The jaguarundi is a relatively secretive species of medium-sized cat, native to the Americas. In many ways it resembles a large mustelid, but its closest relative is the cougar. It lives alone or occasionally in pairs in a large home range, and more often hunts in the day than other sympatric cats like ocelots. ©SilverSpot Productions

Jaguarundi

The Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) is a species of cat found in North, Central and South America. The jaguarundi has 2 main colour morphs: dark gray-brown, and a brighter rust/orange variation, though there is much variation in colour within these categories, and melanistic individuals have also been observed. Both morphs represent the same species, and kittens of either morph can both be born in the same litter, but orange morphs tend to be more common in dry, open areas. (x, x)

- The RainWing Kingdom in horst has a democratic election system and Jaguarundi’s position is more akin to head of government than an absolute power

- Jaguarundi is brown both because of her muted personality and an incentive to remain ‘visually impartial’ in matters of governance 

- her gold fangs are replacements for her actual fangs, which she lost as a dragonet 

- she is named after one of my fabourite animals :] 

- Lotus is a Sea/Rain hybrid, Bat is a Night/Rain hybrid and Python is just straight up RainWing. none of them have any roles in governance they’re all doing their own thang

Just wanted to post this compilation I did of some of the little faces I drew the past month :>

I've been quite busy with work and commissions, so I haven't been able to write descriptions for drawings i made in the meantime, but i'll get to it soon!!

I just finished writing a paper for my evolution class on felid craniodental morphology, and it feels like that paper took as long to write as it did for the Felidae family to evolve. While writing I was reminded of your amazing esoteric biology jokes, so I stopped by to ask: Do you have any extremely niche Felidae memes that you've made? (also, I learned today that the sand cat's scientific name is Felis margarita, and it brings me immense joy for some reason. I am now picturing a sand cat lapping up a margarita with its little tongue.)

Sounds like an interesting paper, congrats on getting it done! I’m thrilled to know someone other than myself appreciates the esoteric biology jokes. I don’t know about extremely niche but I did make this one for a friend in the big cat world.

And now thanks to you I’m going to think about sand cats whenever I have a margarita. I love it! What an excellent fun fact and even better mental image
