Some time later, Idril said, "My love, will you come outside? The Moon has risen, and shines his rays upon the snow on this clear night. I think we should see it, and greet the new year together." "We will keep you warm," Maeglin assured him. Idril took her great ice-blue cloak from where it hung on a peg and draped it upon Tuor, then took up one side and covered Maeglin with it, and with the other side covered herself. "There," said she. "We will be just fine." Tuor took both their hands as they went out into the cold, but with them on either side of him he barely felt the chill. The moonlight illuminated the snow-covered gardens and made all things glow, but he could hardly spare the sky a glance, when the brightest stars already had their arms around him.

This is for my unwritten fics game, responding to @JaztheBard's ask on "The Love of a Parent."

So, this story is very firmly about Elrond and his weird parents, none of whom are supposed to be in the world any more (M&M are dead, Earendil and Elwing are forbidden from setting foot on Arda). Of course, none of this stops Elrond's parents from wanting to be involved in his life, and making sure nothing bad happens to him.

Gil-Estel always seems to appear on the dark nights when Elrond's grief catches up to him, or when he's struggling to find hope. The birds of Lindon– and later, Rivendell– often give him things, little tokens, some of which are very obviously from Valinor. Elrond doesn't sail often, but when he does, the sea always seems to welcome him, calm and gentle. The strange, unearthly songs that seem to follow him out on the water unnerve most people, but Elrond finds them comforting. He gets caught up in orc attacks a few times, in the Second and Third Ages. Somehow, he never seems to get captured, or even badly injured. Neither he nor the people he's with really understand why. All they can remember is the smell of smoke and a flash of something that could not have been fire.

The actual plot of the story, however, is Elrond deciding to try and convince his parents (or at least, whatever is left of them) to come live with him in Rivendell. This includes, but is not limited to:

Elrond chasing a wraith (spirit? ghost? living flame?) that may or may not once have been the eldest son of Feanor through the woods

Arguments with the Valar about what constitutes fair labor practices for stars

Elrond spending a bunch of time in slightly shady dock towns tracking down rumors of a "wandering spirit" who roams the beaches

More arguments with the Valar, this time about how keeping incarnate beings (especially part-humans) from the world against their will is like, maybe kind of cruel

Several people finally getting to meet their grandchildren

A surprisingly peaceful family lunch in Rivendell's welcoming halls

Itarillë came from her tower, more lovely than the morning sun in her dress of blue silk and lace as her father led her to the altar where she would await her betrothed. She was veiled and her hair laid in many braids, with gems and pearls gleaming amidst the gold, and though he could not see her face Tuor knew she was smiling. Now Maeglin came along the aisle, dressed all in black and silver, his hair held up by a single comb, elaborately wrought, and when he halted before Itarillë they were as moon and sun, taking Tuor’s breath away with their beauty and the unearthly power that flowed from them. At last Turgon placed his daughter’s hand in Maeglin’s, who carefully lifted her veil, and Tuor could swear that his breath hitched when he beheld his bride’s face for the first time. The newlyweds kissed, a soft and chaste kiss, just the slow, lingering press of lips to lips, and Tuor could not say if the sweet, piercing agony in his heart was of desire or jealousy.

Often a forgotten middle child between the short story and novella, novelettes will be the focus of our next SWG book club on 25th-27th November hosted by Narya and polutropos. Submissions should be complete and in their entirety, and must meet the SWG criteria for a Silmarillion fanwork (these are pretty broad ... basically anything that isn't covered in detail in The Hobbit or the main body of The Lord of the Rings will qualify).

Sign-ups are now closed, but the book club is open to all who want to participate in the discussion! See below for the schedule.

Please endeavour to attend the sessions of at least two other authors. We won't enforce this as we know people will have other commitments throughout the weekend, but book clubs only work well when you are willing to engage with other fanworks besides your own!

You can participate in the discussions without signing up as an author if you prefer—there's no need to submit the form, and no minimum time commitment. Turn up to whichever sessions suit your schedule.
