Higuchi and Ranpo are just such interesting author-based characters in BSD.

I know it's weird to connect the two but hear me out...

So far, the only authors I can remember that don't have a known ability are Aya, Higuchi, and Ranpo. Aya and Higuchi will likely get an ability (latter has been confirmed to have one, at least) while Ranpo...probably won't? Though you never know.

But the reason I bring Higuchi and Ranpo together is because the latter is an author who is heavily implied to be the son of one of his IRL counterpart's characters. And meanwhile, the former is someone who has one of the real people in her IRL counterpart's life (that is to say, BSD Higuchi's sister) brought into the manga. Yeah, Tanizaki and Akuatagawa have their sisters be based off characters, and we also have Haruno based off a Tanizaki character, plus Fitzgerald's characters in the eyes of god story arc.

But I really think that it's interesting that Ranpo is the child of his own character. And that Higuchi is I think the only one with a family member that is based on IRL Higuchi's own family situation. That we might actually have a BSD character based on a real life person that wasn't a significant writer of some sort (to my knowledge, at least).

I don't really have a point with this, but it is interesting and aghhhhhhh Asagiri I'M BEGGING you to do something with Higuchi that doesn't involve Akutagawa! There's so many things about her and I want to know!

You should’ve never, ever underestimated him. He might’ve seemed aloof, fatigued, and uninterested in anything but completing a day’s work, but it was all just a façade. How could you be so stupid? To write this eldritch monster, H. P. Lovecraft, off as harmless and unthreatening was the worst mistake you could’ve made. Following closely behind choosing to walk the streets of Yokohama alone at night as an ADA detective while the conflict with The Guild had yet to be resolved, and all the members of said organization were still at large.

“Please- please!” you cried out, tears in your eyes as you were being dragged into a dark alleyway by the man with the ability no one could fathom or understand. The one not even Dazai could nullify and put up a good fight against Chuuya’s corrupted state. “Let me go! Please!”

“Please stop talking,” Lovecraft deadpanned, sounding as bored and indifferent as he would if you had only asked him what time it was. His face was completely expressionless in the most terrifying way. “I just want this done.”

Despite his wishes, you still continued to thrash in his oddly strong arms – you never would’ve guessed based on his general appearance, another mistake – even as he pinned you down facedown against an abandoned dumpster and tugged your pants down. You couldn’t see it but you could hear it – the way his arm that wasn’t holding you down transformed from human skin and bone to… something else. Something green, wet, and slimy. A tentacle. One that was currently slithering down the back of your panties and poking at your hole.

"Why are you doing this?” you wailed, coiling away from the disgusting, horrifying feeling of the appendage attempting to touch your sex.

◇ fukuzawa retires but still comes around to check on his kids former employees and is on standby in case of any future disaster

◇ kunikida and ranpo agree to co-lead the agency. kunikida takes care of most of the paperwork and employee affairs (pour one out for kida) while ranpo keeps an eye out for cases that could be DoA level threat

◇ everybody gets therapy 🥳🎉!! that government hush money compensation check for being attacked by the Hunting Dogs was partially spent on a getting therapists who could actually help them with their issues (pour another one out for the therapists bc the shit they have to deal with...)

◇ genderfluid atsushi (he/she/they), agender dazai (he/him or it/its), nonbinary sigma (they/he)

◇ kunichuuzai canon. dazai and kunikida got together first, then kunikida and chuuya and finally after many schemes dazai and chuuya talked abt their feelings for each other and got together shortly after

sorry i have to brainfart this somewhere but mersault chuuya wearing almost damn near similar clothing to his youth got me thinking about dazai and chuuya's fashion choices.

dazai, in all the eras where he was in the mafia....never changes his outfit. it fitting, given his character and such.....so his ada outfit makes him look like a rainbow. dark blue vest, blue gem(?) bolo tie, striped shirt and a tan coat similar to oda's. i think it's cool, to show the stark contrast between his pm days and how he's faring now, aswell to show how much effect oda had on him.

chuuya.....is the complete opposite. boy changes his clothes all the time. but it's so interesting.

his fifteen outfit is very "him" in a sense. street kid, street kid style- red shirt, grey hoodie, green leather jacket, bright blue sheep armband. he fits right in with the rest of the sheep, and hes so...colorful here. almost similar to ada dazai's outfit. and then theres the outfit he wears in the mafia- the first one we saw back in the manga where he seems to be wearing like a..."beta" version of his current outift- but the way it was drawn (disregarding the anime for a second) it looks like its almost ill fitting for him. the vest is too big, the coat looks so heavy, the tie isnt properly tucked, and his pants are baggy. like hes struggling to "fit in".

then theres sb outfit- hes wearing the standard mafia outfit like higuchi, but with his own touches- rolled up sleeves, glasses tucked in his breastpocket, choker, gloves. its not much, but even higuchi doesnt do anything to hers. we kinda see him "getting into" the mafia work, and theres no pop of color here. the dragon head conflict outift is different though- hes wearing clothes that are "his style" again. simple shirt, jacket, choker, gloves. he also has his red petticoat (i think thats what it is? whatever that long cloth underneath his jacket) that, once again, gives him some color. i dunno what spured the outfit change, but i honestly think the red color is his own touch- his own "color"

and then current chuuya. no color at all, maybe safe from the ribbon on his hat. he wears his coat on his shoulders, similar to pm dazai. (also, slight off tangent here- he always loses his coat whenever hes dealing with dazai?? i think?? which is. interesting. given with how glued pm dazai's coat is to his own shoulders. like he actively takes it off/gets it taken off and i SWEAR this only even happens when hes with dazai. idk. ever since asagiri said beast dazai wearing his coat fully to signify him accepting his role as the pm boss ive been. thinking about it. a lot.)

where was i going with this?? oh yeah. why is mersault chuuya wearing his old clothes?? specifically fifteen clothes? like was it his off day or something. bc if you look at chuuyas various outfit as his progression towards the mafia then him wearing his old non mafia clothes either means two things : 1. this is to signify chuuya, under vampire influnce, is well. obviously not loyal to the mafia atm. or 2. something might happen in the future that makes him swear allegiance to someone else which i dont find possible but??? who knows. im overthinking this

"dazai, in all the eras where he was in the mafia....never changes his outfit." His outfit stays pretty similar, you're right, though he does actually change it once during his mafia days. The left image is the outfit he wears in Fifteen and Stormbringer, while the right is what he wears in DHC and Dark Era.

The difference is the blazer jacket he adds under his coat. It's a minimal change but I think it's significant. I mentioned in this post how I believe the change might be related to his change in pronoun from boku to watashi, but really it's more the added layer of distance that makes this significant. Dazai just looks a little... odd, in the first outfit. The coat hangs off him loosely, his shirt is a little baggy. He looks very boyish, and that makes his deceptive tendencies and deeply concerning outlook all the more disturbing to others.

The second outfit makes one change but his clothes now look like they fit him (still with the exception of the coat, which never fit and never will... in this universe anyways. You mentioned Beast so... you know already hehe). In the case of the second outfit, he looks more mature and formal, which lends itself to a person who withdrew further and further away from people (with the exception of the other two at Bar Lupin); who became a terrifying executive in other's eyes, moving away from the "creepy intelligent child" image he had earlier - even though he is still very much a kid. No one knows Dazai - I think the added image of formality and authority here is just one of the many barriers he constructed to keep people from getting too close.

No but you're right about the coat looking a bit like Oda's. He cared for and respected that man like no other and I think when Dazai thinks of "a good person" Oda is the first person who comes to mind. His shirt in the manga is also stripy like Oda's, a little detail that got lost in the anime. :')

Yeah. He looks every bit the street kid and blends with the Sheep near perfectly - more than fitting in though, I think it's more than implied that he wants to fit in and changes his look to do so. Chuuya goes to great lengths to give the appearance of fitting in - because he never felt like he truly did (and certainly the Sheep did not treat him like an equal or a friend).

YES you get it!! And adding onto that, Chuuya doesn't really have a lot of reason to want to fit in yet. He hasn't found his personal groove yet, because he has little personal attachment to the mafia at this point in time.

Yeah in Stormbringer he's got a few personal touches but is still pretty non-descript (though you're right, it's much more than Higuchi... something to think about for her character too, and how it seems the mafia may be more of a job than an investment to her). By Dead Apple though, Chuuya's outfit is... well, back to his punk vibes, just a little more mafia-classy, I guess. (I don't know fashion I'm sorry, please don't kill me)

Red makes a lot of sense as a colour for Chuuya. It's energetic, emotional, fierce and aggressive. It's also considered protective, so yeah it suits him for sure. Red clothes, red ability... red camellias...

I see the coat as a representation of his role and responsibility he takes on, really, so it's interesting that the formality and symbolism of his service to the mafia gets quite literally discarded in the scenes with his foil and equal. Fascinating.

Because of the purplish hue over this piece of new art, I find it hard to tell what the actual colours of his outfit are but it does look awfully similar to his Fifteen outfit. It could just be his "day-off" outfit but I think there's got to be more to it than that. It could have to do with allegiance, like you suggested. May I also suggest the return to a sense of inhumanity?

These are also the clothes he wore when his journey to find answers on himself began. Might he be entering a new arc where he has to "find" himself again?

I still feel we don't have enough information to make a solid judgement. As the meursault pov continues, I think we'll have a better reason as to why he's dressed like this.

okay so the way i draw skk is pretty inconsistent i think but...!!!!

I think its pretty apparent in most chuuyas i draw that i am a BIGGG freckle chuuya enjoyer. it's what he deserves. but also ive been picking up on dark circles/eyebags and such for him too. real and canon to the enlightened one. OH AND PIERCINGS ‼️

NOW AS FOR DAZAI‼️

i like giving him moles fhrhej typically i do one under his left eye and one by the right side of his mouth but occasionally I'll slip some extra in. i also like giving him eyebags... i don't think his sleep schedules the greatest. i think tend to make them darker for port mafia dazais and less obvious for ada dazai ? thats how it is in my head

...and i really like freckles okay shhhhhshshshshh but i do imagine them to be a lot fainter or non-existent when hes younger, being visible when he's older. getting more sun. but i do draw them as a lot lighter than or sparser than chuuyas, like here.

personally i think hes got dark brown hair, but a bit darker in the mafia because he doesn't take care of it often enough. had i actually been focusing on consistency id probably note like. flatter darker hair (oily) for the mafia & curly hair in the ada. curly haired dazai 🔛🔝...

NOW FOR HEADCANONS IN GENERAL (BUT SLIGHTLY MORE DAZAI IM SO SORRY HE IS ON MY MIND ALWAYS)

so like its early chuuya wakes up n hes like, "dazai get up, we've got work" "....mmmgmghgh" "geett upppp" "5 more minutessfuhgdskseof" "no" *sleepy puppy eyes* "please?" and then chuuya doesnt say anything.. but he snuggles up again w dazai and its cute (domestic skk kills me). obviously, this makes them end up with getting a late start to the day!!! this is all rlly cute yeah but now im imagining the mad dash to get ready,,, ive got two scenarios!!!!!!

1) Dazai is lazing around and Chuuya is like "Chop CHOP. We gotta GO!" Chuuya's got two cups of coffee poured, slipping on his coat, hair slightly damp from the like 5 minute shower he had to squeeze in. and then theres dazai who's just like, "I'm late every day Chuuyyyyaaaa stawwwpp" as Chuuya's just rushing for Dazai to get ready on top of himself Chuuya, basically force feeding Dazai coffee and then Dazai who is like "Chuuya, I'm late every day, please... it's ok.." and Chuuya's like "What?!? No!!!!" and shoves a change of clothes into Dazai's arms

2) Double Black gets into ACTION! They are working as like a team to get ready together so they can both be on time. And like obviously everybody knows they make a great team and you bet this can also apply to late mornings!!!!! and its like. beautiful. (im delusional) They start off moving all slow and both take a big stretch as they get out of bed... and then their eyes lock. It's show time. Chuuya rushes to the closet, Dazai leaves the room and goes elsewhere. As Chuuya emerges from their room, fully dressed, he gives Dazai a change of clothes, but Dazai was already walking towards the door to their room before Chuuya could even be seen. Dazai (hair + teeth brushed) gives Chuuya coffee and a hairbrush. Toothbrushes and facial products are already opened and ready for Chuuya to use at the counter next to the sink. They wordlessly exchange the coffee and clothes, Chuuya gets ready at the sink and Dazai enters their rooms and changes into the clothes Chuuya picked out, not even paying attention to what Chuuya gave him as he puts everything on because he TRUSTS HIM. They then meet at the door to the house/apartment (idk) and slip on their shoes and/or jackets at the same time and walk out all cool and whatever. Dazai swings open the door, Chuuya locks it as he follows after him. As they walk away Dazai's making jokes and Chuuya's sighing yet smirking as he listens. They eventually part ways when Dazai goes to the ADA and Chuuya to the mafia. it's stunning.

The Snowfury

Im writing a bsd Httyd au, because I have an inescapable obsession with both series.

To summarize without many spoilers (incase I ever do finish any fic in the series instead of just planning to write them), ADA are dragon riders, they love dragons, dragons love them, basically the main riders from Httyd in RTTE. Their island is just covered in rescued dragons. PM are dragon hunters who, under Moris guidance, have learned to ‘tame’ dragons through fear and abuse. Chuuya is not in the PM, he’s off being awesome and thinking everybody he loved is dead you know how it is. Atsushi (since Chuuya is not the main charcter even if I love him in this au) is a guy, who, through a series of unfortunate events, ends up with the ADA. His dragon, his bestest friend (Named Byakko, after his ability), is a lightfury (and Akutagawa had a Nightfury names Rashomon of course)

The problem with this is that I have a bit of a problem with the Lightfury. Her concept was cool, and some fanart of her is so nice! But her canon animation was just, eh, and overall I feel like her design could have been better. Some parts just don’t make sense, and really I think they could have done the ´sleek, feminine Fury species that is similar but very different than the nightfury’ idea without having her look,,,, squished. And oddly fem for a DRAGON. I always thought she felt out of place in the world of HTTYD.

So, in my efforts to slightly change her design so I could have a lightfury in my au without using the full canon design, I got carried away and now here we are, I made an entire species, for some reason.

Allow me to explain.

Lore/General Info

The ‘Lightfury’, actually known as the ‘SnowFury’ by the groups that live around them. Though even they don’t see them much. ´Lightfury’ is a term used by cultures who do not naturally have these dragons, as they mistook them for ´daytime NightFurys’ instead of arctic dragons. The dragon eye lists them as SnowFurys, but as artwork of them was limited due to their stealth, few have made the connection between the ‘two species’.

Snowfury’s share a common ancestor with the Nightfury, but evolved in an entirely different environment. While NightFurys are known to prefer forested habitats, preferable near lakes, beaches, rivers, etc, Snowfurys are found only in the snowy wastelands far to the north and far to the south. Though they are now nearly extinct in the south, that is where they were originally named aswell, and no humans are known to inhabit the north.

Just like NightFurys, they are few and far between. In the south, hunted to near extinction (perhaps they truly are gone?) and no one knows if they live in the north. Perhaps they fled there, perhaps they all died in the journey across the ocean, perhaps they have existed there forever and we will never know. Perhaps we are wrong entirely, and they have simply become even better at hiding? Some have heard they can turn invisible, not just blend in, but truly invisible

This will be explained further in the design details, but Snowfurys are larger and bulkier than NightFurys, and though still one of the fastest dragons, they fall just slightly short of the Nightfury. They have a layer of not-quite-blubber, it keeps them warmer but isn’t quite as squishy or heavy, as they still need to be sleek to fly at such high speeds. They can swim in freezing water and walk through blizzards barely noticing the cold.

Their shiny white scales make them nearly impossible to make out within the snow and ice, during a blizzard they are even more deadly. They are known to dig burrows in snow, both as nests/dens and for hunting/stealth purposes.

Changes I made and why/ cool design element of the species

No blue/pink undertones, their stark white but slightly sparkly coulouring is an amazing camoflauge, they are deadly in the snow. Though I couldn’t portray it well (can you tell ive never edited something before and am not at all an artist?), similar to the NightFurys faint stripes, they have a faint rosette pattern, almost like a snow leopard.

Not sure how visible it is, but head is less squished. Proper muzzle for fishing! And carrying babies! All those good things!

Their tail fins do not split at the end, they are known to use it almost like a shovel at times

Their claws are longer thicker and sharper than a NightFurys, they use them to grip onto ice and climb mountains with minimal effort.

Their eyes range from various blues, light teals and pale purples, nothing too vibrant though, they have very pale eyes (while nightfurys have more vibrant eyes, in bright greens and yellows and organes, even red perhaps)

Again, they are bulkier and stronger. Sacrificing a tiny bit of speed for higher strength. Still the second fastest dragon though, just slightly behind NughtFury. This extra bulk not only keeps them warmer but allows them to power through blizzards and scale icy mountains without blinking, they can swim in freezing water without getting cold and walk through deep snow. I made the Snowfurys legs a bit propertionally thicker, aswell as their neck.

Still less ear nubs, but i added a third set. They are shorter but wider than Nightfurys, it’s cold!

Back fin is rufflier and there is a smaller one on head, I mostly just liked the look. The fins on legs and back/head/tail help with aerodynamics, and swimming. They are surprisingly durable, as they need to hold up against freezing temperatures and crazy wind.

More scale definition, though not as muh as a NightFury. They have thick protective scales, but retain a smoother look, not only are they better swimmers than NightFurys but it makes them even harder to spot against the smooth shiny snow.

I made the other two tail fins larger to match the main one

Other little bits

Female Snowfurys are larger than males, and male Snowfurys are about the same as Female Nightfurys if a bit larger and male night fury’s are smaller than female nightfury’s

They have all the same ability’s as Lightfurys, retractable teeth, plasma blast, invisibility, you get it.

You could just say the Lightfruys don’t exist in this au, and Snowfurys are an unique species, but they are still called Lightfurys in most places (Americas, Yokohama seas, United Kingdom’s, etc. Only the southern frozen islands (where Fyodor and Nikolai are from in this au btw) call them Snowfurys, but they found them first so it’s the ‘true name’. It is also what’s in the dragon eye.

Do canon Lightfurys exist? Maybe, how am I supposed to know?

They swim very well as I think I mentioned, better than Nightfurys but not quite like a true tidal class dragon. They eat a lot of fish like Nightfurys, though they will eat basically anything, this would have one day perhaps included humans, but any living ones are sure to avoid humans now

They’re basically cold proof, on land and in water. They can do it but aren’t usually fans of extreme heat, since they have a natural layer of fat (not quite blubber but close) meant to keep them warm. They get hot quick and retain that heat well, they have never been seen in a warm place, though who knows if they go there or not. You rarely see them anyways,

They basically have the same reputation as Nightfurys, but since they don’t live most places even more mysterious. Nobody really knows anything about either species, even the Dragon Eye has rather vague drawings, though it’s still more info than anywhere else. It’s believed that more detailed records exists, but either nobody has found those lenses or the information wasn’t put on a lense

I’ll probably make a more detailed ref sheet with wings (same as canon LF,smoother than Nightfurys and a bit shorter and broader) and eye colours and stuff someday

Pack orientated species, just like Nightfurys. Though adults almost always hunt alone for stealthyness, they always live in groups, it’s important. They are social!

No I will not tell you what is in the north, that is a SECRET! Yes it is awesome and plot relevant and angsty but fluffy at the same time and I will make my readers cry when I write it!

I Hope this was at least somewhat coherent, I’m tired but brain won’t sleep until it gets to share its thoughts.

Will i ever actually write this? Yes probably but like, I’m currently on my avian au, Ranpo bad things happen bingo (I’m on prompt 15/25 now, whoo!) and that unfinished SKK au I’m writing (it’s like, 10k and I’m not even at the main plot what am I doing?? It’s based on a one of my favorite movies ever and includes wolves and feral woods child Chuuya btw). Someday, I will write Httyd au, eventually.

Any ideas for rider dragons are lovely,,,, you know incase you want to. I have most but there’s a few that I’m just, aaaaaah

ok so i dont have them for all the characters but uhhh here's what i got (this got unnecessarily long so im putting this under the cut):

kunikida is a commie for sure, probably an anarchist and the theory reading kind too. he's probably involved with local initiatives and tried to radicalize his coworkers at least once. he got unreasonably exited when kenji joined bc the kid is definitely a commie as well. kenji is still a little young (plus he barely knows how money works) so he's been actively explaining what capitalism is to him

kenji basically lived in a commune all his life and wants everyone to be happy, learning what capitalism is and how it works made him incredibly sad, but he's also really determined and so he's been talking about communism to everyone he meets when running around the city

ranpo is a centrist, thinks people who are legitimately invested in politics are stupid and foolish and always brings up the horseshoe theory, doesn't help that poe is crazy rich and works for capitalism incarnate

dazai, when asked, will claim whatever political ideology he thinks is the funniest in given situation, which in practice means he talks abt being an anarcho capitalist just to piss kunikida off (he's been very succesfull so far, almost convinced atsushi that the whole thing made sense). for real though, he think politics is stupid and doesn't really have that much impact, but he also only thinks of politics as the direct actions of the government, rather than ideas, and he's met enough politicians in his mafia days to consider the whole thing corrupt and not worth his time (also mori used to canonically make his read theory which i think is so so funny)

atsushi was generally cut off from the world for the majority of his life, so he only started getting interested after joining the ada. he likes to talk about it and tries to watch the news and read theory trying to develop an informed outlook. he's very left leaning and partial to communism too (except for that one time dazai almost convinced him anarcho capitalism makes sense. he doesnt like to think about it)

yosano is a marxist feminist, vehemently anti-war, she used to come to feminist reading group at a local uni. her and kunikida talk abt politics a lot in their free time and recommend books and articles to each other. she's been trying to push kyouka and naomi to look into feminism too (succesfully)

chuuya is a libertarian and i refuse to believe otherwise. he really hated rich people when he was still with the sheep but after joining the mafia and spending too much time with mori and kouyou he decided that being rich was fine, actually. also he commits tax evasion bc why not, it's hardly the worst thing he does tbh, free market enthusiast

mori is a classical liberal, also canonically seems to be pretty well versed in economic theory (he mentions henry kissinger, thomas shelling and john forbes nash during the guild arc, funnily enough). his utalitarianism really comes through when he talks about politics, they're very kill or get killed (literally or economically), believes in free market

fukuzawa is kind of weird, he doesn't really subscribe to any ideology specifically. overall he's left leaning socially (all his kids are gay, so is he) but he's never actively questioned how the world works, or looked for an alternative. worth mentioning, he used to be an assasin for the government, and the only reason he stopped was due to personal disguist with how he was starting to enjoy it, he never seemed to wonder who and why is he killing, he just did his job completely uncritically, actively benefiting the state

as ive said before, fukuchi could be a commie if he wanted to, but instead of taking initiative in publicly speaking on the horrors of war and his hatred for national states he decided to become a cop, literally the worst he could have done

ive noticed that everyone seems obsessed with fem skk and all that so allow this ask to be a breather. im gonna tell u about my newest bsd fanfic idea!!! i mean, i have other ppl to tell it to as well but they're not invested into bsd like i am. this is more or less a small passionate rant from an author so there's rlly no need to make this into one of ur inbox sketches or anything like that but i don't mind it if u do lmao

ok ok so i LOVE pretty much any humanoid creatures who primarily prey on humans (vampires, zombies, etc.) and now ive been thinking about the possibility of a zombie apocalypse au that's kinda kunikidazai based in which kunikida and dazai were separated from the rest of the ADA but still use their office as a shelter in hopes that they'll find their way back and be reunited. everything is normal up until dazai literally dies from blood loss after being attacked by zombies and kunikida, unable to simply toss his coworker's corpse into the ocean or smth even though he KNOWS he's gonna turn, decides to bring him back to their shelter and barricade him into a spare room. the next day, he wakes up to a now zombified dazai growling and scratching at the door, trying to get out. at this point, it's like a rlly good delve into his ideals and morals, and how far he'll go just to ensure that no one he cares about gets hurt/killed + it gives him a moment of irrationality in his otherwise logical mind. he should've gotten rid of his body, he should've left him behind and not have brought a massive burden on himself but he CARES!! it's evident he does even in canon in one of the light novels so i need to make more content for that.

anyways, days pass. he feeds dazai raw meat from his own rations, believing that it'll calm his friend down until he can find or make a cure for him to bring him back. and then he meets ranpo, the sole survivor of the other group of ADA members (yes, even yosano. zombies are undead and aren't close enough to death for her ability to work on but it's like a rlly fine line) ranpo, in short, is rather jaded. he lost his friends and even the person he viewed as a father figure. when he moves into the shelter in the office, he's reasonably upset by kunikida keeping what he likes to refer to as 'dazai's walking corpse' in a spare room that they could easily put to use now. they argue, ranpo says there isn't a cure and that kunikida should just let him go, kunikida asks why, and then ranpo presents The Glasses™, puts them on, then tells him the truth. there is no cure. he'd be the first to know, other than the creators themselves. once kunikida is stubborn enough to still keep good ole zombie dazai around, ranpo states that he doesn't want him eating their rations if he insists on feeding him. there is still a way to feed him, however. cut to them finding the nearest dead body and then tossing it into dazai's room and hearing him feast on it. not a good day for kunikida's values, that's for sure. oh wait hold on did i mention that i also want kunikida to make a endless supply of ammo with his notebook just in case he encounters danger (that would be cool, but he'd probably try to limit his notebook page usage)

ive also considered adding chuuya and akutagawa, as they got stranded when it happened and have been wandering around by themselves for awhile now. i feel like the cast of characters would be an interesting combination, plus they all have connections to dazai and are all upset about his current condition (to some extent). also chuuya could look at ranpo and go "you're that one punk from the agency that trapped me in a damn book!" cue him almost actually punching ranpo this time but kunikida stopping him somehow. everyone's abilities would be so good in a apocalyptic setting though. rashomon tearing into zombies long before they reach them, or for the tainted sorrow crushing hordes of them in emergency situations. great stuff

i haven't decided on the ending yet becuz there are a lot of contenders. kunikida could make a cure, or he could finally decide to deal with dazai, or they could all get zombified, or maybe he could just leave dazai stuck in that room forever while he, ranpo, and the others find a different place, becuz the ADA and PM are no more.

It was a wonderful read :)) Thanks for sharing this! I love love the idea of the bsd assemble set in a zombie apocalypse with their abilities intact! (manga spoilers// similar to the bram's vampirism but not induced by an ability kinda) There's so much to work with in that tbh, a lot of adventures and action and cool combos~

And I love the idea that it centers on Kunikidazai with Kunikida not wanting to leave Dazai behind ;w; I think it really fits them well. I remember reading an adorable webtoon similar to this—two best friends getting caught up in a zombie apocalypse, the main character tries to survive as a human and his best friend becomes a zombie that for some reason is not aggressive or attacking (protective bf troupe lezgooo) It's a very cute one, though I lost track of it's update TwT)) sorry if the comparison might sound offensive! It wasn't my intention, I just really like those kinds of troupes in apocalyptic settings hhhh /gen

How To Break Your Dazai (Part 1)

Authors Notes: Hey you know that whole drowning Chuuya thing? Yeah I took that and fixed it by turning it into a Soukoku angst fic. Yes I know there’s a lot of plot holes, we are waving goodbye to cannon in this fic. Still not sure how I feel about this chapter, I’m still trying to get a feel back for writing the character since it’s been so long. Definitely let me know if you want more!

It had been so close, too close. Dazai was good at switching up his plans, he was good at thinking on the fly and adjusting his actions accordingly, it’s what got him to the rank of Executive in the Port Mafia and it’s what’s (Begrudgingly) kept him alive for the last 22 years of life. But never had he had to make such a left turn in his plan than when Fyodor presented him with Chuuya. Never had he had to readjust so aggressively. But he did, and he succeeded… albeit barely.

Now don’t misunderstand him, this was by no means the first time someone has tried to use Chuuya as a method of forcing Dazai’s hand, and it would by no means be the last either, but it was the first time where he’d come so close to actually losing his favorite firey red head to the clutches of death. He’d seen Chuuya wreck his own body from the throws of Corruption, he’d seen him work himself to the bone for the Port Mafia, but never, EVER, had Dazai had to be the one to actually harm him. Truly harm him. Never had Dazai been the one to act upon Chuuya with intent to kill. Sure, placing a bomb under his car the night he left the Port Mafia was one thing, but he also knows his partner… Ex-partner… better than anyone could ever even hope to. He knew Chuuya would get out of that unscathed, it was a joke, not an actual attempt at harm.

This however, being forced to watch… cause… Chuuya’s drowning. Dazai had been at an optimistic 30% sure that Chuuya would be fine, that he’d be able to get to him in time enough to pull him out while he still clung to life, get him out in time to recessitate him, but as stated previously, that confidence was optimistic at best, but it was a risk he had to take, was forced to take, not only to get rid of Fyodor once and for all, but also, it was the only thing that Dazai could possibly think of to purge that virus out of Chuuya’s veins, kill him and bring him back, good as new if not a little more traumatized. Especially considering the fact that Dazai was in no position to nullify the ability that caused the infection in the first place and if he allowed Chuuya to escape the flooding then he would surely come after him and try to kill him, which while Dazai was confident about being able to out maneuver regular Chuuya in a fight, this Chuuya had the upper hand in every aspect.

It was his only option.

At least that’s what he told himself to make himself feel better, as he watched as Chuuya lie motionless in the ADA hospital room, Yosano keeping a close eye on his vitals as his chest rose and fell steadily. Chuuya was clinging to life, if Dazai had been even a second later, he would have died for good, he would have joined Fyodor at the bottom of that pit, to become a bloated corpse, Dazai felt sick at the thought.

“He’s stabilizing,” Yosano broke through Dazai’s train of thought, though his eyes never left the man in the bed. “A few days perhaps and he should wake up.”

“And the virus?” Dazai inquired, the idea of Chuuya waking up and still remaining one of those creatures making his skin crawl.

Yosano pointed to the IV drip attached to the mafioso’s arm. “Hopefully being officially cleared out of his system as we speak.” It was silent for a moment before Yosano spoke again. “Kunikida is gonna flip when he finds out you’re housing a Port Mafia executive in our offices.”

Dazai felt the hint of a smile crack his features. “I know, I’m looking forward to it.” He chimed as he leisurely turned on his heals, tossing Yosano a wave before he began his trek back to his desk, readopting his slack off attitude and general waste of space mentality. If there was anything Dazai excelled at, it was pretending to be fine.

That moment with Yosano was the only time Dazai stepped foot in the recovery room. He played his lack of visiting off with “why would I want to go sit next to a slug?” Or “waste my time looking at a sleeping hat rack? What’s that gonna do?” His excuses were transparent, all of his coworkers were just kind enough to not push further.

Well everyone except Yosano, who seemed dead set on making Dazai’s life more of a living hell than it already was.

“Why aren’t you visiting him?” She asked one day when it was just she and himself in the office. Chuuya had been in ADA custody for about two days at that point, he still hadn’t awoken. By this point most of the office checked in on him every once and a while, just to make sure he was still breathing. Despite the fact that Chuuya was one of their enemies, it was pretty clear that most of the ADA had a bit of a soft spot for him, more than most of the other Port Mafia members.

“Why should I?” Dazai asked as he tried to tune out the conversation, which he was doing by actually managing, somewhat, to write a report, which while mind numbing and painfully boring, was much better than whatever the fuck this conversation was going to turn into. “It won’t do anything for him and being in the same room as someone with such terrible taste in hats gives me a headache.”

“You’re really worried aren’t you?”

“Of course not, what makes you think that?”

“You’re antagonizing him.” Yosano spoke matter-o-factly.

“I always antagonize him.” Dazai deadpanned.

“You antagonize him to get a rise out of him. Can’t get much of a rise out of a comatose person.” Dazai internally flinched at the word comatose, though he made sure not to show it.

“You assume I care enough. I don’t visit him because I simply don’t care.”

Yosano snorted out a laugh, giving Dazai a pitiful look. “If you care so little then why didn’t you let him drown? Then he would have been out of your life forever.” Dazai gave the slightest hint of a pause, before collecting himself once again.

“If I’m the one to kill Chuuya, I want him to be completely conscious for it, not under the influence of a moody vampire’s ability,” Dazai said cheerfully. “It was a matter of pride, not emotion.” The words were bitter in his mouth, they reminded him far too much of his days in the Port Mafia. But he wasn’t in a position to admit anything else, not to himself and especially not to Yosano. So he let the words lay there, dead in the water. Yosano let the subject drop, but Dazai found himself suddenly unable to focus on his work.

Hi! I loved your "no return" writing! I loved trying to guess who the crush was the first time i read it (ive read it a few times and i didnt get that it was the ada the first time around, i thought it was ango with the line: if only you had his ability).

I kind of feel bad for the reader, I also wouldn't be able to take back a confession, especially if the other person took it to heart, I'd probably wait a bit before breaking up. I have a feeling Dazai knew it wasn't for him (knowing him, and the line: deceptive bashfulness) but he wasn't going to let the opportunity go to waste. Also, knowing how childish Ranpo can be, I dont think he would just give up on the reader, with him being confident they liked each other.

during the first draft of no return, the crush was supposed to be actually chuuya… but then i thought, ‘how drunk can u be 2 mistake chuuya and dazai as the same man?!!’ (specially when it comes to their hair and height) so turned down the idea of crush!chuuya. it was supposed to be set in PM, which means tachihara hands you the alcoholic drink instead of tanizaki. (in the early early early writing, i wrote that tachihara also liked reader, honestly, i didnt even know what was going through my mind.)

ur so right anon, ranpo is way too childish to give up on reader, hed probably put two and two together and find out that reader falsely confessed. and from this point on, i dont even know what he’d do hehe :3 maybe he’d be clingy? huffy? more childish? ranpo is so hard to comprehend considering that he’s a genius and all haha

though, in the original manhwa (a false confession) no return took a whole lot inspiration of, the ‘ranpo’ or the ‘crush�� (elviniraz) actually offers the mc to have an affair with him oh my god

its kinda in a rework right now since its so old and my understandings of the characters have changed since then, but essentially most of the characters die somehow relevant to canon. i haven't decided each point of death yet. i know chuuya ends up dying when the sheep turn against him, but i'm still working out the rest. i want dazai's to be after the mimic arc, but i have to figure out how to do that without kind of going back on his character, if that makes sense? kunikida doesn't die until much later, my thought was when he's saving aya. that one i'm sure of. the rest are pretty up in the air.

of course, dead at different times impacts characters' arcs and interactions as well. like how this would be a chuuya that never met the flags, and so on. this is a very, very old au though, made before stormbringer existed.

there's a concept of, in heaven, angels can choose to relax and be at peace in heaven, to become guardian angels, or to guard the border between heaven and hell. kunikida, of course, chooses to become a guardian angel. he looks over those still alive in the ada for the most part (ranpo, yosano, kenji, the tanizakis, fukuzawa... thats who i have there for now.)

fallen angels aren't welcome in either heaven or hell, and are kind of banished to idly manipulating the mortal realm. angels and demons have free passage between their respective domains and the mortal realm. those in the afterlife generally can't be seen by mortals, and in the mortal plane are more like ghosts--they can manipulate things to a certain degree, but can't really directly interact with anyone.

fallen angels lose their status in heaven by breaking too many rules and etc, too much consorting with demons, all kinds of things. they can gain back favor in heaven by influencing enough good in the mortal plane. chuuya, i have as a fallen angel that regularly regains and then loses his favor with heaven, so he's kind of in and out of the place. he has fun with it.

the mortal plane kind of becomes a place for angels, demons, fallen angels, and to a lesser extent mortals, can all mingle. some organizations on the mortal plane "know" this and are known to try to garner favor with the paramortal planes to try to influence their victories and such. so the ada & port mafia & etc can still kind of continue conflicts on the other side. its quite entertaining.

there's also those caught in limbo, they're the true ghosts, banished to be unseen in the mortal plane but cannot ever hope to have access to either heaven or hell.

atsushi is an angel, akutagawa is a demon. kyusaku my dear baby child is in limbo. i've been toying with the idea of putting oda in limbo as well. i like the idea of dazai being an angel, but he shouldn't be. we're not sure how he got there, but he is. there's more but as i said, its under some really heavy revamp.

i literally NEVER have ideas for soft soukoku even though it's my favourite thing to read in bsd fics bc alas dazai and chuuya are Like That and don't know how to be normal, but like what if chuuya struggles to sleep bc of his ability? what if it's normally manageable but some big event is giving him nightmares? what if when he has these nightmares, his ability automatically goes haywire and he winds up spending a fortune on repairs for everything he keeps breaking in his room? what if after a few days of sleeplessness he's finally out of it enough to genuinely consider asking dazai for help? what if dazai agrees to use no longer human while chuuya sleeps as a JOKE bc 'awww if you're missing me you can just say so~' but dazai finds it helps with his insomnia just as much? what if chuuya waits for the humiliation he knows is going to come from dazai telling everyone about his moment of weakness, waits for dazai to make him regret it, but it never comes? what if that fragile trust between them that got destroyed when dazai left flickers back to life again in these moments when it's just them in the darkness? what if it becomes a mutual agreement, a very reluctant 'this helps both of us' that neither of them are happy about that slowly grows into something more? something they begin to like? something they perhaps even look forward to? what if-
