Brooch
Marcus & Co. (New York City, New York)
c.1900
This exquisite brooch is one of the few extant examples of plique-à-jour jewelry made by the New York firm of Marcus & Co., whose reputation at its prime rivaled that of Tiffany & Co. Herman Marcus (1828–99), a German–born and Dresden–trained jeweler, arrived in New York in 1850 and worked for a number of prestigious firms before establishing Marcus & Co. in 1892. Following his death, the company continued under the direction of his two sons, George Elder Marcus and William Marcus.
The brooch is a superb example of Marcus & Co.’s work in plique-à-jour enameling, in which the "cells" of color have no backing, allowing light to shine through the transparent enamel, thereby creating the effect of stained glass. One of the only jewelry firms of its day to succeed at this challenging technique, Marcus & Co. followed the lead of such innovative French designers as René Lalique. The sensitive 3-dimensional sculpting of the sweet pea blossoms and leaves, as well as the naturalistic coloring of the enamels, reflects the Art Nouveau aesthetic that prevailed at the turn of the century. Indeed, close parallels can be drawn with the brilliant naturalistic work of Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose oeuvre is so well represented in the Met’s collection.
The MET (Accession Number: Accession Number: 2016.107)

I found out the jeweler I got my engagement ring from is a raging antisemite. Obviously won't be purchasing anything else from them. Does anyone happen to know any jewish-owned jewelers for wedding bands? I'd like to specifically spend my money at a Jewish business after all this.
Oof, sorry this happened.

Stevie has never been a jewelry person. She had a nice pair of earrings once but lost them after a night of heavy drinking. Jewelry is just not a thing she ever thinks about. So when Patrick cornered her after the opening night curtain call and pressed a jewelry box into her hands and a kiss to her cheek, she was surprised.
Inside the box was a simple green pendant of looped metal and a note from Patrick that brought tears to her eyes.
She decides that maybe she can get used to the idea of having two best friends.

Just wrote a WOW (witnessing outstanding work) for myself lol
I told myself that I’m proud of me for not crying at every inconvenience.
Let’s see who notices first and who thinks it’s funny and who thinks otherwise.
I personally think it’s funny because I do outstanding work that no one seems to acknowledge.

so my birthday is in two months, and since i’m turning 30 i decided i could be a little extravagant with regard to birthday gifts to myself this year. and i just got the notification that my Extravagant Gift has shipped, way earlier than i anticipated.
i bought myself an “engagement ring”. i’m not engaged. i don’t think that’s in the cards for me. but i saw this ring ages ago and immediately thought it was the most beautiful ring i’d ever seen. and i kept going back to look at it, and then they had a sale for black friday...
i had been thinking for a while i wanted to buy myself a ring for my birthday, and i had been looking at just tons of different ones, but i just kept coming back to this one. and i kept having these nearly-subconscious objections to buying it, like, “you don’t want to get That Ring right now, don’t you want to save that to be your engagement ring?” and “wouldn’t it be a shame if someday you did get engaged and you didn’t like that ring as much as this one? so you should pick your next favorite.”
and one day i was looking at rings online yet again, still internally debating. and i realized that what those thoughts were really getting at was, “you have to settle for second best because you’re single.”
which is not a perspective that i want to give any sort of power to. i felt kind of silly when i put it into actual words and i feel kind of silly admitting it, but whatever, it’s not like i internalized that of my own free will. i’m not gonna deny myself nice things on the basis that i’m waiting for some hypothetical person to maybe someday give it to me. like. that’s bonkers. i have the money for it, and if i’m spending that kind of money it’s going to be on what i want, not my second choice because i reserved my first pick for a figment of my imagination.
it was projected to take about a month to make plus shipping time, so i hadn’t expected it to be ready, let alone shipped, until january, but right now the tracking number says it’ll be here on saturday, barring any delays. i’m very excited but also not looking forward to people assuming it’s an engagement ring. i’m planning to wear it on my right hand but that’s easy enough to mix up and in fairness, it looks like and is marketed as an engagement ring. so i’m anticipating a few (well intentioned, i’m sure) questions about it but like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I made some liver of sulfur and used it to darken all the low spots of the ring so now the pattern can be seen properly.
