I get why Jenna D'Sora broke up with Data. It's obvious that she needed someone to whom romance and emotional reactions came naturally. I think a lot of fans in love with Data would find the reality of that type of relationship hard to deal with.
Nevertheless, I wish more people could see that Data is far from emotionless. To me, he reminds me of someone who's neurodivergent. He cares about people and shows it the only ways he knows how, by studying literature, human reactions, etc. But it always comes across as just a bit off, and that's hard for a lot of people to take and understand.

Props to Brent Spiner for triggering tf outta me as Data in "In Theory" bc I've dated the exact type of subtly controlling, presumptuous, disingenuously simpering flatterer w no previous romantic experience that he programmed. It was godawful and constantly made me feel the same repulsion as I did watching my straightforward yet courteous, morally pristine infodumping genius baby boy pretending to be the weird douchebag he has by all accounts correctly gathered Jenna to have a history of interest in and who she has attempted to shape him into instead of loving the amazing man who he has demonstrated himself to be.
Like who tf goes "this guy is an amazing listener and communicator, honest to a fault, cares deeply for and protects with his life both his friends and complete strangers, AND keeps his apartment sparkling clean. I should insist he make assumptions about what I say instead of believing me at face value, ask him to lie about who he is to appease me specifically, and drop by unannounced thereby showing inconsideration for his time in order to gift him huge clunky impractical shit he didn't ask for all to make his place more to my sloppy liking"?!?!
ANYWAY that's my life, thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed it because I know I did

i watched TNG "In Theory" for the first time and honestly i think they kind of missed the mark on the point of the episode. it felt as if the writers were trying to say "Data is incapable of having romantic feelings", but really what I got from it was "he's not really into Jenna D'Sora but felt like he had to take this opportunity because he wants to Learn Things and theyre just not compatible". he didnt really grow from this episode LOL. theyve SHOWN it's possible for him to feel these things it's just in his own way. need i remind you again of his Tasha Yar Posthumous Hologram

DOSSIER CHEAT SHEET
LEGAL NAME: Data Soong
NICKNAME[S]: He doesn't have one, but would love to have one. So, send in your best Data nicknames for mah boi! (Although I like the one Mirror!Barclay gave him in a personal log, which is "Picard's pet android.")
DATE OF BIRTH ACTIVATION: February 2, 2338
GENDER: Male
PLACE OF BIRTH ACTIVATION: Omicron Theta colony
CURRENTLY LIVING: On the U.S.S. Enterprise
SPOKEN LANGUAGES: English, French, binary, and probably a lot more (Earth languages as well as alien languages). This funky lil' android is literally a walking ChatGPT, albeit more advanced.
EDUCATION: Starfleet Academy.
HAIR COLOR: Depends on the lighting; sometimes it's dark brown / brown, at other times, it's auburn.
EYE COLOR: A greenish yellow (or chartreuse, according to Google).
HEIGHT: 1.80 / 5'9''
WEIGHT: 100 kg
FAMILY INFORMATION
SIBLING[S]: B-4 and Lore, his older brothers (and Altan Inigo Soong, I suppose, although I'd like to think of him as Data's half-brother, since Juliana never mentioned him, so he might have had a different mother? God knows what Noonian has been up to in that weird jungle hideout of him).
PARENT[S]: Doctor Noonian Soong and Juliana Soong
RELATIVE[S]: Adam Soong, Arik Soong, and Ira Graves, but idk if he even qualifies lol.
CHILDREN: Lal, Dahj and Soji (and technically an entire planet of androids, but let's not over-complicate things).
PET[S]: SPOT! His precious cat!
RELATIONSHIP INFORMATION
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Tbh, I've thought about this a lot, but never wrote it down as a proper headcanon; I'd like Data to represent the minority and state that he's aromantic — he's possibly bordering on the asexuality spectrum as well. And as for his preference, he doesn't have one; not only does his programming prohibit him from discriminating between genders and withhold him from engaging in favouritism, he's also genuinely fascinated by everyone. In other words, he doesn't nurture a strong preference for a specific gender. However, since he's aromantic he's not really interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with anyone; it's primarily friendships he's after, familial or platonic.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Data is a single bean, just living his best life with his beloved cat.
SINCE WHEN: And this is where we ignore the whole romantic escapade with Jenna D'Sora lol. So, N/A (Or since his date of activation).

Season 4 Episode 25 In Theory
Data is working on torpedoes while talking with Jenna D'Sora, a crewmate aboard the Enterprise. Data assists D'Sora reminding her why she broke up with her previous boyfriend and complimenting her musical abilities. The two are working together when D'Sora kisses Data on the lips. After consulting various other crew members Data decides to pursue a relationship with her, bringing her flowers and complimenting her, running a program specifically to court her. While this has been going on, the portion of space the Enterprise has been flying through is heavier in dark matter.
They head deeper into the nebula to find the planet where life is said to appear only to be met with further distortions aboard the Enterprise. Data flails with romance attempting to use various learned tactics, quoting phrases, and instigating a lover's quarrel in order to give the appearance of romance. D'Sora is caught off guard by the erratic behaviors questioning what Data is doing while he attempts to calmly answer.
Data identifies the distortions on the ship as dark matter pockets and after one such pocket kills a crew mate it is determined the best way to predict and avoid them is for someone to fly a shuttle out ahead of the Enterprise to scan and earn the ship before they hit them. Picard elects to be the pilot, flying the shuttle ahead of the ship allowing the Enterprise to narrowly escape the nebula. Meanwhile, put off by his erratic but calm approach to their relationship D'Sora decides to break things off with Data informing him it is the lack of emotion that puts her off. Data takes this information neutrally informing her he will delete the romantic program he had installed.
While many episodes surround Data having emotions despite not actually having any, this episode deals with either the actual struggles he deals with as an android. It is in the way he lists her positive traits to Guinan valuing her as a worker and person. It is the careful yet intentional nature with which he pursues the relationship, checking in with everyone and getting second opinions. One could approach this episode with either a neurodivergent lens or an aro/ace one. Communication and navigation of relationships can be hard, I saw Data trying his best to accommodate D'Sora's needs using literal scripts and input in an attempt to be a caring partner for him. The neutrality with which he accepted D'Sora breaking up with him struck a chord within me. He was trying his best for her, actively learning and taking her criticisms into account while she ultimately breaks up with him for being too robotic.

fanific writer questions 19 & 35
35 Questions for Fanfic Writers
Do you prefer canon-compliant, AUs, or something in-between?
I'd say mostly canon-compliant. I usually like to work within the canon stuff, while adding into it with my pairings and headcanons. For instance, with Classic Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures, Fourth Doctor and Sarah are a couple. I have them separate in "Hand of Fear" like in canon, and not see each other again until post-SJA.
Another example with TNG, Data's canon first attempt at a romantic relationship is with Jenna D'Sora, so I don't have him and Geordi get together until after that.
Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!
A background detail for my wip "Deal with a Devil". I don't know if I'll somehow mention this in the story itself, but In the canon timeline, this story takes place soon before "DS9: In the Pale Moonlight."
So I have Data calling Garak for advice for dealing with the devil that is Kivas Fajo for this mission, shortly before Garak has to be the devil for SIsko in order to bring the Romulans into the war on their side.
Something something about parallels and all that :P

I’ve rewatched “In theory” (Star Trek: The Next Generation, season 4, episode 25). (Spoilers!) It’s a “Data accidentally got a girlfriend and tries to be a perfect partner” he goes around seeking for advice like Wesley did in one of the earlier seasons. Really – he asks Geordi, Guinan, Worf and Riker, they all give very different information, Data tries to follow Riker’s. He also reads romance books and generally tries to be there for her. The problem is, he can’t “feel” her: she got in a relationship with him after she broke up with her boyfriend because he wasn’t empathetic enough and didn’t give her the emotions “back”. Data tried to comfort her through her break up and she thought that she can start the relationship with him. He agreed, he created a whole new romantic program for her, but she still felt that he wasn’t acting naturally, they even quarrelled, however, it was also programmed by Data. At the end of the episode, she collects all her thoughts and breaks up with Data, realizing that his kindness and caring aren’t enough for her. P.S. Of course, there’s some actual sci-fi story going on, but it feels so much on the background and unimportant, I’m not even going to talk about it.
