America in the '50s was a time of consumer optimism. The post-war economy was booming and in addition to brand-new tract houses and shiny state-of-the-art appliances the popularity of a more opulent burial style was also on the rise. Instead of being buried in the ground, American consumers were choosing to have their remains eternally enshrined in polished beds of marble at public mausoleums. “In life and death a new type of luxury could be afforded,” says Chicago-based photographer John Faier, whose series Queen Of Heaven trains a cinematic lens on these lavish resting places. “The average American could afford these things and could now play in a world where design and status were important.”

“I wake up with an idea that keeps me from going back to sleep. So I get up and bring this idea to life.” His assemblages, which he called “fixing ups,” were made from pieces of plywood and branches to which he attached found materials, such as logs, hickory nuts, plastic toys, fabric, hair, and photographs (usually of faces) cut from magazines.

The son of an emancipated slave, Steve Ashby was born in 1904 in the small town of Delaplane, Virginia. The second child in a family of twelve, he received very little formal education and he could neither read nor write. He lived his entire life there, in a rented former school-house with his wife and adoptive son. Ashby spent most of his life working as a farmer and gardener until he retired in 1950. Only after the death of his wife in 1960 he became fully committed to sculpting.

Queen Of Heaven by John Faier

The first time I stepped into one of these large, community mausoleums was on the west side of Chicago. The facility, Queen of Heaven, was built between 1956 and 1964. It is vast and has capacity of over 30,000 remains. The scent of embalming fluid pervades the air and it is a time capsule for all things mid-century. The place struck me as grand, beautiful, grotesque, and odd; the emptiness made me reflect on my own short, transient existence.

Ed Sheeran is now UK’s richest star under 30 after taking the top spot from Adele

    The 28-year-old singer who has had a successful year topped Heat magazine’s annual guide to the UK’s wealthiest stars aged 30 and under, having jumped from an estimated worth of £94 million in 2017 to £170 million. Sheeran, who was in second place last year, took the first spot from fellow music star Adele as she turned 31 in May. She is no longer eligible for the accolade According to Standard UK, the increase in Sheeran’s wealth is partly due to his world record-breaking, highest-grossing two-year Divide Tour, which saw him play more than 250 shows to more than seven million fans since March 2017.
