‘The shock of spilling out from Delhi airport into the cow-lined streets was incredible. I fell immediately in love with the beauty of the doe-eyed white cows and the noisy yellow taxis that swerved to avoid them. The visual impact of everything raining down on me at once was an impression I tucked away, ready to bring alive when I began writing my first story, Asha and the Spirit Bird. I wanted to transport my readers into the drama of her world.
In Delhi, once the heat of the day had relented, we quickly discovered the best dhabba (street food) stalls. My memories of batter splashed into hot oil to make the wonderfully fragrant pakora went into the mouthwatering food scenes in that book and my second, Tamarind and the Star of Ishta.’ - Jasbinder Bilan

Asha and the Spirit Bird by Jasbinder Bilan
*Whistles long and low*...This book has seriously won a lot of prestigious awards by exciting debut author, Jasbinder Bilan. I mean, dang, that front cover of this book is just gorgeous for starters - beautifully illustrated in eye-catching, vibrant colours. It’s definitely a book that’s been in my eye line for many months and with spending more time at home lately, I wanted to take my time with it and savour reading every page.
Asha lives in the foothills of the Himalayas with her family and best friend, Jeevan. Asha’s father works away from home, but when she finds out that there’s been no word from him, or any money sent, for several months she immediately knows that something is wrong. With the family now owing some big debts, she decides to take action and embarks on a long and difficult journey with Jeevan across India to find her father and bring him home. And with her Nanajee - the spirit bird of her grandmother - along side her, hope is never far away. But will it be enough?
This is a stunningly written book with lyrical language which oozes many rich, detailed descriptions that plonk you right into the story and close to Asha. This book is a brilliant insight into Indian culture and the Hindu faith, which is sadly, usually so absent in middle grade children’s fiction. Asha and the Spirit Bird truly is a magical, spiritual story that shows us both the good and bad of human nature. And Asha’s brave perseverance makes her a formidable and inspiring hero to all readers.
As an aside, I was ecstatic to find out recently that Bilan’s next book, Tamarind And The Star Of Ishta, comes out on 3rd September (MY BIRTHDAY) this year. I've no doubt that this new book will be as breathtaking as the last and I’ll be hauled up on my sofa, engrossed, once more!
