Middlemarch

So yesterday I finished Middlemarch after a very long time, maybe something like 8 months? I don’t know. There are very few words to describe how I feel about this book, except maybe the 316,059 words that comprise the novel. In short, I love it so, so much. It seems like its going to be a real boring slog, but its actually pretty exciting. 

And I am very sad I am finished it. Even though it fell apart half way through making it very difficult to read. 

But! After finishing it yesterday, I was looking for a film version of it to prolong the Middlemarch feeling in my life, and came across Middlemarch: The Series.

Which is a youtube series retelling Middlemarch, set in a college dorm and QUEER. So, basically the perfect storm. It is pretty brilliant. 

Unfortunately, I finished the web series today (don’t judge me)(or do I guess I won’t know either way), so I am fresh out of Middlemarch material again. Maybe I’ll watch the BBC miniseries. Or read more George Eliot Novels. At the moment though, I’ve started The Name of the Rose. 

Also, since I’ve given like 6 hours of my life to Middlemarch: The Series, and uncountable hours reading Middlemarch, I thought I might write an essay studying the adaptational relationship between these two.

Topic for writing today is lessons that I have learned.⁣ ⁣ Well life teach us a lot of things, doesn't mean we can remember them all... And sometimes, we makes mistakes... again, fall in the same hole... AGAIN...⁣ ⁣ Like when you saw something interesting on social media, don't trust them all completely. Though I have to admit that spending time at Journey to the south, turn out to be delightful. ⁣ The staff on duty greeted us warmly, explained that due to physical distancing and goverment rule, we have to fill out form like our name, date and time of visit and so on. All by barcode scanned including to see the menu. ⁣ ⁣ Sayangnya sih ini sudah tempat terakhir dikunjungi pas bareng jadi sudah kenyang banget. Saya akhirnya pesan hot chocolate saja sementara teman pesan mocha dan makanan untuk dibawa pulang. And naturally, we spent the rest of the evening with stories of our life and lessons learned from it.⁣ ⁣ Ever since the pandemik, I realized than ever that we don't live forever (unless we are vampires so.... nope) and there is no need to have that kind of attachment to things and perhaps even people and especially social media. ⁣ ⁣ Ketika mesti WFH dan saya melihat segala kaset (iyaaaa, masih banyak iniiiih... bingung deh sekarang), CD lagu, DVD, buku sampai tiket nonton yang ketika dulu itu rasanya koleksi berharga... Sekarang? Hadeh, mau dijual atau dikasih ke siapa ya biar bisa bikin lega kamar. Disayang-sayang, toh juga suatu hari nanti barang-barang itu tidak akan jadi milik saya lagi. Apa yang penting saat ini mungkin menjadi sangat tidak ada artinya di beberapa tahun kemudian. ⁣ ⁣ Eh, jadi kemana-mana ngobrolnya... Yerba Mate

People here love Yerba Mate. Last night while walking through a park with my mum, everywhere we looked people were drinking Yerba Mate from leather cups, wooden cups or the traditional gourd cups. At the marketa in said park one can buy a Mate cup made of a cow’s hoof. People bring around thermoses with hot water to refill their cups. It seemed cozy, so today I made Yerba Mate for the first time. I bought the bombilla (straw with filter) and the actual Yerba Mate (the leaves) at our local Carrefour. Our apartment came with a wooden cup. 

Here is how I made it. It is pretty simple. 

1.  Pour leaves into cup and shake to one side to make a mountain and a valley. 

2. Put in some cold water and let it seep into the leaves. 

3. Pour in the hot water and stick that bombilla in there. 

Thats it. 

It tastes like intense green tea. It will take some getting used to, but I can understand the appeal.

Sometimes we even suspected that the staff in charge play the music loudly on purpose. Because we were chatting forever & seems to forget to finish our meal and get out. But anyway, thanks God when my friend & I were at Journey To The South, no loud music ruin our mood.
