this and looks up at Arthur. Before, he'd been explaining everything with a blank but resolute look on his face, still staring into the fire (that hadn't been fed in well over an hour, but was still going strong).
Arthur just looks surprised, he'd never considered that Dragoon had been anyone but himself.
"I tried Arthur. I may have hated your father but I tried to save him. But the pendant around his neck stopped it from working and healing magic has never been my strong point anyway. I really did try."
Arthur nods at this. He figured there had been no reason for the old sorcerer to kill his father, and after consulting Gaius and realising the truth about the pendant, he didn't blame him. Though he never told anyone, not even Merlin, why would he? His manservant had never even met the guy.
"I know. I'm sorry, it can’t have been easy, thinking I blamed you for his death all these months. I'm sorry Merlin."
Merlin looks surprised but quietly grateful. Over the course of the last hour of explanation he had slowly become more and more relaxed, realising that Arthur really meant it when he said he wasn't going to hurt him, and just wanted the truth.
Merlin was still scared, and a big part of him still believed he'd probably be banished at the least at the end of this conversation. But it still felt good to get it off his chest.
"But you still haven't answered my question. Why? We didn't know each all that well those first few weeks. Months even. We practically hated each other at the beginning. But you stayed anyway. Despite hating me and despite being in constant danger. Why?"
Merlin once again hesitates at this. He tried his best but even after all these years, he's not quite sure how to navigate conversations about destiny, especially his own, and especially how it's tied so intrinsically with Arthur’s.
Instead he says:
"What do you know about Emrys?" He really needs a starting reference for this part of the conversation, and at this point, the best way to get it is to ask directly.
Arthur goes to question why, but Merlin has been nothing but honest and straight forward with him, so he trusts that it’s important, and answers truthfully:
"Not much. A few Druids have mentioned him to me before. Apparently they've been seeing him in prophetic dreams for centuries, the Druids have quite a few "seers" in their ranks. He's meant to be some great sorcerer, whose destiny it is to bring Magic and peace to Albion, with some King or other at his side. I never payed much attention to it, I hardly believe in visions of the future."
Merlin nods at that:
"You've got most of it. Emrys is meant to be the most powerful Warlock to ever walk the earth, past, present, and future. When Uther started culling sorcerers, an astronomical amount of magic was poured back into the earth all at once. The Triple Goddess took that magic and put it all in one place, in one unborn baby, in the hope that said baby would grow into his power, and restore balance and compassion to the world. The Druids call him Emrys but it's just a title, like King, or Sir, not his real name. He, and the Once and Future King, are meant to rule with the support of one another, uniting all of Albion under the King’s rule, and bringing magic back into the land. Emrys and the Forever King, two sides of the same coin, their destinies interwoven."
Merlin goes silent at that, and Arthur thinks he knows where this is going, but he Needs the confirmation:
"What's that got to do with anything?" is quietly muttered.
"You're the Forever King Arthur. And I am Emrys. Though it's weird enough when the druids call me that so just... let's stick with Merlin alright?"
"All those times you said I would be a great King, all those times you had unfailing faith in me, was because of destiny?"
Arthur tries not so sound hurt, but he’s never cared for, or believed, in destiny. Up until now he'd thought Merlin had had faith in him as Arthur, his friend, not as some prophetic Once and Future King that Arthur was afraid he would never be.
"At first, sure. I was angry, that my destiny had been decided for me. That I couldn't just ignore it because if I did then the world would never know peace. I never asked for that responsibility I just wanted... I just wanted to keep my mother safe. I wanted to learn how to be a physician and use my magic to help and entertain and brighten the world. Just a little bit. And suddenly I had this big important role to play. I hated it. But I did it anyway, kept you safe. And then I got to know you as a person and you weren't your father. You Love Camelot, you Love your people, you're a good man who does everything in his power to help those around him, even if they don't deserve it sometimes. And suddenly, having my destiny be to help you to greatness... well, it didn't seem so bad anymore. Maybe it was your destiny to be that Great King from prophecy, because you were already a good man."
Arthur is speechless at that. Tears gather in his eyes but neither of them mention it and he doesn't let them fall. Merlin had been almost as nice as that in the past, but never so fully, and with the weight of the truth behind it, it seemed much more meaningful.
Merlin gives him a sad smile before he continues:
"I'm your servant until the day I die Arthur. I have faith that one day, you'll do the right thing."
Arthur suddenly remember the whole point of this conversation. That Merlin was upset and angry that he hadn't repealed the ban on magic yet, that Merlin was still waiting on him. Waiting on him to do the right thing. Waiting on him to fulfil his destiny.
~
Maybe they head straight home? Merlin walks into Arthur's chambers the next morning to find him already up and pacing, making a start on the repeal?
Maybe Arthur demands they go to the closest Druid settlement so he can consult them on how he should go about it? Merlin’s knowledge of magic is great and all, but neither of them were alive before the purge, neither know how it would work practically.
All I know, is whenever Merlin first comes across Arthur working on the repeal, determination in his eyes, he cries a little. That everything he sacrificed is finally paying off.
I also know, that the first time Arthur timidly asks Merlin to show him something magical (maybe that's straight after this tiring conversation, or maybe its days later, back in the safety of Arthur's locked chambers) Merlin cries even harder, Arthur is still scared of magic, how could he not be. But he loves and trusts Merlin more than anything in this world, and he wants to learn to not be scared anymore.
“So is Y/N coming?” Clay asked Sonny, as he brought the tray of meat out to him.
“Yeah, she will be here any time,” Sonny laughed, “Why so interested in her Blondie? Every time I have a get together you always ask if she is coming.”
“No reason,” Clay laughed, not wanting to admit that he had a crush on you, he had for the last couple of years. In fact the moment he had joined Bravo team, the moment he saw you that was it, he was a goner. But he never acted on his feelings because you were in a committed relationship but now you were single, he was going to shoot his shot.
“Stop lying,” Sonny laughed, “I have seen the way you look at her, how you hang off every word when shes telling a story, you like her don’t you?”
“Urm yeah,” Clay mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. Not sure how Sonny would take the news that he was crushing hard on someone that was basically his little sister.
“All I say is good fucking luck,” Sonny laughed, “After her that dickhead cheated on her she doesn’t trust easily and apparently she is never falling in love again, they weren’t her exact words but it was along those lines.”
“Trust me, I have the charm, I’m sure I can show her how love can be.” Clay shrugged, as the sound of the garden gate slammed closed, gaining their attention.
“Speak of the devil,” Sonny chuckled, “but if you can break through the walls she has built then go for it.”
The moment you walked into the garden, you near enough froze as your eyes landed on Clay, it had been awhile since you had seen him due to work but damn he had had a glow up, it was obvious he had spent most of his free time in the gym, the way his shirt pulled against this biceps, made your mouth water, add the backwards cap and fuck you nearly melted. Your brain malfunctioning.
Mentally you cursed yourself, he was Sonny’s best friend, you couldn’t go there even if you wanted to. You weren't going to open your heart to someone that you wouldn’t be able to avoid if things went wrong. Shaking off the thoughts, you made your way over to Sonny, who engulfed you in a tight hug.
“Good to see you could make it,” Sonny laughed, passing you a beer “I’m surprised work let you out of that cage they had you in.”
“Yeah, well I kinda quit, so you will be seeing me a lot more now Quinn.” You smirked.
“It's about time you grew the balls to quit.” He nodded.
Slowly you made your way around the group, hugging everyone and catching up, leaving Clay till last because for some reason all your confidence went out the window the moment you saw him.
Tumblr media
The beers and food were flowing and there was a buzz in the air. This was what your life was missing, you missed being around Bravo.
You were now in the kitchen, having a moment to compose yourself, Clay had been flirting with you all night and you didn’t know how much longer you could take.
“You ran off,” He laughed, standing behind you, so close you could feel his chest pressed against your back.
“I needed to pee” You laughed.
“I have to say, you are looking good, I know its been a while since I last saw you and all I can think is damn,” He hummed, his hot breath tickling your neck, “The new hair colour really suits you.”
“Clay,” You whispered, you needed the flirting to stop, there was another reason you hadn’t been around as much and that was because you were starting to develop feelings for the youngest member of Bravo. “Please stop flirting with me, I am not going to fall for it.”
“Oh really,” Clay chuckled, as he placed his hands on your hips, “What's up scared by flirting with me that it will lead to something?”
“Spenser, flirting leads to something 99% of the time,” You whispered, trying to control your breathing and ignore the feel of electricity running through your skin as he ran his thumb over the skin on your hips.
“Maybe it doesn’t, maybe it's just a bit of fun.” He whispered.
“Clay,” You whispered. “You are Sonny’s best friend, nothing can happen between us.” Somehow you managed to wiggle out of his arms, you needed some air.
You wanted to open your heart up, you wanted to see what happened with Clay but something was holding you back and you weren't quite sure what it was. You knew in your heart you would be good together, the two of you had always been good and people actually thought you were a couple about a year ago but you just couldn’t make the leap.
“You okay there?” Sonny asked, nudging your shoulder.
“I’m not actually feeling great,” You mumbled, “I’m gonna take a nap I think.”
“You know where my bed is,” Sonny smiled, he had seen you and Clay in the kitchen and he knew you were lying to him but he played along, it was worth it not to get a black eye for asking questions. “I will come check on you in about an hour.”
Nodding at him, you made your way inside the house and headed to his bedroom. Your mind was racing and you didn’t know what to do or whether to listen to your head or heart.
Tumblr media
It had been a month since Sonny’s get together, and somehow you had managed to avoid Clay. To be honest it was pretty easy as they got spun up and had been for the last two weeks. But ever since that night you hadn’t been able to get him out of your head, he had taken over your thoughts, and now your dreams.
The text you received from Sonny was vague to say the least, but it was Sonny afterall so you didn’t question it. All you knew was it involved food and that's all you cared about. But the one thing that confused you was he wanted you to meet him at the park, which could only mean a picnic and they definitely weren't Sonny’s style.
As you got closer to the spot you were told, you saw someone sitting on the blanket, but it wasn’t Sonny. It was Clay, and in that moment you were ready to kill Sonny for this set up.
“You don’t give up do you?” You laughed, sitting down on the blanket.
“I just want a chance,” Clay whispered.
“I’ve sat down haven't I?” You smirked, you had done a lot of thinking over the last month and you were willing to listen to your heart, you had missed the feeling of being in love, you missed having that someone to come home to and you missed being held. “One chance Spenser, this is your one chance.”
“Really?” He whispered, taking your hand in his.
“Yes, for some reason I can’t get you off my mind and it’s driving me crazy.” You admitted.
It felt like time had stood still, the hours passed, your stomach hurt from laughing so much. Both of your phones were thrown in the bottom of the picnic basket and you were enjoying the company. You had your head in Clay’s lap, as he ran his fingers through your hair.
“I have a confession,” You giggled, “So the night of Sonny’s get together last month, you stopped me in my tracks, the moment I saw you I was pretty sure my brain malfunctioned.”
“Welcome to my world for the last couple of years every time you walked into a room,” Clay smiled, brushing his knuckles against your cheek.
“What the hell,” You whispered, sitting up right. You had nothing to lose at the moment and you needed to know if that spark was there. So you took a deep breath before kissing him.
It took Clay a couple of seconds for his brain to realise what was happening, but he smiled into the kiss, as he wrapped his arm around your waist, gently guiding you down so you were laying down with him hovering over you.
Your lips move in sync with one another, your fingers playing with the hair on the back on his neck, your stomach was doing flips, your heart was racing. You knew you were fucked, the sparks were there, the way he made you feel was something no one else had managed. But there was something about Clay that made you want to take the risk.
“So does this mean I get more than one night?” He breathed against your lips, making you laugh.
“You are a dork,” You giggled.
“Serious question now, does this mean you will be my girl?” He asked, his eyes sparkling in the light from the sunset.
“I like the sound of that,” You whispered, “Your girl.”
chapter two; the incident
content warning; smoking, drinking, hand and blow job, face-fucking
Tumblr media
8 months ago
eren jaeger didn't have much to do in his free time. no sports, no care for studying extra, nothing. he spent his days drinking, smoking, fucking. his days were on repeat, over and over again.
he was in a frat, not that he actually cared about it. it was just free access to booze and parties. but constant partying for him can get a little... boring. nothing interesting, or new, happened anymore. he was about to lock himself in his room the whole night, since he heard about all the freshmen that would be coming. just a bunch of kids who think they’re grown, he couldn’t be bothered with that.
“hist’, don't you think this a bit much?”
you emerged from historia’s bathroom, wearing the outfit she picked out for you. “its perfect!” she squealed, running up to you, “you look so hot, y/n!!”
playfully rolling your eyes at her, you patted the top of her blonde head. “but this is my first party, what kind of impression is this?” the outfit she left you wasn't casual, at all. it was revealing, up from your chest, down to every curve it perfectly squeezed.
“one saying that you’re fucking hot. reiner should be there too, i think he's grown a liking to you.” she winked at you before running back over to get her shoes, leaving you flustered in the door frame.
brushing it off with a cough, you walked over the the door of historia’s dorm.
“we’ve only been here, i’ve only known him for a month. plus isn’t he two years older than us? he wouldn't want to be with someone so inexperienced, in every field, like me.”
“that doesn't mean shit, y/n.” taking her small bag, she walked over to the door as you held it open.
“hmm, what about you? i think ymir’s trying to get close, don't you think?”
quickly turning her head away from you, her ears peaked out of her hair with a light pink tint to them.
“what! that's crazy, she's just being friendly!” walking away towards the building exit, you giggled while running up behind her. “yeah yeah, what ever you say"
walking into the loud and foggy house, you had to hold on tight to historia, or you'd get lost with the amount of people. this was your first college party after all. historia has been to plenty in your month of being here, but you've never seemed to care about them. grabbing your hand, she guided you into a small, secluded living-room area.
“wow, you dragged y/n out for once. impressive, really historia.”
“thanks, guess i just have that charm.” giving jean a playful wink, she sat down next to ymir, as her hand found her way around her waist. you on the other hand took a seat next to jean, rolling your eyes at him.
“nice outfit.” he couldn't be anymore obvious as his eyes wandered down every part of your body. “thanks. do you know...- do you know if reiner’s here?”
“oh yeah my bad, forgot you have the hots for blondie. he should be outside, maybe by the pool.” you gave him a nod as you stood back up onto your feet. you tried to tell historia where you were going, but her mouth was already occupied being shoved into ymir’s face.
surprisingly, it didn't take you that long to find the backdoors of the house. you took a step outside, a slight breeze greeting your face. there was one problem though, reiner was no where to be found. your eyes scanned the backyard, but you still couldn't find him. and a guy like him was hard to miss. who did catch your eye was a certain tall brunette.
“bertholdt!” running up to him, you rested your hand on his shoulder. “o-oh y/n, hey!”
“do you have any clue where reiner is?” you removed your hand from his shoulder, you were unsure if you were making him nervous or uncomfortable. either way you liked reiner and didn't want to leave a bad impression by making his best friend uncomfortable. “actually i do!” he turned you around and pointed towards a small bar in the corner. “he should be over there... if not he’ll be back soon, probably taking a piss or something”
“ok, thanks ber!”
“anytime, y/n” you gave him a smile before walking over to the bar. reiner was still no where to be found. you were about to give up and go back to historia inside, until you felt a certain pair of strong arms wrap around your waist from behind.
“hi.”
“reiner... hey.” he loosened his grip around your waist, allowing you to turn around and properly hug him. “i've been lookin for you”
he let go of you and pulled out a chair for you to sit in before walking behind the bar. “yeah, sorry about that. you want something to drink?”
“i’ll just have water for now.” giving you a smile, he leaned over to pull a water bottle out of the mini fridge.
“toss me one too, bartender.” a semi-deep voice caught you off guard, creeping up behind you. feeling your breath shaken up, you had to cover it up by cleaning your throat. “thought you weren't coming down tonight, eren.”
reiner tossed the water bottle behind you, the man catching it. he took a seat down next to you, giving you a better look of all his features. dark brown hair, sloppily thrown into a messy bun, defined face, beautiful eyes. he was wearing a pear of black sweats and an opened zip of hoodie, no shirt. you felt like you were about to drool as his defined abs glowed in the lights surrounding the bar.
“not staying, i was just thirsty.” his eyes shifted towards you. you felt the goosebumps rise onto your skin as he looked you up and down. “this the girl you've been babbling about?”
“hey! what're your talking about man...”
“no need to be all shy, reiner.” he held out his hand in front of you. “eren jaeger.” you took the hand into yours, shaking it. it was rough and veiny, a few rings thrown onto it. “f/n. f/n l/n.”
shaking his hand for a few seconds, you didn't want to let go. it felt so warm, comforting. but not to be creepy, you pulled your hand away and placed it back onto your water bottle. “well, ill leave you two be.”
and just like that, he picked up his bottle and walked back into the house. “i think i’ll take up that drink-... actual drink offer.”
it was no surprise, or secret, that you were a light weight. it didn't take long for the night to progress, as you getting drunker and drunker hanging out with reiner. its been about two hours since you started drinking, and your head was spinning. you ended up loosing reiner somewhere along the way, and met back up with historia.
you and a bunch of her friends sat slouched on the couch, completely wasted. you all just wanted to go back into your beds, but figured you needed some time to cool off before heading back. “where's the bathroom?” you pushed yourself up, rubbing your forehead.
“you can use the one upstairs since no one down here would use that one, third door on your left.”
thanking jean, you dragged yourself off the sofa and up the nearby staircase of the house. you turned down to a long hallway of doors, finding the bathroom. third door on the... right?
opening the door, you defiantly were not met with the bathroom. a huge bed took up the room in front of you, the guy from before sitting on the edge of it. he had his head thrown back as he softly inhaled from a blunt. as he heard the door open, he turned his head, now facing you.
“s-sorry, i thought this was the bathroom.” he lifted up his hand free from the blunt, pointing across the hall. “its okay, right across from here.”
you gave him a nod as you were about to turn yourself around. “wait... someones in there, just use mine.”
“are you sure?” you took a small, hesitant, step into eren’s room. “yeah, its just a bathroom.”
he got himself up and walked over to the other side of the room, opening a white door for you. “thank you so much!” you ran over to him and entered the bathroom. “anytime.” he said as he closed the door from you.
the small room smelt just like him, the strong scent of cologne that lingered everywhere he went. finishing your business in the bathroom, you opened the door to find eren now seated at the edge of the bed facing the entrance of his room, the door closed.
“soo... you friends with reiner?” you stayed in the door frame of the bathroom, keeping your distance. “hm? oh yeah, you could say that.” yet again, he took the blunt up to his lips, inhaling the smoke.
“i don't bite, you know. you don't have to stand in the bathroom.” taking a deep breath, you shifted over towards eren. he patted the bed next to him, indicating for you to sit down. something about him made you nervous, just his whole vibe. but at the same time, his presence was comforting. you took a seat next to him, fidgeting with your fingers.
“you want a hit?” you cracked the knuckles in your fingers, looking down at the floor. even though you weren't looking in his direction, you felt his eyes burning right through you. “oh..- i don't know. i-i’ve never really, you know.”
“that's ok... do you wanna-, want to try something?” you didn't know how to respond. you were hesitant as you slightly shook your head, brining it up to face him.
“c'mere” he patted his lap, moving his sweatshirt out of the way. for some reason this felt... wrong. you liked reiner, you didn't want to mess that up. but god knows what a guy like him does while you're not around. you guys weren't necessarily dating, so you could use a little fun once in awhile. right?
you pushed yourself up onto eren’s lap, straddling his waist. you felt the heat rushing up all over your face, you probably looked like a nervous wreck. once you were situated, eren took his free hand up to gently cup your face. bringing his thumb down to your mouth, he used to part your lips and open your mouth. he kept it wide open, now gripping your jaw.
he pulled the blunt up to his lips, taking a deep inhale, but holding it in his mouth. he then hovered his face above yours, and opened his mouth above yours. bringing his lips just inches away from yours, he blew the smoke into your mouth.
if the sexual tension wasn't bad before... it could now be sliced clean. you accepted the smoke, inhaling it into your lungs. not that they reacted good. you immediately started clearing your throat, facing your head to the side. he let out a long, deep chuckle as you turned your head back to face him. why did he have to be so attractive.
you didn't even know this guy, but something about that made you want him all that more. you looked down into his eyes, slowly bringing your lips down to his. he beat you to it though, crashing his lips up onto yours. it wasn't something soft, or sweet. it was out of pure lust. rough and sloppily, he shoved his tongue into your mouth. taking in every part of him, you felt a way you've never felt before. but the guilt was coming up on you, reiner was the one you liked, yet the thought of him even existing left your mind as you mushed yourself into eren.
it didn't take long for your hands to wander down his already exposed chest, feeling up on everything. you gently traced your hands on the outline of his shoulder, before pushing the sweatshirt off his toned body. his hands found your hips, pushing them down onto himself. complying, you slowly started to grind your hips onto his now fully erect cock.
the short dress you were wearing was now fully ridden up your body, eren’s hands pulling it above your hips. not stoping the movement of your hips, your hands found their way down eren’s body, stopping at the waistband of his sweatpants. “you don't have to-”
you brought your eyes up to meet his once again. “want to though.” you slowly guided your hands down his sweatpants, into his boxers. before doing anything else, you pushed the both of you down onto eren’s plush mattress.
taking his pants and boxers, you pulled them down just enough for his cock to spring out and slam up against his abs. it was so pretty... pretty long and girthy, two long veins running down the shaft, and a pretty dark pink tip oozing pre-cum. you spat into your hand before carefully picking it up in your hands. brining your hand to the head, you took the pre cum and lathered his shaft in it and your saliva.
moving your body to the side a bit, you started off at a slow pace as you dragged your hand up and down his rock hard cock. picking up the pace of your hand, you had your eyes focused on his face. he had his head thrown back onto the pillows, squeezing his eyes shut. gaining some sort of confidence, you stopped the movement in your hands, and you pushed yourself down onto the bed. situating yourself onto eren’s legs, your brought the tip of his cock to your mouth, teasing it with your tongue. you weren't the best at this, but the way erens hands flew straight to your hair, you knew you wanted to try. try and make him feel good.
you wrapped your lips around the head of him, before pushing yourself down as far as you could.
“fuuuck-, y/n”
he propped himself back up onto his elbow, watching your every move. when you looked up to him, his mouth was hung wide open, but nothing came out. you continued the movement of your mouth, his grip on your hair only got tighter. he just couldn't help himself at this point. he thrusted his hips into your mouth, his cock hitting the back of your throat as you let out a small gag, which only sent vibrations around him. you didn't want him to stop though. it didn't take long of him pulling your head up and down before he came. slightly salty cum squirting out right down your throat.
he pulled you back up, as you swallowed as much as you could, some still dribbling out from your mouth. you both let out a long breath as you closed your eyes. before eren could flip you back onto the bed, you stood up onto the ground.
“wait-”
you pulled your dress back down over your bottom half and brushed it off. “i should get back to my friends, they probably want to leave.”
he sat himself onto the bed and grabbed your hand into his, gently. “are you sure? i feel bad that you didn't-”
“don't worry about it! anyways im a... uh-”
“virgin... hm i wouldn’t have guessed that.” you didn't know how to take that, so you just brushed it off with an awkward chuckle.
“can i have your number anyway?” you nodded your head as eren pulled out his phone. he unlocked it, pulling up a blank contact page. you happily put in your information before returning his phone back to him.
“ill text you, eren!” you walked over to the door of his room, opening the handle.
“good. i have to talk to you anyway.”
Miles Between Us Chapter 15 ~Etched On Wood~
Previously in The Element of Surprise
Annalise perked up at Claire's feeble attempt to sound less grumpy. "Har de har har! I didn't realise you could be funny before coffee. A total package for a marauding pirate if I may say so."
"Tell that to Captain Beard," she mumbled, getting out of bed.
"Aye, matey!" Annalise mischievously winked. "That's if he happens to be in Isle of Harris this weekend. Which is where, by the way, we're going, as in, now! So get packing!"
Claire stilled and shook her head. "Wot?" She began to shake her head, tugging the covers around her as she made her way to the dresser. "Oh no, no, no! I'm not leaving this place for any man or woman, including you, blondie! I've got a pile of work to do. You know I have deadlines."
"Oh no, you don't. You stop right there, missy! Have you forgotten you agreed with Jamie to take a weekend break?"
Claire's eyes widened. "Oh, did he also tell you how he got me to agree?"
"No. But you can tell me later on the plane."
  Claire stood in the quaint wonderland of whisky, gin and assorted spirits, also known as The Island Spirit Whisky Shop. One side of the store was given over to the whiskies, while numerous craft gins and spiced rums were on the other. Absently, she touched one of the bottles of liquid gold, mentally calculating how many bottles she could fit in her small luggage to bring back as presents. When she heard laughter, she glanced up to find Annalise sampling a dram with the owner, effectively ending her dithering and opting to grab just a bottle of single malt in front of her instead. They'd just arrived in Stornaway over an hour ago and decided to put her gift shopping spree on hold .
Annalise raised a whisky glass and winked. "You better start getting busy. Our driver isn't going to hang around and wait for us all day. Found anything you like?"
Claire approached her friend and showed the bottle. "Aberfeldy, sixteen years old. For us tonight."
"Very nice. Glad to see you warming up to this trip for a change. How long has it been since you last checked your phone for Jamie's message?"
"Five minutes," she replied, scrunching her nose at Annalise for bringing up the sore subject. She handed the bottle and her credit card to the shop owner before facing her friend. "I've sent Jamie a message, and he hasn't replied yet. He's got some explaining to do ...sending me away like this with too little notice." She let out an unladylike grunt. "Why can't our men be here? We're in a beautiful location ...romantic even ..." She waved a hand in the air to prove a point. "I don't understand why you're not so bothered not spending time with your boyfriend when you rarely see him, and you're only here until Monday."
"Oh, poor us girls! Without our men! God help us!"
Claire fought a smile. "Hey, now, if I recall correctly, I had to listen to you moan endlessly about not seeing Willie enough. What was that again, you said just a week ago over the phone?" She tapped her chin and pretended to go through her memory bank. "You can't stand living without him."
"Correction, missy. I told you I couldn't stand living on my own in London. Which means I'm not used to not having you around."
"Ah, my mistake. Must have misheard that part." Annalise snorted a laugh and went to grab a bottle of gin from the shelf, leaving Claire once again to thoughts of Jamie. Any day now, John would summon her back to London, probably with Mary Hawkins and Tom Christie in tow. Though she dreaded going back, she'd placated those thoughts by telling herself she'd be moving to the Highlands soon.
Despite the valuable inroads to their relationship, Claire wondered if she would have given up London and her job so soon, supposing that Jamie hadn't had PTSD. Would their relationship have moved this fast? She immediately quelled that thought because deep down, she knew in her heart whatever their circumstances might have been, they would have chosen to be together whether it was too soon or not.
She glanced once more at her phone, inwardly debating whether to call Jamie or not. What the hell is he up to? She hadn't heard a peep from him since she'd left the cottage. Something was definitely up, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
"So, this work of yours is moving along fast. I bet you can't wait to start your life in the Highlands with your love, no less. So, what's the plan? Are you and Jamie buying a bigger property together, or will you be staying in the cottage to see how the relationship pans out?"
"His cottage for now. As for what lies ahead, we haven't talked about that far into the future yet."
"Quite right. Future planning is tedious, anyway. It's pretty obvious you and Jamie are meant to be together, no matter what. I saw it coming from a mile away. The way he looks at you ...you can literally see smoke coming out of his ears." Annalise comically waggled her eyebrows as she eyed the other sample bottles on the counter.
"Well, since we're talking about the future and wotnots," Claire began, lowering her voice, "I have been doing a lot of thinking myself. For starters, I want to have Jamie's babies one day."
Annalise's eyes widened.
She frowned. "Wot?"
"Babies?"
"Yes, babies." When Annalise continued to stare at her, Claire groaned. "Not now, though, silly! Our relationship might be going at full speed, but God ...I have other plans in mind before that happens."
"Yes, I get that ...but ...but have you and Jamie talked about babies?"
Claire gave the store owner an apologetic smile and pulled Annalise into the alcove by the window. "No. As I said, we haven't talked anything about the future. What's wrong with you? I know it's too early to be talking about babies, but everyone knows where our relationship is heading to. Eventually, somewhere down the line, starting a family would be the next step. Or did you think my move to the Highlands is experimental?"
"No! Of course not! It's not that ... it's..."
"It's wot?"
"I, ah ...the babies part."
"Jesus, Annalise, what's your fret about babies?"
"There's no fret!"
"What is it then?"
"I, ... I'm not sure if I should be the one telling you this, but ..."
"Tell me wot?"
"I thought you knew because why else would Jamie ..."
"Know what? For God's sake, spit it all out! It quite apparent you know something."
Annalise shook her head and sighed. "It's something Willie told me. It was right after when Jamie started to remember bits and pieces about his past. Willie thinks Jamie may have been deeply affected by what he'd learned. You know ...him witnessing your parents' death and you becoming an orphan at such a young age." She puffed out a breath. "Jamie confided to his brother that ...he doesn't want to have children because he doesn't think he'd be able to bear it if they would go through something as horrible as what you've both been through. I know that's not really Jamie talking, and I understand those fears are coming from a place brought about by his condition. Maybe it's something both of you should talk about. I thought Jamie might have already mentioned it."
Claire paused for a few heartbeats, absorbing Annalise's words. Should I be worried? A part of her knew it was his PTSD symptoms amplifying those fears in Jamie's head. The other part, she wasn't too sure. But he'd made so much progress, she thought. She waved a hand in dismissal and let out a humourless laugh. "Oh ... don't worry about it. I'm pretty sure Jamie didn't mean to say that in its entirety. You know how men are like ...they tend to have reservations about children and stuff like that in the beginning. Besides, he understands how his condition affects his reasoning, decisions and emotions. He's very aware of that. He told me so. So him saying not wanting to have children is not a projection of what's truly in his heart." She gave her friend a reassuring smile even though a smidge of uncertainty was starting to creep in. "Jamie and I are in love," she said with all the conviction she could muster. "And we've proven that with love, we can achieve anything. As for his current views about not having children, they will eventually change. After what he's been through, it's understandable he'd be worried about history repeating itself. He's slowly but surely recovering, and as soon as the new therapist arrives, it can only get better from there. I'm quite sure of it"
"Claire ..."
"There's nothing to worry about," she said firmly this time.
Annalise grabbed her hand. "Claire ...I have no doubt that he loves you. Even a blind man can see that. But think about this. What if ...what if he can't give you what you want? I mean babies. That's what you want one day, isn't it?" When Claire nodded, she continued. "You should talk to Jamie about your dreams of having children one day before moving here to Scotland. I don't want you to invest your time and emotion in a relationship that will probably end in regrets. I like Jamie, and I love you, and I love the love you have for each other. But I don't want to see the both of you hurt ...just because you failed to see each other eye to eye. Please promise me you'll talk about this with Jamie before turning your life upside down and moving here to Scotland and start playing house. There's a lot at stake here, Claire. Please, just talk to him. At least you know if you're both on the same page or not."
"Fine. I'll talk to Jamie. But under one condition." Annalise nodded in response. "If we're going to have this break together, promise me to refrain from any more baby talks."
"You started it."
Claire sighed. "Yes, I did," she admitted. "But it ends now."
"Alright, but I'm only going to say one more thing and then we can go back to holiday mode." Annalise made a broad gesture. "I can see that our little talk rattled you a bit. And don't you dare deny it!" When Claire shrugged and made a gesture to carry on, she proceeded. "I just want you to know, despite the uncertainties you may be harbouring right now, ...thanks to my big mouth, nothing changes the fact that Jamie loves you. I'm sure after you've talked, you'll arrive at some compromise about this baby thingy."
Despite herself, Claire laughed out loud and rolled her eyes. "Holy hell, we sure are a bizarre duo, aren't we? Poor Jamie. Here we are talking about babies when he probably hasn't even thought about marriage. If he could hear us talk right now, he'll probably put me on the next flight to London."
Annalise looked at her sheepishly. "Or perhaps not. Shall we get going?"
She raised a dubious eyebrow at her friend. "Hey. What's that look for?"
Annalise wandered back to the check-out counter, laughing. "That was my wise, venerable sage look. You like?"
"No, knock it bloody off!"
..........
Jamie pressed the cold pack against his throbbing eye and tried unsuccessfully to tamp down his irritation at Quentin. Stood in the cottage's open space lounge, which comprised the kitchen and dining area, he turned away to face one of the floor-to-ceiling windows. For the first time, he noticed the stunning vistas before him. Looking out to the south, there's the view of the village and valley, and the west the vast, beautiful beach, and to the north, the rolling hills. Under normal circumstances, he would have enjoyed the sceneries, but the crunching sound of Quentin's meat mallet on walnuts might as well have been a tree stump grinder splintering his skull.
"Do ye mind?" Jamie muttered, turning around to glower at Claire's uncle. "That godawful sound is making my headache worse."
"Stop whingeing." Quentin didn't bother to glance up from the chopping board on which he seemed resolved to make continuous head-splitting rackets. "Because of you, I haven't eaten all day. What kind of boys' trip is this anyway? There's no food or booze except for the bottle of expensive champagne... these walnuts ...and that ..." He jutted his chin at the fruit basket and shook his head in disgust. "Sorry I can't accommodate your headache." He watched the walnut shell fly across the counter when his mallet hit the chopping board. "As for the black eye, I'm sorry about that too."
Willie chuckled from behind his open newspaper as he lifted his feet to rest them on the coffee table. "Everyone will now think Claire dropped one on ye. How did it happen again? I didnae quite catch the whole story since both of ye were too busy grumbling at one another when I arrived."
Jamie glared with one eye. "As ye've already gathered, Quentin did this." He pointed his index finger at the evidence and adjusted the cold pack with a free hand. "And I cannae for the life of me understand why it was supposed to be a good thing."
"I told you already ...we had a bit of miscommunication," Quentin shot.
"Miscommunication?" Jamie sputtered, throwing a hand in the air in disbelief. He spun around and faced Willie. "I said to him if I start having one of my panic attacks on the ferry..."
"...you wanted to be knocked out," Quentin interjected.
"Jesus Christ! I never said that, and I wasnae having a panic attack. I was feeling queasy."
"Yes, so queasy he turned green," Quentin added, hammering the walnut with more force this time, making Jamie flinch at the offensive sound. "And here I thought he was having a panic attack. He never mentioned anything about being prone to seasickness. So when he started to act all weird on me, I decked him."
"On my eye of all places!" Jamie shouted, slamming the cold pack on the kitchen counter. "When I said I'd knock myself out, I meant I'd take my medication and sleep it off in the car." He pointed a finger to his eye. "Look at this ...I look like I participated in a pub brawl."
Willie glanced up before turning a page of the newspaper. "Aye, that ye do."
"Well, you should have told me more about your condition," Quentin stressed, pointing the mallet at him. "How was I supposed to know what a panic attack looks like?"
Jamie blew out a breath. "Even if it was a panic attack, what made ye think socking me on the eye is the answer?"
Quentin shrugged. "I guess I get panic attacks too, ...now there!" When Jamie turned away in frustration, he pressed on. "Look at the bright side ...I got rid of your seasickness and saved you from having a relapse."
"I told ye already I wasnae having a panic attack, and I havenae had one for some time now!"
"Hey, may I remind you that I offered to drive Claire and Annalise to the airport and fly in later as Willie did? Your brother would have been in a better position to deal with your condition. I know you wanted to talk more about that bloody bench, but ..." Quentin shook his head as if remembering something. "Say ...I still don't understand why we haven't gone altogether. All this palaver with keeping this whole thing a secret and Willie taking the next plane after dropping off the girls." He paused, his eyes narrowing. "Another thing, no one's told me yet where the girls were heading to."
Jamie gave his brother a warning cough.
Willie sighed and lowered his newspaper. "The lassies are somewhere having fun. Anyway, ye'll be getting yer wish granted. Ye'll be flying in my place when we return back to the mainland. Jamie told me CalMac ferries banned ye for a year."
Jamie bit back a smile at Willie's smooth change of subject.
"So Jamie told you." Quentin popped a walnut in his mouth. "Did he also tell you he didn't even try to explain to the police that it wasn't my intention to knock him out cold? That my intention was to help."
Jamie took a slow breath. "How could I? My head was still reeling from your punch. The police could only take in reports from eyewitnesses."
Quentin cast the mallet aside and flattened both hands on the counter. "All right, all right ....never mind that. What's done is done, and I apologised already." He paused for a few beats and frowned. "So ... what's happening now? Why are we sitting around in this cottage when we could be organising some grub and booze?"
"Just hang fire for a little bit more." Jamie took out his phone and pretended to fiddle with it. It was becoming more difficult to distract Quentin by the second, but he needed to do this right if his plan was going to work. "The landlord is supposed to stop by. It shouldn't be long now."
"Well ..." Quentin glanced at the wall clock. "If the landlord doesn't come anytime soon, I'm going to find the nearest pub. I'm starving. And don't tell me to eat fruits. I want a proper hot meal. And I need a drink after the morning we had."
Not happening! Jamie couldn't have him doing that. "Look, dinnae start lining yer imaginary shots just yet. Pubs open much later here. Maybe while we're waiting, ye can show me that bench we were talking about." He gave Quentin a meaningful look. "Remember? It's one of the reasons why we came here for. Ye've delayed it long enough bashing those walnuts."
Quentin lifted an eyebrow. "Can you blame me? If we'd eaten first, we wouldn't be having this discussion, and we could be looking at that bench already. As it stands, I have to settle for walnuts. Besides, can't the bench wait? You said this trip would be entertaining. And smashing walnuts is not my idea of entertainment."
Jesus, why does everything have to be difficult with this man?
Willie finally took pity on Jamie as he regarded them both with a mixture of impatience and amusement. "Look, I ken ye're both a bit on edge and didn't have a good start to the day." He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. "I know ye're hungry, Quentin, and I know yer eye's in pain, Jamie, but bickering at one another is no' gonnae help yer cause." He clasped his hands and gave Jamie a knowing look. "Why don't ye both go and look at that bloody bench while I wait here for the landlord. That way, we're getting something done. Fair enough?"
"Fine." Jamie and Quentin said simultaneously.
Willie's head briefly fell back, and he heaved a relieved exhale up at the ceiling. "Finally, they agreed on something."
Quentin ignored Willie and looked at Jamie. "Right, we might as well." He made a sweeping gesture with his arm. "If you'll follow me," he instructed before heading for the front door.
Jamie glanced at his brother, who just nodded and returned back to reading the newspaper. Rolling his head on his shoulders, he followed Quentin out of the house and to the back garden.
Halfway, Quentin glanced back at him. "So ...about that bench, you still remember this place?"
"Only vaguely," Jamie responded quietly, overcome with acute nostalgia as he began to take in his surroundings.
The last few nights, while Claire had been cooped up in the shed doing edits, he and Quentin had been trying to piece their history together, mostly to help Jamie understand the past. It had been a frustrating feat at best for Quentin, trying to unravel Jamie's memories as a toddler that they'd almost laid the past to rest. Until Jamie had mentioned a bench with engravings in a garden of a coastal retreat, he'd once visited as a wee bairn. To his astonishment, Quentin had immediately known the place. The more they'd talked about it, the more the memory of that day made sense and became vivid until an idea came to Jamie's mind ...to use this trip for his plan.
When they reached the back of the house, they came to a stop, and there in the middle of the freshly trimmed lawn was the bench. Fragmented images began to flood Jamie's brain, colliding together to form a vivid picture. As if being pulled by an invisible force, he made his way towards the seat. Laying a hand on the surface, he caressed the weather-worn wood, relying on his heart to know what to search for. When he found the familiar yet foreign carving, he knew he'd made the right decision to arrange this trip. "Here it is."
Quentin stooped down beside Jamie to take a better look. "Jesus, it is really here," he whispered. "Just as Henry told me." He glanced at Jamie. "And you remembered. How old were you when you were last here?"
Jamie sat on the bench and briefly squeezed his eyes shut. When he opened them again, he took a deep breath. "At the most, I must have been four. It was summer. My ma needed a break from us boys, so Murtagh took Willie and me on a trip here to visit Harry. Jenny stayed behind. I cannae mind what Harry was doing here, but I do remember him showing me this when my godfather disappeared into the house." His fingers traced the engraving. "I never understood then what it meant when he read it out to me. He'd told me it was our wee secret."
"It was a secret, alright. Henry wouldn't have wanted Murtagh to know."
"Aye, I sort of caught the gist of it then even though I was too young to understand."
Quentin spoke with a distant look in his eyes. "Henry told me everything that happened that day and how it had been difficult for him to keep their trip here a secret from Julia. It was supposed to be a surprise."
Jamie couldn't help laughing out loud. He knew the feeling. "Aye, I can imagine," he replied, hoping Quentin would finally take the hint and see the real reason behind this trip.
"Did you know Henry had always wanted a son for his firstborn?" Quentin asked out of the blue. "Don't get me wrong, though. Claire was the light of his life, and he loved her. So much so, he would stare at her for hours while she slept. So Julia told me anyway. But he'd always said he wanted a son. I think it had something to do with him spending a lot of time with you and your brother during the summer, even before he met Julia." He smiled at Jamie. "He had fond memories of you and your brother, and it was very apparent from the stories he told me of you."
"A son," Jamie murmured, shifting on the bench as another memory popped up. "Aye, he'd mentioned something about wanting a son. He used to joke about having one, one day ...a strong lad like me were his words." He got up from his position and scoured the seat once more with his fingers and eyes, trying hard to remember where the other etching was. "I seem to recall myself asking Harry what if the baby turns out to be a girl. I cannae mind his reply, but he told me to pick a girl's name because he'd already had one for a boy. After I picked one, he carved both names we came up with on this bench ... it's here somewhere."
"Really?" Propping his specs on his nose, Quentin hunched over and began to search. "Can you remember the name you chose?"
He shook his head. "I probably came up with something daft ...like some cartoon character Jenny used to watch. "
"Or perhaps not." Quentin hunkered down, gliding his hand over the wooden surface of the edge of the bench. "Take a look at this." He stood up and took a step back to allow Jamie to see better.
What Jamie saw next took his breath away and only confirmed that niggling feeling in his guts. It hadn't been a misplaced memory nor a dream. He unseeingly watched Quentin squat down again to take a better look at the engraving, barely able to formulate words to express his emotions over the thoughts running through his head. Was this Harry's way of sending him a message ...a blessing of some sort? Or was it just some quirk in the universe, and everything had been purely coincidental? If it was the former, he'd been taken on a merry rough ride, and he could almost envision Harry's delight at his handiwork, watching them by the sidelines. Like Quentin, he was momentarily at a loss for words.
"You know, Henry's been gone for years," Quentin finally spoke after a long silence. "And it astounds me that you refer to him by his nickname with such familiarity. Only Julia called him Harry. As a matter of fact, now that I think of it, sometimes you talk about him as if he's still alive. You may have forgotten many of your memories of Harry, but it's quite obvious the special bond you had with him is still there, and it must have made an impact on your life."
Jamie almost laughed out loud. If only Quentin knew. He debated whether to say anything about Harry's mysterious appearances, but after a few indecisive heartbeats, he thought, bugger it. He might as well let the cat out of the bag. "Harry has appeared to me," he blurted rapidly before he could change his mind. "Numerous time. As solid and as real as we are standing here right now."
Quentin frowned. "What do you mean?"
Briefly, he filled Quentin in on the mystery that was Harry, from the first time the appearances began and everything in between and watched an array of expressions register on the older man's face. "I've only shared this story with Willie and Claire, and now ...you. It's not something I like to share with just anyone. But because ye're Harry's brother, I thought ye ought to know as well."
Quentin let out a low whistle. "That's some story. I don't know what to say. I've never believed in all these mumbo-jumbo spirit sightings, but ..." He let out a huge sigh. "...though your story is bizarre, strangely enough, I believe you. That night when you mentioned this place and this bench, I dreamt of Henry after. For the first time in years. He was sat right here, not saying a word. That's why I agreed to go on this trip. The notion that he may be trying to say something did occur to me and thought I might as well see this special place of Henry and Julia for myself."
Jamie let out an exhale of relief just as he saw Willie walking in their direction. His brother made a motion of tapping his watch, which could only mean one thing. He needed to make a move. Straightening up to his full body height, Jamie faced Quentin and cleared his throat. "Speaking about this place ..." He swallowed and braced himself. "I haven't been entirely honest with ye."
"Is that so?"
Willie came to stand beside them, a slow smile spreading across his face.
Jamie disregarded his brother's knowing smirk. "There's also another reason for this trip that I meant to tell ye."
Quentin muttered a curse. "You're going to tell me this isn't the all-lads trip you'd been going on about, is that it?"
"Aye ...no! I mean ..." He tunnelled impatient fingers through his hair. "What I meant to say is ...with everything falling into place ...Harry, the engravings on this bench a-and how our history are sort of intertwined together ...I -I thought ...right here and now would be a perfect time."
"Perfect time for?"
Jamie puffed out a breath. "Perfect time to ask for your blessing."
"Blessing for what?" Quentin's brow puckered, but by then, he knew Jamie well enough, and it only took a quick study of the situation to determine exactly what was going to be asked. Quentin's eyes widened at the realisation. "Holy hell, Jamie! Are you bloody kidding me? Is this what all this has been about?"
"It's been coming to this, cannae ye see it?" He worked to steady his voice. "Ye dreamt of Harry sat on this bench. That must mean something, and ye know it. Everything that's happened to me ...Claire coming to the Highlands ....those ..." He pointed at the bench. "...those engravings ....they didn't happen by chance. All of it has led to this day.."
"Jesus! I can't believe you're making me want to thump you a few hours after I just walloped you on the eye and apologised for it." He rolled up the sleeves of his top. "I was just beginning to warm up to you, lad. But it has to be done. It's a rule."
"Rule? What bloody rule?" He watched Quentin clenched and unclenched his fist. "Ye really are gonnae thump me, is that it?"
"Rule is rule," Willie murmured, watching them closely while sneaking glances at his phone. "But best get this settled soon because we dinnae have much time left."
"Time for what?" Quentin shot. "What the bloody hell is going on now?"
Jamie's patience was swiftly deteriorating. "Look, Quentin ...ye can thump me later, alright? I'll even offer ye my good eye. But right now, I need yer blessing."
Quentin laughed incredulously. "Listen, son, you don't get to schedule your own thumping."
That was the last straw. Whatever patience Jamie had left dissolved. There was no time for pussyfooting. He took two steps forward and brought his face close to Quentin's. The older man looked too shocked to react, so Jamie took advantage. "Listen to me, ye cantankerous ol' git. I tried being patient with ye because I know ye like me even if ye have a funny way of showing it. But this intent on giving me grief for whatever demented reason ye have and deriving joy out of it is bloody mental. So, I'm asking ye in the nicest possible way ...give me yer blessings. Ye're gonnae give it to me anyway. So cut out all this shite and give it to me now."
A tense silence between the men ensued, and they all stood stock-still waiting for each other to give in, and the only discernible sound to be heard was the waves crashing on the beach.
When the phone notification went off, Quentin and Jamie momentarily forgot their stand-off and whipped their attention to Willie. "So gentlemen, what is it going to be? It's nearly showtime."
Quentin's eyes narrowed. "Showtime?"
..........
"Òran na Mara," Claire read out loud as they drove past the hand-carved wooden sign. "Song of the sea. How very fitting."
"I think it's romantic," Annalise whispered in response, smiling at her from the passenger seat in front.
"Weel, here we are," the driver announced as they pulled into the driveway. "Welcome to yer home for the next few days."
Claire leaned forward to take a better look at the cottage with a thatched roof and stone wall. Though it retained its traditional features, the beautiful structure had all the subtle hallmarks of luxury, and she could tell it had been sympathetically modernised without compromising its original character. She smiled when she caught a glimpse of the white sand beach and the turquoise Atlantic ocean. "This is gorgeous, Annalise. Jamie's outdone himself with this surprise."
"He certainly has," Annalise grinned. "Shall we?"
They both hopped out, and while Annalise sorted out the driver, Claire could only stand there in awe of the surrounding. Everywhere she turned, there was something to look at - beaches, rolling hills, and islands on the horizon. She was so taken by the natural beauty around her, she didn't even notice the car drive away.
"Wait till you see inside. Jamie showed me pictures of the interior." Annalise walked up to the house and opened the wooden door, and Claire followed, hefting her luggage.
Inside was just as breathtaking as outside. "Wow," Claire breathed, admiring the views from the numerous windows. "This place is huge. There's probably enough room to accommodate ten people here. What are we going to do with all this space? The boys should have come."
Annalise just shrugged and smiled as she opened the glass door that led to the back garden overlooking the beach. "Why don't you go out and enjoy the view. There's a seat over there. I'll go and find us something to drink."
She stepped out of the cottage and sucked in a deep breath of salty air, and immediately felt at peace. Shading her eyes from the sun, she surveyed the curved bay of the beach and the peninsula in the backdrop. As far as she could see, there wasn't a soul in the area, nor were there passing cars to be heard, just the sound of nature, white sands and blue skies ahead. Oddly enough, the scenery uncannily reminded her of her mother's painting, which hung in her family home in Oxford, making her momentarily wonder if it was still there.
Sighing, she pulled out her phone and swiped the screen. There was still no message from Jamie. She decided it was no use pining over him when he must have spent a fortune sending her here to have some quality time with her best friend. He was thoughtful that way, even though sometimes to a fault. With a shake of her head, she shoved her phone back in her jeans, but something brought her up short as she made her way towards the bench. A familiar scent.
Before she could turn around to seek for the source, a pair of strong arms slid around her waist, soft, warm lips gliding along the back of her neck.
Exhilaration snapped in her veins. "Jamie," she breathed, turning around to wrap him in her arms. "You're here."
"I'm here," Jamie returned gruffly, his big hand rubbing circles on the small of her back. "Did ye really think I'd let ye out of my sight for a whole weekend when ye could be returning to London anytime soon?" He buried his face in the crook of her neck, nuzzling his nose against her skin.
"A part of me didn't think so." She tipped her head back and forced him to look at her. When his face came to view, she did a double-take. "Your eye! What happened?"
His lips twitched. "Dinnae fash, Sassenach. It's just a minor accident. So, do ye like yer surprise?"
Her lungs released the pent-up breath she was holding in a rush. "I love it and even more so now that you're here."
He smiled and took a moment to search her eyes before their mouths joined, warm hands cradling her face. His tongue parted her lips and stroked with the utmost tenderness in a slow, savouring kiss making her aware of their hearts pounding in unison.
"Sassenach ..." He trailed off to brush his lips against her temple. "Before anything else, there's something I have to show ye."
She arched an eyebrow at him. "Another surprise?"
Tongue tucked into his cheek, he momentarily glanced over her shoulder before his gaze ticked back to hers. "I suppose ye can call it that. Have ye been here before?"
She noticed the immediate gravity in Jamie's expression as he kissed her brow. "No. I haven't. But I must admit this place does feel familiar."
"How so?"
"The views ...it reminds me of my mother's painting. She's probably been here at one point."
He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "She was."
"She was? How do you know? Uncle Lamb told you?" she asked rapidly.
"Patience, woman! Too many questions all at once." He tugged her towards the bench, and when he let go, he stooped over the seat and ran a hand over the wooden surface. He glanced up at her and smiled. "Come here and take a look at this."
Claire did as she was told, and as she crouched down, her eyes landed on a string of words carved in what looked like a feeble attempt at calligraphy.
 Henry and Julia - At the end, as at the start, through all the in-betweens, until the world stops spinning.
 A choppy breath passed her lips as she ran her fingertips over the etchings. "It's my mum and dad."
"Aye."
"They were here." She stood up and looked around her, this time, trying to see the surroundings through their eyes. "It makes sense dad brought mum to this place. It's so romantic, and from stories I've been told, he was just ...that. And I can imagine my mum sitting here on this very spot, capturing the moment with her artwork." An intense wave of gratitude suddenly rose, almost making the moisture in her eyes spill. Jamie had done this for her because he knew, just like him, she was trying to put the pieces of her past together. "God, this is bloody insane. I wouldn't have seen this if we hadn't met."
"Ye want to hear the best part?"
She gave him a wobbly smile. "Go on then."
"Yer da proposed to your ma on this very bench."
She let out a soft expulsion of breath. Something expansive and extraordinary stirred within. It was as if, in this very moment, Jamie's revelation had taken back to her parents' past and was there to witness it. "I don't know what to say."
"The carvings on the bench was yer da's tribute to the day he proposed to yer ma."
"And you know this, how?" she asked quietly.
"Yer uncle and I put two and two together," Jamie explained, with a one-shoulder shrug. "I told ye ....some memories of my childhood have started to come back. Weel, this was one of them. When I mentioned to Quentin about how yer father showed me his handiwork on this bench when I was a wee lad, he'd figured this was the place Harry proposed. Yer father must have spoken of this place to yer uncle. I didnae understand any of it back then. I was too young. I wouldnae have realised the significance of it if I hadn't told Quentin about it. After some thoughts, I knew I had to come back and see it for myself just to prove I hadn't imagined any of it."
"But did you have to put me on a charter plane?" she softly admonished. "With Tom Christie? Are you mates with him now?"
"Tom is often hired to fly some goods to Stornoway for some restaurant. When I heard he'd be flying today, I thought it fitted perfectly with my plan. I must admit it pained me to ask him to take ye girls, but he was happy enough to sneak ye in."
"We could have flown here together."
"Aye, we could have." He took her hand in his and played with her fingers. "But I wasnae sure how I'd fare in the plane with my PTSD. Besides, I had a few personal businesses to attend to.
"Such as?"
He shook his head in amusement and kissed her lips, lingering there before drawing away. "Ye're distracting me, Sassenach and I still have something to show ye."
She heard Annalise's laughter coming from the cottage. "I presume Willie is here with you too."
"Your presumption is correct. Now stop asking questions and take a look at this." He pulled her towards the other end of the bench.
She sighed. "Alright, let's see it then."
Jamie let go of her hand and tapped a finger on the spot. "Take a look."
Claire leaned forward and read the inscription.
 Jamie/Claire - the promise of greater things to come.
 She frowned as confusion settled upon her. "What's this?" She traced the grooved marks of the words with a fingertip. "This has the same indentation as the other engraving. And it looks old. This couldn't have been recent."
"Yer da wrote it."
She straightened up. "Wot? But what does it mean?"
Jamie blew out a breath. "He wrote the names he would name his firstborn. He chose my name for a boy, and I got to pick yers."
Her eyes widened. "You picked my name?"
"Apparently," he grinned.
A laugh bubbled out of her. "God, so much to take in. Whatever next?"
"This." Jamie picked up a paper bag she hadn't noticed before by the bench and pulled out a padded envelope. "It's from yer workplace." He read the sender. "Dreamcatcher."
She sighed, still reeling from what Jamie just told her. "It's probably from John," she murmured more to herself as she took the envelope. She tore it open and was surprised when she pulled out its content and realised it was a children's book. "It's from Louise." When Jamie gave her a bland look, she sat down on the bench and stared at it. "She's a good friend of Annalise and a children's book author as well as an illustrator. I convince her to publish with Dreamcatcher when she showed me her work. I admitted to her a while back I wanted to be a writer. Every time our paths would cross, she'd asked me if I'd done anything about it. And every time I told her I was still working as an editor, she would give me a disappointed look." She smiled and shook her head. "I wonder why she sent this to me." Admiring the colourful print, she ran her hand over the cover. "What a talented woman."
"So ...what is the book about?"
Claire examined the book. "It's about The Unicorn and the Lioness," she answered, reading the title and leafing through the pages. As she suspected, each page was beautifully and colourfully illustrated. "Well, shall we see what we have here?" She opened it to the beginning and began to read aloud.
 There once was a unicorn
That fell for a lioness.
She surprised him with her charm,
And her comeliness.
 She grinned as she flipped the page. "Unusual pairing," she observed, making a face at Jamie. "...but hey ...the unusual ones tend to be the best."
She licked her lips and continued reading.
 The two, you see,
Were from different worlds
So it made him wonder,
How'd it all unfurled?
 "Ah ... makes me wonder too," she added softly. "This is getting interesting."
Jamie laughed, angling his body so he could also see the pictures.
 In spite of their differences,
It was love at first sight.
Their feelings grew quickly,
Their hearts took to flight.
 She smiled and turned to the next page.
 The unicorn, his life,
Once troubled and scattered
Now calmed and on the mend
In all ways, that matter.
 She glanced up at him and grinned. "Well, love heals, so they say," she remarked with a wink. "And love is all there is."
"Love is all there is," Jamie echoed with amusement.
She took a deep breath and resumed where she left off.
 There were simply no words
For how lucky he'd become.
Without her by his side
Life would be hopelessly glum.
 She paused for a beat as a peculiar inkling tugged in her guts. Swallowing the odd knot in her throat, she forced herself to say something. Anything! "We wouldn't want the unicorn feeling glum now, would we?" she managed, suddenly unable to draw breath.
"No," he replied. "A glum unicorn would be a tragedy."
Oh, lordy, lordy! Is this what I think what's happening? She took a fortifying breath and lifted the next page with a shaky hand.
 It's hard to believe
Just how happy they were.
He could not conceive
Even one day without her.
 "Happy is good," she squeaked, working her throat to be heard.
"Happiness is always a good choice ...grab it while ye can," he returned quietly.
Unable to get a grip of her runaway thoughts, a dull pounding began in her chest, gradually accelerating and drowning out the noise in their surrounding, portraying the moment with a dreamlike quality. She peered up at Jamie. Underneath his handsome exterior, she could see he was anxious, the lines around his mouth more noticeable than usual. The bruise on his eye, as much as she didn't believe it resulted from an accident, added a mixture of masculinity and vulnerability. God, I love this man! She wanted to stand up and hug him and let him know she knew where he was going with this. But now was not the time to ease his anxiety. She needed to pull herself together to see through what Jamie had probably painstakingly arranged for this moment.
"Weel, are ye gonnae finish reading it?" he asked, interrupting her thoughts.
Batting a speck of non-existent dirt from the book, she filled her lungs, nodded and read the next lines.
 So he got on one knee
To hand her a gift
A tiny velvet box
Holding a silver piece
 A silver piece? A record-scratching moment descended upon her like a heavy lead. What's a silver piece? Had she misinterpreted Jamie's intention? But when she glanced up from the book, there he was kneeling in front of her. Holding an expensive-looking velvet ring box, looking determined and brimming with adoration. It's not a ring, Beauchamp! It's a silver piece ...whatever the heck that is. Get a grip. She mentally shook herself. Of course, it couldn't be a ring. It's too soon for him to be asking her hand in marriage. The tiny box had to contain a key to his cottage, ....but he'd already given her one. Perhaps he bought a new house?
"Are ye gonnae to open it?" he asked, breaking her thoughts.
At a loss for words, she took the velvet box with trembling fingers. She reminded herself to calm down. She wouldn't want to embarrass them both into thinking Jamie was proposing.
"It's no' gonnae open itself, Sassenach. Or do ye want to keep holding it until ye're ready?" His lips twitched at its corner, and a spark of amusement lit his eyes.
"I'm sorry," she mumbled. She took a deep breath and opened the tiny box. When she glimpsed its content, she could only manage a weak "Oh!" Nestled in the case was a shiny one-pound coin where the ring should have been. Too confused for words, she gave him a questioning look.
On his knees, Jamie edged himself forward and took her hand. Keeping his eyes on her, he kissed the inside of her wrist. "Sassenach ...ye ken how I've always talked about how fate in some strange, mysterious way brought us together?" Claire slowly nodded in response, unsure where he was going with this. "Weel, to this day, I still dinnae ken how it all works. This may sound mad. But with everything that's led to here and now, I firmly believe some force, unknown or known, has had a hand in bringing us together. And every day, I thank whoever is listening up there for bringing ye into my life."
Her heart swelled with love. "Jamie, you don't have to do this," she said, laying a hand on his cheeks. "I know what's in your heart."
"No." He took the coin from the box and pulled something from the back of his jeans. "I want to do this." Whatever he reached out for inside his pocket, he kept it hidden in his hand. He cleared his throat and gave her a small smile. "Loving ye is the best part of my life, Sassenach. You brought light and colour in, and for that, I'll always be grateful. Ye brought me back to life when I didnae even realise I'd stopped breathing. From the moment I first laid eyes on ye, I wanted ye for keeps. I want to be yers and for ye to be mine, and I promise I will always try my utmost best to keep ye happy."
"I've always been yours. And always will be. My move to the Highlands should have made that clear enough for you."
"Aye, I had no doubt about that. But I ken that stubborn, practical side of ye will try to argue what I'm about to ask ye is too soon." When he opened his hand, she gasped. On the middle of his palm was a three-diamond stone engagement ring with two smaller ones flanking a bigger brilliant round centre. Emotions tangled in her throat as he raised the one pound coin with his other hand. "If ye, like me, believe destiny ...the universe ...yer da or whatever ye wish to call it ...conspired to bring us together, I'm gonnae dare ye to leave it up to fate with this one-pound coin I have here."
"Wot?" Now she was utterly confused.
"I'm proposing a coin toss. The rules are simple, and it only takes five flips. If it comes up heads each time ... ye'll wear my ring. We dinnae have to marry right away. We can wait a day or ten years. Either way, I want ye to know I plan on loving ye straight through eternity. If the coin comes up tails, weel ..." he trailed off, shrugging. "I guess I have no choice but to wait until ye're ready."
She looked down at Jamie's opened palms, a coin in one hand and a ring in the other. He was doing this so she wouldn't feel pressured to marry but feel secure enough in the knowledge he'd always be waiting for her no matter how long. She squeezed her eyes shut and crammed her fingers to her lips to keep a cry from escaping. She was not interested in tossing a coin to prove they're meant for each other. What they felt for one another wasn't based on fate or luck. They'd met, fallen in love, and now they're taking their relationship to the next level. It's something that happened all the time. They may not love each other the easy way, but their hearts were in the right place every single time. They're rock solid, and she didn't need a flipping coin to tell her that.
When she opened her eyes, a sound broke free in her chest. "Bloody hell, Jamie! Just stop with all this silliness, and put the damn ring on my finger," she hiccuped, giving him her hand.
Jamie's shoulders drained of tension as his breath released in a rush. "Did ye just agree to marry me?"
Hot tears rolled down Claire's cheeks as she let out a watery laugh and fell back on the bench, right where her father had proposed to her mother all those years ago. Though it felt right, a slight uneasiness tried to sneak in when she remembered what Annalise had told her about Jamie's doubt about having children of his own. She searched his face, and all she could see was his love and promise to make her happy. Isn't everything supposed to fix itself when two people are in love? She made a decision not to bring it up ...for now. "Yes, Jamie. I did. I want to marry you too," she breathed as she watched him take her hand to slip the ring on her finger. When she gazed at it, she could only make out the twinkle of diamonds through her tears.
"Christ, I cannae believe ye ditched the coin toss. and agreed to marry me ...just like that."
"I don't need the coin toss to know we're meant for each other," she pointed out. "And you shouldn't either."
He gave her a boyish lopsided grin, one that he was very aware always had an effect on her. Damn! He rose to his full height, tugging her along with him. "Ye have no idea how happy you made me, Sassenach," he breathed, pulling her roughly against him and grazing her earlobe with his teeth. "Now, for the love of God, give yer man his engagement kiss."
Committing this moment to her memory, she slipped her hands under his top to feel the warmth of his skin. Standing on her tiptoes, she tipped her head back and laid a soft kiss on his lips. She smiled when his chest and stomach muscles strained and swelled underneath her touch. "Is that better?" she whispered.
Jamie muttered a curse under his breath, rolling his forehead side to side against hers. "Sassenach, I said kiss. Ye cannae touch me like that when there are people that could be watching us from the house."
"Why?"
"Jesus!" Jamie's exhale came out hot against her forehead. "Why? How am I going to walk back in there in this condition? Ye look at me so innocently when ye ken well I feel a little crazy right now. It wouldnae take much to get me going. Look at what ye do to me."
They both dropped their attention to the bulge straining against his jeans. "I see," she whispered with a shrug, drawing away. "Too bad. I guess we just have to have that celebratory kiss later ...when we're alone."
Looking pained, his hand dug into her hair, pulling her back in, in his hold. "Not too fast." His lips swept over hers before his tongue dipped inside to give her his own brand of teasing. Seconds ticked by while he tantalised with a deep kiss, causing a moan to pass her throat. She felt the shudder that passed through him, the ecstasy of this second, his love, the pressure of his lust pressing between their bodies, the awe and gratitude. It was their own private celebration, drowning everything else out and ...
A throat cleared gruffly. Jamie stiffened and dragged his lips from her mouth, pink blooming on the tips of his ears. Just beyond his shoulder, she saw uncle Lamb averting his eyes and rocking on his heels.
"Uncle Lamb?" Claire croaked. "Don't tell me you're on this as well?"
"Trust me, sweetheart, you're not the only one who's been bushwhacked."
"Bushwhacked?"
"I guess this is the part where we say, congratulations." Willie's voice cut through her surprise at seeing her uncle, causing her head to drop forward on Jamie's chest. As the reality of their surroundings slowly began to encroach, Claire somehow found the willpower to unwind her arms from Jamie's neck and turn around. Three pair of eyes were trained on them with a mixture of amusement and joy for their happiness and mild annoyance from her uncle.
"Aye, we're officially engaged," Jamie announced, his arm going around her waist to pull her back against his chest. He pressed his lap to her backside to let her know the situation in his pants.
Claire stifled a giggle and put on her best smile, fully aware of Jamie's mild discomfort. "We are, indeed," she grinned, leaning back to kiss the underside of Jamie's jaw. "I must admit, I never saw this coming." She lifted her hand to show them the ring.
Annalise whooped and clapped her hands. "Well, this call for a celebration then," she beamed, skipping towards them. "Let me see it."
Squeezing her hip, Jamie let her go. She smothered the urge to laugh when she supposed that probably nothing loses a man's erection faster than a sight of her uncle Lamb's tetchy demeanour. Dismissing her silly thoughts, Claire splayed her hand out for her friend. "It's gorgeous, isn't it?"
"Stunning. I'm so happy for you." She looked Claire in the eye and spoke for her ears only. "Did you tell him what we talked about earlier?"
"Which one?"
"Babies. Hello?"
Claire sighed. She didn't want to lie to her friend, nor did she want to taint the occasion by bringing the subject of future babies up. There was a time and place for that and now wasn't appropriate. She hugged Annalise briefly and spoke into her ears. "Everything is going to be fine."
Annalise brows furrowed, but when she saw how happy Claire was, she immediately dropped the subject. "If you say so."
"I know so," Claire smiled, pulling away from her friend at the sight of Willie approaching. "Now, scoot and celebrate with us."
Annalise did an eye-roll and let Willie through.
"Congratulations!" Willie broke in, raising the bottle of Moët in his hand and giving Jamie a high-five with the other. He dropped a kiss on Claire's cheek and grinned. "Welcome to the family, Claire. My not so wee bràthair doesnae mess about, does he?"
"Thank you," she smiled. "And, no, he certainly doesn't."
Jamie received a back slap and a hug from his brother while Claire watched her uncle slowly approached them, shoulders strained, and hands shoved in his pocket. Something was amiss. Quentin was avoiding her eyes, and she noticed his face was devoid of emotions. She strode to his side. "Seriously, uncle?" she hissed, disbelief colouring her tone.
Quentin ignored her. "You sneaky piece of shit!" he barked at Jamie.
"Oh, dear God, here we go again," Willie muttered, rubbing his hand over his face.
"Again?" Claire gasped as she noticed Annalise and Willie's eyes ricocheting between Jamie and Quentin. She was about to scold her uncle when his face broke into a grin. She held her breath and stilled in anticipation.
"Congratulations, son! I couldn't think of a better man for my niece!"
"About time ye realised it, ol' man," Jamie grinned.
"Who are you calling an old man?" Quentin ground out in mock displeasure.
Annalise, Willie and Claire gaped at Quentin.
"What?" Quentin chuckled. "If I'd come right out and told Jamie right at the start, I couldn't think of a better man for my niece, he would never have fought for her the way he did."
"What kind of logic is that?" Claire fumed.
Jamie crossed his arms. "Oh, this is gonnae be gold."
"It's a men thing, sweetheart and complicated," Quentin muttered, giving Jamie a dirty look.
"I'll try and keep up. Explain."
Quentin released an impatient sigh. "Men in your generation have none to too little backbone. Jamie had to realise he was good enough and strong enough for you. And you had to make him realise it. That's the top and bottom of it."
Her uncle was right, Claire thought. A few weeks ago, Jamie wouldn't have thought himself capable of coming this far with his condition. She might have been instrumental in pulling him out of the darkness where he'd lived for so long, but all the hard work had come from Jamie.
When Quentin took her hand and pulled her into an awkward embrace, she relaxed. "I'm not going to be around forever, darling," he said gruffly before pulling away to look her in the eyes. "I wanted to make sure you were in good hands if anything happened to me." He glanced at Jamie. "I had an inkling when Claire first told me about you, and we talked for the first time on that video chat, that your relationship was serious. The second I found out Henry's connection to you, I had to delve more into your history. When you started talking about fate and all that tripe, I didn't believe in it ...but these last few days, after spending time together, you made me believe in you. I saw something in you."
Quentin gestured toward the double-headed one-pound coin Jamie had left on the bench. "So when you tried to extract a blessing for this proposal after dragging me here under the pretence of a boys' weekend, I thought I'd have a little laugh and grant it by giving that coin Henry gave me and challenging you to leave it to fate ...without telling you it was double-headed. As you know, I was still a bit miff with you for not letting me into this big secret thing. But you surprised me when you agreed to take the challenge and told me you'd leave it to Claire to toss it. You really believe in all that destiny nonsense, don't you?" He shook his head in disbelief.
Jamie just shrugged and smiled.
"Uncle Lamb! How could you?" Claire huffed indignantly, crossing her arms across her chest. "For your information, we didn't toss the coin even if Jamie suggested it."
Quentin's eyes widened. "You didn't?"
"I don't need a damn coin to make my decisions, for God's sake."
Jamie slipped his arm across her shoulder and squeezed her. "It doesnae matter, Sassenach. All that matters is he gave us his blessings and that we love each other."
"I know," Claire whispered before glaring at her uncle. "As for you, no more tricks up your sleeves, are we clear?"
"Jamie caught me off guard with this marriage thing. Can you blame me for what I did?"
"Uncle Lamb! That's not the issue here." She pegged him down with a look. "You've been giving Jamie a hard time from day one. No more tricks and no more taunting Jamie. I love you both, and I want you to get along. Promise me."
Quentin raised his hands in the air before placing them on his chest. "Promise. Jamie's read me the riot act earlier today, and you're speaking to the converted. And I meant what I said when I told him I couldn't think of a better man for you. Honestly, I'm happy for both of you." He opened his arms to her. "Forgive me, sweetheart?"
With a roll of her eye, she stepped away from Jamie's hold and threw herself in her uncle's arms. "You know I'll always forgive you," she mumbled against his neck, hugging him close. "Despite you being such a grouch, I want you to know I am happy that you're here."
"Me too, sweetheart, me too," he said gruffly. "Now, shall we start the celebration? I'm parched and starving."
"About time," Annalise chirped with a little dance and fist pump.
Laughing, Willie popped the cork on a bottle of Moët while Jamie handed out the crystal flutes.
Claire watched as their drinks were being poured and smiled. She said a silent prayer for her parents and thanked them. There were so many things to be grateful for. Life was good, and her heart was full. She was moving to the Highlands, start her career as a writer and marry the man she loved. This was what she wanted, and she was prepared for this whatever may come their way. Her only wish was, her parents could be here today, so her father could see what a fine lad Jamie had grown up to be.
Her attention was brought back to the present when Annalise nudged her with her foot. With champagne finally in everyone's hand, they all raised their glasses to their new beginning.
"To Jamie and Claire," Willie began.
"To your happiness," Annalise added.
"To family and friends," Jamie beamed.
"To what's next," Claire breathed.
"To my next meal," Quentin snorted. "Now drink up, and let's go. I'm bloody starving."
..........
"Did you really mean what you said earlier?" Jamie asked Quentin once they were alone, and the rest of the party walked ahead of them on their way back to the cottage from the pub. "About believing in me and being happy for us?"
Quentin glanced at him. "I always say what I mean, son. Best get used to it," he grumbled.
"Right ..." They walked in silence, watching Claire, Annalise and Willie as they began singing the chorus of Living on a Prayer for the umpteenth time. "About that double-headed one pound coin ..." Jamie began.
"That was a clever touch, huh?" Quentin grinned. "Would have come handy for you if Claire had decided to use it. You still got it?"
"Aye." Jamie handed him the coin. "By the way, I have a confession to make."
"What's that?" Quentin asked, taking the coin and shoving it in his pocket.
"The reason why I readily agreed to that coin toss you suggested earlier is that ...Harry gave me one too." Jamie dug his own coin from his pocket and showed it to Quentin. "I knew the coin ye were giving me was double-headed."
Quentin stopped to look at him. "You suggested the coin toss to Claire even though you knew it was double-headed?"
"Aye."
"If Claire had agreed, would you have used the double-headed or the normal coin?"
"The double-headed, of course," Jamie admitted.
"What about all your bloody talk of fate and destiny and all that?"
Jamie shrugged. "Oh, I still believe in fate, but I couldnae take the chance. I love yer niece too much. I think ye would be inclined to agree that the universe has an odd sense of humour, and I needed to cover my arse just in case it decided to turn against me."
Quentin scowled. "Is it too late to change my mind about you?"
"Aye."
They watched as Annalise and Willie, doubled with laughter, latched on to Claire's arms after she stumbled onto the curb.
"Well, then," Quentin grunted. "What the hell are you doing here still babbling to me? Go join the fun."
Jamie shook his head. "Oh no, ye don't, spoilsport. Ye're here to have some fun too. Ye're joining in."
"I'm too old for all that. Now go and leave me in peace."
Jamie narrowed his gaze at him. "Is that really what ye want? To be left in peace?"
Quentin blew out an exasperated breath, but Jamie caught the sheen in his eyes and the smile he was battling. "No. I want you to get used to me showing up," he growled.
Jamie pretended to sound annoyed so as not to embarrass the older man. "Fine, as long as it doesn't involve ye decking me."
"Deal."
..........
Jamie looked up from the mock children's book, smiling when he heard Claire doing her nightly routine in the bathroom. The book disguising his marriage proposal had been Annalise idea. As soon as she'd heard of his intention from Willie, she'd made the suggestion, desperately wanting to play a part in surprising Claire. She even had him adding a few of his own words to the poem. How Annalise's friend managed to illustrate and have the book printed on such short notice, he had no idea. But he must admit, The Unicorn and the Lioness book had been a nice touch.
Claire walked into the bedroom, looking fresh in his t-shirt, her face still flushed from the champagne earlier. He watched her shiver a little, rubbing her arms to generate heat. The sight of her bare legs kicked his heart rate up a notch. He smiled and drew the bedcover back in an invitation to get in.
As she snuggled under the crook of his arm, she smiled when she saw the book on his lap. "I never got to read the ending," she said with a yawn, her arm sliding across his waist.
He kissed the crown of her head and pulled her in closer. "Shall I read it for ye?"
"Yes, please."
"I'll start from where you left off."
"Alright."
Jamie got comfortable and cleared his throat. "Here goes ..."
 So he got on one knee
To hand her a gift
A tiny velvet box
Holding a silver piece
 Claire giggled. "You got me right there."
"I know," Jamie chuckled, turning the page. "Now wheesht and let me finish."
 Confused and bewildered
That it's not a ring
It became apparent
She wanted the real thing
  So still on his one knee
He uttered the plea:
"My dearest lioness,
Will you marry me?"
  He felt his heart beating
Right out of his chest.
He could do nothing but wait
And hope she'd say YES.
 When he ended and a few moments of silence ensued, Claire twisted from her position and looked up at him. "That's it?"
"Aye," Jamie replied, handing her the book. "Louise said you're a writer, so she left a blank page for you to write the ending."
"Is that so?" she said, laughing, reaching for her specs. "Well, let's see what I can do."
Jamie grabbed a pen from the nightstand and handed it to her.
After adjusting the pillow, she sat up and began scribbling, reading the words out loud as she wrote.
 When she finally answered
He could not stop grinning
Because he knew, in his heart,
This was just The Beginning!
 Claire closed the book and took off her specs. "How was that?" she asked, sliding back under the covers.
"It was good, but I'm left hanging. I'm dying to know what happened after?"
"Hmmm ..." She climbed on top of him and nipped his lips with her teeth. "They celebrated with their loved ones, ate a lot of food and drank too much champagne." She drew circles on his chest. "Although I have a sneaking suspicion, their night is not over yet."
Jamie flipped her on her back, making her yelp. He scanned her face for a few heartbeats. "Ye're absolutely right. He's gonnae tell her how happy she's made him," he whispered, his words thick with emotions. "And show her in so many ways how much he loves her."
She blinked away the tears blearing her vision and smiled up. "Well, he's got all night to prove he's not just a bunch of talk."
He arched an eyebrow at her. "A bunch of talk, huh? He's a big man, Sassenach, and he makes love twice as long."
She slipped her hand past the waistband of his boxer brief and gripped him hard, making him catch his breath. "We'll see about that," she challenged.
He rewarded her by grabbing her hand and slowly pressing his hips into her. "You're on, Sassenach, you're on," he groaned into her mouth before silencing her with his kisses.
Tumblr media
Dear Readers,
Firstly, apologies for the delay in the final chapter of this series. As some of you already know, if you read my Tumblr posts, I've had a bad reaction to my vaccination. Though I feel a little better, I don't feel quite right yet hence the delay of this update. I'm easily tired and have been writing sporadically, depending on my energy level. So, after this chapter, I will take a long rest before starting the next series.
Secondly, I'd like to thank everyone for the kudos and comments on AO3 and on my Tumblr and those who left best wishes in my inbox. I appreciate them all from the bottom of my heart. Though I haven't replied individually, please know I enjoy reading them and look forward to what you have to say.
Thirdly, as you may have gathered, this is the final chapter of this series. There will be a third series. When? I have no time frame yet as I will need time to recuperate. If you wish to be updated, you can always subscribe to the WONDERWALL series by clicking here. Or follow me on my Tumblr site here.
Lastly, I hope you've enjoyed this last chapter. It's the longest chapter I've ever written, with 11560 words. If this update is all over the place, I blame it on my bad days. I personally think it's alright, but I can never be sure. I believe my reaction to the vaccination has dulled me a bit. So, thank you all from the bottom of my heart: for your continued interest, readership, kudos and comments. I look forward to reading your remarks and constructive criticism on this latest update. Kudos to you all, my friends, and be safe. Keep the positive vibe rolling. Much love. X
 PS I will compile a Masterlist for WONDERWALL and post it on my Tumblr site, either tomorrow or in the next few days, depending on how I feel.
top 5 least favorite eah characters because i want to see shit go down
oh god. when called to speak the truth, i have no choice.
1. rosabella. lets rip this band-aid off first and fast. i am so sure that im wrong, that i've got something mismatched in my head and there's actually a really good reason people like her, but i have never seen rosabellas appeal as a character. i've watched epic winter three times now, including once when i was taking meticulous notes the entire time, and i have found that not only is rosabella a ridiculously flat character, she's also deadass a bitch. i can quote multiple lines because i wrote them down where rosabella says something that's just completely out of pocket for no reason. there's one i can even write down now because it's burned into my mind forever just from how hard it clobbered me over the fucking head, where the gang is hiking up the mountain and rosabellas skis break or something and daring goes "oh i could carry you" and rosabella FUCKING responds like "daring, are you finally thinking about something other than yourself?" which is just ridiculously out of order in my eyes. who fucking says that. what the fuck. there are a million other things i cant stand about rosabella but that about sums it up for now i don't want to prolong this dskjfgljdfg
2. brooke. i genuinely feel so bad about this. brooke page is the coolest concept with the worst possible execution. she is the random fucking twelve year old your friend is babysitting who won't stop poking you and asking if you have games on your phone except she's also a god who will destroy the universe to make you give her your phone and then not think a fucking thing of it when everyone is picking up the pieces after her. she's annoying, her voice is annoying, her stupid fucking footnotes in the shadow high book were annoying. i would kick a child. i would.
3. blondie. i think blondie's pretty entertaining and a useful character, but as a person she repulses and terrifies me. she produced propaganda. i mention this to every single person i interact with but that's because i literally cant get over it. the webisode is called blondie's just right and the entire time it's just her conducting hoaxes to make the school and headmaster grimm look good and then it's never addressed again. it's just something she does. she also breaks into random houses and has absolutely no handle on the ethics of journalism. blondie is a classist social parasite bootlicker and i can't stand the bitch
4. bunny. I'M SO SORRY I KNOW WHAT I SAID IN MY WONDERLANDIAN TOP 5 BUT THIS IS PERSONAL. it dates back to year 10 chemistry where my friend and i would pick an eah character and slag them off to amuse ourselves, and bunny became the staple of this game because lets be honest her canon character is so easy to kick at. we villainised her so much it was fucking ridiculous but so funny, i remember we made up this intricate theory with spider diagrams about how bunny was the root of every single bad thing that happens in the show. it was all jokes but that's how deep this went. im currently trying to unlearn my bunny hate but its so deep rooted its going to take a while. sorry bunny, you did nothing wrong but i still hate you for no reason
5. crystal. theres really no one else in eah i have massively negative feelings about, and i think a character as blank as crystal winter being on this list proves that. i actually dont hate her - rewatching epic winter i realised she did actually have a character arc and learn stuff which is sometimes a thing that characters just bypass in eah so i was pleased. however her entire arc culminated in learning how to tie her stupid little hockey shoes without the assistance of her child servants so minus points for that. also she's just super fucking annoying, i feel comfortable saying that because who the hell likes crystal enough to defend her
im really sorry for all the other salt though, i promise i'm just irrational and a bitch so if you think i'm wrong about your favourite character, yes i am. they're the best, don't listen to me
i really wish i hated you || tsukishima kei
masterlist | 1 | chapter 2  | 3
Tumblr media
pairing: tsukishima kei x f! reader
sypnosis: It was an accident that (Y/N) met a certain tall, blonde male; a memory she isn't fond of remembering, but it is where it all started. And ever since, she magically makes her to his path. The image of the bespectacled man dwelled in her mind more than she thought. Tsukishima pushed away his softer emotions and denied their existence, or at least that's what he told himself. But then, he couldn't believe that this girl he labeled as a clumsy, unlucky creature who smashed his glasses is slowly bringing these strange emotions back to him. She might be irritating and dumb sometimes, but he couldn't get himself to completely hate her. Either that destiny was stupid, or he was blessed or cursed.
genre: fanfiction, fluff
wc: 1881
Tumblr media
(Y/N) stopped her tracks upon hearing his voice and turned around to confirm, but it was true, much to her dismay. He held his black-rimmed glasses with its left lens and frame cracked. The girl's mind went blank. She hesitantly glanced at him a few times, hoping that he would forgive her or let the incident smoothly slide.
He hissed, "Don't think you can get away with this, miss."
She sighed in defeat. The kids approached her with worried looks. She patted her heads, accepting their sympathy. "Well, playtime's over."
"But we haven't finished the game!"
"Do you still want to play?"
"Yes!"
"Next time, when you see me again at the park. Onee-chan has to go now."
She bade goodbye to the children and walked towards the guy she hit with his friend. She looked at his broken glasses again and couldn't help but to let out an exhale with anxiety. This is the result of my stupidity...
"W-What do you want me to do?" (Y/N) slurred.
" I don't know, maybe you should fix it right here and right now." The blonde guy crossed his arms and frowned.
Why don't you just get to the point?
"Replace it."
Of course, she will have to replace it. What a question to ask. She mentally rolled her eyes.
"I'll check there out if there's an optical store, I guess you will have to keep an eye on me so that I won't escape?" She pointed to the nearby mall, walking distance from the park.
"What else? Nobody trusts a stranger."
They reached the town's mall and saw an open optical store, but (Y/N) remembered her wallet. She wasn't sure if there's enough money for her to buy glasses.
"On the second thought, can I buy the glasses tomorrow? I don't think I have enough money."
"No." He instantly replied.
"Tsukki," His green-haired companion interrupted, "Maybe we can give her a chance? What if she's telling the truth?"
"I need my glasses in my everyday life, and if she doesn't have the money, I'll be happy to spare her some, but she'll have no choice to be in my debt."
How merciless. It's not like (Y/N) could blame him, but if the same thing happened to her, she would treat them nicely. She looked around the store to find a pair of glasses exactly like his, as he demanded, with his friend helping her for 30 minutes. After she gets the correct measurements and eye grade, she emptied her wallet to pay for the damn thing,
"Here." She held out the new glasses in the case. "Take care of them, it costed my LAST savings."
He took them and wore them immediately, "I am taking care of my glasses, it's just someone 'accidentally' kicked a ball on my way and knocked them off. Thank you for the horrible experience."
He excused himself and walked away. His friend stayed to talk to her.
"I'm sorry for the way he acted, he's like this most of the times. Please understand," He bowed, shyness evident in his voice.
"It's okay, it was completely my fault, so I don't mind."
"It was an accident, though. Thank you for your generosity." He soon followed the blondie that headed first.
"That was mandatory, though." (Y/N) lightly chuckled to herself.
She got out of the mall to take in the fresh air, but her soul almost left her body when a bolt of lightning strikes a tree near her, setting it on fire.
"Oh, my fucking- Did the sky just attempted to finish me?!" She said, calming herself down and looking up. The clouds were much darker than earlier.
As the townspeople bombed the burning tree with water, she ran to her apartment before it rains. There, she dropped her things on the couch and flopped to her bed, thinking what happened on this day because of her own stupidity. She groaned when she held her now empty wallet.
"Argh! Why am I so unlucky?!"She threw her wallet in frustration.
"That tall, blonde, asshole! He didn't need to embarrass me in front of people! I didn't mean it! He could've waited for tomorrow for me to replace his glasses! He's so unforgiving!" She complained, hating the thought of the said guy.
She sighed, cringe, anger, and embarrassment filling her head as she hugged her pillow.
"May karma comes to him sometime," was her last words before drifting off to a nap.
A few days passed, she went out of the house again to buy food supplies in a convenience store. It was almost nighttime. The chilly wind blew to her face and the sweet scent wafted in the store. She picked up some junk food and meat first before stopping by the confectioneries section. While choosing what shortcake flavor to pick, she bumped into something that almost made her fall to the floor, if she hadn't retained her balance.
"Oof, I'm sorry..."
Or rather, it was a person she bumped into.
She looked up and recognized the face of the man. It was the guy she's kind of mad at, but this time, he didn't have his nice friend with him.
(Y/N) took a step back, "You!"
The male looked back at her, tilting his head, observing the girl. He spoke with a monotonous expression, "Do I know you?"
Her eye twitched in irritation, "He doesn't remember me?!"
"I was the girl in the playground three days ago! I... I replaced your glasses!" She said, hesitating on the next sentence.
"Oh." His eyebrows raised, "Did the midget learned her lesson not to play a sport she's bad at?" He mocked.
"I'm not even a soccer player to begin with! What are you doing here?"
"What? Am I not allowed to buy food in a convenience store like a normal person?"
"I've been buying stuff here and I've never seen a similar face I've met twice in a week or month. That's sus."
"Maybe you are following me."
"What do I gain by following a huge, mean person like you?" (Y/N) retorted.
"Perhaps you want to get back at me after what happened days ago even if it's your fault. I don't know. Ask yourself." He took his eyes off her to choose among the sweet desserts.
She paused, analyzing his comment, "Well, you aren't completely wrong..."
"So, I am being followed? What a stalker."
"Of course not! What you said might be possible, but it's not the case right now!"
Both of them have set their eyes on an item and surprisingly the same one. A strawberry shortcake in the middle of the section. Their hands both grabbed the object before staring at each other in annoyance.
"Let go." They chorused.
"I chose it first." Said (Y/N).
"I do not see your name in it. You let go." He replied.
"How about no?"
They glared at each other for a few minutes before (Y/N)'s brows creased deeper in the middle, knowing well that this guy won't back down. "Whatever, you take it. I don't care anymore."
"Wow, thanks." He subtly rolled his eyes then walked away.
It was very awkward in the cashier where she had to wait behind him. Damn, he's so tall. Does he play any sport? Is he human? Or probably just a walking, mean tree?
What happened in the park flashed in (Y N)'s mind again. The impact of the ball might have been so painful to him since he wears glasses, where it cracked. What if the shards got into his eyes? Her wallet isn't ready for more payments, but that isn't the issue right now. She was worried about his well being. Both of them got out of the convenience store and she called the blonde male before he could get away again.
"Uhh, hey!"
He looked over his shoulder a little, "What?"
"Are your eyes okay? I mean, your glasses cracked... shards could've got inside your eyes..."
"Yes, they're fine, fortunately."
(Y/N) let out a sigh of relief. "That's... good to hear."
"But if something happened to my eyes, I will not hesitate to find you and make you pay for an eye surgery."
"You're exaggerating."
"It's not impossible. Now, go home. Elementary school students shouldn't go past the curfew."
She frowned. If only he wasn't a stranger, she would've kicked his ass to hell.
"Oh, gladly. I wouldn't want to stay near a bootleg Eiffel Tower any longer. Have a good day for you."
The blonde male left without any more words. (Y/N) sighed again in mental exhaustion, having to finish a lot of things this night. She was walking straight to her home while thinking of ideas to put in her current project when she realized that he was still walking ahead in front of her.
Where is he going?
She made her footsteps lighter, not wanting him to think that she was following him. She was thinking where does this guy live or why is he walking the same route as she does. It's not wrong to know where does this asshole stay, right? This continued for a couple of minutes before he turned around.
"Will you stop following me?"
Her eyes widened, not expecting him to know that she was behind him, "Excuse me? I'm just walking to my place?"
"Really?" He narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
(Y/N) looked around to find a way to escape. There, she saw her house that she almost missed because her mind was occupied, "Oh, look. It's my house. I gotta go!"
She waved goodbye to the blonde stranger, ran to her apartment, and slammed the door, dying from the awkwardness. She proceeded to the kitchen to drop the food supplies and to cook for herself as well. The salt in the cupboard reminded her of the rude, four eyes that she just met again minutes ago. That's when she realized, she kept calling him either insults or his evident physical features when he probably has a name. She could've asked for his name earlier, but shrugged the idea off, thinking that he will never give her his name.
The common thing to do after graduating junior high is to find a decent high school. (Y/N) is scheduled to have her entrance exams next week, so she has to spend time reviewing her notes these days. She opted to go to the prefectural library the next day to get further references as she isn't satisfied with the books she has. It was Wednesday, thus it was full of people who are also preparing for their entrance exams. With her stature, it'll be easy to pass in this crowd of people but she will have to ask for help because she can't reach the books at the top of the shelves.
After wandering around the crowded library, she found an unoccupied table to quietly study. She made her way to it, carrying the heavy books she needed that was luckily located at the bottom shelves. As she set the books on the left side of the table, someone did the same on the opposite side. She looked up to see who the stranger is, only to find out that the person isn't a stranger to her anymore.
"Oh, the midget stalker is here."
Book One: Gold (Prompto x Reader) Chapter III
Back at the chocobo outpost, (Y/n) waited patiently for the boys to finish talking with Wiz. She wandered over to the pens and immediately made eye contact with one of the birds. It had (f/c) feathers. It watched her every moment as she approached. A faint 'chirp' came from the chocobo as it wiggled its tail feathers excitedly.
The guardian smiled sweetly, reaching out to pet the bird. It lowered its head and allowed her to place her hand on its head. It closed its eyes, enjoying the feeling of her fingers stroke the top of its head.
(Y/n)'s hand gravitated toward the chocobo's neck, resulting in the bird to come closer. Its body bounced against the wooden railings of the pen, but that didn't stop it from snuggling into her embrace. With a giggle, the girl wrapped both arms around the chocobo's neck as it placed its head on her shoulder. It chirped lightly before nuzzling its beak into her (h/c) locks.
What surprised (Y/n) the most was the bird's lack of fear. Most animals were able to detect her aura and became frightened, but this chocobo seemed to find joy and comfort in her presence. A giggle fell from her lips at how affectionate the bird was. "You're really friendly, aren't you?"
The sound of a camera shutter grabbed her attention. Pulling away from the chocobo, she looked toward the sound and saw Prompto. A grin manifested on her face when she saw his cheeks turn slightly red from being caught. "Sneaking more pictures, huh?"
The boy lowered his camera, scuffing the tip of his shoe against the ground. "Wh-What can I say? A photographer never misses a perfect opportunity to take a picture."
(Y/n) then noticed he was alone. "Where're the others?"
"They're still talkin' with Wiz," he said, walking towards her. As he stood by her and waited for the others, he reached out and petted the chocobo. "So...exactly how're we supposed to explain this to them?"
"Leave it to me," she said. "This'll be easier than I thought it'd be."
"Why's that?"
"By Ignis' reaction earlier, it seems he already has a comprehension of what I am. With his assistance, I'm positive Noctis and Gladiolus will be able to understand." She lifted her left hand, clamping it over the gemstone located on her right arm.
A few minutes ticked by before Noctis, Gladio, and Ignis regrouped with (Y/n) and Prompto. The young girl directed them to a place on the chocobo ranch that was void of prying eyes before giving them her full attention and introducing herself. "My name is (Y/n). It's a pleasure to finally meet you all."
"So, uh..." Noctis rubbed the back of his neck. "Thanks for the, y'know...help earlier."
She smiled gently at him. "No need to thank me. After all," she turned her gaze to the marksman. "It is my job to protect Prompto."
"If I'm not mistaken, you are a guardian, correct?" Ignis asked.
She nodded. "Indeed, I am. You knew the moment you spotted the gemstone what I was. I'm impressed by your analytical abilities, Ignis."
"Hold on," Gladio interrupted. "Guardians are from fairytales. There's no way they really exist."
"Far from it, Gladio," the advisor replied. "Guardians are no mere figment of one's imagination. You stand in the presence of one. (Y/n) demonstrated her abilities during our skirmish with the behemoth. There are a multitude of texts explaining the existence of spirits, or as we commonly refer to them as guardians."
The shield still wasn't convinced the fairytale story he was told when he was little wasn't fiction. "If you really are a guardian, how the hell do you know blondie?"
The golden-eyed girl glanced at Prompto for a brief second before looking back at the brute and explaining who and what spirits truly were. "I'm not sure what to say about the guardians you are referring to in fairytales, but a real life spirit is born from a fragment of one's soul. Not all humans are capable of manifesting a guardian. In fact, it is quite rare. A strong emotional tie to the world around you is necessary to birth a spirit. Just so happens, Prompto is one of those people who does has a strong connection."
It took a few minutes of silence after (Y/n)'s explanation for Noctis and Gladio to fully understand her words. Ignis, on the other hand, took no time at all for him to wrap his head around the truth behind guardians. While he needed no other evidence of the truth due to seeing all the proof he needed, Noctis and Gladio were still unable to swallow everything. Of course, the two displayed their uncertainty and (Y/n) was more than understanding.
After (Y/n) answered any and all questions they had, Prompto placed his hands together and begged. "Can (Y/n) come with us, please?"
"What're you talkin' about?" Noctis asked. "Hasn't she already been with us?"
"Well, yeah, but I mean can she travel with us outside the bracelet?" He clarified. "She could help us in battles! I mean, you guys saw how awesome she was earlier, right?"
"I don't see why not." The prince glanced at his shield and advisor. "What do you guys say?"
"A guardian would prove beneficial in battle," Ignis stated.
Gladio shrugged his shoulders. "Fine with me. She's already proved herself by taking Deadeye down."
Prompto pumped his fist into the air with a triumphant cry. "Yes!"
"Now we know why you've been demanding seconds at dinner," Ignis commented.
The blonde lowered his hand. "Oh, y-yeah. It was the only way I could think of getting something to eat for (Y/n) while we were camping."
"Now we don't have to worry about that," the spirit said. She then clapped her hands together, grabbing the boys' attentions. "So, where to next?"
"Lestallum," Gladio answered. "Gotta check on my sister."
"Well then, shall we?"
"Aw, yeah! Let's go!" Prompto cheered.
<-----------<<<<<
When the group reached Lestallum, (Y/n) materialized from Prompto's bracelet and excused herself from the group as they headed to the Leville to speak with Iris. She wandered over to the outlook and stared into the distance at the Disc of Cauthess before her eyes drifted upward to the sky. Her attention was drawn to the sound of footsteps approaching from behind.
Turning her head, she spotted a man with spiky black hair and piercing jade eyes. He wore a faded green jacket and a black t-shirt with matching combat pants and boots. The small jingling she heard as he walked was due to the dog tags he had hanging around his neck. By his attire, (Y/n) assumed he was a hunter. But what she didn't understand was why he was walking directly towards her. She wondered if he was just coming to take in the view instead of talking to her, but she was proven wrong when her golden eyes locked with his emerald ones and a smirk appeared on his face.
Sighing, the spirit turned her gaze back to the sky in an attempt to ignore the man. She prayed to the Astrals he would be able to tell how uninterested she was and simply walk away. Morosely, her prayer went unanswered as the stranger stood directly beside her and followed her line of sight. "Beautiful day, don't you agree?" He asked.
(Y/n)'s shoulders drooped as she sighed. Her eyes reverted back to gazing at the Disc. "You want something. That much is clear. Skip the sweet talk and get straight to the point. What do you want?"
The man chuckled at her snappy response. "A man can't talk to a beautiful woman without having a motive?"
"They can, but you're not one of those men. You clearly want something. What is it?"
He sighed, removing his hands from his pockets and sticking them up into the air. "You caught me red-handed. I was gonna ask if you could accompany me to the market and then I'd be able to convince you to join me for dinner."
(Y/n)'s eyes narrowed as she crossed her arms. "Of all the beautiful women walking around Lestallum, you chose me. You've horrible taste."
"Does that mean-?"
"No," she promptly interrupted him. "I wish you luck on your hunt for someone who will fall at your feet and follow you around like a lost puppy dog."
The man placed a hand over his chest and feigned a painful expression. "Ouch... You wound me, my lady. I'll need a potion to help heal my shattered heart."
(Y/n) uncrossed her arms and placed one of her hands on her hip. Turning her head, she glared at the stranger. "You really can't tell when you're not wanted, can you?"
He snickered and reached out to touch the guardian's arm. "Hey, listen, I'm-"
All of a sudden, the girl heard someone shout her name and felt an arm wrap around her waist. A faint gasp of shock fell from her lips as she was pulled into someone's side. Without having to look, she knew exactly who it was. "Prompto. When did you...?"
Prompto pressed his cheek against the side of the girl's head, his cheeks dusted with a light pink as he smiled widely. "Sorry I'm late, babe. Did I keep you waiting long?"
"B-Babe...?" The (h/c)-haired guardian murmured to herself, clearly confused as to why he used an affectionate nickname. After a few seconds, the pieces assembled in her head and her eyes widened. "O-Oh, not at all!" She wrapped both of her arms around his torso and hugged him tightly.
The man, who still had yet to properly introduce himself, glanced between the two. "Ah, I see. My apologies. I had no idea you were already spoken for." He smiled at the girl, which caused her to tense up slightly from the strange aura she detected from him. "I do hope we meet again, (Y/n). I would enjoy a proper conversation with you. You are a mystery I'd love to solve." He turned on his heels, waving over his shoulder as he strode off.
Once the nameless man was gone, Prompto loosened his arm around the girl's waist but kept his arm wound around it. "Who was that guy?"
"No idea," (Y/n) answered honestly. "He never told me his name. I'm glad you showed up when you did, Prom. He was starting to give me the creeps."
"You looked like you were about to toss him over the side of the outlook," the blonde chortled.
"You've no idea how close I was to turning him into a chew toy. By the way..." She kept her arms secured around his torso as she peered up at his face. "How'd it go at the Leville?"
"Good. We'll be spending the night here."
"Does this mean I'll get to sleep in an actual bed?" She asked, hope gleaming her golden-slitted eyes.
"You know it!" He smiled.
She smiled back, unwinding her arms from around his waist. When she tried to step away, Prompto's arm didn't budge. "Um, Prom? Could you let me go?"
"What?" He looked down and realized he was still latched on to her. "I-I, uh..." He quickly removed his arm and stepped away from her, flustered. "S-Sorry 'bout that, (Y/n)..."
"Don't apologize," she giggled. "I quite enjoyed it." She saw his cheeks turn an even brighter red all because of her. She knew exactly what to say and do to fluster the boy.
Just then, Noctis, Gladio, and Ignis wandered over. (Y/n) looked at the three, noticing the prince was staring at her. She tilted her head in confusion. "Everything all right, Your Highness?"
That was when Noctis realized he was staring at the spirit. "Uh, no, just...kinda freaked out by the eyes."
"Noct!" Prompto whined.
The (h/c)-haired girl snorted with laughter. "It's okay, Prom. I'm not offended." She offered them a smile. "Pushing that aside, did you three need something?"
"We were hoping you both would join us for dinner," Ignis said.
She blinked in surprise. "Me too?"
"What's with the look?" Noctis asked. "You think we would just leave you out?"
"Maybe just a little," she laughed nervously. "After all, I am a stranger to you. Shouldn't you three be more weary?"
"Nonsense, (Y/n)," Ignis replied. "Your origin and dedication to Prompto are proof enough to earn our trust."
Her eyes widened. She was expecting it would be more difficult to earn their trust. She then smiled happily. "Then let's get something to eat."
The group headed back to the main thoroughfare and made their way to Surgate's Beanmine. They sat down at one of the tables and ordered their meals. While waiting, Noctis was once again staring at the (h/c)-haired girl. Prompto was the first to notice and groaned, "Dude, you're staring..."
The prince blinked a few times before apologizing to (Y/n). "Sorry, it's just...I'm trying to figure something out."
"And what's that?" The marksman asked.
"How come I never saw (Y/n) when I came over to your apartment?"
The spirit laughed at the question. "You never checked the closet. That's where Prompto stuffed me whenever any of you came over."
Ignis sighed, shaking his head in disapproval. "What an awful way to treat a lady, Prompto."
"I-I know! I just...wasn't comfortable introducing (Y/n) to you guys," the sharpshooter explained.
"But still. The closet...?" Noctis muttered.
Gladio casted a smirk in Prompto's direction. "Why? You think one of us would've stolen her from you, blondie?"
Prompto hung his head. "Guess so..."
The shield was taken aback at his honesty. "Well, damn. Wasn't expecting that response."
(Y/n) saw how uncomfortable Prompto was and changed the subject. "So, what's your plan from here?" She looked around at the four faces around the table.
"Find the royal arms," Noctis said. "And something called the conduit."
"Conduit?" The girl muttered.
"Cor didn't really explain," he answered.
"I see..."
Just then, their meals arrived. Everyone ate in silence, enjoying the delicious food. Once they finished eating, they sat at the table a little longer. Noctis, Gladio, and Ignis were still curious about (Y/n) and asked her some questions about herself. She, of course, was more than happy to share a few things about her. In exchange, she learned a little about them.
As she chatted with the three, Prompto felt relieved and happy to see how well they all were getting along. He slumped back in his seat, listening to them converse.
After their chat ended, the group headed back to the Leville. They went to their room. The four boys gathered around the coffee table and pulled out a deck of cards. (Y/n) wandered across the room towards the open balcony door. She strolled outside, the cool air whipping through her (h/c) locks.
Casting her golden gaze to the sky, she watched as the sun set and gleaming stars filled the sky. Her eyes trailed across a certain cluster of stars-the Celestial Crescent. Ever since leaving Insomnia, she felt a strange presence from the cluster of stars and thought she heard someone trying to speak to her whenever she gazed upon them.
"(Y/n)?"
The guardian tore her gaze away from the sky and smiled as Prompto joined her on the balcony. "Hey, Prom. I thought you were playing cards with the others."
"You do realize you've been out here for a couple of hours, right?"
She blinked in surprise. "I...did not realize."
"Y'know, you look up at the sky more often than when we were in the city," he said. "It's almost like you're in some kinda trance."
(Y/n) leaned against the railing and looked back up at the night sky. "There's this cluster of stars only spirits can see. It's known as the Celestial Crescent. As the name states, it's a collection of stars shaped like a crescent."
Prompto looked up at the stars. "Is it pretty?"
"There're so many colors," she sighed contently. "I wish you could see it too."
Suddenly, Gladio poked his head out of the room and eyed the two. "Hey, you two comin' inside or staying out here all night?"
Prompto and (Y/n) went back inside. The blonde flopped down on the bed while the girl remained standing. She didn't know what to do with herself when seeing the other bed was occupied by Noctis and Ignis.
The shield noticed and placed a hand on her shoulder. "You take the bed with blondie. I'll sleep on the couch."
"I couldn't do that," she retorted. "You take the bed. I'll return to the bracelet."
"Prompto already told us how stuffy and uncomfortable it is inside that gemstone of yours." He nudged her towards the bed. "A soft mattress sounds better than that bracelet. Besides, I can handle the couch."
"Well then, um... Thank you, Gladio." She climbed on to the bed, curling up into a ball. She stared at Prompto's back for a few minutes until he flipped over.
The blonde gasped when his cerulean eyes met gold-slitted ones. Realizing his face was a few inches from (Y/n)'s, he stumbled over his words as he tried to apologize. He scooted back to put some distance between them, but wound up falling off the bed with a shriek.
The girl crawled over to the edge of the bed and peered down at him. His arms and legs were sprawled out across the floor. "You okay, Prom?"
He nodded with a faint blush. "I-I'm okay..."
"If sleeping next to me makes you uncomfortable, I can-"
"No!" Prompto shot up and immediately crawled back onto the bed. "I-I'm not uncomfortable. I was just surprised to see you there instead of the big guy."
"So that means I can stay here, right?"
He nodded. "Yeah. Sorry for freaking out..."
"It's fine." (Y/n) laid back down on her side of the bed, making herself comfortable. "Good night, Prom."
Prompto laid down with his back facing the girl, cheeks still tinted a bright red. "'Night, (Y/n)."
ever after high as a musical !
this is gonna probably be a bad idea, but i'm still going to roll with it.
hello hello there, so i'm a big theatre kid (i usually just say theatre kid even though i didn't really take part in musicals yet, since my school has weird plays and whatnot- sigh, but i'm still a big theatre fan) and i also like ever after high, so you know what that meanssss? crossover time!! so this is basically me just *squeezing* in songs from musicals that could fit into some events (some events are just created by me, for that extra drama). time to get started!!
defying gravity - wicked
i already explained this on my raven ask post, i will try to link it if i can, but if you don't want to find it, basically raven is 'defying gravity' (which i think is a metaphor for breaking the norm?) by not signing the book and not pledging to her destiny
popular - wicked
okay, so apple as g(a)linda and raven as elphaba. like when apple and raven found out they're roommates (mostly raven though), apple *kinda* teaches raven how to be EVIL and also popular, because i don't have the heart to remove the original point of the song
disappear - dear evan hansen
this one has two meanings for me.
one, this is basically apple's rebuttal to raven's 'not signing' thingamagingy. she's using the fact that everyone will disappear and that no one deserves that as a manipulation trick thing. i guess most people with their royal statuses would believe her and root for her side, though some people will doubt it.
two, this is raven's moment to start the
REVOLUTION
and get people who want to write their own destinies on her side. the first part of the song kinda states how they're the underdogs and how royal destinies get so much hype just because they're, you know, royalty. the song could *possibly* symbolize the fact that it was their time to rise up and speak against the signing the book shenanigans.
sincerely, me - dear evan hansen
remember the iconic true hearts day trio, hopper, briar, and cupid? they're basically this song. i made a post about them last time, and i stated there that briar would be jared, cupid would be connor, and hopper would be evan. i imagine them being asked by headmaster grimm to let him see how the play was going. andddd they performed this song as a cover-up.
non-stop - hamilton
okay i will try to explain my thought process on this
so, apple and raven are working hard to convince the other that they're wrong, so they could change their opinions
AND NOW, THE STANDOUT PART OF NON-STOP! THE END OF IT
here's my take: -Hamilton: Apple ("how lucky we are to be alive right now" could be a reference to how she argued with Raven with how they didn't disappear, to which she said 'yet') -Angelica: mostly all the Royals ("you will never be satisfied" could be something that could be used against Raven with her destiny and stuff) -Eliza: Raven ("isn't this enough" could be something relating to all of her compromises with Apple about her destiny and having a replacement villain) -Washington: Headmaster Grimm (this might be a bit of a stretch, but the "history has its eyes on you" part could be something like the future generations hating raven since she didn't play her part and now her story went poof or something) -Burr: mostly all the Rebels ("why do you assume you're the smartest in the room" could be aimed at apple just because she says everything like it's going to happen and she acts like a know-it-all (but only in this song)) -Ensemble: everyone else (the ensemble is just enjoying the drama and stuff)
hurricane - hamilton
i'd say that apple would sing this when she finally snaps and 'demands' her destiny and attention. the song is about hamilton's struggles and how he persisted through everything, and i could see apple singing about that.
world burn - mean girls the musical
dragon games evil queen. she wants to watch the world burn. that's it.
what's wrong with me - mean girls the musical
two takes on this:
-daring having existential crisis after existential crisis when he finds out he's not apple's prince charming, and he's on a downwards spiral
-i have mentioned this on my blondie ask post, but blondie realizing she's been intruding no-no business and stuff
no control - spongebob squarepants the musical
when raven didn't sign, i'd imagine the crowd just singing this because they're panicking, waiting for them to disintegrate, and since they have 'no control' over the poof-ing-ness, i think it fits
bff - spongebob squarepants the musical
i mentioned this briefly on my maddie ask post, but remember that scene in the first book in the trilogy Shannon Hale wrote? The one where Raven froze everyone because of a sudden outburst and she unfroze Maddie? yes, that one. i think maddie would try to cheer up raven with this song.
(okay before i end, i just wanna say that wicked and spongebob squarepants the musical are musicals that kind of reflect parts of the eah plot)
i think that's it, i'm too lazy to add more songs, plus i was kind of running low on musical songs i had saved, so yeah, i might do a part 2, because this was a lot of fun despite it being a hard time to write out and explain (also, side note, this post has 933 words)
1/2 and 5x07: Just so you know. He put the third cd into the dvd player, realized there’s only 2 cds left and started screaming ‘no no noooo’ so we’re doing fine: ‘okay…fix *waves his hand around* everything that happened’ ‘BRIAN! Look at him being all pretty and shit. His name is brandon? *scoffs* lame’ Ben says Mikey still has a healthy baby daughter ‘bro what the fuck? Bro you ignored Hunter for half a season cause of that baby’ ‘why am i deprived of Brian and Emmett? They’d make an amazing duo and they are robbing me of it!’ ‘Since when do we get along with Lindsay’s mom? I thought we all agreed together that she was a bitch?’ And we are at the diner when they read about Prop 14 ‘we’re going political AGAIN? Hold up, i cant focus on two things right now. Since when are Blondie and Mike working together all the time? When did that happen? Okay now back to politics. (Justin mentions prop 14 ruining everything for ben and mikey) why is he suddenly so obsessed with them? Why the fuck are both of them so obsessed with Brian and marriage now? What the fuck is happening?’ The scene after ted has his fuck marathon is on and he imagines Em and Brian ‘SEE! THEY WOULD MAKE A PERFECT DUO! They can still make up to me for all the BS by giving me them’ AND WE ARE OFFICIALLY AT THE WORST SCENE ‘AH Blondie!! Come on Blondie, get that stick out of your ass and well I’m not gonna finish that sentence but it involves Bri Bri. *he literally kicks his feet in the air* did you see Brian’s smile when he saw Justin laying in their apartment on their couch! That is a man in love, he just has to say it! (Flashback to pilot happens) OH MY GOD!! THE PILOT! Brian is having flashbacks to their first night and now theyre living together! AW HE MISSED HIM AT THE CLUB! Why does Justin sound so bored about the club’s success? He literally helped him start it? He was thinking? Oh god no. (Justin says he made some decisions)..okay, what do you want Blondie? Because you’ve been confusing both of us for like 7 episodes now. *pauses tv* Where in the fuck was Brian making fun of him? What? He literally has been hyping up his career since the beginning? *starts ep again but he is stressed with his hand in his hair* he’s making you nervous? Bitch, he’s making ME nervous too! Whats going on? Okay but he changes his fucking mind like every other scene. (justin says to be a couple you gotta want the same things) i thought they did want the same things? *looks at me all sad* why does this sound like a break up? (Justin says why are they still doing this if its not gonna work) cause of me! What the fuck is going on?! BRIAN LOOKS SAD! HE ALREADY PACKED?! HE ALREADY DECIDED TO LEAVE BEFORE THEY TALK?! Brian stop him please! Tell him you love him! (Justin hugs Brian) *said very softly* don’t. Brian looks heartbroken. Of course he still cares where he’s gonna go. (justin leaves the loft) whoever wrote this, i hope they have explosive diarrhea.’ He then paused the episode and went outside to smoke. *walks in with his hair all over the place and stressed* ‘they just got back together! They went through cancer together! They moved in together! And now they’re ripped apart again?! What the fuck is this shit? Whats going on in this fuck ass season? Wait a second i need to do something’ *goes to his room and changes his shirt from the justin shirt to a brian shirt and then comes back without saying a word and plays ep and it shows Lindsays dad* ‘man, fuck you too’ And Justin is now with Deb/Em ‘i agree with Deb. But also clearly Blondie made up his mind so obviously Bri Bri would not stop him. Didnt expect? Bro you packed up your things before you even talked to him! WHY ARE THEY ALL PRETENDING LIKE THEY DONT KNOW BRIAN LOVES HIM?!’
Deb says how could he do that to justin and he pauses tv ‘DO WHAT?! I mean sure he’s been acting very….pilot-y but GAY RIGHTS *lifts his cast up in attempt to make a fist* but also gay wrongs. Besides he even said Blondie was making him nervous! Blondie is the one who keeps changing his fucking mind, i mean come on?! Marriage? Kids? HOUSE?! At 20? *plays ep* (Justin defends Brian..) you tell them! But dont move on. I don’t want that to happen, it can’t! I decided they end up happy together. *actually shouts it* HES STAYING WITH BEN AND MICHAEL?! OH ISNT THAT FUCKING RICH. You know what? I preferred when they hated each other. (justin says even tho he will miss Brian this will be good for him, right?) no. Absolutely not. It also won’t be good for me. I think we are all forgetting about me!’
Ben says Mikey still has a healthy baby daughter ‘bro what the fuck? Bro you ignored Hunter for half a season cause of that baby’ And let's not skip over the "healthy" bit. Sorry a sick kid wasn't enough for you.
why am i deprived of Brian and Emmett? They’d make an amazing duo and they are robbing me of it! Welcome to the Cult of KinneyCutt Brother Anon, it's lovely here.
*said very softly* don’t. Brian looks heartbroken. Of course he still cares where he’s gonna go.
I am so sorry Anon and Brother Anon. We all knew this was going to happen and we let you watch it and now your heart is broken and it's only a rollercoaster from here on out.
whoever wrote this, i hope they have explosive diarrhea. I can't imagine what he's going to wish on the writers at 513, I really don't.
This "they just got back together! They went through cancer together! They moved in together! And now they’re ripped apart again?! What the fuck is this shit? Whats going on in this fuck ass season?" and This "I mean sure he’s been acting very….pilot-y but GAY RIGHTS *lifts his cast up in attempt to make a fist* but also gay wrongs. Besides he even said Blondie was making him nervous! Blondie is the one who keeps changing his fucking mind, i mean come on?! Marriage? Kids? HOUSE?! At 20?" Is the best summary of what's wrong with S5. Brian regresses to S1 Brian and Justin regresses to S1 Justin and all growth is completely erased.
I appreciated that he changed shirts. Respect.
I think the S2 break up is entirely necessary for the characters to grow and their development arc. S5 comes out of left field within the context of the entire show.
Book One, Chapter Six
CW: Strong Language, Sexual References, Graphic Violence, Fantasy Bigotry, Smoking, Alcohol Use
Inside of his office, Gilroy’s busy musing over which cup of several would make the best possible hole at the end of a floor golf green, the strip of thin fabric designed to replicate the lush and disgustingly well kept grass of a proper course. He has several lined up, settled onto their sides already so that he can inspect the qualities of their resting posture. His favorite wine glass, he notices, doesn’t rest flatly enough. It has to be a glass with sheer sides, perfect right angles and straight edges, not one of his many curved ones. In a moment of clarity, he realizes that a whiskey tumbler would be his best choice. It’s the only type of glass that works well in this regard, and he’s about to set one of his favorites onto the ground with a gentle, almost caring gingerness before something shrill rings in the back closet of his sizable office.
He sets the glass on his desk with a low huff; this had better be good, because if it isn’t it’s eating into his practice. If it’s another call from human resources about the way Blondie acts on the site, he thinks, somebody’s going to get sacked or be killed. With a swing of the closet door and a brief step inside, he takes the receiver off of its hook and places it against his ear, picking up the transmitter with his other hand to hold it beside his mouth, greeting his caller with a swift, unsubtle, “This better be worth the time.”
“Worth your time? That’s cute, Harry. I’m the one handling the checkbooks,” replies an amused voice. “It’s Penelope. I’m calling ahead to let you know that I’ve elected to send somebody down to help you out with that little incident of yours.”
Gilroy’s jaw sets. His shoulders roll, his body is tense. Don’t ask which one, Harry, that’d tell her there’s a lot on the plate and she’s obviously only heard about one of them. Bad enough she’s got some cretin coming around now of all times, Blondie’s presence is already a problem. It wouldn’t be Damage Assessment if it wasn’t something she thinks might be a monetary issue. What else has happened? Pick something. Pick one thing, just one thing, and it’s probably what she’s calling about. “Look, I talked it out with her, she’s fine. Nothing to worry about, Penny.”
“Call me Penny on the company line one more time and I’ll cut your bonus,” she snaps, “and I’m not calling about that. Is that something I should be calling about? What have you done now? Who do I need to send checks to this time?”
“If you’re not in the know on that then it means it’s handled, don’t freak out on me. We’re not sending out checks, nobody’s sending checks right now.” Nothing backfires quite as spectacularly as thinking you’re in control. “I have no idea why you’d need to send anyone down to a place like this. The Smokestone Location is fine. Nothing’s going on and there’s nothing you need to start writing reports on, Penelope.”
On the other side of the line, Gilroy can hear the incredulity in her sigh. It really isn’t appreciated at a time like this, all things considered. At least Blondie tends to stop being a problem when you can’t see him; Hickory’s all the way in Black Hill and she’s still going to cause some kind of trouble with this investigator. It’s always an Investigator. Never a great new hire for his sites, never anything of worth, just some idiot with a pen, paper, and occasionally a gun.
After a moment of disbelieving silence she says, “I’ll be frank with you, Harry, everything that I’ve been told points to there being something going on, and while you might not like it because it ruffles your stupid looking suits, I need to make sure there’s nothing dangerous to our bottom line going on down there. So, while sending a temp down there to snoop around might not be your favorite thing I’ve ever done, I want you to know that if there’s nothing wrong then you have nothing to worry about but an extra mouth to feed in your fun little backwoods fiefdom. Her name’s Brie, and she’s a perfectly normal human far as I can tell. A little on the blunt side. Play nice.”
“It isn’t the backwoods! What do you think this is? Gutters’ Glade?”
“You didn’t even deny the fiefdom bit, funny.” Hickory snorts, then lets out a wolfish whuff. Across the line, there’s the identifiable sound of a predator licking its chops. “If she turns up nothing, then that’s that. The chairs and chiefs don’t complain when they get a clean report, they complain I paid for a temp. If there’s something wrong she’ll find it, and regardless of how much you hate it, we’ll fix it as a team. And if there is something and you actually manage to hide it for once, Harry?”
He can hear her grin over the phone. It’s an insult. She’s toying with him because she’s got nothing else to do, maybe. Gilroy doesn’t answer.
“If you manage to hide it, then see example A. It’s not a personal thing. Damage Assessment isn’t just about occasional vandalism on the front of the HQ building and broken pickaxes. Feel free to tell me if there’s anything else going on down there that I need to pay for,though.”
He grumbles. “With this kind of treatment I’d swear you had it in for me. I’ve already got enough to deal with without one of your little friends coming by to make it harder for me.” If both hands weren’t busy handling the transmitter and receiver of this phone, he’d be putting his head in them.
A real, howling fit of laughter bursts out from the receiver, and Hickory caps it off with an incredulous snort of derision. “I’m sure right now you’re so very stressed out over what random object in your office to use as a fake fishing rod. Harry, you know the company picnic isn’t for months, right.”
“I am not. I’m seeing which of my glasses might make for a good golfing hole and before you say anything, the answer’s a whiskey tumbler. Not a snifter. They roll too much.”
“You’ve proven my point, but good luck with your indoor golf. I think after this phone call I might go hit up the actual course with Janet and a few friends. You know, because I live somewhere civilized.”
Gilroy scowls. “I do not live here! Everything just keeps happening down this way and I need to be here to handle it. I’ll be back in Black Hill soon, don’t act like I live in this shitpile— Janet, huh?”
“What about her?”
“Is that why Blondie’s down here right now? You feel like getting more BFFs time with his wife so you decide to point him in my direction? He’s here. He’s here and for the love of fucking God I really, really wish he wasn’t, Hickory. Is this your fault?” He snarls the question out, scratching the transmitter with a developing claw.
“Harry, good God, do you think I hate you? No, I didn’t send Blondie down that way. I knew he was out and about, but I had no clue he was down there.” Her tone dips into something almost genuine, though hidden behind a small sheet of intrigue and some many miles of autumnal woodland. “I’d known you’d already been dealing with him today I would’ve just given it to you straight about the temp hire. I wouldn’t point him in the direction of my worst enemy, Harry, and I don’t hate you. I don’t really like you all that much but I don’t hate you.”
“Oh, today? You think he just got here today? He’s been here for a few at least! I’ve lost track because the past week’s been nonsensical with some of the crap coming across my desk. People getting knocked out for a damn week, new machinery coming in, the security initiative, and now Blondie himself is bumming around my worksites racking up who knows how many HR complaints a day for everything from offhand comments about the diurnals and nocturnals to whatever’s his latest superiority complex involves, and that’s not even getting into the times he’s called some of the organics flower children or tree fuckers!” Gilroy’s shaking, he can feel his carefully combed hair coming undone as he trembles with scarcely contained fury. “He shoved one of my favorite foremen’s head into a table over a fucking cookie, Penny! A fucking cookie!”
“I guess I’ll be getting all of those HR complaints whenever they finally decide to send them. You need to calm down. I enjoy a good bit of melodrama but I can hear that you’re halfway to howling already and I’m not going to write you a check for a stress-out destruction of your suit or your office furniture.” She sighs again.
Gilroy is quieter when he speaks again, but only because he’s developed from nearly howling into low growls, saying, “I need this big white bastard out of here, Penelope. He is a time bomb, and if I don’t have this man out of my hair within the week I think I’m going to kill him.”
Penelope Hickory snorts. “He’d kill you, but I get the picture. I can’t make any promises, but I can talk with some people to get the wheels turning. It won’t be in the next week, since the chairs are busy. I’ll put in a meeting request asap, try to convince them that they need him on a job sooner or they’re wasting his pay.”
“So I’m stuck with him? Great, fine, amazing. I can live with this, I guess.”
“His timing’s weird, though. Right after your little incident with those miners, but before I’ve managed to send somebody down. You should start worrying, Gilroy.” She hums, and back in her office in Black Hill she leans back in her chair. “This is either one anxiety-inducing coincidence or something’s going to happen.”
“What do you mean?”
“If he’s shown up, and these reports just happen reek of bullshit, then the universe is about to pull a prank on you. At this point I think he just has some kind of sixth sense for situations where his talent is needed. All good adventurers and mercs have that to them, like it’s inevitable something’s going to go wrong somewhere and they just appear out of thin air to capitalize on it.” Her pen clicks in her hand, and her red eyes drift toward a stack of contracts, bills, and other assorted paperwork placed distinctly separate from her normal fare, all with a heavy paperweight atop it labeled “BLONDIE.” “If he’s decided to show up now of all times, prepare. It’s one of the few pieces of wisdom you’ll get from me as someone who’s had to clean up after his type for this long.”
“Don’t be superstitious, Penelope, or you’ll start sounding like the hicks out here or those pricks with the Arcane Cleanup Initiative. Treehuggers…”
Hickory laughs one last time, then tells him, “Bye, Harry. Good luck with Blondie and have fun with whatever blows your way. See you sometime.”
“Goodbye, Penelope.” When the transmitter and receiver are both finally hung up, Harry Gilroy exits his walk-in office closet and shuts it once more. And then he returns to his lineup of glasses on his desk and, from them, once again picks out his preferred option.
It’s a simple whiskey tumbler of crystal glass, with twelve perfectly straight sides running up with hard corners. It’s the perfect size and shape, he thinks.
It rests gently against the green fabric on the floor when he places it on top, and when he retrieves a single, dimpled ball and a putter from one of the larger and more lavishly decorated shelves in his office, the feel of his hand around the golf ball and its opposite around the grip of the putter is enough to instill a sense of control. Placing the ball, lining up the shot, and then, finally, sinking it into the glass with a single, measured swing all serve to bring about further security.
When the ball can sail that smoothly, nothing can go wrong. Penelope’s crazy.
“You’re sure this is a smart idea? What if it blows up? Cherry— Cherry says that—”
“Olive, standing with me between you and the machine won’t do anything because you’re bigger than me and if it hits me, it’ll probably hit you. And no, it won’t blow up. Cherry is going to make sure it doesn’t blow up, because if it does blow up and he isn’t killed by it I’ll kill him myself,” says Judith to the Owl, who habitually tightened the band beneath her hardhat to make certain it was still holding on her feathery head. “This isn’t going to be like last time. IS IT, CHERRY?”
“No ma’am!” Replies the Techie, who at this point has one hand holding the manual open and the other hand continuing to twist a valve he had been adjusting for the last fifteen minutes. The sight of it makes Leon uneasy, as does the presence of their gray uniformed foreman, but she appears to be focused on other grudges at the moment. So, he slips in to settle into a standing position beside Azariah, who had been standing by Cherry while the machine was set up.
Judith tosses a small bag to Leon, who nearly fumbles the catch until the Hare beside him pushes up one of his arms, and there’s a derisive snort from beneath the foreman’s military grade breathing mask. “You’re getting slow. You two, help Cherry with the mixing.”
“Mixing?” Leon asks, stepping over to the gemcutter with the bag as Cherry plugs a heavy tube that runs outside of the mineshaft into the machine. It runs to a large generator sitting on the other side of the entrance.
“Mixing! You see, it takes in sandy gemstone bits leftover from the refining process, and streams them into high pressure water blasts to do its cutting! On the setting we’re using, anyways! Just make sure to be precise with the amount, we need exactly half or less of the bag for this, Leon,” replies Cherry, whose enthusiasm to work with this new model was only rivaled by his newfound fear of Judith, the latter of which being the reason he did not mention there’s a chance the thing might malfunction if there’s too much particulate in the water system.
At the mention of the particulate, Leon’ face twists into a deeper frown than his resting expression, though the change is only noticeable to Judith. Slag. Of course it had to be slag. It’s a small shift, usually following a moment like hearing that one’s contract had been adjusted for the fifth time. She makes a brief, waving gesture.
Opening the bag slightly, he stares down into the all too familiar dust before walking over toward the front end of the gemcutter, where there’s a small plate to open and dump the particulate in. He’s slow, careful about pouring it—
“HALF THE BAG!” Cherry shouts, unbridled anxiety and excitement seizing control of his volume.
Leon takes a heavy, sputtering breath and nearly coughs his lungs out before he realizes the bag’s inside the machine, and by the time he pulls the small sack back out all of the dust is in the water. “Yeah, half!” He replies, raising his voice slightly before shutting the plate and stuffing the bag into one of the deep pockets of his yellow jumpsuit, walking to take up a position beside Azariah once more.
He thinks it’s going to be fine, or at least mostly fine, with only a slight risk of jamming. Maybe it’d sputter or cough a few times like he does, but they didn’t fire him for it, so he didn’t expect them to toss out a machine over it. Besides, Cherry doesn’t look like the type to talk about what might have happened to it to their bosses. Though he’s the scapegoat type, he’s not dumb enough to make himself look incompetent over something he didn’t do. Hopefully.
He’s snapped out of his stupor when Judith steps forward and raises her own voice, saying, “Alright Cherry, don’t fuck this one up!” It’s followed by a cheerful exclamation from Azariah, who has to shout in order to make his voice heard over the steady revving of the machine.
“LET ‘ER RIP, CHERRY!” The Hare hollers, raising a hand to give the technician a thumbs up before the inaugural water blast strikes stone.
Against the wall, just below where Cherry had been tasked to mine, is a tub with a hose that led over to a small box with an engine of some kind on it, which was chugging away, and that small box has another hose on the opposite end that then leads to a larger vat of water, which had a hose that leads into the underside of the machine, completing a largely inefficient but vigorously attempted water recycling system. Cherry had constructed it mostly by himself, as the instructions on the matter are vaguely written with the exception that all materials used were supposed to be of the highest quality Borehole Co. stock, but around there it’s cheaper to make use of another subsidiary’s materials than the supplying company’s.
The machine purrs at first, striking Leon as a sort of beast, like the older gemcutters and some of the jackhammers, but there’s an unmistakable chill to the growls of a machine. It isn’t like an animal or a person; it’s like thunder, miniaturized. A force of nature, encapsulated inside of a steely tube with knobs and levers and all manner of twisted plumbing. It isn’t helping his ears any that the rumbling is contained within the walls of a mineshaft.
Then the purrs become a snarl, and with a hiss the particulate-mixed water blasts the wall, digging in slowly and steadily. All Leon, Azariah, and Olive have to do is keep the machine balanced. There are handles nearby Cherry’s spot that allow them to hold and steady it, but only Azariah does at first. When the machine threatens to tip down slightly, nearly grazing a part of the water recycling system, Leon steps in to help.
It’s grating work, keeping the beast steady. Cherry’s not enough to handle the pressure, and soon enough the heat’s irritating too. Only minutes into their mining and already it feels like they’re inches away from the meal shack’s griddle.
“It sounds like it’s dyin’, Judith!” Olive said to the foreman, the anxiety in her tone infectious. “It sounds like it’s gonna blow. It looks like it’s gonna blow. I think it’s gonna blow.”
“The other one sounded like it was going to die, Olive, but it didn’t. Cherry just punched a hole in a wall and put us in the fucking hospital, but the old machine’s still fine so it’s probably not broken— Cherry’s the one that needs a tune up.” Nothing like flagrant hostility to get fire under a worker’s ass.
“Are you sure it’s safe to be near it? I mean it’s— it’s startin’ to sputter.”
Leon’ and Judith’s lips purse at the same time, in response to the same, disconcerting sound; while the machine had sounded vigorous for that time, it had started just then to make a sound more akin to someone coughing up water, gasping for breath but only pushing out liquid. Then it becomes a thick, harsh clunking, as though some solid were bouncing around inside.
Then the blast stops but the internals do not, and everyone’s staring, wide-eyed, confused.
 “That’s not supposed to happen,” Cherry says, pink-gray eyebrows rising in surprise.
“Really? Thanks for clarifying,” the Foreman’s cold voice drawls out from beneath her mask as she steps over to them.
“How do you fix it, Cherry?” Asks Azariah, as Leon steps back from the machine.
Cherry’s hands both leave the machine at once, opening up the manual and swiftly flipping through pages while Azariah holds the whole weight of it, eyes widening. “Cherry, we should— boy, turn it off!” He shouts, trying to get his voice over the sudden surge in the clanging.
“There’s an issue in the design— off switch, off button, maybe unplug it? It says not to unplug it while it’s running but shutting it off means reversing everything, turning all the adjustments back down to nil!”
“WHAT?” “I GOTTA DO THE STARTUP IN REVERSE!”
“Hurry up!” Shouted Judith, stomping over to them. A single second burst of water escapes the machine and nearly knocks it over, sending Azariah and Cherry scrambling for balance while Judith ducks and both Olive and Leon dash for the exit. “Shut down the generator, Olive! SHUT IT DOWN! CHERRY, TURN OFF THIS STUPID SHIT! DUMBASS!”
Cherry and Azariah both had been deftly keeping their feet dry in the mine, as Cherry’s shoes and Azariah’s paws weren’t exactly meant for wet, slippery spots, but all the jostling dislodged the tube from the recycling tub, sending a sizable torrent of used, dusty water across the floor while the gemcutter continues to clang and jerk, like an animal trying to escape a man’s embrace.
“Shut it off NOW, CHERRY! NOW! NOW!” Judith screams, grabbing at the handles Leon had vacated in an attempt to balance it.
“DON’T SHOUT AT THE GODDAMN KID, HE’S TRYIN’ HIS BEST!” Azariah cries in turn.
The Hare and the Foreman are practically leaning their heads over the machine, their masks’ filters mere inches away as they scream and attempt to keep balance while Cherry, having tossed the manual aside, rapidly pulls and twists levers, knobs, and valves. The metal is hotter than it’s supposed to get, and the harness isn’t properly insulated like the handles. It’s hurting his chest, it’s hurting his hands, and it’s getting harder and harder to breathe in the mask. No dust, just heat.
Judith moves to scream something in return, but one of them slips. Judith slips. Her boots are boots meant for working, but not in wet conditions. They’re meant for gravel, not water on stone.
Leon falls to his knees a yard from the generator, clutching at his chest, coughing and sputtering as Olive swiftly passes him, rushing for the power switch. Before she can throw it, before she can get her feathery fingers around it, there’s a crash inside of the mineshaft, a loud bang, and a shrill scream.
 When his breathing and his vision clears, Leon realizes Olive is panicking, shaking his shoulders. He can smell the inside of his mask, the sweat from the heat of the machine, some residual dust on his face, the worn plastic and cloth of the mask itself. Sound returns to him last, and the Owl’s voice is as panicked as her expression.
“It blew up! It blew up, it blew up, it BLEW UP—”
“Fuck,” Leon grumbles, grabbing at her shoulder to stand properly again. “We’ve got to see how bad it is. Don’t get anyone yet, Olive. If we call the doc out for Judith and she’s fine, we can get charged for a false call.”
Nodding, Olive takes one of the man’s large arms, her own just about the same bulk, and walks back into the mineshaft with him.
Inside, the floor is wet and hot, covered with the heated water from the machine, which now sits in a broken, blown out heap between the three miners, one in red, one in orange, and one in gray. Cherry sits up first, and despite the ringing in his ears and a stinging pain all over his body, he realizes he isn’t massively wounded. Cut on the forehead and his hands are going to develop blisters, but he’s in one piece.
Azariah, likewise, sits up. There’s scorched fur on his arms and legs, and his already damaged ear is bleeding a bit from a large cut, but it’s nothing life threatening.
 Judith, meanwhile, is clutching at her hand, her voice hoarse and hitching in her throat underneath the gas mask, rocking from one side to the other as she makes a repeated pressing movement, as if to put pressure on her wrist.
All gather around her, closing the distance and asking if she was okay, if she had a cut, if she were bleeding from a wound on her wrist until, finally, it slipped out from between her fingers. Her right hand lands on the ground, cut around a few inches below her wrist, taking some of her forearm with it.
The bleeding is sluggish, minimal; the wound is seared shut due to the heat of the metal that cut through her arm, though it’s not perfect, and it’s certainly not clean. Leon and Cherry both feel a sudden surge in their gut, and they both turn away.
Olive’s entirely silent, but the inside of her mask is fogging up from her own quickened breathing as she sits beside Judith and holds her close, repeating “We should’ve got the doctor,” in a high, frazzled tone.
Cherry speaks in a cringing voice as he looks to Leon, who’s already shaking his head. “Oh my god, we need to clean it out, that stuff’s really toxic! We can’t let it get into her blood, we need to… Azariah?”
Both the Techie and the Orc turn toward the Hare, who has already picked up the severed hand. “Do those particulates turn bone marrow into a kinda pearly color?” Azariah asks, and for once there’s genuine confusion in his voice. “If not, I think we’ve got bigger problems to worry about than Ms. Judith getting some bits of stone in her stump.”
“Azariah, that stuff’s a biohazard—”
The hand is tossed into the two’s arms, and they only just manage to catch it. There’s a slight glare in the low lantern light of the mine, and slowly, Cherry turns the hand to look at the wound. “What is Judith? Isn’t she human?”
“She hasn’t mentioned otherwise,” Leon replies to Cherry, quietly.
“Then it probably shouldn’t shine like… like…”
Azariah cuts in, grabbing the hand and dropping it into his own jumpsuit pocket. “Leon, Olive, Cherry, help Judith up and get her to my shack. I’ll go and get the field med, not the doc. Don’t go to any admins. Somethin’ tells me this is best kept on our level.”
The three nod and pick up the foreman, whose voice has gone silent and, though at first vigorously resisting, she has gone limp, breathing soft and shallow as she’s carried.
“And Cherry?” The old Hare asks, causing the Techie to turn and look at him as they walk toward the exit. “Moonstone. What you saw is called Moonstone.”
