The thing is “My love becomes a vampire so I’ll become one too to stay with her” can’t hit the same anymore. It’s become just a “ooh being a vampire would be sexy!” or “yay we get to live forever!” romantic thing versus the most defiantly heretical devotion that would make the paper it was written on burn. There’s no “ooh~ vampires~” but rather being willing to join everything you fear and dread the most, that once shattered your mind to endure.
It also just can’t hit the same without that backdrop of severe Victorian social mores one dare not set a foot outside, and a lifetime of being bound by them. Or without the certainty that heaven is real, and you’re willing to bar yourself from it for eternity if your love isn’t granted entrance.
This is gothic Romance with a capital R at its pinnacle and I’m never going to stop thinking about it

NOBODY is doing goth love like Mina "babe, read my funeral rites" and Jonathan "if Mina must become a vamprie, I'll face God and walk backwards into Mina's loving, undead embrace" Harker. Nobody.

To one thing I have made up my mind: if we find out that Mina must be a vampire in the end, then she shall not go into that unknown and terrible land alone. I suppose it is thus that in old times one vampire meant many; just as their hideous bodies could only rest in sacred earth, so the holiest love was the recruiting sergeant for their ghastly ranks.

Mina Murray Harker is so competent and so inquisitive and so passionate and so immovable and so stubborn and so powerful and so fiendishly smart and so tormented and so broken and so heroic and and and
and Hollywood sees her and goes "Mina needs to be sexually liberated by The Right Man, get sexily drinked and lie about being assaulted. Give all her ideas and contributions and detective work to Van Helsing and all of her pathos and torment to Dracula. Also make Lucy a bitch who had it coming #feminism"

Dracula adaptations didn't do shit right but that one French Dracula: Entre L'Amour et la Mort musical did one thing right (beside creating a couple of total bangers) and that thing is having Jonathan sing with absolute crumbling horror, as he's wandering in the Castle Dracula:
Mina, où es tu?
Mina, parle-moi!
J'ai peur de perdre la raison,
J'ai si peur d'oublier ton nom
which translates to:
Mina, where are you?
Mina, speak to me!
I'm afraid to lose my mind,
I'm so afraid to forget your name
AND THAT ALWAYS BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. REACHING FROM DARKNESS TO THE ONLY LIGHT HE STILL KNOWS. GODDAMN

Was thinking about Quincey Harker having to live through the horrors of WW1, and read some angsty stuff of Jonathan escaping the castle, and had a little plot bunny of time slipping, war traumatized Quincey stumbling into the wild woods of Transylvania, and finding vampire traumatized Jonathan , and the now the same-aged father and son have to survive together and escape back to civilization
Does Quincey even recognize his wreck of a father, who can barely remember his own name at this point? Is Jonathan traumatized more by his strange rescuer’s hints of eldritchness? (Kid was born from two almost vampires he’s definitely got some). They can try and figure that stuff out once they make it past the wolves…
Edit: Comic starts here

“Feminist” academia’s reaction to Mina’s devotion in today’s Dracula update is such a perfect example of why intersectionality is vital in feminism. It derides Mina’s loyalty to Jonathan, and chalks her not letting his disability deter her from marrying him up to mindlessly falling into serving the patriarchy bla bla bla
Not a thought spared for what this could mean for disabled people—that loyalty through sickness and trauma is beautiful and romantic, or the worth of love that isn’t conditional on someone being able-bodied. No reflection on why “she should have dumped him because he’s not good enough for her anymore” might be harmful.
Not only that, but later we’re going to see how this unconditional love through sickness and in health is fully mutual. While this book was by no means pro-feminist, treating its moments of beauty re: disability as being backwards and oppressive is not the way to dismantle that.

"Stoker's Mrs. Harker personifies a certain kind of woman--one who simply is a New Woman, in Grand's sense of the term, without identifying as such. One self-confident enough to assume that anyone who comes to know her will learn to trust her competence and value her judgment; one who sees marriage as an equal partnership that will be enriched by her skills and contributions; one whose chosen partner is a man who respects her as a peer and friend--a New Man, in short.
The unremarkable unions of the Mina Murrays and the Jonathan Harkers are fruitful, Stoker shows. They might just "make the world a pleasanter place to live in."
-Winstead, K. (2020), Mrs. Harker and Dr. Van Helsing: Dracula, Fin-de-Siecle Feminisms, and the New Wo/Man.
