The majority shareholder hiding behind Oh Se Hyeon is you, Do Jun? Is that what you're saying? Using Chang Je to humiliate me and taking the New Seoul Town project... That was you, Do Jun?
You used my reluctance to give up on cars and used Ahjin Motors as bait to take Soonyang Motors' shares. You forced me to buy Hando Steel at an exorbitant price to drain our funds. You did all that with Oh Se Hyeon as a pawn, to toy with me to do this and that? The punk who dared to challenge me... was Jin Yang Cheol's youngest grandson. Jin Do Jun.
Was it really you?

9 Alternate endings for Reborn Rich
I just finished the last two episodes of Reborn Rich and oh boy.
This post is going to contain spoilers for this show, so skip this if you don't want to know what happened.
So if you are not familiar with Reborn Rich I will start with a summary.
Reborn Rich is a Korean show that centers around this guy:
Tumblr media
Yoon Hyun Woo is a man who worked his way up from poverty to become a secretary for the Jin family, the owners of the lucrative Soonyang Group. Hyun Woo worked with a philosophy of never questioning his orders or thinking for himself. This way of working allowed Hyun Woo to make his way up the cooperate ladder and he dedicated his life and loyalty to the Jin family. This philosophy also became his downfall.
The Jin family set Hyun Woo up to take the fall for embezzlement and ultimately led to Hyun Woo being murdered after he was sent on a job by the Vice Chairman of the Soonyang Group.
Tumblr media
(Right before Hyun Woo is shot in the head and falls off a cliff.)
Hyun Woo dies and then he wakes up in the body of a child who happens to be the youngest grandson of the Jin family, Jin Do Jun.
Tumblr media
(Young Do Jun. This young actor did an excellent job in the two episodes he was in)
He finds himself thirty years in the past as a different person but with all of the memories of his past life. Do Jun then sets out to find out who was responsible for his murder and to destroy the chance for any of the Jin heirs to take control of the company and the wealth that goes along with it.
So, my first sentence was a lie. This show actually centers around Jin Do Jun who was once but is no longer Yoon Hyun Woo.
Tumblr media
(Jin Do Jun who looks exactly like Yoon Hyun Woo to the audience, but not to any of the characters in the show apparently)
However, all of Do Jun’s actions are influenced by his previous life. But the show spends so much time in the past that finding out who was responsible for his murder no longer seems so important.
Now for the real reason for this post. Episode 16.
This post is going to get long and spoiler-y so I will continue under the cut...
So episode 15 ends with our male lead Jin Do Jun in a fatal accident. (this accident happens in 2002) At the beginning of episode 16, we are in a hospital in what I believe is Turkey but we are not with Jin Do Jun.
The show jumped back to 2022 and to Yoon Hyun Woo, who apparently did not die when he was shot in the head and fell off a cliff. He was somehow saved by Seo Min Young (the love interest of Jin Do Jun and the prosecutor fighting against the Jin family) who wants to use him to finally take down the Jin family.
We find out with Hyun Woo what happened in the past (kind of). The takedown of the Jin family happens with the testimony of Hyun Woo but not for their attempted murder of Hyun Woo. No, he was an accomplice to Jin Do Jun's murder and recorded a conversation that implicated the oldest son.
Ultimately, an unsatisfying ending that made the last 14 episodes pointless.
I am calling the next part of this post:
(9) Alternate endings for Reborn Rich that would have been significantly less dumb and not ruined the last 14 episodes
1.Grandpa didn’t die a year before Do Jun’s supposed death. Grandpa’s assistant spirits Do Jun away after the accident to where Grandpa is hiding. They pretend Do Jun is dead and the three of them continue to work to put Soonyang in Do Jun’s hands.
2. Do Jun doesn’t die in the accident but those who are on his side pretend he is dead. His recovery and plans take 20 years and everyone is surprised to see him return.
3. Do Jun’s spirit enters into Yoon Hyun Woo when he dies from the accident and that is why he was reborn as a Jin. The two of them are tied together and will continue with this cycle until the Jin family is taken down.
4. Do Jun doesn’t die but still loses everything he worked for and ends up being the one responsible for Yoon Hyun Woo’s death because he needs him to start again as Do Jun (they are in some sort of time loop, similar to the last scenario).
5. Do Jun dies in the car accident but Hyun Woo and Do Jun are actually physically identical. The Jin family is shocked when they see Hyun Woo show up to take them down. The return of their late nephew/cousin unnerves them and they make even more mistakes than they already did. (I know that Hyun Woo worked for the Jin family for a long time and someone would have noticed a while ago that he looks like the youngest grandson, but with the way this show was written, this totally would have worked)
6. The accident is less serious but still happens and the people responsible kidnap Do Jun until the management rights are officially assigned. They make sure that Do Jun will be unable to get those rights in the future. But Do Jun planned for something like this and with the help of Seo Min Young and Oh Se Hyun, they take down the Jin family.
7. Do Jun goes to the hospital after the accident but when he recovers the hospital staff drugs him so he is unable to leave. The Jin family member responsible for the accident keeps Do Jun in this state and tells the world that he died in the accident. He eventually escapes and takes down the family.
8. Do Jun is rescued after the accident but is seriously injured. Seo Min Young and Oh Se Hyun take care of him and continue the takedown of the Soonyang Group.
9. Yoon Hyun Woo was working for Do Jun all along and he went under deep cover and risked his life to take down the Jin family.
All of these are absolutely ridiculous but I had fun coming up with them. Are they really any more ridiculous than the ending we got?
If you watched the show, please add your own alternate ending in the comments.

You know, it's so funny that Song Joong Ki is getting so much hate for getting married, having a kid, and not wanting to tell his son's name to the media.
Like people are hating on him only for like, living a happy and stable life
And then there's him living his best life and not giving a shit.

I suggest you give up. If Jin Seung Jun is the one you're going up against, you won't get your revenge. After all, revenge isn't for those who have been wronged.
Only those with power can take revenge.

Thoughts on 'Reborn Rich' ep 15
Tumblr media
One of the first things I noticed at the chairman's first death anniversary was Hwa Young and Change Je sitting with Yoon Ki's family at one table, while the Young Ki's and Dong Ki's families had separate tables for themselves. Since the chairman's death, Hwa Young truly has become a mere garnish for her brothers.
"Boast about it only after you become the chairman, OK?" Hyeon Min to Seong Jun: Stop counting your chickens before they hatch, goddamnit.
His uncle needing Do Jun to spell out everything about Soonyang card the shares was hilarious. Dude! He's been doing this for years, playing you off against each other. If you weren't so blinded by your greed and ambition to be Soonyang's chairman you would have seen this coming a mile away!
Tumblr media
That was a rather painful but much needed conversation between father and son. Seong Jun has a point about how the world has changed, that there are now things such as profit and shareholders' rights under consideration. Dong Ki gets a similar lesson from Mason later in the ep. But the more important part of this conversation is Seong Jun telling his father what he really thinks of him — he a loser.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite things about this show, even though we don't get much of it, is Do Jun's relationship with his celebrity mom. I thought he would have moved out by now so it was nice to see him home and her waiting up for him. Laughed-cried at her comment about not knowing whether she was raising a son or a boarder. Kinda teared up when she talked about wanting her son to find someone he can talk and open up to. Do Jun says he does, and Song Joong Ki really sells the smitten look so I'll forgive the rather perfunctory development of this romance.
Speaking of romance, Min Young has Do Jun served with an arrest warrant for alleged illegal handover of political funds. Not a subpoena for an interview, an ARREST warrant because she didn't want him destroying evidence or fleeing the country hahaha. I'm not gonna break down how Do Jun bested his uncles and cousin again but the whole thing pretty much depended on Min Young being VERY good at her job and her knowing what kind of person Do Jun is. She later tells Do Jun she's still not sure whether he was set up or did the setting up (girl, you know the answer, c'mon!).
Tumblr media
One of my fave scenes from this ep: Mason describing the concept of "the Korea discount." Per a Sept. 20, 2022, Reuters story, the discount refers to a "tendency for South Korean companies to have lower valuations than global peers due to factors such as low dividend payouts, the dominance of opaque conglomerates known as chaebols and geopolitical risks involving North Korea." Mason lays out just how ridiculous the idea of handing down the business to one's children is. "It's like selecting a national team athlete based on the sole fact of whether their parents were medalists regardless of how competitive they are in the international market." Dong Ki, with his attempts at flattery and intimidation, is completely put in his place.
Looks like Dong Ki is not getting the "3 and 5" deal (sentenced for 3 years with 5 years suspended sentence on good behavior) so his wife hustles over to Jeongsimjae to ask Young Ki, the dude who went to prison for his dad and still suffers leg problems because of it, for help saving his ass. Of course the answer was no, considering all the scheming Dong Ki has done all these years that undermined older bro. Young Ki's wife couldn't wait to get her dig in. Unfortunately, it bites her and her family in the ass later as the investigation expands into Soonyang Corporation.
Did the Prosecutor's Office really detain Do Jun in that tiny room for 48 hours??? And how impressive and fast are Min Young's investigators?? Anyway, we get a "Leverage"-style montage of how Do Jun set up his uncles and the competence porn is truly topnotch. Plus Bible and art lessons from Change Je and Hyeon Min, respectively. The end result is Young Ki throwing his one asset under the bus and his son returning the favor in the next available moment.
Tumblr media
With the uncles AND cousin seemingly out of contention for chairmanship of the group, Do Jun burnishes his image by donating his $700 million "inheritance" from Chairman Jin (is that from the Micro Project slush fund?) and quickly turns public opinion around. Not surprisingly he gets voted the next chairman of Soonyang Group.
Tumblr media
What does he do next? Goes to that infernal museum he and his grandfather were supposed to visit on the day Chairman Jin was to announce him as the CEO of the holding company and his heir apparent. This time he does get a chance to enter building and look around. In front of a bigger-than-life portrait of his bigger-than-life grandfather, he wonders if he finally got his revenge or if he can finally call himself his grandson now, the series-long struggle of his character boiled down. He has no answer yet, right now he just misses the cantankerous old man.
Tumblr media
What follows is next is both a surprise and not — another car accident, supposedly because some things are just fixed. The shocker comes from who is at the scene of the crime. Do Jun, as he's looking at Hyun Woo, thinks the person who killed me is no other than myself. Dun dun dun!
Questions galore: Is Hyun Woo there by coincidence or part of the plan to murder Do Jun? If he's part of the conspiracy, did whoever hire him notice he's the mirror image of Jin Do Jun? I can't imagine this being a closed (time travel) loop. That Hyun Woo will now end up serving the family. Wouldn't he remember the murder he was a part of? He didn't even know Do Jun died. How would all this match up with what we saw happened in the first episode? I really hope the writers have a satisfying answer. Maybe it'll be more like The King Eternal Monarch, that with big enough changes, Do Jun can change his fate.

Vincenzo vs Dojun
V: If I did kill, would you cut ties with me? C: It's not so much that, but I'd feel as though you come from a distant world…like a character trapped in an oil painting or a faded newspaper. If this is how other people saw me, I'd probably feel a little sad. V: Maybe I'd rather live a life like a specimen behind glass.
This scene reminded me of the scene from Reborn Rich (episode 15) where Dojun mutters to himself after Mason and Rachel bailed on his celebratory champagne, "Being alone is better after all."
As much as both Vincenzo and Dojun are revenge fantasy protagonists, they're both tragic people, and much of it due to their own making. Neither of them ever really opened their hearts up to anyone. Both of them convinced themselves that they could not display any hint of vulnerability, lest their enemies use that against them, and that included expressions of love. Vincenzo would always live in regret that he never called his mother "mum", and Dojun never managed to sustain a relationship with Minyeong.
I feel like even until the end, we never really saw Vincenzo or Dojun with their masks down. The characters in that world have no idea what the real Dojun is like, or who the real Vincenzo is - and neither do the audience. This isn't a criticism, by the way, just an observation which I think adds to the tragedy of who they are.
Vincenzo, as the show's metaphor says, is like an otherworldly deity, an inhumanly being who came and swept out the scum then left. The monk called him "Damuncheon" (or Vaiśravaṇa according to wiki), a major Buddhist deity whose East Asian folklore does just that - descending upon Earth to purge it of evildoers. And like any non-human figurehead, he has no flaws, no vulnerabilities, and no desire or avenue to show his real personality. Even in raging grief (or grievous rage?), he is poised and cold and unrevealing, because he thinks he can't afford to be anything else. As he says to Chayoung for another incident - the colder your heart is, the higher your success for vengeance.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Dojun is like a doll, wide-eyed and arched brows and impeccable smiles, decking himself in disarmingly soft cardigans while he plays the family's greed and insecurities against each other. He had just a tad more humanness in him than Vincenzo, mostly around Yangchul's last days, but everywhere else that doll mask stayed firmly on, even before the tender concern of his mother or the promise of support from his father. He never tells them he loves them (even if he cares enough to up his revenge when they're hurt), just as he never tells them how much he's anxious and uncertain, because he thinks he can't afford to. The mask he uses might be different to Vincenzo's but the heart he hides is also self-imposed icy cold.
Tumblr media
Ultimately it comes from the script. Vincenzo's script is intentionally comic-like, and all the characters are a somewhat loose collection of characteristics rather than a convincing real person, and Vincenzo is the least real of them all. Reborn Rich rarely gave Dojun the chance to be emotive (which might be why a lot of people found Hyunwoo more interesting), and it never allowed him to discuss his motives and beliefs. In a script where practically every other character was more human and had more believable inner worlds than Dojun, kudos to SJK for propping up his role with sheer charisma and well-placed microexpressions.

Mason calls Do Jun "young expat" even after they come back to SK, after living alongside with him for years. A term of endearment, if you will. I just realized how Hyun-woo is the one living as Do Jun temporarily in that universe. Hyun-woo really was an young expat T_T
