The Fog (1980)
Tumblr media
The Fog isn't breaking any new grounds. Sometimes, innovation isn't so important. This is a classic ghost story, the kind that would inspire no sot much imitators, but deviations that spice up the formula by adding twists and unexpected turns. This horror film is straightforward, well made, and it delivers exactly what it promises.
On the 100th anniversary of the coastal town of Antonio Bay, a strange glowing fog creeps in from the sea. At the stroke of midnight, lights turn on and off, objects move at their own volition, and vengeful specters emerge to commit unearthly murder.
You can see where this is going. It’s the town's centennial. Weird stuff starts happening. The supernatural business has to be tied to old sins or a dark secret. Several characters do their best to survive the supernatural assailants while uncovering the mystery. Every horror author must tackle this idea at some point. If you’re going to subject yourself to this tried-and-true ghost story, the way to do it is by watching the very best of them. I think The Fog is a serious contender.
The way Carpenter handles the ghosts is the best aspect of the film. In most movies (particularly modern ones), the apparitions are created via fancy special effects and the technicians can't help showing off. Here, the ghosts are always in the shadows or lit from behind you only get a rough idea of what they look like. Your mind fills in the gaps - a sure-fire way to generate chills. There’s a spooky stillness to them. The ghosts slowly walk towards, fully aware time is on their side - they’re already dead and there’s no way anyone is going to get away from them. In a few shots, we see a bit more than is necessary. Overall, this is the template for how to handle paranormal assailants in a film.
Fans of John Carpenter will appreciate that his signature is all over the picture. The music is atmospheric, the jump scares are well used, the general tone is "less is more", and the characters are likeable. You won’t find any of the dumb teenagers begging to be butchered here. The casting is filled with horror movie favorites, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh, Nancy Loomis, and several other frequent Carpenter collaborators.
The Fog sets up the mood perfectly. Its opening scenes could've been a short film all by itself From there, there's nothing that will blow your socks off, nothing all that “original” but that's fine. A tale like this is part of our collective history. If there wasn't a movie like this one out there, you'd be surprised. For a low-budget production, it looks terrific. Many little details elevate it beyond just a generic ghost movie. With it being widely available on DVD and Blu-ray and consistently packaged with some good bonus features, it’s worth checking out, particularly if you're exploring all aspects of horror cinema. (On DVD, July 30, 2015)

(Literary License Podcast) The book was released on 01 January 1979 and would be the watershed moment of Peter Straub career and become a bestselling smash.  His earlier work had great critical acclaim but this would be the book that made him a household name.  The story would involve five elderly gentleman in which  the book explores their five narratives into a chilling story.  This is considered one of the greatest horror novels of the 20th Century .  Some of the characters and location would pop up in other books by Straub such as the novels Koko and Floating Dragon. This 1981 film would bring together some of the greatest actors from the golden age which would include Fred Astair, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and John Houseman and would make Alice Krige an actress to look out for.   It follows a group of elderly businessmen in New England who gather to recount their involvement in a woman's death decades prior when one of them suspects her ghost has been haunting him. The film differs from the book as it removes a fifth characters story within the framework of the film.  the filming process was emotionally turbulent for star Fred Astaire, who confided in Irvin that he felt he was going to die or be murdered while shooting the film, and at one point considered dropping out of the production.

This week we’re talking about Ghost Story from 1981. The Chowder Society is a group I’d like to join, minus the dark past. Based a novel by Peter Straub the movie differs from book quite a bit. Day 28 of #socialdistancing - all three #TheThing movies starting at 5:30 PM EST today - #bingewatching continues! 🤓🛋️🍺📺📡🎭🔪🩸😱🎞️🏴‍☠️🦜 Mr. Machen: 11:55, almost midnight. Enough time for one more story. One more story before 12:00, just to keep us warm. In five minutes, it will be the 21st of April. One hundred years ago on the 21st of April, out in the waters around Spivey Point, a small clipper ship drew toward land. Suddenly, out of the night, the fog rolled in. For a moment, they could see nothing, not a foot in front of them. Then, they saw a light. By God, it was a fire burning on the shore, strong enough to penetrate the swirling mist. They steered a course toward the light. But it was a campfire, like this one. The ship crashed against the rocks, the hull sheared in two, masts snapped like a twig. The wreckage sank, with all the men aboard. At the bottom of the sea, lay the Elizabeth Dane, with her crew, their lungs filled with salt water, their eyes open, staring to the darkness. And above, as suddenly as it come, the fog lifted, receded back across the ocean and never came again. But it is told by the fishermen, and their fathers and grandfathers, that when the fog returns to Antonio Bay, the men at the bottom of the sea, out in the water by Spivey Point will rise up and search for the campfire that led them to their dark, icy death. 🤓🛋️🍺📺📡🎭🔪🩸😱🎞️🏴‍☠️🦜 #OoH #teeoftheday #horrorteeoftheday @frightrags #TheFog #1980 #director #JohnCarpenter #actor #JohnHouseman #IMDBquotes #ilovehorrormovies #horrorkeepsmesane #SundayFunday #SundayMotivation #FridayNightHorrorShow #MeetUp #Online #WatchParty #horrornerd — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2VjruDs

John Carpenter’s first post-Halloween venture into the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired, apocalyptic vein that he would continue to mine in films like The Thing (1982) and Prince of Darkness (1987), THE FOG depicts the seaside California town of Antonio Bay in the grips of an ancient curse and a creeping mist. #4K #4KRestoration #AdrienneBarbeau #CharlesCyphers #DarrowIgus #George"Buck"Flower #HalHolbrook #JamesCanning #JamieLeeCurtis #JanetLeigh #JimHaynie #JohnCarpenter #JohnF.Goff #JohnHouseman #Movie #movies #NancyKyes #ReginaWaldon #RialtoPictures #StudioCanal #TheFog #TomAtkins #TyMitchell #NothingButGeek #NBG #NBGeek https://ift.tt/2Qs54vV https://ift.tt/2P4GD7l
