Songs that Remind me of Jikook Part 1

While we wait impatiently for the Jikook travel show, I thought it might be fun to share song recs that remind us of Jikook beyond the classics: There For You, all the other GCF songs, Own It, Body Electric, Serendipity, Magic Shop, Still With You, ect. You can use these songs to add to your playlist or when you listen to them, you can think of Jikook too! I have three recommendations in this post.

1. Agora Hills by Doja Cat.

I know Doja is controversial and so is her partner BUT this song bangs y’all. The beat is nasty and the lyrics are so so Jikook coded (to me). Screen shot of one of the most Jikook-esque parts of the song but honestly the verses fit so well too. We know how much Jungkook and Jimin love to brag on each other and gush over each other. And sometimes they even get a little wild *cough Rosebowl and hickey gate and footsies*

2. Call it What You Want by Taylor Swift

This song is the only one in Taylor’s discography that is extremely Jikook coded to me. I screenshotted my favorite part but again, the whole song screams Jikook to me. The “trust him like a brother” lyric feels like a dig to anyone who screams that Jikook are brothers as a form of coping with the fact that they definitely aren’t. And I love the whole concept of Call It What You Want being about speculation about a romantic relationship and the two lovers don’t care you can call their bond whatever you want but they will still love and support each other. If that’s not Jikook idk what is.

3. Coma by Caroline Polachek

Okay, hear me out with this one because if you haven’t heard of Caroline Polachek (she’s the least mainstream on this list) then I promise you are missing out. Caroline is amazing. Shes definitely experimental, so if that isn’t your thing then you probably won’t like this gorgeous 5 minute song, but I’m obsessed with it. Her voice is so ethereal, the instrumental is busy but addicting and the lyrics are simple but effective as hell. Overall, the song gives a wholesome lovey dovey vibe that truly feels like you are floating. It reminds me of Jikook because when I listen to this I imagine this is how they feel being with each other for so many years and truly “I am you, you are me”. If you give this one a chance and love it, let me know. I stan Caroline so hard and think everyone should experience her genius. Her whole album Desire, I Want To Turn Into You top to bottom is an art pop masterpiece.

alright……i do have a question for u. ur blog name is “bangtan media thoughts” even though u said u don’t really care much about the group’s music or any of the members besides jimin and jungkook. and u obviously hold quite a lot of rage for all armys (even though it’s a huge group of ppl, not everyone thinks the same way). why run the blog at this point i truly dont get it or u could change the name to kpop media thoughts or something. im genuinely asking no malice

And to genuinely answer you with no malice, if you're interested in more analysis and I'm not delivering that as often as I used to, then I honestly recommend you to not look it up or unfollow. It's perfectly fine. I do the same with blogs that went in other directions because they stopped offering what I wanted. It's really not a big deal. And let's be real here, this is nothing but a blog on tumblr about BTS/KM/K-Pop, not a peer reviewed journal.

Anyway, in a completely unrelated fashion but connected to my apparent depart from the blog's purpose, this is my song rec for a Friday night.

I'm not really a vminie, other than that I enjoy their bond and sometimes blink several times in amazement at them, but if I could maybe build a little on what your last anon asked and maybe throw a few of my big vmin eyebrow raises into your ask box to maybe start a discussion? I honestly think it's really healthy for jikook shippers/believers/whatevers to get into the weeds on vmin ship tumblr or twt. You could pick any ship for what I'm about to explain, but taekookers tend to be explicitly nasty, yoonminers just straight up explicit, and the rest of the ships just don't have the presence to create a good deep dive (except for maybe namjin? who wants namjin deep dive blog recs?) But vminies are mostly normal. They think their ship is in love (or at least used to-- huge drop off in those blogs and twt accounts posting in the past year or so, for obvious reasons) and they base their theories around that. They're rarely super disparaging towards the other members, and the vmin bond is so open that they don't need to really create insane theories. They just vibe. They also seem to be handling the more recent proof that their ship isn't real extraordinarily well without falling into delusion. I would say none of the other big bts ships would do the same. (and I have proof tkkers wouldn't). But for anyone who really thinks Jikook is real (I'm like 75/25 myself), I think it's valuable to look another narrative, with a lot of genuine contradictions in it to the 'standard' jikook one, straight in the face and take in how perspective can change something. It's healthy. These spaces so quickly fall into echo chambers.

off the top of my head, my big vmin eyebrow raises:

vmin have zero physical boundaries. open affection, sometimes truly bafflingly so. all over eachother and almost never pull away. (jikooker: of course they don't pull away, they're not hiding anything. do you see the way jimin leaned so naturally into jk but then saw the camera--. vminie: vmin go 2 seconds without touching eachother challenge failed)

they literally acted out being boyfriends on more than one occasion (jikooker: it was s roleplay! you know how tae is! vminie: they're trying to tell us!)

4'oclock, scenery, and sweet night. 4'oclock is explicitly about jimin and has been confirmed so on MULTIPLE occasions by the members. That in and of itself is insane (i wrote a long long letter to the moon one night but it wasn't as beautiful as you PLUS namjoon's moonlight movie ref, whew), but if you then look at the lyrics to scenery and sweet night the lyrical parallels and common themes paint a pretty crazy picture. Vastly beyond any song jikookers have ever managed to tie to their ship, except for maybe the serendipity i am you you are me. (jikooker: tae is just a lazy songwriter of course he's using the same themes, you don't know his live. vminie: LOOK AT HIM ALL HIS SONGS ARE JIMIN CODED HES CRAZY)

I also think jikookers could use a solid rewatch of older bangtan content. I'm watching BV2 right now and the amount of time that Jimin spends hanging off Tae/they spend together is truly incredible. In Jikook spaces all I got out of it was a few scattered fragments of interaction (Jungkook spends WAY more time gravitating towards Seokjin in Hawaii at least by my read)

Do I think vmin is real? No, for obvious reasons. But I think paying attention to the way a ship can generate these narratives is important for all shippers.

Co-signed 100%. I always find discussing Jikook and Vmin and the difference in their dynamics really interesting. What I covered isn’t anywhere near the level of discussion I could go into, and a few followers I’ve exchanged DMs with know what I’m talking about lol.

I also need to watch the BV series again and have been planning to. It’ll be nice to watch them with fresh eyes.

As for actual published novels, the last one I read (listened to bc I’m a fan of audiobooks) was Howl’s Moving Castle, and I’m technically 2 chapters into the audiobook of The Foxhole Court (but it was started during a road trip and wasn’t engaging enough to keep me awake so was stopped). Maybe I’ll get back to it... 

Currently watching? - Well, I just finished binge watching Ted Lasso, and Alice in Borderland 2. Just finished a couple BLs (”Ghost Host, Ghost House” and “About Youth”) and just started another “Choco Milkshake” (I’m 2 episodes in) and will start “Cupid’s Last Wish” and “Triage” on Saturday.

I have to thank your anons. I’m listening to more TXT after their ask, and now I’m becoming obsessed with Enhypen after you talked about them. Enhypen esp feels underrated but they’re also hard to get into cos of their lore. I don’t know what’s really happening, I just know they’re extremely hot vampires who dance better than any group I’ve seen. I heard Niki is the dance prodigy to Taemin and Jimin and didn’t believe it until I watched the vids in your post, but based on what you said it didn’t sound like you like the group that much. Is there a reason you don’t stan them even when you said they make great music and are a good group?

Ask 2: Me again! I don’t know how well you know Enhypen, but can you also recommend your fav songs by them? Jay is your bias you said, can you say why? I’m just starting to get into them but they don’t have official positions so I’m not sure what to look for.

Lol Anon, we’re supposed to be doing quick asks. But okay. I’m a bit amused that with everything that’s happened in the last week, your question is about Enhypen. But also, frankly, that’s a mood.

I don’t stan Enhypen only because I’m a hiphop head, I think. They’ve got great songs, they’re the most cohesive dance unit in 4th gen, their choreographies are reminiscent of what makes BTS’s standout both in terms of difficulty and storytelling, so it’s no surprise that it requires dancers of a similar calibre as Jimin and Taemin because Ni-ki is really that good. Their group dynamic also reminds me a lot of BTS - Jaywon in particular remind me a lot of jikook in all the best ways. The group has very real synergy which is surprising for a few reasons.

But my bias in BTS is the rapline for a reason, lol. And Enhypen, as incredible as I find them, don’t have a very strong rap basis and don’t really put out songs with rap verses. They excel in the genres they do, but none of them are rappers, and I think that instantly limits my interest in them. A few of my friends are Engenes though and I can admit their performance cred, the energy they put into their concerts, is best in class.

You can't say one is homophobic because someone didn't agreed with your shipping and saying this person is queer when he shows the opposite of it. Personally I think jimin is queer because he has given enough clues for that. But JK? Other than some random song recommendations there's nothing queer about him.

1. I've never cared what anyone else says or thinks, my opinions are my own and mine alone. You won't change them by trying to say "see other people say this!" Bad debate tactic, try again and we could maybe talk about it

2. If you think the only queer think JK has done is some song recs, my friend, you've paid zero attention to the man AND you are probably straight yourself so the conversation doesn't really involve you....
