Mushy Widmaier is a "modern jazz" piano player, but one with a certain undertone of both Haitian folklore and European art music - but all of it as ingredients of a digested and unified whole sounding unmistakably as Him. Mushy is capable of fitting in with groups of almost any stylistic observance, and takes a most active and creative part in the proceedings. He seems to master a vast repertory, whether jazz standards, Haitian folk songs, popular dance music or originals.

Based mainly on a self thought theoretic knowledge Mushy may apply anything from slight harmonic embellishments to a complete reharmonization including all kinds of extensions, substitutions and passing chords following each other. He realizes the specific possibility of the keyboard, not only regarding harmony but the subtle percussive potential of the instruments is just as important. A significant characteristic of Mushy individual style is his ability to set moods, structuralize the solos, to built those improvisations on Harmony derived from the theme but most of the time not being a clear form of repetition of the theme framework. Sometimes even recreating original melody (in the interpretations of folk songs), sometimes surprising, sometimes witty, where, those lead to a complete remodeling beyond recognition that any song may undergo being exposed to his perception.

The attendant serenity and maturity during later years with no record productions of his own since his last album “KOTE’OU” are certainly not attempts of explaining away anything like artistic stagnation. On the contrary, Mushy continues to expand his musical language. He is not just staying on firm ground but is, as any creative musician taking risks every now and then. Important achievements as a composer and arranger have been music written for Ballets, Theatre Pieces, Poetries and Documentaries. These works are revealing more facets at each hearing.

Established as the enfant terrible of Haitian music, Mushy Widmaier embarked on a period of research into ways of writing music that would certainly shake the Haitian music tradition, the so-called “School of the New Generation” starting in 1982 , named after His Band Zekle was devoted to the ideals of changes and eradications that would emerge from any evoluting society. And most of all for him, it has been a main goal in his musical life to fight for the acceptance of all musical genres in Haiti as being theirs. As he concluded one of his lectures on “Haitian dance: history and tradition.”:

“Haitian Music is, Song, Classical, Root, Dance, Contemporary, Traditional, Jazz and all musical genres originated from the Haitian soul. This variety constitute the Opera of our History.”

This here is Chef Randy at my job. Michael and Chef became fast friends the first day they met (Michael often comes up with me to work when I have something come up last minute) they bonded over jazz music and sports and life. Randy ALWAYS asks about Michael and has his sports schedule on his refrigerator in the off chance he's not working he'll come out to see him play music. Last month Randy cleaned out his garage and came in with a box full of records for Michael to listen to with his favorite jazz musicians. And yesterday he came back from the Harlem Jazz Festival and walked in my office with a gift for Michael (the tshirt Mic is wearing) when I told Michael I had to stop by the job today he asked if Randy was going to be there and put on the shirt he gifted him. I went into the kitchen to tell Randy his friend was here and they both hugged and started to chat it up. Randy is a great story teller with an amazing heart, he says phrases like "young cat" and "young brother" and is super cool in that 70s kind of way. In Kassel fand ein Konzert statt, das ich unbedingt sehen wollte. Es spielte das Sun Ra Arkestra. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Band, die Free Jazz spielt, so denke ich jedenfalls, mir fehlt da das Fachwissen. Mich interessiert mehr die Geschichte drumherum. Das Arkestra wurde in den Fünfzigern von einem schwarzen Musiker gegründet, der sich nach dem Sonnengott Sun Ra nannte und behauptete, er stamme vom Planeten Saturn. Dazu trug er Kopfschmuck wie aus dem Pergamon-Museum geklaut, goldene Masken mit langen Schnäbeln dran, Nemes-Kopftücher mit Uräusschlangen, und bodenlange Umhänge in Galaxiefarben. So war es offenbar Mode auf dem Saturn. Die Musik klang ähnlich.

Sun Ra ist längst tot; aber das Arkestra gibt es noch, und einer, der von Anfang an dabei ist, also wirklich seit mehr als sechzig Jahren, leitet es: Marshall Allen, er wird in ein paar Tagen 95. Der Greis spielt unerschütterlich seine Instrumente, zum Beispiel Altsaxophon und Blaswandler; letzteres pfeift wie die Bordelektronik in einem abstürzenden Raumschiff, oder so ähnlich.

Ich fand mich also abends im Kasseler »Theaterstübchen« ein. Ein kleiner Keller, schummriges Licht fiel auf anscheinend typische Sun-Ra-Fans, Männer jenseits der Fünfzig. Sie hatten liebe Gesichter, wie bei Jazzfans so üblich. Auf der Bühne stand mindestens ein Dutzend Notenpulte, darauf Blätter mit handschriftlich notierten Noten. Ich hatte Zeit, sie mir anzusehen, denn die Musiker verspäteten sich. Die Hälfte von ihnen hatte sich verfahren.

Dann kamen sie aber. Zwölf oder vierzehn Männer und eine Frau in paillettenbesetzten Umhängen, kirschrot, azurblau, gülden, auf dem Kopf kleinere oder größere Mützchen, einer trug eine Art Mitra mit Bommel, ein anderer spaghettidünne Rastas unter einer silbrigen Filigrankappe. Der Tenorsaxophonist hatte eine dicke Mappe dabei, die er zu seinen Füßen verstaute, um im Laufe des Abends immer wieder darin zu blättern – es befand sich alles mögliche darin, Bilder, Zeitungsausschnitte –, um hin und wieder ein Notenblatt herauszuziehen. Ich konnte das genau sehen, denn ich saß etwa einen Meter entfernt.

Mit Einsetzen der Musik geschah etwas Unvorhergesehenes: Ich verstand etwas. Während die instrumentalen Stücke mir zuvor wie eine Mondlandschaft vorgekommen waren, die ich zwar mit Interesse durchschritt, aber nicht deuten konnte, war es nun so, als lernte ich sie langsam kennen, einen tiefen von einem flachen Krater zu unterscheiden, eine Reihe von sehr kleinen, sehr spitzen Bergen kurios zu finden, einen Pfad zwischen Steinbrocken zu entdecken. Das lag wahrscheinlich daran, dass ich die Musiker beim Spielen sah. Sie stimmten viel mit Blicken und Handzeichen ab, und schon daran, wer wen erwartungsvoll ansah, konnte man etwas erkennen über die Richtung, die das Stück gleich nehmen würde. Zu besonders gelungenen Soli gratulierten die Musiker einander mit Lachen, Tanzen, Augen nach innen drehen; einmal machte aber auch der Tenorsaxophonist die Halsabschneider-Geste in Richtung des Hornisten, als der mit seinem allzu gefälligen Melodie-Solo gar nicht mehr aufhören wollte.

Später zogen einige der Musiker tutend, blasend, flötend durch die Stuhlreihen im Keller. Dicht neben mir kam der Posaunist zu stehen. Der Trichter seines Instruments zielte direkt auf mein Ohr. Da hinein posaunte der Mann seine saturnischen Stakkati. Mir gefiel’s. Doch gerade als ich ein Foto in das schwarze Loch des Trichters hinein machen wollte, setzte sich der Zug der Musikanten wieder in Bewegung, und der Posaunist wirbelte an mir vorbei. Mein Foto zeigt seinen glitzernden Umhang im Flug, eine Milchstraße aus Pailletten.

Trumslagaren och kompositören Jojo Djeridi har frilansat som musiker i 35 år som sideman med de allra största musikerna. 2020 släppte han sin debut skiva i eget namn. Jojo har omgivit sig med idel legender: Klarinettisten Krister Andersson är ett av de tyngsta svenska namnen, basisten Hans Backenroth är en av Skandinaviens främsta och även pianisten Lars Jansson räknas som ett av Sveriges främsta inom jazz. Var och en har satt avtryck i jazzvärlden.

Medlemmarna är alla välkända för svenska och europeiska jazzfans och nu har de skapat ett eget fantasidjur, ett lustprojekt där alla får komma till tals och ingen håller i pekpinnen. New to me Eighty-Eights jazz SACD of trumpeter Eddie Henderson’s “So What” album. Featuring Henderson, Bob Berg on sax, David Kikoski on piano, Ed Howard on bass, and either Billy Hart or Victor Lewis on drums. Recorded in 2002 by David Baker (which should perk up any jazzfan’s ears), it features tunes by Miles Davis (two of his and another two associated with him), two by Wayne Shorter, two by Thelonious Monk, and one by Paul Robeson. Playing is excellent, very much in the Miles tradition. Sound is well above average, no real surprise coming from Eighty-Eights. Mostly available on the used market, but not overly expensive, this is a highly enjoyable jazz recording.
