I hate job hunting because every time I open a description for a job the first five paragraphs are always meaningless “Scrimblo Industries is committed to synthesizing a dynamic approach to diversity and learning from--” drivel, and then at the bottom they tell you they will pay you in grass clippings and you STILL don’t know what the job is about

Me: I'm color-coding it! [Explains system]
My sister: [chokes on a laugh]
Me: What?
My sister: Nothing, I was gonna say something but it's really mean.
Me: What is it? Like the suspected autism, or--?
My sister: No it's just, dude you're color-coding a cookbook. Get a job.

When a job interviewer asks if you have any questions for them at the end, maybe don’t just make stuff up to impress them. (I saw this advice going around recently. I honestly don’t know why you would do that. Kudos to the person giving the advice though if it’s worked for them.) In a job interview, you are also vetting a company to see if they’re the right fit for you. Ask them relevant questions that you want to know the answer to! Don’t miss out on that opportunity to learn about red or green flags that will help you decide. (And obviously if you’re dead set on the job regardless of any red flags, this will help you anticipate what sort of job this will be.) You might want to ask things like... - Do you do annual performance reviews? - When dealing with a challenging project/customer/client, what support does someone working here have access to? - What’s your favorite benefit or perk that comes from working here? - How would you describe the company culture? - How would you say the attitude surrounding work-life balance is here? - What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on/thing you’ve done here? - What’s the hardest challenge you’ve had to solve working here? Questions like these will give you a better insight into the day to day of what working at a specific place might be like! (Not all of these apply to every type of job, so YMMV. Make up your own questions.) Some companies won’t be forthcoming about certain questions for obvious reasons (particularly ones about work-life balance), but you still might be able to catch the difference between a confident answer and a bullshit one.

I like my job; I like my boss and the work that I do, which is socially meaningful. But I also would really like to make more money than it's realistically possible for someone of my skills and experience to make in nonprofits, so I've been considering transitioning to the for-profit world.
The problem is my job doesn't really exist in the for-profit world. So I've been going through my resume and reworking it to demonstrate general skills (administration, budgeting, cat-herding, etc) and trying to figure out what kind of job those could support.
I also googled around for some kind of way to like, input my skills and get a list of jobs I could do with those skills. I found one site that had you rate 20-30 common job skills on a scale from "no knowledge" to "expert" and rated all my skills, then breathlessly hit the submit button to get the job suggestions back...
Well, I guess they aren't wrong.

[ID: My match results showing the top three jobs for someone with my particular skillset; number one is "Poets, lyricists, and creative writers" while number two is "Music directors and composers" and number three is "Art, drama, and music teachers, postsecondary."]
What extremely lucrative and easy-to-attain careers. ($73k a year my ass.)
I do actually have a ton of white-collar office-worker skills, but clearly my dislike of hard work and my passion for bullshitting shone through...

I am by no means an expert on the subject at all, but if I could give one piece of advice to people who are job hunting, it is to always save a copy of the description of any job you apply for. It’s getting RIDICULOUS out there (at least in my experience/industry) in terms of how long between when a job gets posted and when they start contacting applicants for interviews, and unless you have a photographic memory, or the job is still active on the website you found it on, you will forget details about the job before you get invited to interview and it’s probably not a strong sign if you ask the interviewer what the heck the job is again (even if it’s fair given the elapsed time and how many applications people expect you to have going at once).
If it’s not already available in PDF format, just click the print option on your browser’s menu when you’re on the webpage with the job listing and when it gives you the window with the printer specifications, select “save as PDF” on the dropdown of available printers instead and save it to the same folder where you’re saving your cover letters/resumes/application materials with the name of the company/job title/date you applied in the file name. easy peasy. I still forget to do this occasionally but even remembering to do it half the time has saved me a lot of trouble overall.
job hunting sucks and is demoralizing on the best day, so keep your head up, do little things like this to make your life easier, and remember that I love you 💖 you got this!

My co-worker turned me on to this: if you're like me and you absolutely suck at resumes, go look up your official job description. Pretty much every place I've worked (call center, retail, food service, cemetery, desk job) I got a copy of this as part of the packet of junk they give out when you're hired. Most places will give you another copy if you ask for it.
And that thing is a gold mine of responsibilities and skills and duties, all laid out in corporate-speak.
Pick the ones that sound most impressive (that you can actually describe in a couple of sentences if asked to elaborate) and plop them onto your resume, and you'll be that much more appealing a candidate when you set out for a better job.
