Butterflies and Communication

JN22 and JN135

In these episodes there is a problem with a lack of communication between Ash and Goh. And that lack of communication leads to Goh nearly ending his friendships with Raboot and Ash, before he starts to understand that he can trust Ash to listen and help him. So, the butterfly Pokemon evolving and beginning a migration symbolizes a change in Ash and Goh’s relationship. One where they become closer and begin communicating better.

In JN22, Goh was having trouble with Raboot and wasn’t telling Ash about the problems he was dealing with, instead he tries to handle it on his own and then decides that Raboot is better off without him.

And in JN135, Goh was having trouble telling Ash that he wanted to leave on his own journey, and then got upset that Ash had already decided on leaving without talking to him first, running off without actually communicating how he feels.

While they watch the Beautifly, there’s a true moment of understanding between Ash and Goh, where they are connected and share the same feelings. It’s after this that Goh actually starts communicating with Ash, and tells him about the problems he’s having with Raboot. He still has a lot to learn about communication at this point, but it is where he starts getting better at it. So this connection is what Goh needed to start trusting Ash and let him in.

In episode 135, this same type of shared experience is exactly what they needed to reconnect again. Ash wonders if the Butterfree will be okay in the rain and Goh tells him that they will be, and they are very clearly talking about their relationship here too. This is when Goh stops shutting Ash out, and Ash is ready to listen.

And they start communicating again, which serves as a bridge for Goh to later share all his worries during their second Lugia ride, and for Ash to reassure him again that they can share their concerns with each other because they’re friends.

Sidenotes:

In JN22 Goh imagines Ash as a Beautifly, and it’s a silly moment that further shows that the two of them are linked to the Pokemon.

And in JN136, Ash and Goh are shown to be further linked to Butterfree too. A picture of them is shown with flowers that represent them, and then in the next scene Ash reunites with his Butterfree that also matches the flowers.

When the JN135 episode title was released, you don't know how much I rolled around the bed squealing and screaming.

I always have this SatoGou Future AU where they have something they gave to each other on their anniversary - mostly those tag necklaces (I also entertained the thought of only Gou giving the necklace to Ash, while Ash gave Gou a ring).

In which:

》Ash's tag says: "My heart lies forever in your hands." (From Gou's line of "The future is in the palm of my hands.")

And

》 Gou's tag says: "I'm glad I met you. I'm really glad I chose you." (A line from the 1st ending song of the japanese version of Sun and Moon)

I know the chances of Satogou actually becoming canon in JN135-136 are pretty low but I’m gonna keep clinging to the hope I’ve got until either it miraculously does happen or the episodes air without any of that & the hope dissipates

JN135 preview. fuck. go is actually gonna become a chaser. theyre actually splitting them up. did the last 4 years mean NOTHING to you???? hhhhhgsghn god. damnit. i love you journeys but also good lord. keep these two guys together theyre besties pleaseee let them be multi-season companions.

Beginning with Ho-oh, ending with Lugia, huh?.

(Just some random thoughts below. Nothing important.)

Anyway about Ho-oh,

The final Japanese opening of original series, Ready Go, made a reference to Ho-oh in the lyrics, saying about 'going over seven colored rainbow'. The last DP opening also had Ash chasing Ho-oh.

About Journeys, huh? I can see everyone is disappointed since it 95% follows the game-based, e.g. Ash's fighting scene, Goh is essentially Pokemon Go (no pun intended), while Chloe is Lets Go game. After all, the anime has created their own canonity for years, i.e., anime contest being different than the game, using defensive moves for offensive.

For a new pokemon fan who started with Go or LG... well this one is probably not disappointing. (Note: probably)

I, myself, found 'the end message' is similar to Pokemon Evolutions. There, Oak says, “But you did well. Just look at your pokemon! The bond you share is marvelous, and you’ve found so many! With the data you’ve gathered, you’ve been helping my studies. And, besides you weren’t doing it all alone. You are a part of much larger community, Green. A world of dreams and adventures, challenges and discovery of trainers and pokemon.” Then he declares the pokedex is complete but turns out it isn’t. So Green, Trace, and Elaine set out again.

The similarity: Yeah, Ash and Goh set out to another journey on their own like how Ash says goodbye to his previous companions and they all go on their own path. The previous episode (JN135), Goh stated he wanted to leave to meet more pokemon and trainers to learn about the world more (thx subs). That means, in order to reach Mew, he intends to expand his worldview / perspective by knowing its community and world. On the other hand, Chloe started with zero interest with pokemon but slowly opens up as episodes go. I guess everyone misread her as someone who doesn’t find out anything. To be fair, her first focus episode shows her doubts in aspiration. Then the later episodes, she becomes to care and learns about it little by little, particularly about Eeevee. Yes, she hasn’t decided. She spent most of her screen time going to school and, on some occasion, joining Ash and Goh; while the two boys 100% set out to a pokemon world. So I don’t find it weird she hasn’t fully found what she wants. (Not saying school sucks.) I find her still progressing on it. At least, she doesn’t stay in her comfort zone / her slice of life daily routine, but slowly getting out of that zone. The process of doing so is usually slowly yet progressively, hence it’s time consuming. I don’t get why people assume she starts her journey as soon as she gets Eevee. Well, going on a journey might work but, given her disinterest at the beginning, it wouldn’t be easy for her. So the lesson and development from her story is to discover more. Plus, I never expected anything from Chloe except gaining development (in this case, she slowly tries to discover more by being research fellow in the boys’ stead). Since Journeys is about double protags Ash and Goh at the very beginning, I always thought Chloe as the side character that would get development (which is ok coz I’m tired of ‘girl being second/third person in the group’ trope that makes them eye-candy for the show, minus Iris and Alola girls).

In conclusion, the moral lesson to discover more is somehow fitting to be epilogue (as I pointed it works in Evolutions).
