But the war disclosed no great generals, for the simple reason that, except for the opening phase of retreat from Mons and the advance back to the Aisne, the move round to cover the Channel Ports, and the final advance of all, there was little scope for generalship. Once trench warfare set in everyone was bound to the wheel; and when the High Command gave it a turn, Army, Corps and Divisional commanders turned with it. Both sides were locked in a stranglehold from which neither could break away; they shifted their grip occasionally, and now and then got in a good body blow, but the end could only come with the physical and moral exhaustion of one or the other.
General John Burnett-Stuart in his private memoir of the war.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Honoré de Balzac, Warren Cann (Ultravox), Cher, Kit Clarke (Danny Wilson), Joe Cocker, Susan Cowsill, Steve George (Mr. Mister), David Hedison, Nick Heyward, Guy Hoffman (BoDeans), Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Astrid Kirchherr, Shorty Long, Dolly Madison, Cindy McCain, John Stuart Mill, Timothy Olyphant, The Police’s 1983 single “Every Breath You Take,” Zbigniew Preisner, Busta Rhymes, James Stewart, Jane Weidlin, Anthony Zerbe, and my friend, the uber-talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Vee (no relation to Bobby Vee). He’s best known as a longsuffering champion of the West Coast punk scene and as front man for the legendary San Diego band Social Spit. Off that grid, we worked together in the mid-80s and I was astonished by his diverse and well-produced demo-ing of material ranging in style from rock gospel to agit-pop to folk to prog-rock. Here’s a song of mine we whipped together at a former spaghetti factory in San Francisco—a track inspired by The Alarm and T-Bone Burnett…and HB JV—thank you for your years of creative energy and your example of cutting through adversity.

Roy Rogers Debut | Smiley Burnette | Under Western Stars (1938) | Classic Westerns
Under Western Stars is a 1938 American Western film directed by Joseph Kane and starring Roy Rogers, Smiley Burnette, Carol Hughes, and the Maple City Four. Written by Dorrell McGowan, Stuart E. McGowan, and Betty Burbridge, the film is about a populist singing cowboy who decides to run for Congress in order to seek federal assistance to help small ranchers regain their water rights during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. His campaign comes into conflict with greedy water company executives The film was the first starring role for Rogers, made under contract to Republic Pictures during a walkout by the studio's singing cowboy Gene Autry. John Fairbanks' water company refuses to allow free water for the farmers and ranchers. When Roy Rogers and his men overpower the dam's guards and release the valve on the water, a sympathetic judge fines Roy one dollar and convinces him to follow in his father's footsteps and run for the United States House of Representatives. Roy wins the election and fights his best to have the Federal Government step in to solve the dire situation. Roy is encouraged and secretly helped by John Fairbanks feisty daughter, Eleanor. On December 22nd 1715 James Francis Stewart,  landed in Peterhead from France.
On his unexpected arrival, he was put up in a local house for the night. He was suffering dreadfully from seasickness, was weakened from a bout of the measles which had delayed his departure from France. He must have had a few curious onlookers and was described as;
“standing with his cocked hat pulled over his eyes in deep despondency before the fire.” in his lodgings.
The erstwhile Jacobite leader went on to spend a night in the now ruined Inverugie Castle, before making his way to Aberdeen. He passed the next night at Newburgh before carrying on to Aberdeen, accompanied only by a handful of horsemen, in ill health and in disguise.
Loyalties in Aberdeen were divided: from the early 18th century there were some overt signs of anti-Hanoverian feeling but the extent of Jacobite sympathies did not become apparent until the rebellions themselves. During both rebellions a rebel Jacobite Council was elected in Aberdeen. In 1715 the rebel Council tried to help the Jacobite cause as far as possible but the rebellion never really developed any momentum.
Aberdeen’s mercat cross dates from 1686 and at the cross new monarchs were proclaimed. On 20 September 1715 the James Frances Edward Stuart was declared King at both the Aberdeen and Old Aberdeen the mercat crosses.
Visit Aberdeen have a Jacobite trail and it tells us
“In 1715, the day after the Old Pretender was declared king at the mercat cross, elections were held for a new Council. Those loyal to the Hanoverians absented themselves whilst the Jacobite councillors met in the East Kirk of St Nicholas in order to elect a rebel Council: they elected Patrick Bannerman as Provost and John Leslie, John Burnett, William Simpson and John Fyfe as baillies. Writing his memoirs later, the brother of the Earl Marischal declared that this was done in order to shake off the ‘double yoak, and [to] free themselves from slavery and usurpation by the restoration of king James”  Read more on this and the ‘45 at the link below.
There had been a lack of strong leadership, communication and cohesion in the 1715 uprising. Despite receiving no commission from James to start the rising, the Earl of Mar held the first council of war in Braemar and on 6 September at Braemar Mar raised the standard of “James the 8th and 3rd”, accompanied by 600 supporters.
In northern Scotland, the Jacobites were successful, taking Inverness, Gordon Castle, Aberdeen and Dundee. They were unable to capture the military fortress at Fort William or Edinburgh Castle.
By October, Mar’s forces stood with nearly 20,000 men and had taken control of all Scotland above the Firth of Forth, apart from Stirling Castle. Mar was an indecisive leader and the capture of Perth and the move south by 2,000 men were probably decided by subordinates. It was a very important strategic point, being the first place the River Tay could be forded by bridge and a major artery of communication north, south, east and west of Scotland. Mar’s indecisiveness gave the government forces under the command of the Duke of Argyll time to increase their strength until they clashed.
On 22 October Mar eventually received his official commission from James appointing him commander of the Jacobite army. The Jacobite army outnumbered Argyll’s forces by three-to-one and Mar decided to march unsuccessfully on Stirling Castle. On 13 November at Sheriffmuir, the two forces came head to head in battle. The fighting was indecisive but nearing the end of the battle the Jacobites numbered 4,000 men, compared to Argyll’s 1,000. Mar’s army began to close in on Argyll’s forces, who were poorly protected, but Mar did not order them to advance, to offer the coup de grâce possibly believing that he had won the battle already (Argyll had suffered the bloody loss of 660 men on the field, three times as many as Mar). But Mar gave away his advantage and retreated to Perth. On the same day as the Battle of Sherrifmuir, Inverness surrendered to government forces, and a smaller Jacobite force led by Mackintosh of Borlum was defeated at Preston, England.
Lacking momentum and cohesion, the war was lost before James VIII (III) even landed. By the time he arrived at Perth in January 1716, the Jacobite army numbered fewer than 5,000 men. In contrast, the government forces had acquired heavy artillery and were advancing quickly. Mar decided to burn a number of villages between Perth and Stirling to deprive the government army of supplies in a policy of scorched earth. Auchterarder, Blackford, Crieff, Dunning, Muthill were all put to the torch, as well as farms and rural properties. It must have been terrifying for the local people. On 30 January Mar led the Jacobites out of Perth and on 4 February the Pretender wrote a farewell letter to Scotland, sailing from Montrose the following day.
Aged 27, James had only spent 43 days in Scotland as an adult. He made subsequent attempts to invade and take his throne, but never again set foot in Scotland.
After the uprising Jacobites prisoners were tried for treason and sentenced to death. The Indemnity Act of July 1717 pardoned all those who had taken part in the Rising, but the whole of Clan Gregor was specifically excluded from the benefits of that Act.
In later years, James, now known as the Old Pretender, made two more attempts at the British throne but was defeated each time.

hi Imogen. What books did you read as a child?
hello! Trying here to differentiate between books I read as a teenager, and the books I read as a child. I read... anything. Everything. The back of mustard jars at the breakfast table. I read every single book in my school library.
But some particular favourites are here.
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
The Seeing Stone by Kevin Crossley-Holland
Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit/Tales from the Perilous Realm, JRR Tolkien
Chronicles of Narnia, CS Lewis
Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Michelle Paver
Redwall by Brian Jacques
Ingo by Helen Dunmore
Charlotte’s Web, EB White
The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame
Journey to the River Sea and lots of others by Eva Ibbotson
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Box of Delights by John Masefield
The Cry of the Icemark etc by Stuart Hill
Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz
Dawn Undercover by Anna Dale
The Time Wreccas by Val Tyler
Watership Down by Richard Adams
North Child by Edith Pattou, which I later learnt is a retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon
Pretty much anything by Michael Morpurgo, Roald Dahl, Michael Bond.
I also liked the Horrible Histories books by Terry Deary and I had a book about English kings and queens by Tony Robinson, which I used to read obsessively. I wrote my own retellings of history, too. I was very into Joan of Arc!
By the time I was ten I was reading books from my parents’ bookshelves, so then I got into Beowulf and the Iliad and myths, the Lokasenna...

“Middleton had an unusual gift of being able to gallop over sofas and arm-chairs, landing on his hands with his hindquarters tucked under him like a wolf, an accomplishment he used to display with great success in the anteroom after dinner.
“At Cologne Station we were accosted by an unpleasant stationmaster dressed as a cross between an Admiral of the Fleet and a Sergeant-Major, who said we had far too much luggage in the carriage…
While we were arguing with him in bad German, we saw that Middleton was becoming restive; and suddenly he leapt from the train and started galloping up and down the platform, jumping heaps of luggage and snapping over his shoulder. This sally alarmed everyone, including ourselves. But we hastily explained that our brother officer was a bit queer because of sun-stroke, and that we were by way of looking after him.
This went down better than we could have hoped, and after we had coaxed Middleton back to his lair, we had the carriage to ourselves for the rest of the journey.”
Burnett-Stuart’s memoir has some really wonderful anecdotes in it like this. Apparently he was also quite good at what he called “rybald rhymes” although sadly, he didn’t include any in the memoir.

Craigievar Castle is a pinkish harled castle 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was the seat of Clan Sempill and the Forbes family resided here for 350 years until 1963, when the property was given to the National Trust for Scotland by William Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill. The setting is among scenic rolling foothills of the Grampian Mountains. The contrast of its massive lower story structure to the finely sculpted multiple turrets, gargoyles and high corbelling work create a classic fairytale appearance.
An excellent example of the original Scottish Baronial architecture, the great seven-story castle was completed in 1626 by the Aberdonian merchant William Forbes, ancestor of the Forbes baronets of Craigievar and brother of the Bishop of Aberdeen, Patrick Forbes of Corse Castle. Forbes purchased the partially completed structure from the impoverished Mortimer family in the year 1610. Forbes was nicknamed Danzig Willy, a reference to his shrewd international trading success with the Baltic states.
William's son became a Baronet of Nova Scotia by Charles I and this title is now extinct. The Forbes Baronetcy, of Craigievar in the County of Aberdeen, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 20 April 1630 for William Forbes. He was also a descendant of Hon. Patrick Forbes, third son of the second Lord Forbes, and the nephew of the first Baronet of the 1628 creation. The fourth Baronet represented Aberdeenshire in the House of Commons. The 5th Baronet married the Hon. Sarah Sempill, eldest daughter of Hugh Sempill, 12th Lord Sempill. Their grandson, the eighth Baronet, succeeded as seventeenth Lord Sempill in 1884 (see the Lord Sempill for earlier history of this title). The titles remained united until the death of his grandson, the 19th Lord and tenth Baronet, in 1965.
Designed in the L plan, as was Muchalls Castle, which is located in the same region, Craigievar is noted for its exceptionally crafted plasterwork ceilings. Craigevar, Muchalls Castle and Glamis Castle are generally considered to have the three finest ceilings in Scotland. The Clan Forbes family was close friends of the Clan Burnett of Leys, who built both Crathes Castle and Muchalls Castle. The ceilings feature plaster figures of the Nine Worthies and other family emblems.
By the early 19th-century, the tower had fallen into decay. Sir John Forbes had considered demolishing the tower and consulted the Aberdeen city architect John Smith who advised against that course of action, stating the tower was: "one of the finest specimens in the Country of the age and style in which it was built." Roof repairs were undertaken and involved the re-construction of almost the entire top floor. The windows, external harling and pointing were replaced, and it is likely Smith also designed the gardener's cottage.
The castle originally had more defensive elements including a walled courtyard with four round towers; only one of the round towers remains today. In the arched door to that round tower are preserved the carved initials of Sir Thomas Forbes, William Forbes' son. There is also a massive iron portcullis or gate covering the entrance door which is named a yett.
The castle interior boasts a Great Hall that has the Stuart Arms over the fireplace; a musician’s gallery; secret staircase connecting the high tower to the Great Hall; Queen's Bedroom; servants' quarters and of course several splendid plasterwork ceilings. There is a collection of Forbes family portraits inside as well as a considerable quantity of Forbes furnishings dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. The castle also houses two original Henry Raeburn portraits complete with original receipts.

Star Wars Day- A Memorial
Happy National Star Wars Day, everyone!
Last year, I commemorated this day by beginning a 14 week-long project, in which I reviewed all existing Star Wars movies.  Of course, since Episode 9- Rise of Skywalker won’t be out until December, it will be a while longer before I can review that one.
So this year, I decided to take a moment to look back and remember all the Star Wars cast and crew we have lost throughout the years.  Because without their time and talent, the timeless saga might never have become the phenomenon it has become.

5 Horror Directors Who Entered The Twilight Zone
Tumblr media
Leading up to today's premiere of Jordan Peele's reboot of The Twilight Zone on CBS All Access, I revisited the original series. Widely considered one of the greatest television shows of all time, Rod Serling's science fiction/horror anthology series ran for 156 episodes over the course of five seasons between 1959 and 1964 on CBS.
The original series attracted an impressive array of actors who would go on to find great success, including William Shatner, Robert Redford, Lee Marvin, Martin Landau, Burt Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Dennis Hopper, Carol Burnett, Dick York, Ron Howard, Roddy McDowall, Robert Duvall, and many more.
Less discussed but equally important, the show also boasted a number of talented directors. Some were established filmmakers attracted to the Kafkaesque material, while others were eager up-and-comers cutting their teeth in television. Here are five famed horror directors who entered The Twilight Zone.
Tumblr media
1. Richard Donner
Richard Donner’s claim to fame among the horror genre is The Omen, but he’s also responsible for bringing The Goonies, Superman, Lethal Weapon, and Scrooged to the screen. Long before crafting such beloved films, he directed six episodes of The Twilight Zone, including one of the show’s most well-known installments. “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” - which was later remade by George Miller for Twilight Zone: The Movie and again for the new reboot - stars William Shatner as a salesman who sees a monster on the wing of his airplane during a flight. Donner also helmed “The Brain Center at Whipple’s,” “The Jeopardy Room,” “Sounds and Silences,” “From Agnes – with Love,” and “Come Wander with Me,” which was the last episode of the series to be filmed. Perhaps influenced by his experiences on The Twilight Zone, Donner later served as executive producer of Tales from the Crypt.

2. Donald Siegel
Donald Siegel is known for directing the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. He also did five films with Clint Eastwood, including Dirty Harry and Escape from Alcatraz, as well as John Wayne’s final effort, The Shootist. For The Twilight Zone, he worked on two episodes from the show’s fifth and final season. “Uncle Simon,” is one of three episodes to feature Robby the Robot of Forbidden Planet fame, and “The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross,” in which Don Gordon stars in the titular role as an insensitive man with the power to trade both physical and personality traits with any other person.

3. Joseph M. Newman
Joseph M. Newman is known for the sci-fi classic This Island Earth, which - despite being a good film - was famously the subject of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. Nearly a decade after its release, he directed four episodes for The Twilight Zone’s fifth season. His contributions include “In Praise of Pip,” the season opener and first American TV show to mention the Vietnam War; “The Last Night of a Jockey,” a memorable episode in which Mickey Rooney is the sole actor; “Black Leather Jackets,” about an alien invasion; and “The Bewitchin’ Pool,” the show’s final episode. Newman also tackled ten episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour around the same time he was working on The Twilight Zone.

4. Boris Sagal
Boris Sagal is behind the Charlton Heston-starring cult movie The Omega Man, the second adaptation of regular Twilight Zone writer Richard Matheson’s influential 1954 novel, I Am Legend. He also directed Elvis Presley in Girl Happy. A few years prior, he helmed two episodes of The Twilight Zone. “The Silence” is an intriguing offering, inspired by Anton Chekhov’s short story "The Bet," in which a talkative man is offered $500,000 to remain silent for a year. “The Arrival,” meanwhile, boasts a double twist.

5. Stuart Rosenberg
Stuart Rosenberg directed the original The Amityville Horror, along with the Oscar-winning Cool Hand Luke. He’s also responsible for three Twilight Zone episodes: “I Shot an Arrow into the Air,” which would go on to impact Rod Serling’s Planet of the Apes script, “He’s Alive,” an interesting piece starring Dennis Hopper that involves Adolph Hitler; and “Mute,” adapted by Richard Matheson from his own short story. He’s another director who supplemented his Twilight Zone work with Alfred Hitchcock Presents, handling five episodes.

The Twilight Zone's first revival, which kicked off a three-season run in 1985, attracted a number of notable horror filmmakers, including Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street), William Friedkin (The Exorcist), Joe Dante (Gremlins), Tommy Lee Wallace (It), Paul Lynch (Prom Night), and Jeannot Szwarc (Jaws II). While it didn’t quite live up to the original, it’s fun to see the masters of the genre become part of the legacy. The Twilight Zone was revived again for a single season in 2002.
The Twilight Zone’s original run holds up remarkably well. While certain trivial aspects may be dated, the core themes remain relevant 60 years later. I highly recommend revisiting it while you enjoy the new incarnation. The complete series is streaming on Netflix and is available on Blu-ray and DVD. You can also watch the entire first episode of the new Twilight Zone series for free below.
