How do the ROs feel about cuddle naps? I just took a nap and it was *chef's kiss*

Jefferson: Not really a nap person himself, he tends to be too busy for that, but if MC wanted him next to them while they napped, he’d be more than happy to cuddle with them!

Merrill: This sounds like a very nice idea to him!  ...in theory.  Unfortunately he takes forever to fall asleep and then stays asleep.  He’d love to nap with MC, but he’ll have to content himself with just cuddling them.

Clara: Yes.  Just, yes.  She has a much easier time falling asleep, so she’s all for this.  She makes herself very nice and comfortable cuddling with MC, and, while it’s a much more quiet activity than she’s used to, it’s nice 😌

Modesty: She says she’s not a napper.  This is a lie and she’ll curl up with MC at the drop of a hat.  But it has to be in private because she got poked in the stomach one too many times in her teens by Rance.

Newt: On a work day?  Absolutely not.  On an off-day?  Absolutely.  That just means that he has more energy for stargazing that night 👀 he’s still an octopus, cuddling them very tightly.

Max: They’re surprisingly cool with just chilling for an afternoon!  They might not fully fall asleep, but they’d be happy to hang with MC while they nap.

SUMMARY The story centers on Diana “Sugar” Hill (Bey), a photographer in Houston whose boyfriend, nightclub owner Langston (Larry D. Johnson), has been killed by mob boss Morgan (Robert Quarry) and his men when he refused to sell the club to Morgan. Sugar seeks the help of a former voodoo queen named Mama Maitresse (Zara Cully) to take revenge on Morgan and his thugs. Mama summons the voodoo lord of the dead, Baron Samedi (Don Pedro Colley), who enlists his army of zombies to destroy the men who killed Langston and now want the club. Investigating the killings is Sugar’s former boyfriend, police Lt. Valentine (Richard Lawson).

DEVELOPMENT/PRODUCTION The film, budgeted at $350,000, was shot on location in Houston at such locations as the Heights branch of the Houston Public Library (a historical landmark), used in the film as a “Voodoo Institute”. Sugar Hill was the last film Quarry did for AIP, after a run that included the Count Yorga movies. Also appearing in the film was Cully, who played Mama Jefferson on the TV show The Jeffersons. Charles P. Robinson, known for his role as Mac Robinson on NBC’s Night Court, portrayed the character of Fabulous. Hank Edds created the makeup effects for the zombies in the film.

Actress Marki Bey “researched her part among various voodoo cults in and around the L.A. environs; thereby acquiring the proper authoritative menace to make her role as a voodoo high priestess believable.”

Rumor has it that the afro-style hairdo worn by the character Diana Hill during the zombie attack sequences was because Marki Bey didn’t look “black enough” while wearing her hair flat and relaxed.

Actor Don Pedro Colley also did extensive research in the voodoo practices from Haiti for his role as Baron Samedi. According to Colley, “This character was based more or less on the actual voodoo character that comes from Haiti…Papa Legre, who is all powerful, all omnipotent. Throughout the voodoo culture Papa Legre is the one single heavyweight dude.”

I’m supposed to be playing a voodoo god rising from the grave with an army of zombies. So I said, “Well, let me go back into my old theater bag of tricks here and do what I’m supposed to do. Let me do a lot of research.’ So I got several books from the library. One was written by two anthropologists that had studied voodoo religions around the world and another was written by a practitioner of voodoo from Haiti. This character was based more or less on the actual voodoo character that comes from Haiti. The Haitian characters name is Papa Legre, who is all powerful, all omnipotent. Throughout the voodoo culture Papa Legre is the one single heavyweight dude. My character’s name was Baron Samedi. It went through how the rituals of voodoo work. For those who believe in it, things can actually happen, good or bad. A woman hates her old man so she goes through a voodoo priestess who puts a hex on him and he ends up dying of a horrible disease or a heart attack or a car crash. By filling a glass with alcohol and burning chicken feathers and spiders and lighting incense and doing chants on a daily basis. The two scientists related voodoo rituals to others rituals that take place in other religions, such as the Catholic religion, the burning of the incense, the drinking of the blood, the wafer, the bread of God. These are rituals that are really taken right out of voodoo rituals. And relating the singing from the Baptist or Episcopalian or Presbyterian religions, even the Muslims and the Sikhs, all of the rituals all had a basis in the early African voodoo tribal religion that came west from the tribes of Africa when the slaves were brought. So I said, ‘I’ve now got all this information. I’m going to make Baron Samedi scary, boy is he going to be scary.””

Robert Quarry reflects on making “Sugar Hill”. The producer and the director Paul Maslansky were both white, and, of course, it was an all-black movie. They had a black actor set for the part, but they got rid of him, and Sam sent me in to take the part. So I walked in as ‘Mr. Whitey’ to play the head of the Mafia in Houston, which is where they shot it. I didn’t give a shit. They paid me. And during the shoot, my rich white friends in Houston wouldn’t call me because they thought I’d bring somebody black to lunch with me. The racism was that subtle. And, of course, they hired so many blacks for the movie, and here I was saying things like ‘nigger’ and ‘jig’ and ‘jungle bunny.’ The extras who weren’t actors were going to kill me because they thought I was a big racist. But I won them over eventually. And we all laughed so hard. I’d tell them all on the set, ‘Okay, easy fellas, get ready because I’m going to say the ‘n’ word again.” One of the locations was this mansion that looked like it had been abandoned for a hundred years. It even had an elevator in it. It had been abandoned for ten or fifteen years. The place was full of cobwebs and dust, it was really quite neat. The only thing I objected to is, here I am starring in this movie and I’m being treated like a peon. Here they are paying me 750 dollars a week and I’m starring in this bloody mess. Union law states that when the performers travel, they travel first class and they stay in a first class hotel and when they work on the set they have a first class dressing room. In Houston, I didn’t have any dressing room. It was like 95% humidity. It was 95 degrees every day. They were talking about having me stand behind a car in the street to change clothes. Forget it! So I went out and rented a forty foot motor home and I drove it to the set and the producer went bugo, he went off – ‘You can’t do that! You can’t drive that here! We have to put a union driver on that. We have to pay the union drivers a thousand a week and…’ And I said, ‘Wait a minute. Are you telling me that a driver of my motor home makes more money a week than I do and I’m starring in this piece of shit!?” I said, ‘I’m going to keep this until you provide me with a dressing room and in the mean time I’m calling the union and letting them know exactly what you people are doing down here.’ That’s what they did at American International. They exploited everybody.

The performers playing the zombies in Sugar Hill wore ping pong balls cut in half over their eyes, creating the cartoonish, yet eerie effect. Other sources say the eyes were created with broken-off spoon halves.

how does everyone smile? and what are their laughs like?

Jefferson: He has these very calm, gentle smiles, the kind you can always tell are genuine.  Very serene. His laugh is a warm chuckle that he pretends to hide behind his fist.

Merrill: He hides his smiles behind his hand, but they’re sweet, nervous smiles that waver at first but eventually settle if he’s comfortable.  His laugh is an anxious giggle that devolves into a stuttering laughing fit if it goes on too long.

Clara: She smiles with all her teeth, and her smiles are contagious. She has one crooked tooth in the front, but she doesn’t care.  She throws her head back when she laughs and they’re as contagious as her smiles.

Modesty: She has very sly smiles that don’t show teeth.  Very catlike.  Her laugh is the complete opposite, a loud, hiccupping chortle; she rarely laughs this way though.

Newt: He has this toothy smirk that he inherited from his dad that’s almost wolfish.  His laugh sort of alternates between snickers and snorts, and it gets out of control very easily.

Max: They have an open mouthed grin that always looks like they’re ready to laugh.  They have a gap in their front teeth but, like Clara, they don’t care.  Their laugh is a loud, echoing laugh that you can hear halfway across the airship terminal.

RO Portraits: Jefferson Colley

And we have liftoff. The first RO portrait is done, and it's Jefferson Colley!! I first drew him three years ago, and it feels so good to 1) see how much my art has grown, and 2) see this boy again 🥺

Jefferson was the very first character I conceptualized for SURVEYOR, so he's very near and dear to my heart. The amount of love I'm seeing for him among the folks I'm talking to is amazing.

I hope to have Merrill's portrait done tomorrow (today? It's 1 in the morning WHOOPS) and then I'll move on to Clara, and then Modesty, and on down the line! Once the RO portraits are done, I hope to do some art for the major NPCs like Lucrezia, Polly, Jacob, and more!

Jefferson: Likes to give forehead kisses and knuckle kisses; likes being kissed on his cheek the most, it’s a classic.

Merrill: Prefers to give kisses on the cheek, or on the nose if he’s feeling cute ;) neck kisses and kisses to the inside of the wrist make him weak though 😍

Clara: Gives kisses everywhere but particularly likes giving cheek kisses, the kind where she can smush her face against MC’s; likes receiving tummy kisses :)

Modesty: Likes giving them on the lips, no need to get really fancy, but if MC wanted to kiss her along her collarbone and on her shoulders 😏

Newt: Prefers giving kisses along the jawline and neck, but receiving he’s incredibly partial to tummy and thigh kisses :))

Max: Gives kisses along the shoulder blades and the back of the neck, and they like being kissed on the hands and near their prosthetic joint.

Hey bee what were the ROs like as children?

Hmmm, a very interesting question :) just as a general worldbuilding note, it’s very common for children to take on apprenticeships starting in their early teens – these are more like afterschool activities or may take the place of school, and they serve as a way for kids to play around with things they might like to do as they get older. This... may or may not have been based on something my sister's high school did.

Jefferson was a very precocious but friendly child. He and his younger sibling Tommie were raised by their mother. He became interested in fashion at a very young age, and his toys became the unwitting subjects of his early forays. He was very attached to Tommie almost immediately, and he has remained a dedicated older brother to this day. He got his first apprenticeship when he was 13, learning the ropes, er, threads at the Empress Designs Clothing Boutique. His old mentor actually still recommends him to clients.

Merrill was a very anxious and quiet child. He was raised by his paternal grandfathers after [REDACTED]. Merrill constantly clung to his Grandfather’s coattails, but his Granda would always eventually coax him away with ice cream and swing records. He was easily occupied with books and stereoscopes, but he had few friends. He was encouraged by his grandfathers to take a certification course at the Freerunners’ Guild in his teens to help him open up, and he took to it like a duck to water.

Clara was a rambunctious and adventurous child. She was raised by her three parents. She loved exploring, spending most of her early days finding every single nook and cranny she could in her neighborhood. She was extremely popular among the other children and always had a small parade of kids following her. She participated in a lot of group sports and other activities, and she has a good dozen or so certifications from her early teens.

Modesty was a proud, very prim child. She and her oldest brother Rance (Temperance), her older brother Val (Valiant), and her younger sisters Dee (Charity) and Mercy were raised by their parents. From her early childhood, Modesty was (ironically) taught to be proud of who she was. She took these lessons in stride, but she quickly learned that clerks, while important to the background, usually didn’t get their names put in history books. She’s strove to change that ever since.

Newt was a quiet but curious child. He was raised by his parents with a lot of assistance from his maternal aunt, Polly Mockett. He spent a lot of time at the Science Commons as a kid, but his favorite spot was always the Planetarium. He spent an entire summer reading every astronomy book he could get his hands on and staying outside all night to watch the stars. When he was 14, he finally got apprenticed there. At 16, he was offered a paying job, and he took it.

Max was an energetic and mechanically inclined child. They and their young sister Percy (Persephone) were raised by their parents. They were always tinkering with anything and everything, and they cannibalized their family’s appliances more than once. Unfortunately, they and their family were in a carriage accident when Max was ten – this was the accident where Max lost their leg. Max was the most unlucky of the group, and they are mostly glad that their sister, who was four, was relatively unharmed.

How would the ROs react if MC came in the room looking worried, took the RO's face in their hands and said "oh no, this isn't good!". When the ROs ask what's wrong, MC says "you haven't met your daily kiss quota yet!! We gotta fix that!" then peppers the RO's face with smooches 😏💕

Jefferson: He gets very worried until MC drops the line.  Smirks and covers their hands with his.  “How awful.  ‘Twould be a terrible thing to not make that quota.  I’ll have to make sure to help you meet your quota, my love.”

Merrill: Not gonna lie, he gets really scared seeing that worried face and thinks he did something wrong for a second.  But once they explain, his shoulders relax and he smiles softly.  “I didn’t realize I was so far behind.  Thank you for helping me keep up, sweetheart.”

Clara: Two can play at this game.  “Oh really?  Well, if I’m not mistaken, you haven’t met your daily kiss quota either, sweetie.  Oh, have you met you daily nose boop quota?  No?  Gotta fix that too!”

Modesty: She braces herself but is pleasantly surprised when it comes out.  “You know you don’t need and excuse to kiss me at home, right, babe?”

Newt: He desperately, desperately tries to stay focused on what he was doing, but he fails at that after, like, kiss no. 4.  “You win, you win!  Should I be keeping a tally, my sun?”

Max: They stop MC, like, half a second before the first kiss even connects.  “Hon’, I love ya, but let me wash my face first at least, yeah?”  They’ll let MC fill that quota twice over in payment for the wait though 😏

Jefferson Colley (he/him; asexual demiromantic): the GSG's head merchant (read: tailor) who welcomes the MC into the Guild with open arms. A very kind and polite man, Jefferson is known for being extremely fashion forward, and he prides himself on mixing the Guild's need for function with the fashion of the time.

Merrill Redsmith (he/him; bisexual): the former Lead Field Surveyor who was expelled from the Guild under circumstances you are not privy to, now one of the MC's quote-unquote rivals. A generally soft-spoken but paranoid man, Merrill seemingly refuses to accept his expulsion from the Guild, though he has remained a neutral party… until now.

Clara Turner (she/her; bisexual): the unofficial Lead Field Surveyor and the MC's trainer in the ways of surveying. A bright and energetic young woman, Clara considers herself a woman of progress, always trying new things -- though, she'll admit that maybetrying to fit two people on a monowheel wasn't the best idea.

Modesty Dawkins (she/her; demisexual biromantic): an aspiring Surveyor who has been trying to get recruited by GSG for years and one of the MC's more ardent rivals. A hardworking and short-tempered woman, Modesty is determined to get her small-family-of-clerks' name into the history books.

Newton 'Newt' Keeler (he/they; gray-ace biromantic): the Planetarium's Assistant Curator at the Conservatory and one of the MC's contact. A sarcastic and cynical young person, Newt bears the brunt of the work at the Planetarium and feels like him and his work are underappreciated by his ever-absent superiors.

Max Rowley (they/them; bisexual): one of the many airship mechanics employed at the Ender McLean Airship Terminal and one of the MC's contacts. A fast-talking and talented young person, Max dreams of one day becoming an airship racer -- of course, airship racing needs to become a thing first, hey, do you want to see their prototype?!
