You know what really grinds my gears?? I desperately want to be a public historian. I was trained by one of the best public historians in the country. I got accepted to two really good public history programs (one of which is a prestigious name). It is the only area of history that I actively research in my free time
But I got a sucky advisor who’s chair of the department and who runs the center for public history and who takes on at least 6 incoming grad students every year as her advisees, which means she doesn’t have time for them. But I can’t switch advisors and stay in public history because of stupid office politics and bc no one really wants to ruffle the chair’s feathers
So either I switch to research history and gut it out for a year and a half or I do public history and resent whoever my advisor is or I drop out. Those are my options

Stop shaming people for being passionate about the things that they love. Stop mocking people for having unusual interests. Like, honestly, I’m so tired of feeling embarrassed for being "too much". If being too much means having deep interests that fill my life with romanticism and excitement, then let me be!! I’d much rather listen to anyone ranting about their latest obsession with 16th century swords than have a boring ordinary conversation with those who shame passionate people.

okay so the main criticism i've been seeing against episode 8 is that beelzebub (among other things) is "too nice" to be the sin of gluttony, because she's an attentive hostess, because she expresses worry over blitz's excess drinking, etc., and i wanna talk about it.
the thing is, i feel like this complaint is rooted in the most basic, somewhat cliche idea of the sin of gluttony, and a somewhat boring approach to bee's character in general. the idea is that, as the sin of gluttony, bee should be encouraging over-indulgence, excess, and the self-destructive aspects of party culture and drinking.
but she's the queen bee. she clearly explains that she can feel the "energy" of everyone at her party, and i think that's very important to analyzing exactly what gluttony means to her. instead of indulging in food and alcohol and drugs and being selfish (as gluttony is generally expected to be about), bee feeds on the ENERGY of the demons around her. and in order to get the best energy she can, she needs to be making sure everyone is actually having FUN and having a good time. gluttony, in this sense, is about EXTRAVAGANCE, having the best quality of everything, rather than just everything in general.
i also think this is why she was so put-off by blitz's actions. when he chugs the entire barrel of alcohol and then is absolutely wasted beyond all reason for the rest of the party, he's NOT actually engaging in her sin. he's not being gluttonous; he's not drinking to have a good time or to indulge or to have fun - he's drowning himself in alcohol because he's trying to forget and ignore all his problems, which is a sin much more akin to pride. his energy feels bad to bee because he's not having fun, he's deeply hurt and trying to distract himself by being self-destructive, which is NOT what her sin is about.
(also, remember, this is supposed to be part TWO of the finale. meaning, this episode (and the introduction of bee's character) directly goes hand-in-hand with the introduction of asmodeus, who's entire club IS about indulgence and depravity and everything you'd expect from the sin of lust. bee and the gluttony party are meant to be a direct foil to the energy of ozzie's.)

That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?
#love how they manipulated people into spreading that post by making it seem like a cishet vs gay thing#when the real message is OP thinks trying to sell your writing is cringe and 'weird' and 'normal people' with jobs would never#which would of course never have flown on the fandom website#so they played into the queer shipping is purer than cishet shipping puriteen thing#and it worked!#because my god people are gullible#this is the direct pipeline that leads to AI thievery#''normal' people write for the joy of it anyway so why do you need pay? you are just greedy and 'weird'!'#'oh no this isn't about who we get to call cringe and who gets to profit from art it's about um...#(quick what's a hated m/f ship?).. oh uh 'shitty' REYLO#and not our super pure uh... (spirk is still popular right? lets throw in that avengers one too to make it seem timely) stucky!'#I'm sorry if I have no sense of humor about this but the year is 2024 and people are still way too ready to sneer#about writers trying to earn a fucking living in the shittiest timeline#and i need you to look deep into yourself and ask you why it's so important to you to tell yourself that only people writing what you like#are 'normal' with real jobs and to vilify everyone else as 'weird' and 'shitty'#for trying to make an income during a financial fucking crisis#i would say sorry for ranting about this but I'm not sorry because wtf#write whatever you want#publish whatever you want#there is no moral fucking purity in what the content is#and one thing certainly doesn't make you more 'weird' or 'normal' than the other#like there is soooo much shitty mlm that started as fanfic???#that post is 100% OP made up some guys to get mad about and called them relyos for the clicks#writing#publishing#writblr#writeblr#i wasn't going to tag this anything but you know what fuck it I'm mad#i had like 5 more tags but tumblr cut me off which is fair 😅#fan fiction

Anybody else get weirdly defensive when people are confused why you have a non-monetized crafting hobby? Like, maybe I want to connect to my ancestry, or create unique gifts for my friends, or challenge myself to learn a skill. Or I want to maintain the thousands of years of tradition passed from teacher to student, and in every movement I am mirroring countless crafters throughout time. With every dropped stitch or tangled spool or crooked seam, I can share the same feeling as the generations that came before me and remember that we are not so different.
Or maybe, I don't know, I just like doing it and I don't need to justify my fucking hobbies.

I’m over here thinking I made a mistake with grad school bc I’m pretty sure I chose the wrong program, my advisor sucks (as confirmed by other grad students ahead of me), idk if I’ll be able to switch advisors, and doing way too much reading today and not being able to be outside

one thing I love about wesper (besides being uhaul gays in both book & show) is that they have a healthy, beautiful relationship with communication & support in times of conflict (perhaps the healthiest in this damn universe) while also being questionable/morally grey people who are literally part of a gang bc often in media queer relationships are either tragic, one of them is toxic OR they're perfect benevolent people with 0 flaws and yeah sure those are required ofc but I like the idea of queer characters getting to be a lil bad, be gay do crime, and deserve a good & happy love life all the same especially since Jesper is bi and I can count on one hand how many bisexual characters got to be in a nice stable relationship peacefully

So... I was rewatching Inside out 2 and obviously there were so many things we can relate to, and so many details that really get down into it, but here's my favorite detail if anyone wants to hear it. And I'm gonna ramble about it so get ready- HERE WE GO
In the first Inside out, we can see that Riley's emotions are basically making her choices, like joy wanting her to be happy all the time and hardly letting the other emotions do anything.
In my opinion, this is like letting your emotions take over your choices and what you're doing instead of thinking it through with your brain (I dunno if that really makes any sense)
Like, you know how some people go by their emotions instead of thinking it through? Like some people let their emotions take over and thinking about it logically is just thrown out the window.
I don't know if that's one of the many things the movie was trying to put out, that's just my thoughts. But it makes sense since she still was just a kid, and kids don't really go by thinking about their situations logically and basically go by what their feeling.
And I'm not saying that having yourself being restricted to feel anything is good idea, obviously we should feel. But we shouldn't go by what we're feeling all the time, we should think things over before our emotions get the best of us.
And then comes Inside out 2! We see a much older Riley, and what I absolutely LOVE is these scenes when Joy says to anxiety (and herself too) that "We don't choose who Riley is."
And when Riley calms down, Riley WANTS to feel Joy. Like, she's older, and she doesn't let her emotions control her ALL the time. That's where her logical thinking comes in. Then Sadness points out saying "Joy, Riley wants you." NOW she brings in what she's feeling.
I LOVE that detail with my heart, like it's saying her emotions don't control her, but they're still a part of her. Like logical thinking mixed in with her emotions.
And yeah! I don't really know if that was something meant to be, it was just something I noticed from both movies. And you made it to the end of my lil ramble!
