We got a new artist for the OMW event! On one hand HALLELUJAH! On the other hand.... I have no clue who these people are supposed to be in the preview because every artist draws people differently.

I know the lady with the glasses is Maxine's mom. The kids are obviously Jai, Irey and Maxine. But everyone else?? Mr. Terrific and Animal Man are there. But who is the blonde guy in the back? And the redhead and the woman? Is this Roy and Jade?!?! Or is it Roy and Donna? Or Hartley and ....?

Crystal Hartley

Place of Birth: outskirts of Tucson, AZ

Early Life

Crystal was born into a nomad family. She was quickly taught how to steal, hack technology, hot-wire cars, shoot guns etc. As nomads, her gang was based on loyalty, family and rejection of a modern life. Many important people in the gang were veterans or witnesses of corporate wars, so Crystal's upbringing was very anti-establishment, sometimes based on live-cases during the jobs, where they would often witness what megacorps are capable of.

Her parents played a big role in her development. She owes her athletics, combat skills and technical abilities to her dad, while her mom, as a skilled sniper and netrunner, taught her basics of hacking and stealth. Her mom was disappointed with her lack of commitment to netrunning, leaving her with just some basic skills to compliment her commendable combat skills, rather than smart ways to solve her problems completely and sometimes even without the bloodshed.

Friends

She made many friends in the gang, but being an introvert, she mostly spent time with Harry and Rainer - guys around her age who were also born into the family. Later, Rainer started dating a girl named Jade, who was a welcome addition to their squad.

They had this ritual, where on almost every friday night they would sneak into restricted areas in the outskirts of cities near their camp. The four of them would then find themselves a nice viewpoint to spend the time on, drink, talk about anything and look at the city lights for a better part of the night. If the place was owned by a big corporation (which usually was the case) and they were feeling mischievous, they would often end up vandalizing the place and mess with the equipment on their way out.

Over time, the crew became quite notorious among the state authorities. They were arrested multiple times for vandalism, hacking industrial equipment and probably everything that could come off as malicious mischief. With age and more responsibilities in the gang, they stopped being as problematic, Crystal included. Usually, they were being let go with a slap on the wrist anyway, due to local sheriff being in debt to their gang.

Changes and differences

As years passed, younger blood naturally took over the leadership. Motivations in the gang were changing over time. They have become more open to outsiders and have started taking a wider range of jobs to ensure that no-one on the inside struggles financially.

Crystal was high enough in hierarchy for her voice to greatly matter during any voting that might've happened. However with time, feuds between her and the new leader - Section - began. Her approach to the nomad life was much more conventional; she didn't like how many untrustworthy people they were working with as of late. While deals that happened seemed necessary to keep them afloat, there were times where they would all come to regret their choices in partners or clients. That didn't stop the influx of new members that, to Crystal, weren't checked well enough. She started perceiving the camp as a crackhouse where anyone could join, hurt people she had known since her childhood and leave.

Constant disagreements with the leadership led her group of friends to lose any importance to their vote. Following Crystal's heated argument with Section's new right-hand man, Troy, during which she almost killed him, Harry revealed his plan to convince the group to leave the family together. Torn between the loyalty to the family and what's clearly the best for her and her friends, Crystal didn't want to talk about it. Unbeknownst to her, Jade was already on board, leaving only her and Rainer to convince.

They would have many discussions about it, and Harry and Jade would finally convince the stubborn duo to leave "when the time's right".

Turning Point

In August 2076, the gang struck a deal with a Militech representative through Troy's connections. The job was to retrieve a truck full of high-value weapons from some no-name group of four people that presumably stole it. When Crystal, Rainer, Harry, Thalia (a fellow trusted nomad), and two shady recruits she barely knew, reached the destination, the compound turned out to be empty.

While they were making sure the place is deserted, a rival gang sneaked up in pack of about twenty people. Before they noticed, Harry got shot in the head, leaving Crystal stunned. Rainer pushed her into cover and the firefight ensued. The gang managed to take out a few adversaries and started preparing their escape. Thalia ran up to the truck, their initial objective, with the rest providing covering fire, and gave the gang a sign to sneak out. They knew there was no way they're getting out with the truck, so she began setting up the charges to divert the attention away from the rest. With most of the attackers now focused on the truck, the remaining four almost managed to get to their car, when suddenly Rainer got shot in the chest with a high-caliber round. While trying to get him to the car, one of the crooked newbies got shot dead. They would all end up dead if it wasn't for wounded Thalia prematurely blowing up the truck, diverting attention once again and killing some of them, and presumably herself in the process.

As Crystal managed to lose the heat and arrive with only two people from her group, she screamed for Jade and their medic to come and take care of Rainer. In an uncontrolled fury, she approached Section and shot his newly promoted right-hand man in the head, possibly destroying any chance of reasoning with the leadership. Suddenly she was held at multiple gunpoints.

Crystal tried to convince the leader, that they were set up and that they should've never trusted Troy. Section tried to shift the blame back on her, assuming she had let herself be followed to the truck. All her explaining fell on deaf ears. Section, visibly stressed about Troy and the truck, wouldn't believe her after she killed the only person that could contradict her. He didn't care about Thalia, Harry or Rainer. His biggest concern was a hole in security that Crystal had just pointed out and whatever consequences the family might face for botching the job. He cut the conversation short, giving her an ultimatum - either she leaves the family willingly or dies. To him, she was an adversary for quite some time before, and everything that happened today finally gave him a good reason to get rid of her and focus on what's next.

She sensed someone behind her. It was the remaining newbie they were on the job with, pointing his gun at her. She felt like there's no reason to convince the leadership or anyone that she's right. At this point she wasn't sure if she was right about anything anymore. She felt that the only remaining option is to leave. She looked at her parents one more time. They were among the crowd, looking worried, shocked. She slightly nodded at them and started walking towards the car, wondering if she'll get shot in the back.

With tears in her eyes, driving as fast as she possibly could, she drove past a few motels to find the most rundown one to spend the night in, scared that someone will find her and kill her. During the first night, her dad reached out to her through the holo, advising her to leave Arizona for good, as there were many people in the gang that wanted her dead. He offered a meetup on next day to see her one more time and bring her some stuff that would make it easier for her to travel.

Both her mom and dad were there, they gave her clothes and ammunition and said their final goodbyes. They vowed to find each other when she settles. They assured her that they were leaving the family and would make sure that Jade and Rainer do the same.

Wandering through the deserts

Crystal spent a lot of time aimlessly wandering through deserts of the Badlands - driving from one motel to the next. Thinking about what happened the day she left her gang; if her parents and friends left after her, or if she made the right assumption about the setup. As she made her way through Utah and Nevada, she started doubting the validity of her actions in the gang since the leadership changed. She tried to convince herself that everything she did was for the gang and her chooms, but as the time passed, the memory of her last day as a nomad became more and more haunting. She knew that her fury got the better of her and that she shouldn't have killed Troy. There were better ways to go about that, right? Of all things, she kept coming back to their plans to leave the family, and how all of it could be avoided, if she and Rainer weren't so stubborn.

For months she lived from one gig to another, doing anything to pass the time and stop thinking about that day, even if for only a while. She had hit the rock bottom, feeling like she lost her purpose. All she did through 26 years of her life was for the community she was brought up in. Now she had no one to turn to, and no destination in sight.

Destination: Night City

She was very aware of her constantly worsening emotional state. Feeling like she's about to lose the will to keep going, she knew it's either this slow emotional decline, presumably leading to her death, or a complete 180 and taking chance at life in the city. She chose the latter - that's what Harry would've wanted. Finally, after eight months of living in a sandy purgatory, a fresh start - whatever happens, happens. She got up and left the motel she overstayed her welcome in. Her new destination: Night City.

She didn't know how long she'll last, but she had to try. After all, that was their plan - to break out and start a completely different life. She had more than enough eddies to move there, amassed on the road, by grinding too many gigs for her own good.

Her last day on the road, she stopped at a nearby motel and rented a room for an hour. She immediately went to the bathroom, with new clothes and two colors of hair dye in her hands - all bought the day before, at the gas station in the middle of nowhere.

The once dreaded city life felt like the only thing that could save her. It was all or nothing.

honestly the first time I saw them interact I was like Hartley is a jaded lover and nobody can tell me otherwise, the way they play off of each other is phenomenal

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Tom Cavanagh and Andy Mientus have a great chemistry and Eobard and Hartley are both toxic aholes (affectionate) also Hartley is absolutely a reflection of Eobard in personality (your ex lover broke your heart and ruined your life? ruin his life back!) and I'm such a sucker for that

honestly probably not with this one lol I just think they're neat and I want to smush them together like Barbie dolls

Unfinished Holiday Story

Hi! So. I never finished this story I had but I might later. It’s a Holiday fanfic, so feel free to let me know if I should continue it!

The speaker is playing a lot of Holiday songs throughout the apartment.

Roy is pretending to lead Lian in a dance, but the father-daughter duo were laughing too hard to focus. Jade is smiling but trying not to.

Dick and Kory are teaching Damian how to build a gingerbread house while baby Mar’i smiles and laughs.

Hartley and Linda are attempting to stop Jai from blowing up the kitchen as they all make cookies for Santa.

Irey and Cerdian are helping Donna and Garth decorate the Christmas tree. Robbie was helping, too, but he needs to learn how to control his strength. Due to that, he has more of the stronger decorations.

Wally was just happy to sit on the couch with Wade, watching his son’s eyes light up every once and a while. He sat somewhat away from Jade, giving her space.

Once the song stopped, Roy let Lian go with a kiss on her head.

Lian went over and helped Donna and the kids decorate the tree.

Roy went to Dick and Kory at the table. Mar’i laughed as he approached.

“They’re so full of love.” Wally heard Jade whisper.

“They are.” Wally answered, even though it was not a question.

He doesn’t interact with Jade much. Wally doesn’t know where she falls on being a good person but he knows she loves Lian and Roy.

“It’s not a bad thing. It’s just…” She trails off.

“New?” Wally attempts to finish.

Jade nods.

Wally understands. When he was living with his a parents, holiday time were a time for his parents to complain about the lack of money and “cheer” and him—

“Yeah.” Is all Wally says.

Jade nods again.

It was the only time this year that they could all meet. It’s two weeks before Christmas. They were all going to be busy, but they tried to make it a tradition, even when they were kids.

This time, it’s happier, because the kids are here.

Linda, Jai, and Hartley come out of the kitchen and Linda happily sits beside Wally. Jai goes to the gingerbread table. Hartley sets up the movie.

Hartley didn’t have anything to do today. He’s getting to see his sister later this week, who’s on break from university—and because she’s 18, she doesn’t need their parents’ permission.

Hartley has been smiling more recently.

Wally is freaking out a bit because he and Linda still don’t have the perfect gift for their kids—at least Jai and Irey.

Linda turns to him and squeezes his shoulder in comfort.

He turns to kiss her quickly, thankful for her always.

A while later, the gingerbread houses and the tree are set up.

The movie begins.
