Hawkeye's Tony Dalton on Playing Swordsman and Better Call Saul’s Final Season
With the six-part Hawkeye series now streaming on Disney+, I recently got to speak with Tony Dalton about playing Jack Duquesne/Swordsman in the MCU series. As most of you know, Hawkeye takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) go down a dark path of vengeance in Asia following the dusting of his family during the Blip. Of course, that wasn't the end of it, as Barton also saw his friend Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) sacrifice herself in order to obtain the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir. The series incorporates both of these elements and introduces fan favorite Kate Bishop (Steinfeld) and also stars Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d'Arcy James, Alaqua Cox, along with a golden retriever named Jolt performing as fan-favorite character Lucky the Pizza Dog. Florence Pugh is also set to reprise her role as Yelena Belova from Black Widow. Hawkeye was created by Jonathan Igla (Mad Men). The series is produced by Trinh Tran, Rhys Thomas, Kevin Feige, and Jonathan Igla, with episodes directed by Thomas and Bert & Bertie.
During the interview, Dalton revealed what Marvel told him about his character before signing on, what surprised him about working on his first Marvel project, how he got ready to play Swordsman, what he’s excited for people to see in the series, and more. In addition, since Dalton also plays Lalo Salamanca on Better Call Saul, I asked him what he can tease about the final season’s scripts. While he was of course guarded about revealing too much, he did say:
“You have no idea what’s going to happen. It’s out of control what these guys wrote. Out of control.”
I can’t wait.
Watch what Tony Dalton had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about.
Tony Dalton How much did Marvel tell him about the role before signing on? How much research did he do once he found out he would be playing Swordsman? How he watched a lot of Errol Flynn. What surprised him about working on a Marvel series that he didn’t expect going in? What can he tease about the final season of Better Call Saul? What is it like when people see him in real life? What is he most excited for people see in the Hawkeye series?

Hawkeye Directors Share Update On Marvel Show's Progress
Directing duo Bert & Bertie offer an update on the post-production process of Disney+'s upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series Hawkeye.
Directing duo Bert & Bertie have offered an update on the post-production process of Disney+'s upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series Hawkeye. Developed by Mad Men alum Jonathan Igla, the series will further explore the backstory of the Stan Lee and Don Heck-created archer. Jeremy Renner returns to the titular role and will lead a cast including Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, and Tony Dalton. The show will mark the MCU debuts of Kate Bishop and Echo, with Hailee Steinfeld and Alaqua Cox portraying the heroes, respectively.
Exact plot details are still unknown regarding the latest MCU series, but it is set in a post-Avengers: Endgame landscape and will see Renner's Clint Barton begin training Steinfeld's Bishop to take over the Hawkeye mantle. The series will also explore Barton's time as the vigilante Ronin, briefly seen in the epic conclusion of the Infinity Saga. While fans are thoroughly excited for the debut of Bishop, Marvel Studios has shown its faith in the project early with a spinoff series centered on Cox's Echo already in development.
Directors Bert & Bertie took to Instagram over the weekend to share with fans the news that post-production on the Disney+ MCU series has officially wrapped. Posting a photo of some tasty-looking cookies, the duo shared their appreciation for editors Rosanne Tan and Tim Roche and the rest of Marvel's post-production team for helping them and the rest of the directors put together their cuts.
With filming having only just wrapped over a month ago on the series, it's rather impressive to learn that the assembly of director's cuts on the episodes has already been completed. While we still don't know how many episodes the series will have, the quicker post-production cycle seems to indicate it either began early in an effort to make its late 2021 premiere or the show was not in need of as much visual effects work as other MCU projects. That being said, it's more likely the former is true, given Marvel's careful planning of development, production, and releases for its projects.
Now that the cuts are assembled and the premiere of Loki is coming up, fans should be able to look forward to glimpses at Disney+'s Hawkeye coming over the next few months. Looking back at the Disney+ MCU release cycle, more images and trailers for Falcon and the Winter Soldier arrived as WandaVision got underway, making it all the more likely the studio will begin unveiling material for the Renner-fronted series soon. Not to mention, with four more movies and three new series on the way, Marvel fans have a lot to look forward to as the year goes on.

Hawkeye, the TV series featuring Marvel’s masked marksman, has found its directors. Or, at least, some of them.
Bert and Bertie, the nom de plume for Amber Finlayson (Bert) and Katie Ellwood (Bertie) and known for helming Amazon’s coming-of-age comedy, Troop Zero, have been tapped to captain a block of episodes of the Marvel Studios series that will air on Disney+.
Also pulling the string for a block will be Rhys Thomas, a Saturday Night Live helmer who has also directed Staten Island Summer, Amazon’s action comedy series Comrade Detective, and John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.
Jeremy Renner, who played the role in the big-screen films, will be reprising Clint Barton, who first made his comic debut back in 1964’s Tales of Suspense #57. One of the arcs of the series is Barton’s mentoring of a new generation of archer, Kate Bishop. Hailee Steinfeld was previously in negotiations for the part but it is unclear if her deal has closed. Marvel had no comment.
Jonathan Igla (Mad Men, Pitch) is writing the series.
Hawkeye is part of the first wave of Marvel shows that was due to hit Disney+ starting in fall 2020. The first show was to have been The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but the series has been delayed to the coronavirus pandemic affecting production. Other shows include WandaVision (spring 2021, if things go as planned), Loki (also spring 2021), then Hawkeye. All will see the silver screen thespians toplining the series.
At D23 in 2019, Marvel chief Kevin Feige announced that shows featuring She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight are also in the works.
The past credits of the director hired suggests that the show will have a light-hearted tone and that the directors could be following the path set by Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed comedies before undertaking the massive Captain America and Avengers movies.
Bert and Bernie made their debut with 2016’s Dance Camp, then followed it up with Troop Zero, which made a splash at 2019’s Sundance Film Festival where Amazon snapped it up. Colorful and energetic tones have been a signature of their work, as has snappy relationships. The duo have also directed episodes of Hulu’s buzzy period show, The Great, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult.
Bert and Bernie are repped by Verve. Thomas is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Ziffren Brittenham.

Variety reports that Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld has been offered the role of Kate on the upcoming Disney+ series. Steinfeld is best known for her roles in The Coen Brothers’ True Grit, the Pitch Perfect series, Bumblebee, and voicing Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Hawkeye, which is eyed for a fall 2021 release on Disney+, will reportedly be written by Jonathan Igla, best known for his work on Mad Men. Beyond that, and now this, we can only speculate 0n how Clint Barton (Renner) and Kate’s stories will be told. Will it be similar to the comics? Will Renner give up the mantle permanently? Will Kate make it into the theatrical films?
“Yes,” is probably the answer to that last question, which means it’s not a simple decision for Steinfeld or whichever actress takes on the role officially. Not only are you just committing to this show, you’re looking at the next decade-plus of your life.

Man: No Way Home a dicembre 2021.

Hawkeye Episode 1 and 2 Review: Welcome to the Party, Pal
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s Hawkeye Episodes 1 and 2
Hawkeye Episodes 1 and 2
After more trailers, TV spots, and exclusive clips than you can shake a stick at, the first two episodes of Marvel’s Hawkeye are now streaming on Disney+.
But who asked for it? Hawkeye has steadily maintained his place in the Avengers line-up since 2012’s first team-up movie, and has been dutifully played by the double Oscar-nominated Jeremy Renner over the last decade, but Clint Barton is still a supporting character that the MCU itself has regularly mocked as being surplus to requirements.
Arguably, fewer MCU fans were as hyped for this series as they were for other supporting character Disney+ projects like Loki, but fans of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s spectacular 2012-2015 Hawkeye Marvel Comics run – which thankfully this series borrows from liberally – tentatively got their hopes up.
As one of them, I’m pleased to say the new show is a seasonal treat. The first two installments of Hawkeye balance a mix of set-up and character-building quite deftly thanks to Mad Men writer Jonathan Igla and Documentary Now! director Rhys Thomas.
We catch up with Clint in New York post-Avengers: Endgame while his grief over losing Natasha Romanoff on Vormir bubbles under the surface, barely contained by his family commitments, his joy at being reunited with them, and his intention to give them the best Christmas ever after losing them to The Blip for five years.
Suffering through Rogers: The Musical’s version of the Battle of New York, complete with singing, dancing, and factual inaccuracies (wait, Ant-Man was there during the Time Heist!) Clint almost breaks down seeing a version of Black Widow on stage. Leaving his kids and scuttling off to the bathroom, he sees some “Thanos was right” graffiti – a call-back to our own “Thanos did nothing wrong” nonsense – and takes a moment to ingest the notion.
Renner’s ability to do a lot of character work with a reaction shot means the audience takes a quick hit for his triumphs and losses in the wake of Thanos’ misjudged pursuit. As the episodes progress, Clint struggles to cope with praise and recognition from the public for his service. Deep down, he still feels that he should have been the one to sacrifice his life for the Soul Stone, not Nat, and the survivor’s guilt is slowly killing him. But in this exact moment, we also realize that Rogers: The Musical is so godawful that Clint kinda agrees with the graffiti. This is when I knew Hawkeye was going to be something special.
Clint’s already-shaky Christmas is then utterly ruined when young, self-proclaimed “world’s greatest archer” Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) accidentally throws a spanner in the works. A wealthy 22-year-old over-achiever with superheroic ambitions, Kate lost her dad in the Battle of New York as a child and became fixated on Clint’s part in helping the Avengers win, taking martial arts and archery lessons and absolutely smashing it.
But when she takes too much of an interest in her mother’s new fiancé and follows him to a secret auction for the scoffing uber-rich, she ends up nicking Clint’s old Ronin suit and alerting the Tracksuit Mafia to Ronin’s re-emergence, creating all manner of problems for Clint and herself. He collars her in the suit and sets about rectifying the situation, but Kate is already involved in a deadly mystery: someone has killed her mother’s fiancé’s uncle, Armand III, and she suspects there could be more to it than meets the eye.
Meanwhile, the Tracksuit Mafia is revealed to be under the control of Maya Lopez aka Echo (Alaqua Cox), a deaf athlete and martial artist heavily connected to Daredevil, Kingpin and Moon Knight in the comics. Her right hand man is Kazi (Fra Free) aka The Clown, and it appears that MCU Echo will be portrayed as less of a heroine here than we might have expected – at least at first.
Two episodes in, and many of Hawkeye’s pieces are already on the chessboard. Kate’s mother Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) is deeply suspicious and dexterous, and wears red in present-day scenes (either as a cheeky “red herring” or a nod to her latter-day West Coast Avengers reveal as a vampire), and Kate is clearly in line to be passed the MCU Hawkeye mantle. Steinfeld is predictably great in the role, so it never feels awkward. Along with the style choices that the Hawkeye team have made for her character and the way she’s clearly thrown herself so completely into being Kate Bishop, she’s truly nailing it.
Tantalizingly, Echo’s introduction also signals the integration of Netflix’s Daredevil crew into the MCU, with Spider-Man: No Way Home arriving in a few weeks – I feel like we all know by now that Charlie Cox is destined to make an appearance in it.
There’s also the mysterious watch that the Tracksuit Mafia were out to snag at the auction, found in the debris of Avengers Compound. Echo was clearly desperate to acquire it, but for what purpose? And who did it belong to?
Alongside the the show’s intriguing mysteries were a number of other highlights. Rogers: The Musical was inevitably one of them, but I’m not sure how I feel about these tributes to Captain America’s legacy becoming A Thing in the MCU. What with the Smithsonian’s notable collection in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the Statue of Liberty holding Steve Rogers’ shield in No Way Home, it’s giving second-hand cringe every time I imagine how embarrassed Steve would be. I also loved Clint’s weary, slow-motion larping, and the call-back to Scott Lang’s selfie rejection from the kids in Avengers: Endgame who were more hyped to see the Hulk.
Overall, I really enjoyed these first couple of episodes. With the MCU introductions of Kate, Lucky the Pizza Dog (the adorable Jolt), Eleanor, Kazi, and Echo, Marvel Studios has created an appealing, Die Hard-esque world for Clint Barton here; full of jingle bells, bows, and bullets. It suits him down to the ground, though we do get the sense that this might be Renner’s swansong as Clint. I wasn’t really expecting to be sad about that, but here we are.

Disney+ Taps ‘Mad Men’ Writer Jonathan Igla To Helm Its ‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff
Remember when we used to argue about Disney snatching up all the best independent directors for Marvel movies? It might be time to brush off those arguments and apply them to television. With Disney+ set to launch later this year—and Disney promising to unleash a flurry of television shows based on its ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel properties—it seems that the new social media power move will be complaining about Disney snatching up all the best showrunners.
