i think there's horse sexism in the kentucky derby . field of twenty horses, right? plus a couple more runners-up that can swap in if somebody has to drop out . not a single filly in the lineup. which obviously doesn't mean i think that like ... the HORSES are sexist . but i imagine that in a field where most of the top trainers are men themselves, there's more of a focus on training the colts that come across their paths, and perhaps even more colts being selected to be trained towards these big races in the first place . a horse is a horse is a horse, they all go fast, but there's probably an unconscious bias from breeders, trainers, owners, etc that prevents the field from being more diversified

Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! now available for Switch
From Gematsu
Tumblr media
Game Freak has released Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! for Switch via Nintendo eShop, the developer announced.
Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! first launched for Apple Arcade on January 20, 2023.
Here is an overview of the game, via Game Freak:
About
Guide your steed to the finish line by playing solitaire! Saddle up for this unique solitaire and horse-racing hybrid from Game Freak, creators of the Pokemon franchise! Pocket Card Jockey originally released to great acclaim on the Nintendo 3DS, and while the basic rules are the same, the racing segments have been reborn in glorious 3D!
Key Features
Solitaire as Simple as Can Be – Focus your mind and clear cards with subsequent numbers in quick succession. The more cards you clear, the better your horse’s mood will be—which helps them charge energy during races!
Mind Your Positioning While Racing – Your position on the track determines the difficulty of your solitaire rounds. There are also special cards that can be picked up if you run over them while racing. These cards provide a variety of benefits, including leveling up your horse, learning new skills, or improving your performance in a race. Be careful though, because running too much on the outside of the track will cause your horse to lose precious stamina!
Go For Broke in the Homestretch – If your steed has charged tons of energy and has plenty of stamina left in the tank, they’ll sprint their heart out once you enter the homestretch. Make sure not to run into other horses as you aim for first place!
Entrust Difficult Races to Future Generations – Take the beloved steeds you’ve grown on the racetrack and pair them up on the farm. The foal they produce will inherit their abilities and become your new partner on the racecourse! Breed generation after generation of racehorses in your quest to conquer all the biggest, most prestigious races in the world!

as a small addendum, I'd like to note that sexism is a major problem in horse racing and I don't really want to refute that. It's notable that no female jockey has ever won the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes, the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and only single digit numbers of women have ridden in the races period. Julie Krone was the first female jockey to ever ride in the Belmont Stakes (the final leg), back in 1993. She actually won, and she's a living legend because of it. But no woman has ever won the Derby or Preakness.
And only six women have ever ridden in the Derby: Diane Crump, Patti Cooksey, Andrea Seefeldt, Julie Krone, Rosemary Homeister and Rosie Napravnik. The number of women who've ridden in the Preakness is even lower: three. Patti Cooksey placed sixth in 1985. Andrea Seefeldt placed seventh in 1994, and Rosie Napravnik placed 3rd on Mylute in 2013 and 9th in 2014 on Bayern.
So Julie Krone stands alone as the only woman to ever win any of the three Triple Crown races. And that was 30 years ago.

Rode a horse for the first time today! I would show pictures but I'm weirdly committed to concealing my appearance from Tumblr lmao.
My horse's name was Socks, and he was a spirited little chestnut. It felt surprisingly natural to be on a horse! I wasn't expecting it to be so easy and to come to me so naturally. Me and the horse got into a little groove after a while, despite how picky he was being. My mom also got kicked off by her horse! She's totally fine tho. She's ridden horses before and knows exactly what to do if a horse starts to throw you off. I also found god in the colors of the flowers! So that's good!
Felt fine until a few hours later when my ass started to hurt (I got no meat on the cheeks) and let's just say, I Was Not On My Period Before I Rode The Horse.

Honestly if there was one sport where I was like physically and mentally built to perfectly fit it, I think it would be endurance riding. Such a shame that I’ve never gotten the opportunity to try it
