Court case for the jokers punishment
So the joker got an infection and eventually kicked the bucket
Bruce is nutral if a little sad
Jason is pissed he couldn't kill him
And all of the other batfam are releived that the jokers not out and about anymore, and atleast the family fight on the joker ends
During a family meeting to discuss the jokers death a Lazarus pit opened up and a...butler? Servent? Footman? Who knowes! someone in a suit...
Oh and he was floating off the ground and translucent
The batfam were on high alert and instant attack mode, damian tried to stab the guy and ended up tumbling through him
Bruce walked up and intended to intimidate him, but the guy walked through him...and right for jason
:you are jason todd, correct
:why do'you care
:you are the jason todd killed by the joker and reserected by currupted ectoplasm, correct
:my death is none of your business!
:mr todd, as a victem of the joker you are entiteled to a say in the jokers punishment
The whole room got quiet, jason was freaking out but...also calm. The pit was reacting to this guy like...comradery? Companionship? It wasent negative but not positive either
Bruce was still trying to intimidate the guy into giving them answers
Tim and dick were just staring
and damian was making another swing with his sword
:w-what do you mean, jokers punishment ???
The guy pulled out a seat and told everyone to sit, he pulled out a file and put it in front of jason, bruce went to grab it but the guy slapped his hand away
:only mr todd and trusted members of the ghost kings high court may read it
That was the first time he acknowledged bruce and he didnt like being ignored, jason couldn't hold in his chuckle at B getting frustrated
Slowly jason picked up the file and began to read, the paper on the top was a basic file of jason todd before he died, age,school, adoption date, birth place basic things though the thing that stood out was the words at the bottom
Cause of death: joker
Following it was the date, time, wepon and location of his death
He flipped to the next page and saw a similar file to robin, the day he started training, his first day out, how he met bruce, an analysis of his fighting gear from that time, his patrol rout
And at the bottom was the same thing with the same information
Cause of death: joker
Jason was starting to worry why he wasent freaking out about this file he was kinda a numb giddy if that made sense, the batfam were all looking at him expectingly and the butler guy was just watching him
:why are you watching me??
: oh, you see, some ghosts tend to...loose themselves a bit when confronted with...sensitive information, I'm just making sure you wont panic
That got a look from dick and tim, bruce just "hmm"ed and damian was still glaring at the guy
Jason turned to the next page and saw another thing like the last pages, except this one was much more recent, age, height, the day he came back to the public eye,
But there was alot more concerning writing
Death date, date of reserection, level of corruption, death age, core growth, manifested abilities
Jason gave a look to the guy but didnt freak out, though everyone at the table saw the look and was starting to get concerned, jason didnt know what to make of the information let along what it ment
He turned the page and saw one for red hood, age, number of wepons, occupation, date he made his davew, number of times he tried to kill the joker, ect;
Jason tried to ignore all the things that stood out and gave him a sinking feeling and the pit had an...odd reaction
He flipped a page and rather than another log thing there were pictures, mostly id photos and things accessible to the public, but there were also alot of photos that looked like tim took them when he was playing watchdog
He flipped the page and read the following:
You jason todd, due to the crimes and atrocities commiced to you by john, kur aka:the joker
One week after the jokers death he will be tryed and condemed for his actions, and dispite the unusual circumstances surounsing your existence you are entiteled to a say in how the joker is punished
Due to your previous and current occupation you have much more sway over the outcome of the trial then most of his other victmes though they will still have their say
You will not be forced to attend any trial or judgement, as this selecting processes is voluntary and you may reject having any involvement in the case of the jokers soul, condemnation or punishment
And dew to your unique standing with parties that for whatever reason (the big bad bat, you know who) may want to joker to get a lighter sentence than diserved the batman will not have nor get any power or say over the conditions of the joker. he will not have any say and you do not have to lisen to him on any matters concerning this trial
I thank you for your time and any question you may have berry( the ghost who delivered this to you) will answer any and all questions
High king of the infinet realms: phantom
P.S: most people in the infinite realmes kinda have a grudge against the batman so don't be shocked if berry dose something to him
Jason closed the file, handed it back to berry and just...sat there for a good 5 minutes
:mr todd do you have any questions you need answering
l:... I've been out of the loop d'ya think you could...give the the details of...whatevers going on...and what court trial for the jokers soul?
:ah i can do that mr todd.
So 24 hours ago the joker passed away, dew to the ambient ectoplasm in gothem he bacame a ghost in the infinite realms
At jasons confused look he said he'd explain later
:the high king of the infinet realms immediately had his soul captured and he is currently waiting for his trial
The joker has killed alot of people in the infinite realms and they want their pound of fleash, and king phantom is beyond willing to give it to them
So anyone willing is going to his trial next week to condem him
You were killed by the joker and are under unique circumstances, in fact it was up in the air weather to let you have a say or not, but you were dead and thus entitled to a say in his punishment
Because you fought the joker and died to protect gothem you have a larger sway over the outcome than most
:... so what your saying is... i can fuck over the joker even when hes dead?
:yes
:hhahaha hell yeah!!!
Jason jumped up and started laughing like a lunitic, now it made sence why the pit was giddy, it knew he'd finally get his pound of fleash and B couldn't do shit!!!
Batman: that cant be fair
: whyever not
: he's already dead just let him rest
:after all the things he's done...never
: he's already been punished leave him be
That was the wrong thing to say as berry jumped out of the chair, knocking it over and jamming the table into the rest of the batfams ribs
:HES BEEN PUNISHED, WHAT WAY HAS HE BEEN PUNISHED
:he die-
:WE ALL DIED!! HE'S DIED, I'VE DIED, HELL YOU'VE DIED! That dose not excuse his crimes! Besids! What do you think he'd do in the infinite realms! Think you egotistical furrie a madman with no punishment, developing powers and access to multiple universes! Its a disaster waiting to happn you idiot
:it's still unfair, i will stop it
: how moron! you have no say in this you are naither a victme or a trusted member of the high kings court, you have no power
:then I'll talk to this king
:*snort* sure you will...mr todd do you have anymore questions?
Jasons giddiness froze at being put on the spot so suddenly he froze mid-cackle and had to stand properly before he answered berrys question
J: uhh... how to i get to the trial, thing on the right time
: a servent will escourt you,AND ONLY YOU, to the event. Good day and fuck you!!
Berry opened a portal, stepped through and gave bruce the finger
Everyone kinda stared at where the portal was, jason was the one to break the silence by giggling
: hahaha i still get to fuck over the joker and, for once, you can't stop me, later you egotistical furrie
Jason ran to his bike and floored it out of the batcave, he has to plan

what's funny about that last post is that bruce could have also done the same thing instead of dressing up as a bat. like. i really don't think it makes bruce look good to say he's been waiting for someone to fix gotham's justice system when he's been sitting on the resources all this time to do that himself lol.
That joke post does implies that, if you think about it. Like when your dad wanted to play in a band but somehow you're ending up going to the musical school as a part of your teenage rebellion.
Though it's not completely fair to say that Bruce didn't do anything for systematic changes in Gotham. There's all his charity work, and Wayne Industries employing ex-cons or even just criminals that they're in it for some way to make ends meet, things like that. I remember seeing recently a panel where he employed a wannabe robber as a receptionist.
But yes, it's far from his primary focus. Both due to the limitation of the medium (although Green Arrow does better on that, people say), and his own character. He's not not doing it to make sure the city always needs Batman, though, but rather Batman takes too much time from him for him to dedicate his life and all of his money to ensuring successful institutional and social reforms in Gotham. And he can't stop being Batman until there's no need for him, which - won't happen until there's no successful institutional reforms etc.
It also funny to me that the one time where Bruce put significant effort as Bruce Wayne to lobby for Gotham, city still ended up No Man's Land-ed. So. Like. Even if he stopped Batman-ing, what's the probability that he doesn't fail anyway? Everyone has their limitations.
What really funny to me is when people want Jason to be a proponent of restorative justice. It's not that it's not possible or even not something I would love to read. But come on. Cass is right here. She literally jailbreaked a guy on a death row. Where's your Cass as a political activist fanons?
In the situation where Jason tries to get Joker's ass legally executed, Cass being the one who goes against him - because nobody else would, not even Bruce (not because he's okay with death sentencing, but because it's Joker, and it's Jason) - would be a hell of a story. She is the ultimate fighter. But this is so out of her usual battlefield! And the public opinion supports Jason. So you can get a nice little man vs society conflict here. I don't remember if Cass had one like that.
As for Jason, you have a nice man vs self. Like, Jason can't just. Show up and sue Joker and it ends up with Joker killed by State. The system already has death as capital punishment but Joker escaped it so far. Was there no brave lawyer or DA to try to get him the chair? So what does he need to do to get the corrupt system to do what he wants or Gotham, in his opinion, needs. Is it even possible for the corrupt and ineffective system to do what's best for the citizens? Is it possible to use/become a part of the corrupt system - even if your purpose is noble - and not to become corrupt yourself?
Anyway, it's just a thought.

Stepping Stones - Chapter 1
Summary: Y/N and Arthur share a delightful life, one that isn’t perfect but wholly theirs. When his struggles take a serious turn, she's surprised by the toll it exacts. Though the steps they'll have to take aren't easy, walking them together makes all the difference.
Warnings: Angst, Swearing, Referenced self-harm, Severe struggles with mental illness
Words: 3,589
A/N: This novella has been bouncing around in my head since last September. At first, I was hesitant to write it, unsure of how the subject matter would be received. But inspiration sparked last month, so I decided to take the leap. 🙂 Special thanks to @sweet-nothings04 for beta-ing and helping me get the summary right! Also thanks to my colleague Jane the Dame, who spent many years working at a state institution in the 1980s, for answering my questions. 💜
If you have any thoughts or questions, please comment, feel free to message me, or send me an ask! I'm still working on requests and Way Back Home!
Tumblr media
The halcyon summer of 1988 was one of Y/N's favorites, filled with good news and great fun. Her oldest nephew, Jason, had been awarded a baseball scholarship to the University of Missouri, where he hoped to study business administration, following in his father's footsteps. In congratulations, she and Arthur had sent enough money to cover textbooks and one of those new graphing calculators. WXYZ ran a contest for The Main Ingredient tickets, and by being the ninth caller on a Wednesday afternoon, Arthur won two nosebleed seats. They'd taken a weekend trip to a bed & breakfast in the Catskills, and spent far more hours in bed than having breakfast.
There were professional achievements, too. Dube & Ellis merged with Flat & Flat Lawyers to become Dube, Ellis, & Flat. (It was fortunate they'd dropped the second "Flat;" her business cards wouldn't've fit in her billfold, otherwise.) The firm now specialized in labor and family cases, and luckily, she had extensive experience with each. After a quick interview process, her title was bumped to senior paralegal, an advancement that added the duties of interviewing witnesses and assisting less experienced staff.
Arthur's work seemed to be going well, too. The season was his favorite, what with the easy availability of gigs and breaks from rain and cold, and his mood since May had been boundless. Most mornings he'd head out to dance and do magic on a corner near Amusement Mile, even if he had an event to work later on. He'd filled notebook after notebook, periodically calling her up at the office to share a joke that couldn't wait. Walks overflowed with animated assertions that he'd get his name on Gotham's biggest marquees, that he'd fill the largest clubs, that it was only a matter of time before everyone recognized his talent.
While his self-confidence had increased, evidenced by knowing grins and occasional swagger, glimmers of arrogance were rare. It struck her as uncharacteristic, but she enjoyed the way it fit him, like the tailored seams of a brand-new suit. Though his ideas were a little grandiose, not quite realistic, the determination behind his assertions made her smile. Success in all aspects of his life, whether it be performing, happiness in his own skin, or managing his symptoms, were goals they shared. Vital elements she cherished, that made their partnership thrive.
As the last tendrils of August heat gave way to the cool breezes of late September, a shift pricked her perception. He'd had rough patches since they'd gotten together - a month when he hadn't felt up to intimacy, a week when he'd stayed in, a day when he'd lain morose in bed - and they'd always gotten through. The third night she went to bed alone, however, she began to sense this was different.
He still practiced his material, went through the motions of bathing his face in white, blue, and red to go spread joy to a kid. He functioned. But she'd find him on the sofa in the same position she'd left him the night before. The lights in the apartment blazed, whether it was 2:00 AM or 2:00 PM, like he was trying to chase back shadows visible only to him. Retreats to his writing nook increased, stretching on and on. She brought him coffee when she thought he was running low, gave his neck a quick massage, ensured he knew she was there for him. Moments of loneliness seeped into her soul, but she did her best to ignore them. Journaling had helped Arthur cope for as long as she'd known him. Though she ached for him to confide in her, she believed respecting his space was the right thing to do.
But she reported the changes to Dr. Ludlow, stated she suspected he was slipping.
"Continue to monitor him," Dr. Ludlow said, "and update me with any symptoms that are clearly excessive."
Frustration caused Y/N to stare at the receiver before hanging up. How was she supposed to judge what was "clearly excessive" versus what was "mildly excessive" when all of it troubled her? She tried to think back to the books she'd read after Arthur's appearance on Live! With Murray Franklin, and quickly concluded she was due for a re-read.
When the date night she'd crafted went awry, she finally resolved to investigate. Candles burned and his favorite LP played, yet his beloved dish of beef stroganoff and egg noodles lay untouched. He'd barely spoken, tossing her a spare nod every so often. Failing to fill the void of conversation by herself unnerved her. His thumb traced the edge of the table. She rested her chin on her knuckles. "You haven't been eating much," she said. "Do you want to try something new?"
"No."
"All right. But we could look through some of your cookbooks. Maybe we'll find an old favorite." She paused to ponder her words, not wanting to let on that it was getting more difficult to leave him alone for eight hours a day. "You're not yourself. Not lately."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I see you and talk to you, but it's like you're not there half the time. You're not sleeping, you're tenser than when we met." She covered his hand with hers and forced a slight grin. "I don't know where that gorgeous head of yours is. I'd like to."
On a curt huff, he shook his head. "No, you wouldn't." He picked up his fork to poke at a puddle of sauce and proceeded to lie to her for the first time she could remember. "I don't want you worrying about me. I'm fine. I'll be fine."
The obvious untruth in his answer and his stubborn refusal to admit he was struggling evoked an earlier period of her life. The one in which her father had forgotten his patients' appointments and begun to lose vocabulary, resorting to describing diagnoses instead of naming them. Even with her mother, sister, and herself pushing him to get checked out, the normally open man brushed off their concerns like they were a brood of anxious hens. Y/N's worry morphed into anger, a burning coal in her chest. She flinched and tossed her napkin on the table, buttoned her lip before she confronted him further and said something she'd regret. Grabbing her glass of wine, she excused herself and went out onto the fire escape. Breathed deeply and leaned on the railing until he followed to ask what she wanted to watch.
But less than four days later, she arrived home from work and her fears were validated.
She hung her purse at the door and scurried through the living room, having had to use the restroom since boarding the subway, thanks to an ill-timed cup of coffee. The wet footprints on the cream color carpet went unnoticed, superseded by a dull thumping emanating from behind the bathroom door. Bafflement halted her momentarily; misgivings compelled her to fling it open.
Clad in his briefs, soaked from head to toe, brown locks dripping, Arthur stood at the side of the tub, ramming his forehead against the shower door. Splinters shot through the reeded glass, a cracking sound Y/N would never be able to erase from her ears. Herky-jerky motions possessed his arms, disconnected, agitated. He kept at it. Hard. Harder.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Fear sparked her nerves. Of him, which made her feel awful, and for him, which induced an urge to fight off whatever his conditions were putting him through. The later won out. "Arthur, what the fuck?" she said. Then louder, taking a step towards him. "Arthur!"
Disregarding the possibility of unhinging him further, she grabbed him. Repeated his name until the slamming diminished to a resting of his temple on the door. His shoulders sagged, he panted. Blood formed on his forehead, a drop that expanded to a thin rivulet down his cheek, dribbling off his chin.
She sat him on the toilet, yanked the hand towel from the hanger beside the sink. "Arthur, what's wrong?" Hot water flowed from the faucet after thirteen agonizing seconds. She knelt before him, seized his chin as she wiped coppery flecks away, pressed the terrycloth to the fine cut below his hairline. "I don't know what to do." Shrugged, mumbling incoherently, he dropped his gaze to the floor and gave a smothered laugh. Her voice rose, louder than she intended, and she shook him by the shoulder. "Tell me what to do!"
As if seeing her for the first time, he blinked. The pain of realization crossed his face, tightened the lines at the corner of his eyes, the fine wrinkles around his mouth. With a shiver, he folded in on himself, pushing Y/N back and dropping his head between his knees. "Nothing seems to make a difference," he said.
Freaking out was in order. An honest-to-god, old fashioned case of hysteria. Instead, she willed herself to ignore the growing flames of panic, but she was powerless to stop her eyes from watering. She stood to retrieve his bath towel. Got him to stand, pulled off his underwear, draped it over the radiator. She patted his back, covered with goosebumps and cold, and wrapped the cloth about his waist. A million phrases went through her mind. Sentences full of comfort and solutions, sentences that felt ghastly in their emptiness. She chose the truth. "I'm going to call Dr. Ludlow and see what we can do. I'm not asking permission."
At first, he didn't react. No gestures of compliance, no scowl of defiance. But gradually he dared to meet her gaze, as if begging her not to give up on him, and began to dry himself with the clumsy coordination of a child. She managed a comforting smile, even as her heart split, and gave his bicep a tender squeeze.
~~~~~
Y/N waited in a small, corner room of Arkham State Hospital, which sat smack in the middle of McKean Island, set off from the rest of Gotham like a scapegoat expelled to the wilderness to pay for the city's sins.
Despite the asylum's measly fifteen floors, it dominated its space. Four separate beige buildings, each connected with a skybridge, loomed over the surrounding streets and train tracks. A watchtower sprung from the top of one wing, the one she assumed was for the criminally insane. Bars stretched across every window, even the one she currently peered out, and she lamented that most of what she'd seen so far of this medical facility felt equal parts institution and prison.
More study than workspace, Dr. Kellerman's office was far warmer than the facility's stately façade inferred. Between narrow bookshelves, poplar framed two bachelor's degrees from Gotham University, one in biology, one in psychiatry, alongside an MD degree from Hale, arranged in a circle on almond wallpaper. His license was up to date, renewed four months prior. A certificate for the Elizabeth Arkham Spirit of Medicine award hung in the middle, awarded for "thirty years of outstanding service to the citizens of Gotham." His apparent expertise quelled an ounce of Y/N's anxiousness; ruminating on Arthur preserved the rest.
The desk was wooden, like an old teacher's desk with drawers that no longer rolled smoothly, and pictures of what she assumed were a wife, children, and grandchildren cluttered one end. An Orator intercom speaker took up the other. A calendar pad covered the center, full of scribbles and appointments. And on the right, beside Dr. Kellerman's forearm, sat a doorstop he claimed was Arthur Fleck's file.
"Mrs. Fleck," Dr. Kellerman began. "Dr. Ludlow and I spoke briefly. She sent your husband's records over about an hour ago. Now, they haven't arrived yet, so I'm hoping you can give me a run down. He's been in therapy with her for...six years?" He flipped the folder open, pen poised between the first knuckles of his fingers.
"Seven next January." Y/N leaned forward, craned her neck to look at the top page. Reading upside down, she couldn't make out much more than the Department of Hospitals' twin-snake seal. "Before that, he was in treatment with the Department of Health."
"What was the reason for the change?"
"Budget cuts. The round before last," she said. Dr. Kellerman let out the sigh of one who'd heard that story too often. He indicated she should continue with a quick, but not unkind, wave. "He keeps a journal and takes three medications. Temazepam, fluoxetine, and an anti-psychotic." Frowning, she tried to picture the bottle of white tablets on the bureau in their bedroom, the blue typewriter ink on the label. "I'm sorry, I can't recall which one. It's been a long night."
That was an understatement. As soon as she'd gotten off the phone with Dr. Ludlow, Y/N dialed 911. Arthur and she had spent five hours waiting in Gotham General's emergency department, with him getting more agitated by the minute, only for the attending physician to state they weren't equipped to handle his case. A shot of sedative stuck Arthur's arm as they'd wheeled him into an ambulance for transport. Y/N caressed his cheek before they parted, pecked his slackened lips with the promise to see him soon.
"I'm sure it's all right here," said Dr. Kellerman. He tapped the stack of paperwork before him. "Any changes over the last few weeks? New or odd behaviors that set off your radar?"
She went through what she'd already reported to Dr. Ludlow, the ER staff, and the intake nurse she'd bribed to ensure Arthur got a private room. "Nothing I thought would end in this."
"How about stressors?"
"He had a bad night at the Smile Factory awhile back, a drunk heckler. Occupational hazard - Arthur's a stand-up, mostly works open-mic nights." She counted on her fingers, tried to catalogue everything in her mind. "An old client of mine passed away recently, but they'd only met once or twice."
"Have you been fighting?"
"Only about how worried I've been." Heat flushed up her shoulders and her neck, the scene of shattered glass and blood replaying over and over in her mind, an unwelcome horror film she should have foreseen. If she'd been more attentive, could she have stopped this? The suggestion tore her insides. She crossed her arms over her chest, a fractured shield against her burgeoning guilt. "Dr. Kellerman, he's goes through periods of depression and mania. But he's been doing so well. We had a wonderful summer together. I don't understand what's different now."
"Where the mind and spirit intersect is still a mystery. Medication can stop working. Incidents that would be minor to you or me can build and build until a relapse occurs. Even the changing of seasons, as you just described. Sometimes we can't pinpoint a cause." Dr. Kellerman's eyes narrowed, salt and pepper brows pulling together in concentration. "I'll be calling Dr. Ludlow tomorrow morning to discuss Mr. Fleck's case. Once we've determined an appropriate treatment plan and he signs a release form, I'll contact you. Let me share how a typical stay here wor-"
"Dr. Kellerman?" The intercom crackled to life. "You're needed in ward C."
He reached for the volume knob. "I'm in a meeting, Janet."
"I'm sorry, doctor, but it's a code grey."
"Be right down." He stood and straightened his corduroy suitcoat, then turned his attention back to Y/N. "The ward's charge nurse just had a baby and we were already short staffed." He stopped in the doorway and pointed to his right. "There's a coffee dispenser and vending machine down the hall. Avoid the tuna salad. I'll be back as soon as I can." Y/N listened to his footsteps hastening, fading, the squeak of far-off hinges echoing through the corridor, the slam of a metal door. Hunger and thirst eluded her. Swirling questions - how Arthur was doing, what clothing to bring him, how long he would have to stay - crowded out her needs.
Except for one: to know.
She'd sought to respect his privacy, be satisfied with what he was comfortable confiding. And he'd confided a lot: his history of being deemed a danger to himself, disassociation and hallucinations, his laminated card. But the file on Dr. Kellerman's desk taunted her, a temptation in coffee-stained manila. Maybe a glance would be all right. Just enough to get an idea of what had remedied him in the past so she could replicate it in the future. Just enough to understand him a little better. Just enough to soothe the all-too-familiar ache of helplessness. Scraping her chair forward, she reached to grab the expandable folder with both hands and situated it on her lap.
Its documents were sorted in order from newest to oldest, opposite from how she sorted files in her office. The Department of Hospitals form she'd spied earlier was a psychiatric report, blank besides Arthur's name and today's admission date: 9/27/1988. Experience with court ordered evaluations told her it would take at least two days for it to be completed. She'd have to keep digging.
After a quick peek over her shoulder, she flipped through a bundle of pages, bound by a large, black clamp. They appeared to be weekly reports from a Dr. Kane, notes stating Arthur had trouble spelling, maintaining eye contact, and didn't elaborate on his feelings other than to say he didn't want to feel bad. But he never missed his appointments, even if he didn't do much participating. "Major depressive disorder, suicidal ideation, uncontrollable laughing fits. Inconsistent with bringing journal." Those descriptions pained Y/N, but the rest constricted her throat with pride. "Consistently well-dressed, neat. Polite. Heavy smoker. Prefers butterscotch candies." She snorted lightly. Whoever this Dr. Kane was, she already liked her.
Beneath those notes, about a third of the way through the file, she came across Form-39274, which looked to be an application. The version name in the corner, "Rev. 01/1981," caught her attention; it must have been from his last hospitalization, a scant nine months before they'd become involved. Judging from the two empty hole punches at the top and lack of signature, pages were missing. She read on regardless, desperate to glean as much as she could. There were the usual demographic questions. Whether or not Arthur had ever been married (he hadn't), how many bedrooms were in the apartment (one), if he had a criminal record or unresolved federal or state tax liens - as if that would preclude his need for medical care. (He had neither.) He'd apparently worked up to sixty hours a week, a number of hours that rivalled hers, even when she'd worked for Shaw & Associates.
When she got to the section about his education, a weight dropped into her stomach, as heavy as the concrete bricks of this building. According to this, Arthur had quit school in the tenth grade. The same year his mother had been lobotomized. Y/N held her breath. This was why he'd never gotten invitations to class reunions, why he'd claimed to have forgotten his diploma at 8J and hadn't asked about a replacement, why he thought her "very smart" when, really, she considered herself happily average. The unfairness of the situation he'd been thrown into, the adult choices he'd had to make as an adolescent, tugged the thread tangling her ribs.
The man who'd completed the form had terrible handwriting, some of the worst she'd ever seen. All her practice deciphering affidavits and orders should've come in handy, but she could scarcely make out a sentence: "Laughing all the time." "I don't know - happy or what?" "I really don't understand it." Given this record, a record that denoted a mystery instead of a person, Arthur was lucky he'd escaped Penny's fate. She turned to the folder's final section, where pages yellowed and specks of mold bloomed.
An admissions photo stared back at her, perhaps twenty-years-old, black and white, the size of a recipe card. Happy to finally glimpse Arthur's earlier self, she brought it closer. His gaze was blank, averted from the camera, his full lips agape. Wisps of dark hair stuck out from behind his ears, his curls as unruly as when he'd try to slick them into submission for a special occasion. Her fingernail traced the round apple of his cheek, not yet sharpened by the chisel of age and hammer of life. He'd held such beauty in his youth, a beauty that had matured into the handsome man who held the power to steal her breath whenever he walked into the room.
Suddenly, a sob shuddered through her, down to her bones. This photograph wasn't a joyful memory. It existed because he'd struggled, isolated and weary, for nearly three decades. Longer than he, longer than anyone deserved. If her circumstances back in Boonville hadn't turned into a leaky hull, if she'd gotten to Gotham sooner, she would have made a difference. Sure, she might not have had much money, a newly divorced transplant finding her feet. But she could have done something.
She rolled her eyes at herself and put the photo back in its place. Closed the folder and dropped it on the desk. Shoulda, woulda, couldas wouldn't do either of them any good. She wasn't a savior and he didn't need saving. What he needed was for her to be here with her feet planted firmly in the present. In reality. She grabbed a tissue from her purse, determined to pull herself together before Dr. Kellerman returned.
(OC) Mike Milbury-ing the Islanders (An Alternate Reality)
(Previous parts of this series include: Don Cherry Drafts the Leafs, Tom Wilson-Proofing the Penguins, Dundon DIYs the Hurricanes, Re-Chiarelling the Oilers, Moneyballing the Sens, Covertly Tanking the Wild, and Frenchifying the Canadiens.)It was June 2006 when Charles Wang sat Mike Milbury down in his office."Michael, I think you know why you're here. Zdeno Chara. Roberto Luongo. Jason Spezza. Olli Jokinen. Todd Bertuzzi. Bryan McCabe. Michael, why are these players not on my team?""Chuck, you gotta understand I'm an active manager, a risk taker. Sometimes it looks bad, sure, but I'm gonna make this team a champion! I've just had some really awful luck - what are the odds that every player I trade away turns out to be a superstar?""Put your shoe back on Michael. I have given things a lot of thought, and I have decided that I am not firing you today. But I am very disappointed with how this team has developed. We need some stability. I am giving you one last chance to prove that you are ready and willing to build this team intelligently and not make us look like fools again. I am promoting your backup goaltender, Garth Snow, to assistant GM - he is a brilliant mind and I fear that another team will recognize this and steal him away. I have something for you: this is a 15-year contract I have written up for Rick DiPietro. I believe that he will be the best goalie in the league, and the backbone of this team for a long, long time. Please have him sign this, and we will proceed from there."Milbury took the stapled stack of papers, discreetly slipped his loafer back on, and rose from his seat. "You got it boss."As he walked out of the office and down the hall, Milbury read the contract. He suddenly understood how preoccupied Wang had been by the decision of whether or not to fire his general manager. It wasn't from the look in his eyes or the tone of his voice. It was from the fact that rather than Rick DiPietro, the contract in front of him had accidentally been addressed to Mike Milbury himself. A malevolent grin slowly crept over Milbury's face."You want stability you old son of a bitch?"~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The hockey world was astonished at the news that Mike Milbury, the man who had traded away seemingly half the players at the Turin Olympics, had been rewarded with an unprecedented fifteen-year contract by the New York Islanders. No one was more shocked than Wang himself. He immediately (but quietly) challenged its validity with the NHL's lawyers. Unfortunately, they had grown weary of Wang's incessant calls asking about things like 20-year contracts and paying contracts in commodity futures, and quickly ruled against him.His place in the Islanders' organization assured for the foreseeable future, Milbury got to work.Part II2006-07Determined not to make the same mistakes again, Milbury chooses not to trade his 1st round pick for Ryan Smyth. As a result, the Islanders miss the playoffs and pick 12th overall. The team selects D Ryan McDonagh.2007-08With the 10th overall pick, on the intel of their European scouts, the Islanders go off the board to select a small Swedish defenceman named D Erik Karlsson.2008-09By the summer of 2008, the Islanders are projected to finish near the bottom of the league with the underwhelming roster Milbury has constructed. Milbury is bristling with impatience: he misses the rush of being a 7th or 8th seed.The Islanders trade D Ryan McDonagh, their 2009 1st round pick (John Tavares), and a 2009 7th (Anders Lee) to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Vincent Lecavalier and Evgeny Artyukhin.They then resign Lecavalier to a 13 year $100 contract extension. Lecavalier isn't enough to keep the Isles out of the basement. However, they do notably draft C Ryan O'Reilly in the 2nd round and G Braden Holtby in the 3rd.2009-10Without a number 1 defenceman, and Milbury growing impatient with Karlsson's development, something must be done.The Islanders trade D Erik Karlsson, C Frans Nielsen, and RW PA Parenteau to the Calgary Flames for D Dion PhaneufSomehow this doesn't work, and the Isles still finish near the bottom of the NHL. The Islanders draft RW Nino Niederreiter and C Brock Nelson in the first round.2010-11The duo of Vincent Lecavalier and Kyle Okposo do their best but things remain grim on Long Island. Worse still, Rick DiPietro (who had been signed to a much more reasonable 14 year contract after the fiasco back in 2006) gets knocked out with a punch by Atlanta's Vezina trophy winning goaltender Brent Johnson in November and his career is suddenly over. They need a goalie for now and for the future, and they have only one way to get one: a trade.The Islanders trade RW Nino Niederreiter, C Ryan O'Reilly, G Braden Holtby, and a 2012 2nd (John Gibson) to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for G Steve Mason and C RJ UmbergerWith their prospect cupboard mostly empty, Milbury promises to Wang that he will not trade away the guy he takes in the 2011 first round. He proudly takes, on his scouts' advice, C Ryan Strome.2011-12All of these trades are starting to make Milbury look really silly again. The addition of Stamkos, Tavares, McDonagh, and Hedman to the Lightning has turned them into leading Stanley Cup contenders. Erik Karlsson is the leading candidate for the Norris trophy playing alongside Jay Bouwmeester. Even Ryan O'Reilly, who was an okay third-liner for the Isles, is suddenly tearing it up next to Rick Nash in Columbus. Meanwhile, Lecavalier and Umberger's production has declined, Phaneuf looks lost, and Mason has been an utter disaster for the Islanders.Milbury realizes something's got to change. If he wants to win a Cup, no more short-cuts. He has to build on the young pieces he has and not trade them away. Enough is enough.With the 4th pick in the 2012 draft the Isles select their new #1 defenceman of the future D Griffin Reinhart, and Milbury promises himself that he will never, under any circumstances, trade him away.2012-13Finally committed to a patient rebuild, the Islanders prepare for a difficult season. Sure enough, in a lockout-shorted campaign, the Islanders obtain the 5th overall pick. The Islanders receive a huge pile of offers for this pick, including one from Calgary that would include defenceman Mark Giordano and their 2011 4th round pick Johnny Gaudreau. But Milbury has learned his lesson the hard way, and he will not be made a fool of by prematurely trading a young player ever again.They use the 4th overall pick to draft Strome's future winger, RW Valeri Nichushkin.2013-14Strome's making progress, and Mason's minor resurgence keeps the 1st overall pick Aaron Ekblad out of the Islanders' grasp. Once again, a lot of teams call up the Islanders and try to get the 5th overall pick. Nice try, Predators, but if you think you're getting that pick for Filip Forsberg and Mattias Ekholm you are sorely mistaken. C Michael Dal Colle isn't gonna be another all-star Milbury's traded away, sorry bloggers.2014-15Eight straight years out of the playoffs is wreaking havoc on the Islanders' attendence numbers, and Wang asks Milbury to please try to make the team competitive so he can sell part of the ownership stake. Milbury reiterates that he wants to stay the course, but can't help himself but turn his eye to the trade market once again. As Gaudreau and Forsberg put up huge rookie seasons, he can't help but feel a little frustrated by the results of his change of heart and strategy.You can't help but be impressed by what Corey Perry did for the Ducks last season. You know, any team would be lucky to have Strome, Reinhart, Nichushkin, and Dal Colle - the rebuild is pretty much over, now it's time to build out. The Ducks don't want to give up their leading scorer, but Milbury is tantalized by the thought of him becoming the veteran anchor of a new dynasty...The Islanders trade their 2015 1st round pick (Jack Eichel), 2016 1st round pick (Matthew Tkachuk), and C Brock Nelson to the Ducks for RW Corey PerryYeah... that's the stuff. But for some reason Perry only scores 50 points next to Strome and an aging Lecavalier. Nichushkin, well, I'm sure he'll turn it around, but he looks awful. Phaneuf has a horrible year. Mason puts up big numbers facing over 35 shots a game but it's no use. The season is a nightmare and the Ducks receive the second overall pick. The Oilers put together an disgracefully low-ball offer for the Isles' future #1 defenceman Reinhart - who the hell is gonna be available at #16 who's that good? Milbury can't afford to trade away any more young talent. The Isles do trade into the 1st to get LW Anthony Beauvillier though.2015-16This season is a slog. With no pick, Milbury was depending on Ryan Strome and Valeri Nichushkin to take the next step, but they somehow regress. Dal Colle and Reinhart were supposed to enter the lineup with Calder-calibre seasons but they don't even make the team. This is a nightmare. The Isles finish 24th and lose Matthew Tkachuk.EpilogueIt's mid-way through another dismal season for the Islanders. In September, Milbury nihilistically traded a substantial package including Beauvillier to the Blue Jackets for Jack Johnson after hearing from him coaching staff that Griffin Reinhart once again did not make the roster out of training camp. Charles Wang calls him into the office to speak for the first time in years.When Milbury arrives, Wang surveys him carefully and begins to speak."Michael, as you know, as of today I have transitioned into minority ownership of the Islanders. I have been thinking about this day for a very long time. Do you know why?"Milbury, who's turned his office supply closet into a makeshift cellar of lukewarm six packs of Sam Adams, is not cognitively equipped to answer that question. Wang stands up and grabs him by the collar."It's because I can finally fire your dumb ass and not have to pay you 4 million dollars a year until I'm 77! I have lived a long life, and have made many mistakes. Do you remember when I asked you, all those years ago, why we do not just put a sumo wrestler in the net as a goalie?"Milbury chuckles and slurs "Yeah Chuck, I do""Well it turns out my mistake was not making the sumo wrestler my fucking general manager! I am replacing you with someone who can actually build a champion: Garth Snow. Your failure will shine even brighter next to his success."Wang releases Milbury and sits back down."Get out of here, Michael. You are without a doubt the most idiotic man I have ever met, and only an utter moron would care at all what you have to say about hockey."As Milbury staggers down the Nassau Coliseum hallway, his phone begins to vibrate incessantly - the news must have gotten out. He takes it out of his pocket and takes a call. The voice on the other end is breathless."Hey Mike, I'm calling on behalf of NHL on NBC. We just heard the news, and we knew we'd have to act fast. We're putting together a panel of brilliant hockey minds, and we think you're at that elite Pierre McGuire, Jeremy Roenick level. Interested?"Unemployment had hit Milbury hard - he had thrown up on the carpet. He was ready to get back in the game. Hockey had given him so much: a chance to compete for the Cup, millions of dollars, the chance to beat up some random guy with a shoe. It was time to finally give back and share his immense wisdom with the world.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thanks for reading. I'm going to take a few days off and then be back with either Vancouver or Vegas. (OC) Mike Milbury-ing the Islanders (An Alternate Reality) Source
1. In a preview clip for the forthcoming season of the E! show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the tension between Kim, 38, and Kourtney, 40, was palpable as they clashed over whether they would have candy present at a joint birthday bash - with a Candyland theme - for their respective eldest daughters North, six, and Penelope, seven.
The argument was triggered as the two, along with younger sister Khloe, 35, were relaxing at Kourtney's Calabasas mansion, where Kim discovered a massive dispenser containing multiple types of candy.
Kourtney told Kim that she didn't want sugary candy at the soiree, but rather healthier options.
'There's candies that are not disgusting and filled with chemicals ... do you want me to make you a collage or posterboard?' she asked Kim, who replied, 'Make me a f***ing pinata: all that s***, and I'll hit it with your face.'
Kourtney stayed on point, telling Kim they had 'to have some healthy options' at the Candyland-themed party, adding to her sister that she was 'dated' and 'in the past' in her party-planning mentality.
But Kim felt it defeated the purpose, telling Kourtney, 'It's a Candyland-themed party! Yes, that's, like, what the party is about, Candyland - it's not f***ing gluten-free land over here!'
2. Meghan King Edmonds has given her first, emotional interview about her husband Jim’s sexting scandal and told how she is determined to hold her family together and save her marriage, especially for the sake of their brain damaged one-year-old baby boy, Hart.
The former Real Housewives of Orange County star revealed how she discovered her MLB star hubby had sent explicit pics and movies to baseball groupie Jennifer Villegas, even sending a video showing him pleasuring himself the same day Meghan was in hospital preparing to give birth to twins Hart and Hayes.
But she says the fact her 49-year-old husband did not have a physical affair with mother of one Jennifer, who she brands a 'con artist,' saved their five-year marriage and Meghan says she knew Jim hadn’t laid a finger on Jennifer the second she saw a photo of her.
Speaking from her home in St. Louis, MO, Meghan, also mom to daughter Aspen, two, said: 'We're still married, we're still together, we're not separated. I know my engagement ring is well known! I'm still wearing it. I've never stopped wearing it.
'We're in the family home, we're in the same bed. We're not having therapy, we're talking.'
'In a marriage when there’s a fight or an indiscretion, nobody wins if they leave. If I left, I wouldn’t win. I don’t win by staying. The only way to win is to work through it. It’s not about right or wrong because everyone is hurt.
'I'm a mom, that's my strength and I need it. With fame, I've discovered the highs are very high and the lows are very low. I have had support from the housewives but my main support network are my close friends and family here in Missouri.
'My family is the ultimate example of a loving, supporting family and they know how to support my husband and I as a unit without condemning his actions.
'Jim has to go away and work and at least he's on TV so I know where he is!
'I’ve just got to have faith that he’s not going to screw up. But I know he’s not going to screw up. He really wants to make this work.'
3. G-Eazy is putting his support behind A$AP Rocky. The 30-year-old musician, who was also arrested in Sweden last year, spoke out on Twitter on Saturday.
'The difference between me and Rocky’s treatment in Sweden brings to mind two concepts that disgustingly go hand in hand: white privilege and systemic racism. Let’s call it what it is. He should not be behind bars right now. My heart goes out to @asvpxrocky,' he wrote.
G-Eazy was arrested in Stockholm in May of last year for punching a club security guard and snorting coke, according to TMZ.
The My, Myself & I hitmaker was arrested for assault, possession of drugs and use of narcotics but prosecutors let him to strike a deal less than two days later.
In exchange for pleading guilty to to violent resistance, a crime of violence against an official and illegal drug possession, he was sentenced to probation and had to pay a fine of $10,000.
He also had to pay the security guard he punched $900.
In comparison, a Stockholm court on Friday ordered that Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, should be kept in custody in Sweden for another week while an investigation is completed into an alleged assault during a street brawl.
Fans and fellow artists have launched a social media campaign for the 30-year-old artist to be freed since his arrest shortly after midnight on July 3 following the street fight on June 30.
Rocky was in Stockholm to perform in a concert.
The court then gave the prosecutor until July 19 to decide whether to press charges.
But the prosecutor requested the deadline be extended a week for more time - a request the court granted.
The rapper's lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, called the court's decision disproportionate.
He said that it was unreasonable to assume Rocky was a 'flight risk' since not returning for a potential trial could mean that the rapper would never be able to visit Europe again out of a fear of being arrested.
4. “The Chi” star Sonja Sohn was arrested for cocaine possession in North Carolina.
Sohn, 55, who also starred in HBO’s “The Wire,” was arrested early Sunday in North Carolina for cocaine possession, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Page Six confirmed.
Sohn, who was previously married to Adam Plack, was reportedly arrested and brought into the station at 2 a.m. local time and posted $1,500 bail shortly after. She will be arraigned Tuesday.
The actress played Detective Shakima Greggs on all five seasons of “The Wire.” Sohn portrayed Laverne on “The Chi” — a show that’s been plagued with off-camera drama. Sohn’s co-star Jason Mitchell, who played her son on the show, was fired following misconduct allegations.
5.
“The Hills” star Audrina Patridge has accused ex-husband Corey Bohan of domestic violence again.
Bohan, 37, has been ordered to stay away from their daughter, Kirra Bohan, and Patridge after an emergency hearing was launched, according to The Blast, citing court documents.
An emergency motion was filed by Patridge, 34, earlier this week seeking a temporary restraining order against Bohan.
The petition is listed as being filed on behalf of Patridge and Kirra, which listed the most recent alleged abuse as “May 2019, continuing to present.”
Bohan reportedly responded to the petition in court and a hearing was held. The judge granted a temporary restraining order until another hearing takes place later this month.
Bohan must stay 100 yards from Patridge and Kirra, including avoiding coming near their home, Kirra’s school, and other locations. He has also been denied visitation until the investigation is complete.
Patridge filed for divorce from Bohan in September 2017 after 10 months of marriage because he allegedly became menacing and emotionally abusive. They settled their divorce in November 2018.
A fiscally conservative Democrat defeated 5 different high-profile opponents to characterize Honolulu in Congress on Saturday, together with the architect of the state’s authorized problem to President Trump’s journey ban and a follower of Democrat socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The outcomes have been one more blow to Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who’ve more and more tried to take their message mainstream forward of the November midterm elections, solely to see their most popular candidates come up quick.
Former Congressman Ed Case, a 65-year-old fiscal conservative, overcame Lt. Gov. Doug Chin, who as lawyer common took the Trump administration to court docket over a ban on journey to america from a number of international locations within the Center East. The measure, which has since been upheld by the Supreme Courtroom, was initially dominated unconstitutional by a Hawaii federal decide.
After his loss Saturday, Chin praised “individuals who do not need to take the nation as a right and need to make the nation a greater place.”
When the Supreme Courtroom upheld Trump’s journey ban this summer time, Chin once more sharply condemned the Trump administration: “I damage at the moment for Hawaii households and others who’ve skilled discrimination and scapegoating on account of President Trump’s bullying remarks and orders.”
DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST TORCH-BEARERS FLAME OUT, DESPITE HIGH-PROFILE ENDORSEMENTS
Case additionally took down 29-year-old Kaniela Ing, a democratic socialist who hoped to observe within the footsteps of colleague Ocasio-Cortez of New York to attain an upset victory. Ing had Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, and the Bronx socialist candidate had stumped for Ing.
Case will face Cam Cavasso, a former state consultant who beforehand ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate.
In the meantime, Hawaii Gov. David Ige received the state’s Democratic main Saturday in his bid for a second time period, overcoming a troublesome main problem and fierce criticism after state officers despatched out a false inbound missile alert earlier this yr and left it uncorrected for greater than 30 minutes.
The ends in Hawaii, a closely Democratic state the place Republicans usually have little hope of prevailing in November, have been accompanied by some excellent news for Democrats as vote totals in earlier nationwide primaries are up to date.
Ige defeated U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who gave up her seat in Congress to run for governor. The incumbent in November will face state Rep. Andria Tupola, who received the Republican gubernatorial main.
Officers mistakenly despatched a warning of an imminent missile assault, promising “THIS IS NOT A DRILL,” to cellphones, radios and televisions on Jan. 13. Hanabusa used the false alarm as a key marketing campaign cudgel in opposition to Ige.
However the governor’s dealing with of the Kilauea volcano’s newest eruption, which destroyed greater than 700 properties and displaced 1000’s, in addition to devastating flooding on Kauai, might have improved his stature.
Additionally, Ron Curtis will face off in opposition to incumbent Sen. Mazie Hirono within the common election because the Republican Get together’s nominee to characterize Hawaii within the U.S. Senate. Hirono, who was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and have become the primary Asian-American feminine senator, is broadly anticipated to win in November.
Different main vote-tally updates
In Washington State, there was extra excellent news for Democrats: It is trying extra possible that the race for Washington’s ninth Congressional District can have two Democrats on the poll in November.
WATCH: WASHINGTON CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE AIMS TO BE THE NEXT OCASIO-CORTEZ
After King and Pierce Counties up to date their poll counts Friday night time, Democrat Sarah Smith was 2,582 votes forward of Republican Doug Basler, a major soar from her 196-vote lead the day earlier than. If her lead holds, she’ll advance together with Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented the district that features a part of Seattle for greater than 20 years.
Beneath Washington’s main system, all candidates seem on the identical poll and the highest two vote getters advance to the overall election, no matter social gathering. Washington is a vote-by-mail state and elections officers will proceed tallying ballots subsequent week.
Sarah Smith was recruited to run by Model New Congress, the identical group that backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s Democratic main this summer time.
Additionally in Washington, one other race the place votes have been nonetheless being tallied is the eighth Congressional District, the place Democrat Kim Schrier is sustaining her lead for the second spot in hopes of advancing to the overall election.
Schrier, a pediatrician, elevated her lead in up to date returns Friday over lawyer Jason Rittereiser. Republican Dino Rossi, a former state lawmaker who had unsuccessful runs for governor and the U.S. Senate, superior Tuesday to the November election.
KOBACH RECUSES HIMSELF IN KANSAS AS VOTE-COUNTING CONTINUES IN TIGHTH RACE
The 2 are looking for the seat left open by long-time incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, who’s retiring. The seat has been held by Republicans because it was created within the early 1980s. The district is amongst about two dozen throughout the nation which might be held by Republicans however whose voters selected Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump, making it a crucial potential pickup for the Democrats attempting to achieve management of the Home for the primary time since 2010.
And in Kansas, the counting of the final ballots within the tight and contentious Republican main for governor will stretch out over the subsequent week and nonetheless may not settle the race.
Trump-backed Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach leads Gov. Jeff Colyer by 110 votes out of 313,000-plus solid after late mail-in ballots from all 105 counties have been added Friday to totals from advance voting and ballots solid on the polls Tuesday.
The state’s 105 counties nonetheless should assessment practically 9,000 provisional ballots and decide what number of of them have been solid within the Republican main — and what number of might be counted. They’ve till Aug. 20 to complete that course of and certify their native outcomes.
Prince Harry, Meghan Markle engagement photos plus another Kardashian coming
On Wednesday, reality star Khloe Kardashian finally gave her fans what they wanted – a pregnancy announcement. After several months of non-stop speculation, Khloe confirmed the rumours and announced that she is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Tristan Thompson. The star broke the exciting news via a post on her Instagram page. In an intimate black and white photo, Tristan is seen embracing Khloe’s growing baby bump. Alongside the image, Khloe captioned, “My greatest dream realized! We are having a baby! I had been waiting and wondering, but God had a plan all along. He knew what he was doing. I simply had to trust in him and be patient. I still at times can’t believe that our love created life! Tristan, thank you for loving me the way that you do! Thank you for treating me like a Queen! Thank you for making me feel beautiful at all stages! Tristan, most of all, thank you for making me a MOMMY!!! You have made this experience even more magical than I could have envisioned! I will never forget how wonderful you’ve been to me during this time! Thank you for making me so happy my love! Thank you to everyone for the love and positive vibes! I know we’ve been keeping this quiet, but we wanted to enjoy this between our family and close friends as long as we could privately. To enjoy our first precious moments, just us. Thank you all for understanding. I am so thankful, excited, nervous, eager, overjoyed and scared all in one! But it’s the best bundle of feelings I’ve ever felt in my life!” Various stars have congratulated Khloe on her big news including Paris Hilton and famous celebrity make up artist Mario Dedivanovic. Naturally, Kris Jenner had to say something, and she put out an Instagram on Thursday. “God is so good!!” Jenner, 62, wrote on Instagram on Thursday, December 21. “I am beyond excited! What a blessing!!!!!!!” Though Jenner is the only member of the Kardashian clan so far to publicly comment on Khloé’s big reveal, Thompson did send his love to his girlfriend of 15 months. “My love, Thank you for allowing me to be apart of your journey and entering your life that day at the bel air hotel. One of the best moments in my life,” he commented on her Instagram post, referencing the first time they met. “I’m soo happy to be on this journey together with you and creating this angel from the man above. Every day I give thanks to him for bring[ing] us together. I love you soo much, and I know our little angel feels the love we share together and will know that mommy and daddy loves them unconditional forever and ever amen.” Congrats to Tristan and Khloe! Now, it is Kylie’s turn to confirm whether or not the speculation surrounding her possible pregnancy is true… Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are rocking a pre-newlywed glow. On Thursday, Kensington Palace released two official engagement portraits of the bride- and groom-to-be. The photographs were shot earlier this week at Frogmore House in Windsor by acclaimed fashion photographer Alexi Lumbomirski. “A huge thank you to His Royal Highness Prince Harry and Ms Markle, for allowing me to take their official engagement portraits,” Lumbomirski wrote Thursday on Instagram. “Not only was it an incredible honour, but also an immense privilege to be invited to share and be a witness to this young couple’s love for each other. I cannot help but smile when I look at the photos that we took.” Prince Harry, 33, and Markle, 36, announced their engagement Nov. 27 after more than a year of dating. The royal presented his lady love with a stunning sparkler, which included two diamonds from the collection of his late mother, Princess Diana. “The ring is yellow gold, because that’s [Markle’s] favorite, and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this — on this crazy journey together,” Harry said during the couple’s first joint interview with the BBC. Harry and Markle camped out in the African country last summer for five days. “It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which sort of links where you come from and Botswana, which is important to us, and it’s perfect,” Markle said. Markle has been welcomed into Harry’s family with open arms. Before she joins the Royals on Christmas Day, she was invited to Queen Elizabeth II’s pre-Christmas luncheon Wednesday at Buckingham Palace. The couple is set to wed at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. A woman has sued the rapper Nelly, claiming he sexually assaulted her on his tour bus and later damaged her reputation by refuting her account. The Seattle Times reported Wednesday that Monique Greene’s lawsuit against Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr., seeks unspecified damages. The rapper was arrested on his tour bus in a suburban Seattle Walmart parking lot in October. Prosecutors said last week they weren’t charging him because the woman wasn’t cooperating with the case. Nelly’s attorney says the lawsuit is financially motivated and a countersuit is planned. Greene’s lawyer, Karen Koehler, said her client only sued after the rapper publicly contended last week that Greene fabricated her story. The New York Times says it will remove reporter Glenn Thrush from the White House beat but not fire him following an investigation into sexual misconduct. A former colleague wrote last month that Thrush made unwanted, drunken advances on her and other women when they worked at Politico. The Times suspended Thrush and investigated while Thrush entered substance abuse rehabilitation. Times’ executive editor Dean Baquet says in a statement Wednesday that while Thrush acted offensively, he did not deserve to be fired and instead will be suspended for two months, undergo training and be given a new assignment. Baquet says that in addition to covering sexual misconduct cases aggressively, the Times is grappling with what consequences are appropriate in its own newsroom. He said each case must be examined individually. Female stars have rallied around former E! News host Catt Sadler, who suddenly announced her exit from the media network earlier this week. After nearly 12 years of working at the network, the star announced that she would not be renewing her contract with the network, in which she hosted E! News and the two-hour live daytime show Daily Pop. Shortly after news of her exit made waves on the Internet, Catt spoke with tabloid publication People magazine about her decision to leave. The star candidly explained the frustrations that triggered her bold decision, saying, “[I was] informed and made aware that my male equivalent at the network [Jason Kennedy] who I started with the same year and have come up with doing essentially similar jobs, if not the same job, wasn’t just making a little bit more than me but was making double my salary and has been for several years.” The star went on to rant, “That was really hard to swallow, but you know information is supposed to be power and when my team began negotiations knowing what we knew, that was the barometer in which I expected to be paid, based on the law and based on what I know to be fair. And what I believe in my heart of hearts is reasonable” Unfortunately, E! evidently didn’t come to an agreement with Catt, resulting in her unexpected – but highly justified – exit. Several A-list actresses have since spoken out in support of Catt and her fight for gender equality in the workplace. Interstellar actress Jessica Chastain posted on Twitter, “Wow this is so disappointing. When are companies like [E Entertainment] going to understand that women should be paid fairly? ½ of her male counterpart is not appropriate.” In addition, on Facebook, Silver Linings Playbook starlet Jennifer Lawrence shared Catt’s article in which she explained her decision to leave E!, adding the caption, “Thank you Catt for sharing your story.” Jessica Chastain, Twitter post: https://twitter.com/jes_chastain/status/943437231695515648 Jennifer Lawrence, Facebook post: "Thank you for sharing your story." Here's what Catt Sadler said about the experience in her own words: I know first hand that dreams do come true. For the past twelve years, I've been living mine out loud as one of the hosts on E television. For more than a decade I've walked through the doors at E and traveled into people's living rooms around the world. I've reported from a royal wedding, the Olympics, and the Oscars. I've been to film festivals in France, movie premieres in Rio, and fashion week in Paris. I've gotten chased by the paparazzi on camera while shopping with Kris Jenner, co-hosted shows with Khloe, Kim and Kourtney, and interviewed Kendall and Kylie back in those early Keeping Up days when no one could remember their names. It has been unpredictable, intoxicating, rewarding and hard work. Five days a week since February 2006. First, for The Daily 10 and later for E News. Then, this year happened. Daily Pop was born. I was named host which meant double duty. Hosting a live, two-hour daytime show while also hosting E News most nights. It was creatively challenging but genuinely one of the most fulfilling years of my professional career. Coincidentally, around this same time an executive from E brought something alarming to my attention -- namely, that there was a massive disparity in pay between my similarly situated male co-host and myself. More recently, when E reached out to renew and extend my deal, I learned that he wasn't just making a little more than I was. In fact, he was making close to double my salary for the past several years. Information is power. Or it should be. We are living in a new era. The gender pay gap is shrinking, although admittedly we have a long way to go. And well, I learned this first hand. My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were repeatedly denied. Know your worth. I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore. I so lovingly refer to him as my "tv husband," and I mean it. But how can I operate with integrity and stay on at E if they’re not willing to pay me the same as him? Or at least come close? How can I accept an offer that shows they do not value my contributions and paralleled dedication all these years? How can I not echo the actions of my heroes and stand for what is right no matter what the cost? How can I remain silent when my rights under the law have been violated? It's scary. I am a single mother of two boys. The unknown can be terrifying, but it can also be the most beautiful gift. Countless brave women have come forward this year to speak their truth. Females refuse to remain silent on issues that matter most because without our voices, how will we invoke lasting change? How can we make it better for the next generation of girls if we do not stand for what is fair and just today? It was my desire to stay at my job. To continue entertaining our loyal viewers around the world. To keep working alongside some of the best writers, directors, and producers in the game. Everyone from the studio crew, hair and makeup artists, to the security at the front door are true friends of mine. They have been my work family and I love them dearly. Unfortunately, however, my decision was made for me and I must go. I will find more work. I will create content with meaning. I will continue to pursue my passions while making my children proud. The way I see it, I have an obligation to be an agent for change. It was important for me to explain my departure. I did not want to disappear from your television screens and have you wonder why. Thank you for your precious time all these years. Thank you for the support. Thank you for the constant exchange of ideas on social media as well. This chapter is over and a new one begins. Big big love, Catt While disgraced “Today” anchor Matt Lauer battles to save his 20-year marriage to former Dutch model Annette Roque, she has been meeting with lawyers about squeezing a bigger settlement out of him if they proceed to a divorce. A grim-faced Roque was seen Wednesday heading into the office of law firm Latham & Watkins in Manhattan. Lauer was fired in November by NBC bosses for “inappropriate sexual behavior.” And this week, former “Today” staffer Addie Zinone revealed her relationship with Lauer that took place in 2000, when she was a 24-year-old production assistant, saying the affair was consensual, but also an “abuse of power.” Roque had previously filed for divorce from Lauer in 2006, citing “mental abuse, extreme mental and emotional distress, humiliation, torment, and anxiety,” but withdrew the filing weeks later after he offered her a post-nuptial agreement and millions more dollars, a source told media outlets. The source explained, “The post-nup will likely specify how much Annette would get if they divorce, but she is expected to challenge it given Matt’s earnings since 2006, and given how he has humiliated her. There are also issues over all the property and land they own, both in the Hamptons and abroad.” Lauer was being paid $25 million a year by NBC under a contract he signed in 2016. The couple have three children, a 16-year-old son, a 14-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son. Lauer released a statement soon after his firing, saying he was “truly sorry.” He partially denied some of the allegations, but admitted that “there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.” Eminem has lashed out again at President Trump, saying in an interview with Vulture that he hopes the president “gets impeached.” When asked by the outlet how he hopes the presidency carries on in 2018, the rapper replied, “I hope he gets impeached. I’d be there for that.” The comment came just days after his latest album, “Revival,” was released on Dec. 15 and weeks after the rapper released a video blasting the president. The rapper, known for his punchy and often explicit lyrics, told Vulture that Trump “makes his blood boil” and his lyrics focused on the president are meant to “get a message out.” “I can’t even watch the news anymore because it makes me too stressed out,” he said. “I want our country to be great too, I want it to be the best it can be, but it’s not going to be that with him in charge.” Eminem went on to call Trump’s election “a disappointment” and told Vulture that his politics were dividing Americans. He also argued that the president, “who’s never known struggle,” has deceived people into believing that he’s fighting for them. “He’s very good at flipping narratives,” the rapper said. “I just feel mad that Trump’s sold people a dream that’s never coming true. I want the division in this country to stop. And like I said, I most want people to take a second and think about what I’m saying.” When asked by Vulture whether he and the president have any similarities, noting their potentially over-lapping fan bases, the rapper said their differences were “bigger than any parallels.” “I actually don’t know if I can see why people who relate to me feel like they can relate to him,” Eminem told the outlet. “This is a guy who was born rich, who says he got a small loan from his father of a million dollars. Where I come from, a small loan is five f—–g dollars.” This isn’t the first time the rapper has blasted the president. At the BET Awards in October, Eminem released a pre-recorded rap video against Trump. But when he never got a response, he told the Shade 45 radio show that he was “extremely angry” and felt like Trump wasn’t “paying attention” to him. But should Trump feel compelled to respond to Eminem’s latest criticisms, the rap star said he has a few choice words prepared. “I’m not going to give any away now, but I’ve got lines ready if he says something about me,” Eminem said. Warner Bros. has moved back “A Star Is Born,” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, back nearly five months from May 18 to Oct. 5 — moving the drama into awards season consideration. Cooper is also helming the film, which will mark his directing debut. He will produce through his 22 and Green production company along with Jon Peters, Bill Gerber, and Basil Iwanyk. The project, based on the William Wellman-directed 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, centers on a fading movie star who helps an aspiring actress while his own career spirals downward. James Mason and Judy Garland starred in a 1954 remake and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson toplined the 1976 version. Cooper came on as director following his work with Clint Eastwood on “American Sniper.” Eastwood attempted to get the film made for years with Cooper in the role of the fading movie star and eventually left the project, but not before suggesting to Cooper that he try directing the movie, as the actor was seeking his first directing job. Gaga’s previous acting credits include “American Horror Story: Hotel,” which earned her a Golden Globe for best actress in a miniseries; and its subsequent season, “Roanoke.” News broke on Tuesday that Gaga is set to kick off a residency in Las Vegas at the MGM Park Theater. The deal closed over the weekend and will bring the pop star to the city starting in late 2018. “A Star Is Born” will open against Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff “Venom” with Tom Hardy starring, and Fox’s “Bad Times at the El Royale,” starring Chris Hemsworth. The decision leaves May 18 with only one wide opening: Sony’s horror movie “Slenderman.” Warner Bros. originally planned to open “A Star Is Born” on Sept. 28, then announced in November, 2016, that it had moved the release date forward to May 18. Will Smith may cringe when he watches reruns of his hit ‘90s show “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” “If you watch the first four or five episodes you can see I’m mouthing other people’s lines,” Smith shared on Friday’s episode of “The Graham Norton Show,” according to The London Evening Standard. “It’s terrible and I can’t bear to watch it.” Smith, 49, claims he was focused on success so he learned everyone’s lines. While some ‘90s shows are on the reboot track, Smith isn’t sure “Fresh Prince” will get the same treatment. “Man, I’d have to be Uncle Phil in that one now. I’m nearly 50!” he quipped. There’s also turmoil within the original cast. TV mom Janet Hubert has been at odds with Smith over the last several years. And Smith’s TV uncle, James Avery, died in 2013. In August, Smith once again dismissed reboot rumors telling Entertainment Tonight, “Nah man, you can’t touch stuff like that. It’s so nostalgic for people — I’m not going nowhere near that.” Tom Hanks is the star of a new movie about the release of the top secret Pentagon Papers. Given the movie’s content and how it deals with the American media, Hanks says that he’s not interested in screening the film at the Trump White House if asked. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he’d respond positively to a request to screen his new film, “The Post,” at the White House, Hanks cited the events in Charlottesville, the president’s recent meeting with Navajo veterans and the Trump administration’s treatment of the media, which often calls most outlets “fake news,” as the reason for his reluctance. “I don’t think I would. Because I think that at some point — look, I didn’t think things were going to be this way last November. I would not have been able to imagine that we would be living in a country where neo-Nazis are doing torchlight parades in Charlottesville [Va.] and jokes about Pocahontas are being made in front of the Navajo code talkers. And individually we have to decide when we take to the ramparts,” he said. “You don’t take to the ramparts necessarily right away, but you do have to start weighing things. You may think: ‘You know what? I think now is the time.’ This is the moment where, in some ways, our personal choices are going to have to reflect our opinions. We have to start voting, actually, before the election. So, I would probably vote not to go.” “The Post,’ directed by Steven Spielberg, depicts the story of the Washington Post’s decision in the 1970s to publish the top secret Pentagon Papers, which held details about the United State’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The paper ultimately decided to publish the documents despite pressure from then-president Richard Nixon not to. Hanks plays the paper’s editor, Ben Bradlee. While most may not have heard of a movie screening at the White House, it’s actually something that happens often for movies hoping to get a small boon to their publicity. The White House family theater is located in the East Wing of the address and is typically a place for the president and his or her family to watch films. Studios often provide the White House with screenings upon request. It’s worth noting that Donald Trump has not actually asked to screen “The Post” in the White House. Rosie O’Donnell made a last-ditch attempt to halt the GOP’s landmark tax bill when she offered $2 million to any Congress member to change their vote — and some are seeing the move as an illegal bribe. “So how about this i promise to give 2 million dollars to senator susan collins and 2 million to senator jeff flake if they vote NO,” O’Donnell tweeted on Tuesday night. “no sh-t 2 million cash each.” The former talk show host singled out Flake (R-Ariz.) and Collins (R-Maine), who were considered swing votes on the bill. Critics argued that Rosie’s bone-headed move could leave her open her to criminal charges.
A Short D&D Scenario
The Setup
A gamemaster, u/The-Babyface, posted a question to r/DnD on Reddit about dealing with a financially over-powered player. He asked:
So I have a player that's the 'rules lawyer' of my 5e group. As I have taken up DM'ing quite recently and not as up to speed as the others, I feel like sometimes I'm taken advantage of by blindsiding me with long winded explanations and I don't know how to deal with it.
The biggest example I have so far is that by taking his earnings from the first dungeon in the campaign, he's invested it in a loan with a bank in Neverwinter then bought a broken warehouse in the port and used it to hire dwarves and gnomes and produce enormous amounts of steel armour and weaponry. So now he's got all the money he wants pouring in and I don't know how to stop it. It's partly my fault for just saying 'yes' to get him to stop explaining because it brought a game to a halt as he worked out exactly how much he earned a day.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I break it and try and take it away from him for being OP or do I leave it?
Do you have any tips to deal with the OP min/maxers creatively
Below is my somewhat elaborate answer...
The Hook
The next time the rules lawyer player (who I will name "Dictum Mouthpiece"—"Dick" for short) comes back into town, he sees workmen busily finishing new construction of what had been a perfectly serviceable wing of the warehouse. When he inquires with his foreman as to whats going on, the foreman (let's call him Max Goldenbeard, that's a good dwarven name) says,
"There was a fire m'lord, just after you and your companions left. It destroyed the grinding and polishing wing. I had to use the income from the factory to rebuild it. And in order to make our promised deliveries, I had to ship the grinding and polishing work across town to Goggon's Toolworks. Between the repairs to the warehouse, new grinding tooling, and what we had to pay to Goggon's, we lost _____ gp since you've been gone. But we are back in production now, and turning a profit again. I'm sure everything will be all right."
If he reprimands his foreman Max for spending extra money to keep production going and make repairs, then the next time something happens to interrupt production (and it will...), Max will do nothing until Dick gets back from adventuring. Which will mean unhappy customers, canceled orders, and demands from customers who did not cancel their orders for discounts, lest they cancel their order.
If he fires Max, well... see below.
Things Get Worse
The next day Dick Mouthpiece will be approached by a well-dressed gentleman on the street. He will beg for a moment of Dick's time to discuss a business proposition, and offer to buy him a drink at a nearby tavern while Dick hears his offer out. If Dick is not interested in talking, the man will hint that he has information about the fire and that it may not have been accidental.
After they sit down, the man will introduce himself as Hawken of the Tunnel Street Business Association, which he describes as a "civic-minded group of entrepreneurs" who have banded together for mutual protection against a the Gnashers, a local criminal gang on the rise. The Gnashers gang, Hawken explains, were behind the fire at Dick's factory, and will likely be approaching him for protection money soon. He states that the Tunnel Street Business Association is in the business of providing a defense against such criminal gangs. All it will cost is ____ gp a month for his contribution (____ gp being about 40% of the profits of his factory).
If Dick, accepts his offer, and pays up, of course, they will part friends, and everything will go swimmingly—for about two days. If Dick rejects Hawken's offer, then Hawken will explain that the Tunnel Street Business Association has limited resources, and can't afford to supply security to non-members. If Dick tries to bargain on the price, Hawken will explain that the membership fees are set by the entire board, and he is not allowed to reduce them.
The Tunnel Road Business Association is, of course, is a protection racket. If Dick figures it out, he can challenge Hawken on it, and Hawken will insist they are honest business people and leave in a huff. If Dick goes to the local authorities, the Guard will promise a vigorous and thorough investigation, before going to the TRBA to pick up their monthly kickback. If Dick hires private security, it will be cheaper in the short run. But at least 20% of his Security hires will be working for the TRBA (or the Gnashers—we will get to them in a moment), leaving them well placed to do damage, and cover for each other, as well.
Whatever Dick does, in two days he will be approached by a stunning half-elven woman who introduces herself as Shira. She has a business proposition for him, you see…
Shira represents the Gnash Avenue Council, and unlike those rogues and criminals in the TRBA, they are a group of legitimate and hardworking merchants and factory owners, who have banded together to, etc.
Shira’s offer is pretty much identical to Hawken’s—join up and pay 40% of your profits and we will protect you against the other guys. Shira, however, is very beautiful and flirtatious and will use her (non-magical) charms to her best advantage. Shira’s group, the Gnash Avenue Council (GAC) also has the local guard paid off, and she’s sleeping with the Captain of the Guard for the entire quarter, to boot.
Tumblr media
Shira and the Captain of the Guard Have an Arrangement, Unknown / Wizards of the Coast, Scoundrels of Skullport
The TRBA, meanwhile, will have hired Max Goldenbeard (if Dick was dumb enough to fire him for showing initiative and keeping his business afloat) as a “consultant”. If Dick has not fired Max and takes it in his head that Max is working for one of the gangs, and accuses him of such, Max will quit, as his honor has been impugned. The next guy Dick hires as foreman will be working for either the TRBA or the GAC (whether he wants to or not).
Dick is in a real bind here. If he pays the GAC, the TRBA will do their best to cause as much disruption as possible to his business. If he pays the TRBA, the GAC will be after him. If he tells them both to go to hell, they will both be causing trouble. If he pays both gangs, he will be making only 20% of what he used to. And will feel like a real wimp.
Dick’s only recourse is to convince his fellow party members to take on the local criminal gangs (who have NPCs of a level to provide a threat to the group), and—perhaps unknown to the party—the corrupt local Guard.
Not only that, while the group is uncovering what is going on, and who’s in charge, and at least one gang will be causing his factory to hemorrhage money. He might even have to borrow from his fellow party members to keep afloat and keep his private security paid. If they are smart, they will demand part of the business as collateral.
Other Complications
Major figures in both “Groups of Legitimate Business People” will be warded against scrying and mind-reading.
Both gangs will be willing to threaten and intimidate employees and security people to let them damage the factory.
If Dick has to go to a third party to borrow money, he will have to put up his factory as collateral. If he does this, either GAC or TRBA likely find out and attempt to buy his loan. There might even be a bidding war! Someone in the party (who has appropriate friends and/or connections) will get wind of this in advance so they can try to stop it. By paying off the loan.
At some point, if things escalate, one party member should wake up with the severed head of his or her pet or familiar in bed next to him.
Based on your description it is likely Dick has pissed off his competitors by undercutting them. They are not likely to provide much help. There is a reason that run-down warehouse was such a steal. It was in a bad location with bad elements nearby.
If Dick tries to pay off one gang to concentrate on the other (a potentially good tactic), the gang he’s paying off will want a higher cut than before.
Gang Tactics
The gangs will attempt to damage his business by a combination of several of the following methods:
Whisper campaigns of inferior quality goods.
Intimidating key factory employees into quitting.
Hijacking shipments to customers.
Paying off and/or intimidating factory security & employees to allow finished goods to be stolen.
Threatening or bribing suppliers into providing inferior quality components.
Three words: Rust Monster Rampage.
Trying to destroy Dick’s public image. If he’s done any Murder Hobo-ing, one of the gangs will manage to turn up a sympathetic relative to tell his or her story. If he’s never done any such thing, they will just make one up.
Sell stolen factory goods to a nearby hostile foreign power.
Another unfortunate fire. He needs to keep all that metal dust from grinding and polishing wetted down. It can be explosive, if not handled properly.
Cause Disease spells on the factory workforce.
Each (not paid off) gang should be doing different things, with some overlap.
Conclusion
Dealing with the gangs and corrupt local Guard and Officials should be something the players can accomplish if they work together and are smart.
And at the end of it, no one in town will be messing with Dick’s Factory—and the group will feel like they have earned that money (GM—make sure Dick has to share with his fellow party members).
tl;dr: I like it, but maybe you could have put your most privileged character earlier in the release of the Defenders’ backstories?—thoughts on Iron Fist’s reception
3/17/17, pre-watching: Jason Long's dad, fake Remus Lupun, like I know I need to watch this for continuity, but you couldn't have done the white-boy millionaire plot somewhere before the other subjects: Blind white male lawyer; ptsd sufferer, rape victim, & alcoholic white woman; experimentation subject–even by his wife!–vilified black man. Legit I was bored with the idea going into this about it being some white male and how literally tired I am with watching white guys try to be sympathetic. I don't have a problem identifying with him, obviously I've been identifying with white men for ages. I just think they put their least sympathetic character last before having Defenders come out. Which is not the best way to sell it.
3/21/17 having watched 2.5 episodes: I don’t have any major issues with it compared to the other shows overall: like idk about the technical stuff people complain about for any of the shows anyway; I couldn’t find evidence that he’s supposed to be anything but caucasian from my glance around wikipeda—so there’s no Swinton-ing going on with that as far as I know; I’m drawn in like I usually am; feel the same amount of wtf/contempt for the villains; and I get why his plot line is more relevant now, but still. Timing guys. I think Jones is kinda right about the Drumpf factor too, but I don’t think it was a good move of him to point it out. I do agree with his point that some of the superhero movies/shows—the netflix marvel series definitely—are more made for fans than critics. In the case of the DC movies people are expecting the broad reaching entertainment levels of the Marvel Avengers franchise, and they need to decide what direction they’re going to stick to cause they’re achieving high levels of convolution right now. Like they’re condensing all of this stuff from the comic books into a few movies to catch up to the marvel one, but they could have played a long game of storylines like marvel instead while being truer to the fans/comic and been much better off.
