For Elizabeth (of York)’s personal needs, as might be expected, she lavished funds on clothing, jewels, silver, and gold ... Also interesting for insights into her reign are the entertainments for which she paid and the loans she requested from her acquaintances. At wages of £3, 6s. 8d., annually, she employed three minstrels, Richard Denouse, Jayn Marcazin, and Marques Loryden. Members of the royal family seem to have shared each other’s minstrels since she rewarded those of the king and her two eldest surviving children. Evidence of this royal sharing seems to be supported by entries in the accounts of John Heron, Henry VII’s treasurer of the chamber. In them are several references to the king’s rewarding the queen’s minstrels and fiddlers in amounts ranging from 10s. to 40s.
... Returning to evidence of entertainments in Elizabeth’s privy purse accounts, she paid for the construction of an arbor in the little park at Windsor Castle so that she could hold an outdoor banquet there, and she later compensated the king’s painter, John Reynold, for drawings of beasts and other pleasures at the castle. The only entries referring to her gambling appear in October, which indicate she spent 13s. 4d. twice “playing at dice.” In addition, she owned greyhounds, for the upkeep of which she paid 2d. per day. The queens not only possessed greyhounds and hunted with bows and arrows during the summer progresses but also had lapdogs for their amusement. Finally, just a few weeks before her death, she rewarded a maid from Spain, who danced for her, with 4s. 4d.

i've only very recently begun to get into wrestling, and i was wondering if you knew much about the uk scene and watching shows and indies and all that? i'm a little clueless and not sure where to begin looking
Hi! I'm afraid my schedule and covid have meant that I've not been keeping up much with the UK indie scene over the last few years, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. But I'm happy to impart what little knowledge I have (with the caveat that some of it might be outdated or inaccurate). Maybe if someone who knows more sees this they can give a better answer!
So I do know that the UK scene is in a weird place right now. It suffered a series of serious blows: NXT UK signing all the top talent to semi-exclusive contracts (afaik they can't wrestle anywhere else with a streaming deal?), COVID putting a load of promotions out of business, and then Speaking Out revealing a lot of prominent figures to be abusers or sex pests. So I'd say it's very much in a rebuilding phase right now. A lot of the promotions I used to follow (e.g. Riptide, Fight Club Pro) have either closed or gone on permanent hiatus.
There are still a lot of good wrestlers out there, but it's mostly a mixture of young up-and-comers, perpetual midcard journey(wo)men, and established names who've been passed over by NXT (generally because they've got a niche gimmick or just aren't a good fit for the NXT UK style).
In terms of promotions, the one I'm most familiar with is Pro Wrestling EVE, which is an all female promotion down in London, with a DIY punk feel to them. Haven't watched for a while, but they used to put on some pretty cool shows. Like everywhere, they've suffered from talent drain though.
Progress is the big one in London. Used to be a massive phenomenon, but since their deal with WWE they've lost any credible claim to the punk rock ethos that they were known for cultivating. From what I've seen, they still feature a lot of the top indie talent though, and it's one of the only places you'll be occasionally able to see wrestlers signed to NXT UK outside of WWE programming.
There's also Rev Pro, which has good relations with international companies like NJPW, so used to have a reputation for featuring some good talent from abroad. E.g. it's still a common excursion destination for NJPW's young lions. Not sure what the shows have been like recently though
Other than that, there are tons of local promotions across the country, a lot of which have streaming options. E.g. locally to me, Wrestling Resurgence and Wrestle Carnival both do some good stuff. It's probably best to use YouTube to watch free matches and find some wrestlers you like the look of, then use the Cagematch website to see where they wrestle regularly. Then you can see if any of those promotions have streaming services or run shows near you (if you're in the UK)
Here are some of my personal favourites on the UK scene rn (excluding NXT UK talent):
Cara Noir - cool gimmick, unique look, great storyteller, and really crisp ring work
Gene Munny - hilarious character work backed up with some solid in-ring skills
Spike Trivet - excellent villain and storyteller who can turn his hand to violent matches when needs be
Chris Ridgeway - talented striker who currently splits his time between the UK and Japan. Can always be relied on for a good match
Charlie Morgan - my absolute favourite. Really cool daredevil style. She's the best babyface in the UK indies imo. Fairly recently came out of (early) retirement!
Session Moth Martina - one of the funniest comedy wrestlers around. Hilarious and very creative
Emersyn Jayne - Scottish wrestler who is super underrated imo. Deserves to be better known
Laura DiMatteo - extremely consistent and very technically sound. Always a good watch
Alex Windsor - haven't seen a ton of her matches myself but I know she's been making waves in Stardom and TJPW recently
Charli Evans - mostly wrestling in the US and her native Australia these days, but used to be based in the UK and well worth watching whenever she returns. Fantastic, hard-hitting style
Hope that helps! Sorry it's a bit rambling! Let me know if you have any more questions (although I can't promise I'll know the answer). And if anyone else has any favs or recommendations from the UK indies then please comment away and I'll reblog them!

About Romance Novels
There are so many types of books in the fiction category.  I discovered long ago that I love romance. The books can be in the past, present or future.  The books can have characters who are cowboys, gangsters, thugs or dukes and earls.  I love them all.  They can be thrillers, historical, or even futuristic. I like them hot and heavy all the way to sweet and demure.
Obviously I can not be the only person on earth that feels this way as there are so many romantic novels sold each and every year.  One third to one half of all mass market books are romance novels.  According to statistics used by Amy Pennza 15% of romance readers buy a new book or two every WEEK.  Romance novels are a billion dollar industry.  Yet they are still treated like a deep dark secret.  Some bookstores do not put out or share a list of the current best sellers in the romance industry. Reading different papers that contain book reviews - often do not include romances - unless it is a small mention at the end or to the side.
My first romance books that I remember so clearly were Katherine Woodwiss’s novels, The Flame and the Flower and The Wolf and the Dove.  They were called bodice rippers at the time, denigrating their power with a negative connotation.  However, that has not stopped me or many others from passionately following our favorite romance authors and jumping on their newest books as soon as they are published.  My favorites:  JD Robb, Jayne Ann Krentz, Catherine Bybee, Chris Keniston, Amanda McKinney, Erica Ridley, Stephanie Laurens, Emily Windsor and so so many more!  Without Goodreads I would need a spreadsheet to keep them all in order.
Recently I read a quote (not that I can find again or tell you who said it) that said, we read romance because it is predictable and allows us to follow a happy journey, even when so many of us, do (or did) not have that same journey.  I am not sure I believe that is true for everyone, but I really like the quote.
Elise has sent in an interview this week with Carol Ross and her newest romance Wyoming Rodeo Rescue.  A wonderful romance novel…  She also sent in a guest review for a cozy mystery called Gone for the Gouda.
Thank you for all your lovely responses to my last blog.  A shout out to Pauline for her understanding and positiveness.  You are right Pauline, reading is a huge benefit and love of mine!
Books this week:

Be Your Everything by Catherine Bybee

Giggly bouffant-wigged 4’11” Cockney sex kitten. Gifted comedic actress. Fierce but vulnerable soap opera matriarch. Durable old-school British show biz royalty. Personification of East End “Pearly Queen” grit. Farewell to “Babs”, the much-loved Dame Barbara Windsor (née Barbara Ann Deeks, 6 August 1937 – 10 December 2020). I note with bemusement that none of her obituaries seem to mention Too Hot to Handle (1960), the lurid British-made sexploitation thriller starring Jayne Mansfield, in which young starlet Windsor played a stripper called Ponytail! (An image of Windsor in this role is used in the current Lobotomy Room flyer). Understandably, all the television tributes include a clip of Windsor as Eastenders’ Peggy Mitchell roaring, “Get out of my pub!” She also had an extremely idiosyncratic way of pronouncing the name Frank as “Fur-wank.”

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL IN THE PALACE: IMPERIAL FAMILY MAKE APPEARANCE ON WHAT WOULD BE PRINCESS SUSANNA’S 25TH BIRTHDAY
Tumblr media
(Above: A vigil shrine set up with the most recent poster of Princess Susanna)
NEWCREST CITY --
It should have been a happy occasion. Tonight, the Imperial Family appeared outside the front doors of the palace. Emperor Eric addressed the crowds that have come from all over the country to attend this vigil:
“Today should have been a happy occasion for us, as Sue would have turned 25. However, the tragedies that have befallen us on the night of 6 July 2016 have prevented that. Tonight, as we have every year since, we come together in hopes that someone may, not only know where she may be, but to hopefully light her way home. We come together not only as citizens, but as an extended family to do so.”
Tumblr media
In attendance were The Emperor and Empress, Their Imperial Highnesses Princesses Melaura and Kaya, Her Grace Arista Presley, The Duchess of Dalme, and His Majesty King Arden of Lunaria.
Tumblr media
Seemed all of the participants, including Their Majesties, were crying, or on the verge of tears tonight. According to sources, Their Majesties consider this the hardest occasion to plan each year. It seems to be a thousand times harder because of the drama revolving Princess Kaya’s divorce from Efren Aquino, and sending Princess Whitney and Prince Joseph to rehab.
Tumblr media
In an interview shortly before her disappearance, Princess Susanna has said that out of all three of her older sisters, she has always been closest to Melaura, who, tonight, is seen weeping heavily, while her wife, Arista, is holding back tears herself.
Tumblr media
In a recent interview, Princess Kaya has stated that she wished her “beloved little sister” would send her a sign as to what to do next in her life. After her divorce from Efren Aquino, and his subsequent remarriage, she has stated that although living single with two children and her niece Princess Jayne has brought her a calmer peace of mind, she wishes that she could see her sister again. Although they’d had their differences, Kaya further went on to state that Susanna and their parents visited her home while she was pregnant with son Robby, and while there, the two sisters discussed their differences and made peace with one another. What she didn’t expect, was for the next five years to be this difficult.
Tumblr media
When his father, King Vincent, ordered a search party for Susanna in the entire capital of Lunaria, King Arden was already besotted with worry for wife Calliana, who had just been stabbed, and had passed away the next morning. He didn’t learn of his goddaughter’s disappearance until his sister, Queen Ashli of Windsor, and her husband King Dante, arrived back in Lunaria the day before the Crown Princess’ funeral. Since then, he’d been working with Empress Katrina tirelessly to help find her, travelling back and forth to Newcrest City. Although his son, Crown Prince Nicholas, could not attend the candlelight vigil tonight, he sends this statement:
“I’ve known Susanna since we were both babies, and this is not how we envisioned celebrating her birthday. Every June 24th, since she vanished, Aunt Reena brings my siblings and I together to reminisce about our time with her. With that, we just have one thing to say: Please come home, Sue. Five years is long enough to be gone. The constant nightmares that lurk within our families since that horrifying night’s reached its peak. We all beg you to come home.”
Here’s to hoping we all get more answers soon.
