New writers haven't been learning how to write or showrun because there haven't been the opportunities for them to do so. Companies have been employing mini rooms and not paying for enough writers to do the job, so most of the time, they can't bring in new writers, people that need to learn.
As I've said elsewhere, these are some of the reasons that current shows aren't always great: not enough writers, not enough training, not enough time to do their job.

My latest newsletter is about Hollywood constantly going back to the same heroes (Luke Skywalker, Captain Kirk) instead of expanding their universes. To get more perspective, I talked to the wonderful @okbjgm about creating new heroes in old universes.

BW's Daily Video & Article LInk> The Witcher Showrunners Keep Digging That Hole
BW's Daily Video & Article LInk> The Witcher Showrunners Keep Digging That Hole
Catch more from The Critical Drinker on YouTube When it comes to the current crop of shows doing everything it can to tick off their fans, The Witcher seems to be near the top of the list. I’m not even a fan of the franchise and I can see everything going wrong. First they chased off Henry Cavill for wanting to be accurate to the books, then tried to say he was hard to work with (which failed)…

This is a masterclass in how worldbuilding occurs organically through the process of storytelling. If you are a creator, read it, and then save it so you can read again later. You’ll thank yourself.

Quote
Becoming a showrunner used to be standardized, said Grillo-Marxuach. “When I started working in television back in the Stone Age and I had to fight velociraptors to get into the studio, the way you advanced was incredibly regimented. You did one season of at least 22 episodes on a show as a staff writer. Then you got promoted to story editor. You did at least one season of 22 on that. Then you got promoted to executive story editor. Then the same thing to co-producer, to producer, supervising producer to, you know, executive producer. So you had like a stepwise system of several years that you had, that you had to spend in the trenches just to legitimately get the promotions you needed to be at the executive producer level. And if you look at the amount of time that it took me starting my career in that time versus the amount of time that it takes, even writers who, you know, have put time in various staffs to get to executive producer, it's a much shorter curve now.” Along with this formal path was a lot of mentoring. “For all the problems to be had in the ’80s and ’90s, one of the things that nobody seems to realize is that there was a very, very hard-wired system of apprenticeship,” continued Grillo-Marxuach. “The first show that I ever worked on, I worked for these hardcore Stephen Cannell veterans, and they were sort of like what I imagine Mad Men in the ’80s with cocaine would have been—at least in the way they told their stories of the ’80s. But they had a very, very, very dyed-in-the-wool culture of mentorship. My first showrunner literally threw me into the room and said, ‘Do a pass with the editor.’ And to an extent, everybody was perceived to be in producer school.”

Lost Illusions: The Untold Story of the Hit Show's Poisonous Culture
"The show was a groundbreaking smash, but behind the scenes it devolved into such toxicity that even co-showrunner Damon Lindelof now says of his leadership: 'I failed.' A powerful excerpt from the new book Burn It Down" by Maureen Ryan."

Strike Support Declining - Here's how you can continue to support the writers
Since the WGA strike started on May 2, the public has shown immense support for the writers—sending food, snacks, drinks, and encouragement from across the world all the way to Los Angeles, New York, and other picketing locations.
But loud and vocal strike support—in the news and in public spaces—is notably declining the longer the strike goes on. So we're bringing you a few ways to show writers, studios, and fellow fans: we're still here, and we still stand with the WGA.
1. Post on Twitter (and other social media sites)
You might think social media noise won't be noticed by the studios, but it CAN encourage individual WGA members—and slowly but surely put pressure on the studios to make a fair deal.
If you follow WGA members such as Adam Conover (Adam Ruins Everything), John Rogers (Leverage, Librarians), Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The Witcher) [and many many more you can find through their following lists], tell them you support them! Hashtag #IStandWithTheWGA #DoTheWriteThing and tell them that you and your fandom are prepared to support them as long as the strike lasts; that they deserve to have their demands met and you're with them all the way. Boost morale however and whenever you can!
Likewise, actively push back against misinformation/disinformation. See a TikTok claiming that all Hollywood writers are filthy rich and we shouldn't vocally support them? Correct it with well-sourced citations from the WGA, published news articles, and stories from those affected (like the time a writer on FX's The Bear attended the an awards show with his bank account balance in the negative, only to then win an award for Best Comedy Series—proving that good writers on award-winning shows still cannot make a living!)
Remember you can always link to Adam Conover's excellent explanation of WGA demands versus studio refusals, tweeted here.
2. Donate or boost fundraisers
You might be surprised to learn that the picketing locations are not always parties! Sometimes themed pickets are fun, and fandoms and celebrities occasionally are able to fundraise for a food truck or ice cream truck at picketing locations. However, that is the EXCEPTION and not the norm. Writers are asking for food & drinks at many locations.
There are many funds to donate to, and it can be overwhelming to pick one! But one that could use your support RIGHT NOW is the CBS Radford picket line:
Tumblr media
-If you're in LA, you can bring food and snacks directly to that picket line (or get food deliveries sent there, with instructions to be given to the strike captain on duty.) Strike locations are available on the WGA West website and are updated there.
-Or there's a pizza fund for the strike locations (unfortunately Venmo is a US-only donation option)
Tumblr media
-If you're not in LA, donate to the Entertainment Community Fund to support TV and film workers affected by the strike.
-More tips on donating to the strike in this great article!
-Lots of fandoms are organizing donations on their own, for instance the Our Flag Means Death fundraiser on Paypal (updated 30 July 2023 with new link) (available internationally). Check to see if your fandom has started a fundraiser... or start one yourself to show your support! We're happy to give tips on organizing your fandom!
As always, please boost this post and any and all well-sourced information that comes from the WGA or its members. We're happy to fact-check anything you send our way too.

And before you wonder and hum har about certain voices here.
Tumblr media
This. This is how creators should act in solidarity right now. Not selfishly, but minding that all of them right now are risking everything while actively fighting.
Unions only work if everyone works together for the shared goal. Especially against giants like these unions are facing. Let's help them. Weaken the position studios have toward their investors. Increase the pressure to give in to the demands of the strikers. Take away what they rely on us giving them: time and money. Stand with the WGA and SAG and stop streaming.

The schedule is official, which means we can announce the details of our panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! 💫 Here’s the blurb:
Over the past decade, fans and creators have had more access to each other than ever before—and sometimes, the results have been painful. How can creators take in fan feedback without altering their work in a reactionary way? How can fans express good-faith critique without placing demands on creators? Featuring panelists who spend time on both sides of the fan/creator divide: Sarah Kuhn (the Heroine Complex series, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra) Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), Britta Lundin (Riverdale, Betty), Justin Bolger (StarWars.com, Fantasy Fight Games), and Flourish Klink (Fansplaining), moderated by Elizabeth Minkel (Fansplaining).
If you’re coming to SDCC, we’d love to see you there! We’ll likely meet up afterwards at the Marriott pool bar—our traditional spot, but v convenient given our panel location and time this year—but need to confirm those details. That’s wholly outside, and as you likely already know if you’re attending, proof of vax/negative test + mask wearing will be mandatory inside the con.
[Flier alt-text: Sparkly, outer-space-esque background in magenta/purple. Text in white at the top reads: Fansplaining @ SDCC 2022: Listening to the Fans. Breaking down the complicated conversations between creators and fans—featuring panelists who have been on both sides of the divide. Fan logo in the center bottom with a list of panelists on one side: Sarah Kuhn, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Britta Lundin, Justin Bolger, Flourish Klink, Moderated by Elizabeth Minkel. Panel details on the other side: Saturday, July 23rd, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Grand 10 & 11, Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina Text beneath details reads: (Outdoor) Fansplaining meetup afterwards TBD!]

This is a heavy read, but if you're at all interested in how television works, or have ever wondered how bad a TV working environment can possibly get, or are a fan of Lost or modern genre TV at all...
This is an incredibly well-reported piece about the racism & abuse in the writer's room of Lost. (TW for abuse, racism, misogyny, and a decent amount of gaslighting.) Anyone working in the entertainment industry will tell you that these people are still working today & get credit for making "great TV" while all their past behavior is completely excused—and that these attitudes are not uncommon in Hollywood at all.
The article is an excerpt from from a forthcoming book: BURN IT DOWN: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood by Maureen Ryan.
For further reading on the same subject, writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach released his full 7-page final statement, including his complete remarks to Maureen Ryan.
