The Untamed costumes extra:
Waist ornaments
We all know the beautiful, tasseled ornaments the Twin Jades wear hanging from their belts:
Tumblr media
So, I thought an extra costume post looking at these and other waist ornaments seen in the Untamed might be called for.
Various kinds of waist ornaments, yaopei, have tradionally been worn with hanfu. The long tasseled jade waist pendants often seen in historical c-drama (and in the Untamed), are the type of yaopei called jinbu that were originally worn to hold down the hanfu skirts; @ziseviolet who runs an amazing blog on hanfu has this excellent post that provides more information.
So, in addition to the esteemed Lan brothers, who else wears a jinbu in the Untamed? Let's start with... him.
Tumblr media
Jin Guangshan is wearing what to me looks like the most traditional style of jinbu among those seen in the Untamed. It comprises a carved nefrite jade (hetian jade?) piece that looks like it might be a variation of double dragon head huang (the lower picture is a piece from Han Dynasty era, shamelessly stolen from the net). From the jade are hanging three pendants of various yellow gemstones, perhaps yellow topaz and amber?, each adorned with a golden yellow tassel.
And we have more Jins wearing jinbu. No, not Jin Zixuan, who actually dresses rather modestly to be called a Peacock, but his half-brother.
Tumblr media
Chief Cultivator Jin Guangyao wears not one but two identical waist ornaments hanging from his jade-decorated belt. The pieces comprise tassels of the same yellow as Jin Guangshan's, and beads of silver and various gemstones in red (ruby or garnet?), yellow (topaz?) and dark gray (that's a tough one... translucent black jade?), but I have not managed to find a good close-up shot of them. Do you know how many in-focus below-the-waist close-ups the are in the Untamed? Not bloody nearly many enough! Also, a little side note here! I have been watching the Monarch Industry / Rebel Princess, and just noticed that Emperor Ma Zitan wears rather similar double waist ornaments with one of his outfits. So this is probably a specific style of jinbu?
And we have Jin Ling, who wears the Jiang Clarity Bell hanging from his waist (the only one seen to wear it thus in the Untamed).
Tumblr media
Jin Ling's waist ornament is quite interesting, because in addition to the small silver bells (two instead of one) it has two carved Bodhi Root beads (one depicting a lotus bud), a carved lotus pendant in what looks like white nephrite jade, and pale yellow double tassels with silver caps; identical to the ornament Jiang Yanli drops onto a stone, breaking the jade pendant, while waiting for news from Lotus Pier after the Wen attack.
Tumblr media
So, do all Jiang Clarity Bells have the same construction? Are they all identical? It doesn't seem to be the case: at least the one Jiang Yanli gives to Wei Wuxian in Yiling before her wedding is different, with a different kind of large lotus bead:
Tumblr media
So it seems that the waist ornament Jin Ling wears is the one that belonged to his mother, with the broken jade pendant repaired or, perhaps more likely, carved anew at some point before Jiang Yanli's death. If that is the case, Jin Ling has something from both of his parents: his father's sword and his mother's clarity bell. I do not remember if that was mentioned to be the case in the novel?
Talking about Jiang Yanli, she is the only woman in the Untamed seen wearing a jinbu. This takes place during the Phoenix Mountain hunt and when she stays at Jinlintai afterwards, and both her outfit and the jinbu are clearly Jin in style.
Tumblr media
The jinbu comprises various silver beads together with a red, a yellow and a dark grey gemstone bead (similar combination as later worn by Jin Guangyao) and what seems to be a flower of some kind (not a peony, though), also in silver. And the Jin-yellow tassel.
Let's get back to the jinbu that the esteemed Lan brothers wear, which are quite distinctive. In addition to the two jade rings, they have some additional beads in silver and gemstones, and a long tassel.
Tumblr media
The jade rings in Lan Wangji's jinbu are, I think, the finest white mutton fat hetian nephrite. Zooming in on the left image, it seems that the rings are not smooth, but might actually have carvings on them. If that is the case I'm guessing it could be a cloud motif of some kind, perhaps something similar as on the jade rings in the bottom image (again, found in the net). The additional gemstones seem to be either blue or colourless, perhaps topaz and aquamarine. The tassel is grey, similar to the tassel on Bichen.
Tumblr media
Lan Xichen's jinbu has jade rings of what seems like translucent moss-in-snow type of jadeite, similar to the bangle in the bottom right image. Similar to Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen has additional silver as well as blue and clear gemstone beads in his jinbu, including a rather large blue stone above his tassel. It also seems there is a reddish bead, close to the top (seen in the uppermost image). Lan Xichen's tassel is very dark blue, nearly black, a similar shade as also found in Shuoyue's and Liebing's tassels.
In addition to the Twin Jades, Lan Qiren also wears a jinbu, but his is somewhat different from those worn by his nephews: instead of the distinctive two jade rings, Lan Qiren's jinbu has a large, flat medallion of white, carved nephrite jade and a decorative chinese knot. Unfortunately, I was not able to find any clear close-up shots of either one, so I'm not able to say anything more precise about them... If I come across any later, I'll update this.
Tumblr media
The additional beads in the Grandmaster's jinbu are quite small, and seem to be rather dark (blue?) in colour, but it is quite impossible to see what stone they might be made of (lapis lazuli might be one option). The tassel of his jinbu is also grey, or perhaps bluish grey.
To end this, I should perhaps point out that even if I've made the assumption that the additional beads would be gemstones, I've understood glass beads were also traditionally used, so coloured glass might also be a feasible option, also in-universe.
But what would I give for a few clear closeups!

had to go back and rewatch the first half of ep 3 for fic research purposes and i have been stuck on Ryang Eum's outfit for the past three hours. what the f*ck is the name of that thing hooked to his belt bc i have tried everything i can think of to search on Naver and i am getting nothing
update: friend of a mutual did some digging and it is in fact most likely to be a yaopai/yopae/norigae-esque thing. my suffering was not for naught

I’m not sure if you’ve covered it or not, but what style dress does Yue wear when she becomes the Moon Spirit? I love the style and think it looks so pretty
Yue’s dress is mostly fantastical, with some Chinese touches.
Tumblr media
The thin scarf wrapped around her arms is called a pibo (披帛). The little floaty fabric with the jade pendant hanging from it looks like a detached weichang (围裳) with a jinbu (禁步). Weichang are overskirts meant to be layered over dresses and jinbu are dangling decorations meant to hang over skirts to prevent them from flying up. Since Yue’s a spirit, her weichang seems to just levitate around her gown ethereally. These accessories are often featured in depictions of the Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e (嫦娥). Other aspects of Yue’s design are also inspired by Chang’e.
Other than that, the dress is more just vaguely anime-inspired. The detached sleeves are especially common in anime.
If you want something with a similar ethereal feel to Yue’s outfit, but with more basis in a real-world culture, you could look into white-colored hanfu. 8)

What if, in a soulmate au, fdb has an entire painting of a lake on his back. It has a river leading away from it and a few waterfalls feeding into it. Lotus plants line the shores, the flowers in full bloom, and that's why he believes that llh is his soulmate when he first finds him.
And yet, some day or night after llh disappears - maybe it's too hot to sleep in proper clothes, maybe they fell into a lake together, maybe they're changing robes after a particularly intense spar - that fdb and dfs learn that they too are soulmates. Maybe dfs had known - fdb wears the jinbu on his belt all the time, its twin inked onto dfs' left hip. Maybe fdb had known - dfs trains near waterfalls, just like the ones painted in between his shoulder blades.
(Maybe they had both known, and had thought, foolishly, that, to each other, llh had been more important. Now, with him gone, maybe they finally talk about the single lotus laid on dfs' right hip, about the swathes of lotus plants all over fdb's back)
(Maybe as they lie in bed dfs traces the river on fdb's back and he tells him his story of lxy and llh)

Interesting how the common acronym for Taiwans DPP is the English acronym for their name instead of like MJD (民族进步党 - Minzu Jinbu Dang)

His Fairy
TW: READER IS BLACK, Reader got a shaved head, mentions of things pertaining to Han culture, Fluff, AAVE, Not a western fairy homies. MINORS DO NOT INTERACT! Soft Boi Sanemi! Cuddling! I formally am acknowledging that even though I did consult members of the ethnic group this relates to, not all members of that group will agree with foreigners wearing Hanfu. If that is the case this is not for you. Please, don't start a flame war about it.
Tumblr media
A lithe, slightly muscular black woman walks down the stage. Black hair shorn; her skin is a dark sienna with dark chocolate brown eyes. She is dressed in a beautiful white to pink fading into a red ombre Tang Dynasty Hanfu. Her Ruis crossed over and is a delicate lotus white that gradually bleeds into pink Jianse Qun with the pleated turning into a vibrant scarlet at the bottom. A Jade lotus Jinbu hangs from her waist held on by a bright ocher rope.  The Peizi was exaggeratedly long and wrapped around her arms and back in an elegant fashion. Given her the appearance of a celestial handmaiden. She wears modified Gong Xie embroidered with a pearlescent lotus and dragon motif, the same as ran through the rest of her outfit.
Her lips are flawlessly sanguine, eyeshadow matching with white-winged liner on top and pearls for her bottom liner. Blush has been applied to her cheeks giving her a vibrant and healthful look. No earrings adorn her small, dainty ears.
She walks with purpose. Her face giving haughty and mysterious. As she crosses the runway, she ignores the cameras. Focused on a fixed point in front of her.  Sitting center in the press row at the end of the aisle, directly in front of her is a young man with stark white, unruly hair. Violet eyes, scarred face, and frame. He wears an open V-neck satin button-up, displaying his chest for all to see. Tight black leather pants and matching black combat steel toes.  His hands have black, leather half gloves on them. Hiding some of his richly, and deeply tanned skin.
He is heavily built with a body that looked like Apollo and Adonis would have been his forefathers. Right now, his eyes were solidified on the dark-skinned woman in front of him. To him, she is an ethereal beauty. Her movements are so subtle that he believes she is floating. Every bit of the heavenly beauty she has been tasked to portray. None of the earlier lack of confidence showing.
“I am not sure I should take this job up.” she laments as she reviews the email brief her agent sent her. He leans over her shoulder and reads the instructions. “Why not? You are built for it. Heavy in the bust but that is a bonus feature, right?” he gently ribs her. “Not my culture. I don’t wanna be that person, ya know?” She leans back in her chair and starts to worry her bottom lip.
The man flicks her forehead to stop her. “If that was going to be an issue then they wouldn’t have sent you the job offer. The designer is Han Chinese. I am pretty sure they know if it is appropriation or not to request you for the job. Which you are still the perfect choice for anyways. Your dark skin sets you apart from the other models. Colors pop more and the MUAs can do more dramatic looks with your makeup.” he reassures her verbally going over the selected outfits for her to wear.
“And my lack of hurr?” she questions him.  He growls at her. “If that was a problem the offer would not be extended to you. Furthermore, if they have an issue, they’ll require you to wear a wig or some other hairpiece. Stop overthinking things.” he chastises her, flicking her forehead once more then backing off. “If you feel so out of place, I’ll get a ticket and sit front and center so all you have to do is focus on me.” He tells her, placing his hands on her shoulders and rubbing them lightly.  She smiles and hits the accept button. Placing a hand over one of his in thanks.
This is why she sees and hears nothing as she walks with bold, confident strides down the runway. Him smirking as he beckons her to him with his eyes. Once at the end of the walkways she poses sideways. Breaking eye contact with him to look at the far wall to her right in an aloof manner, leaning her weight back to enhance the air of mystery about her. Casting a sideways glance back at him she dips her head forward coyly then turns on the balls of her feet to go back up the runway to finish her walk. Sashaying her hips carefully to give the outfit the appearance of wind blowing her qun about. Once she hit the top of the stage again, she turns around fully and strikes another pose before walking off the stage.
Breathing heavily, she inhales sharply and gets ready for her next reentry with the designer. Upon her head is added a modern golden huasheng. The chain is gold with the brow plate mother of pearl and smaller, deep red carnelians hang from tiny golden links down her forehead giving bright beautiful pops of color and a very dramatic look.
Standing next to the designer she strides out next to the shorter woman, head held high and proud. She bows with the rest of the models in thanks to the audience and clasps her hands with the designer when they turn to thank her. Her smile is bright and radiant.  The man watching her smiles. then takes a picture with his smartphone and leaves his seat. Exiting the room to head backstage.
He waits for her with casual elegance, leaning against the wall to the female dressing rooms. When the woman he seeks exits wearing a casual black and white romper, along with matching black Air Force Ones he swoops in and picks her up bridal style. Twirling her and kissing her lips before congratulating her. She smiles, embarrassed by her actions in front of her coworkers.
“Set me down!” she demands between shy laughs. “Not a chance beautiful. I finally caught a fairy.  I intend to keep her and make her mine for all of eternity.” he speaks in a smooth, tenor. “You are a dumbass,” she comments and playfully smacks the side of his face. He turns his head to go along with her ruse.  Coming back to kiss her hand when she tries again.
Behind them, the designer smiles and hides her face behind both of her hands much like the other models. The scene in front of them too cute to interrupt. A few take pictures of the cuteness and send them off to their friends commenting on the adorable couple. The designer walks over to her photographer and points to the pair and motions for their picture to be taken. The man nods understanding and takes several quick shots, showing them to the shorter woman who smiles, nods and they both give each other a sneaky thumbs up as they watch the couple leave the premises.
Several weeks have passed and a package arrives at the couple's doorstep. The man brings it in confused. “Hey! Did you order something!?” he asks confused. She bounds around the corner and comes to a skidding halt. “Nope. Is it for me?” she asks nosily. He nods and carries the package to their kitchen setting it on the center circular table, using a box cutter to cut the tape before standing aside and sliding it over to her.
Opening it up she is confused to see the ornaments she wore during the fashion show. She stares at them, a boggled expression on her face as she looks them over in her hands.  The man beside her reaches into the box and pulls out a paper and twine old-fashioned wrapped soft item. Undoing the string he unfolds and lifts to reveal each item that was in the soft paper. The woman gasps as she realizes it is the last outfit she wore on the runway.  Setting the accessories down she touches the fabrics gently and with reverence.
“For my most beautiful fairy. May we meet again? I hope this ensemble is to your liking and will endear you to me for future endeavors.” The man reads a handwritten note on floral pressed parchment. Another smirk as he looks at her. He digs back into the box and pulls out 3 frames. The first is of her, proudly walking the runway. The second the two of them together mid-twirl. Both look happy and deeply in love. The third and largest frame was a picture from behind her with him as the focus. His eyes intently focused on her, a sense of claiming coming from his body.
“Damn, you look like a god here.” A dark finger points to him in the final frame. “You’ll never know.” he teases her, leaning over to kiss the top of her head and he lines the pictures up side by side and smiles at them, pulling her into his embrace. “Think you’ll work with her again?” he questions, rubbing his face on her short peach fuzz hair.
“I think so. The fairy is very pleased.” she chuckles, leaning back into him, looking up to him. He meets her eyes and he kisses her lids. “Mm, looks like I need to be prepared to catch you again after every show. I can’t bear to let you escape,” he says as he pulls back gazing lovingly into her eyes. She smirks again, closing hers, enjoying his warmth. “Then I’ll have to flee more often just to feel the thrill of being reunited with you.” He squeezes her and the pair forget about the world around them and lose themselves in each other.
