Tick Tick Boom: Translating from stage to screen
Tumblr media
Rating: 10/10
Synopsis: A film based on the autobiographical musical of the same name written by Johnothan Larson. Starring Andrew Garfield as Johnothan Larson, it covers his story of trying to make it to Broadway, his failing relationship with his girlfriend, and his friends aids diagnosis.
Tumblr media
As a fan of musicals and of Andrew Garfield I was excited when this film was coming out. I had listened to rent and knew who Johnathon Larson was however not much about his life. This film is very emotional at points and is all lead by its music however, I imagine they had their problems.
The original stage musical was written as a one man show which Larson started preforming in 1990 and was originally called "Boho Days" named after the second track. It covers his doubts about entering the musical theater industry as he is going on 30 without a big break.
After dying in 1996, the play was rejigged to a three person show, and got its name changed to Tick Tick Boom. This revised version however was only ever played off Broadway in the year 2001.
The film does an excellent job at converting the story and songs to ones for film. Whilst they keep the stage preforming elements cutting to Andrew Garfield playing a piano every once and a while, they don't rely on this to tell the entire story and instead are able to make visually interesting ways to convey the story along side the music. They use a few montages, which include choreography, again tying the film back to its original routes in musical theatre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also a stereotype of musical films casting big stars for their name and acting talent and not so much their musical skills. Recent examples of this is the Cats Musical film, Beauty and the Beast and Les Miserables. All of which casted actors whom are famous, and put them through intense singing courses to teach them how to sing in a number of weeks, which reflects poorly in the films soundtracks.
Whilst Andrew Garfield is a big name actor, he also has a history in musical theatre and did an amazing job at being able to portray Larson. The film decided to put the music and the soundtrack first which I think is very considerate of what Larson himself would have wanted.
The film is also a good watch for those whom aren't hugely into musicals and don't have any prior knowledge, as it has some good themeing, interesting visuals and fun characters which you grow to care about.
Overall, the film puts its soundtrack first and I believe this makes it one of the most successful musical films of the genre in the last decade. It manages to incorporate the fun and most emotional parts of the original musical into the film whilst adding in new ideas and things for both fans of the original and new watchers to enjoy. What could have been difficult to translate to the screen the film makers appeared to do so effortlessly.

Brie Larson is one of the most unproblematic people to work for Marvel, and it sucks that people shit on her for simply talking about diversity in films.
Also, remember how people were comparing her ass to Tom Holland's and using it as an excuse to shit on her all because they thought her ass was flat? That woman has done nothing wrong, but people like to nitpick at her for the dumbest reason.
There are actual problematic Marvel actors like Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnathan Majors, and Evangeline Lily (there's probably more problematic Marvel actors that I don't know about). These people actually have done things that deserve to be called out on. But y'all choose to complain about an unproblematic actress all because she's a feminist and for calling out how underrepresented marginalized people are in Hollywood.
It's almost 2024. We need to start treating Brie Larson and marginalized Marvel actors much better. We don't need it to be Star Wars Fandom 2.0.

So a lot of people are confused on what a kicktoon is, basically a kicktoon (which I named after the crowdfunding website Kickstarter and the Nicktoons line of marketing used by Nickelodeon for their cartoons in the 90s and 2000s) is a crowdfunded indie animated web series that uses the exact same formula that was created by Hazbin Hotel and appeared as a result of the “boom” created by it. And for those of you who don’t know what the difference is between a kicktoon and a normal indie web cartoon is, then here’s the controversial meme I made to point out the formula:
Tumblr media
Personally I’m not a fan of the genre because I think it’s the animation equivalent of the mascot horror genre of video games and the megamusical genre of stage plays, but in some ways it’s worse than mascot horror and the megamusical genre, because instead of starting out with heavy hitters like FNaF and Cats respectively, it essentially started out with Garten of Ban Ban and the broadway version of Starlight Express. I haven’t seen any other kicktoon outside of Helluva Boss and the test pilot for Hazbin Hotel, but if that’s the catalyst and gold standard for the genre, then I’m not holding my breath for one’s like Lackadaisy and The Amazing Digital Circus.
Now don’t get me wrong, I technically don’t hate the idea of kicktoons, in fact I actually see a lot of potential in the genre, however, I feel like this potential has been largely ignored in favor of people trying to replicate the success of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, and that was largely the case with the mascot horror and megamusical genres, that was, until the release of these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Friendly Neighborhood and Rent+Wicked basically served as a breath of fresh air for for the mascot horror genre and megamusical genre respectively, because instead of trying to replicate the success of previous entries in the genre, they all tried to do their own unique things to stand out from the rest. That’s because they weren’t made with the intention of replicating the success of other works, but rather they were made without those works or their respective genres in mind. MFN was made to be a spiritual successor to both the works of Jim Henson and Resident Evil style horror games (similar to how the video game Cuphead was made with the intent of being a spiritual successor to the golden age of animation and video games from the nes and Super Nintendo era of gaming) and both Johnathan Larson and Stephen Sondhiem had personal grudges about the megamusical genre and decided to make plays that wouldn’t follow the formula set by the genre, and surprisingly, all three were big hits. But I feel like that the kicktoon genre has yet to receive it’s MFN or Rent/Wicked style saving grace. If we don’t try to point out how this genre is slowly starting to ruin indie web animation, then there might never be a saving grace for the genre if people keep at it and keep listening to Saberspark, Cellspex, and all the other shills of the genre:
Tumblr media
Of course, this is all just my opinion so feel free to (respectfully) disagree with me if you like.

My Pitch for Schmigadoon! Season Three - ‘Into The Schmoods’
A few years have gone by and Josh and Melissa have twins (Oliver and Annie). Life is stressful and the family struggles to connect with each other, so either Josh or Melissa suggest taking a family vacation to Schmigadoon or Schmicago to destress. They get there and find a deserted woods, with nobody around. There’s a brief interlude with dancing rats (Cats) and a woman who looks remarkably like Bobbie from last season who insists that she’s a train (Starlight Express). There’s no catch this time, the family can leave whenever they want, but just as they go to leave (filled with disappointment) a chorus of children approach (the kid choir from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) and Josh and Melissa’s kids get excited and run off into the woods with them. The rest of the season is Josh and Melissa searching for their children whilst learning Into The Woodsy life lessons about parenting from Schmigadoonians who now take the form of fairytale characters (Into The Woods) and (confusingly) Les Mis inspired characters such as a French woman who had to sell her hair in order to provide for her son (Fantine from Les Mis but genderswapped Cosette to bring back the boy who played Carson in Season One). Meanwhile the twins become disillusioned with life in the kid chorus and stage a coup against their leader (the Narrator from Joseph with subtle influences from Bill Sykes from Oliver). The season ends with the family being greeted by a third leprechaun, the triplet to the other two leprechauns, who’s name is Johnathan (in honour of Johnathan Larson). The final song of the season is a mix of Seasons of Love and Children Will Listen as Josh and Melissa - along with their children - return to modern society with a closer bond than ever before.
So what do you think of my pitch?
