The numbers here are not being compared in a 1 to 1 way. Japan is approximately the same land area as California, but with 4 times the population. (which actually makes their low murder rate MORE impressive) All of Japan's per-capita statistics regarding homicide, homelessness and food security are better than the US, but these do not appear to be the correct numbers to compare, as they are cohort totals, not per-capita or percentages.
