HIM's VILLE VALO Is Back With 'Gothica Fennica Vol. 1' EP
March 19, 2020
ind Ville Valo has returned with what appears to be a solo project simply called VV.
Valo has just released a three-song EP called "Gothica Fennica Vol. 1". The effort, which bears a strong musical resemblance to HIM, features the following tracks: "Salute The Sanguine", "Run Away From The Sun" and "Saturnine Saturnalia".
HIM completed a farewell tour in 2017, closing the final chapter on the band's 26-year career.
At the time, Ville explained to Kerrang! magazine why the band decided to call it a day.
"We were tired of the same shit," he said. "When you've done it for a long time, at some point it doesn't taste good anymore. We started working on some stuff, it didn't sound good enough, and we didn't get the teenage buzz you're supposed get."
He also discussed the future of his artistic and musical endeavours.
"I'll be figuring out the emotions I'll be going through after the HIM period is done," he said. "That's how I experience life. I experience it through music, I'll pick up the guitar and start writing and I'm sure some of the emotions that come out of this wild ride will come through. My life is not done yet. The HIM part is done, as it is now, the chapter is closed, but the book is still unfinished…"
Formed in 1991 by Valo, guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström and bassist Mikko "Migé" Paananen, HIM offered the world a new take on the metal genre, which became known as "love metal" (also the title of their fourth album).
HIM in 2015 parted ways with its longtime drummer, Mika Kristian Karppinen (a.k.a. Gas Lipstick), and replaced him with Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger (formerly of HERRA YLPPÖ & IHMISET).
Last year, Valo teamed up with guitar legend Esa Pulliainen to record an album based on songs by the late, legendary Finnish singer Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki. The self-titled album by VILLE VALO & AGENTS was released in February 2019 and was followed by a short tour.

HIM BANG & WHIMPER FAREWELL TOUR - WEEK 1
Finland’s most internationally successful band HIM are bringing their impressive 26 year career to an end on the Bang and Whimper tour. A heartbreaking and bittersweet road for dedicated HIM fans, the band has embarked on a path through 14 countries to bring love metal to their adoring audience one last time. From their beginning in 1991, HIM has gone on to enjoy tremendous success (going as far as to be the first Finnish band to ever reach Gold status in the United States), enamoring music enthusiasts all over the world for many, many years. With eight studio albums and countless exciting concerts, the time to say farewell has unfortunately come.
Father of the famous heartagram symbol and mastermind behind HIM, Ville Valo has enthralled the world with his passionate and metaphorical lyricism, partnered with exceptional musicianship that landed the band a significant spot in the history of rock music. Partnered with long-time HIM band members guitarist Mikko “Linde” Lindström, bassist Mikko “Migé” Paananen, Janne “Burton” Puurtinen, and brand new member Jukka “Kosmo” Kröger, the melodies brought forth by this impressive array of musicians have rooted itself into the deepest chambers of sentimentality. “After quarter of a century of Love and Metal intertwined we sincerely feel HIM has run its unnatural course and adieus must be said in order to make way for sights, scents and sounds yet unexplored. We completed the pattern, solved the puzzle and turned the key. Thank you.” Says frontman Ville Valo.
Senior journalist Anabel DFlux had the immense pleasure of accompanying the first week of the Bang and Whimper tour in the United States. Having photographed these Finnish lads many times over the years, it was certainly a humbling moment to capture the band’s final appearances on camera. The week began at The Van Buren in Pheonix, Arizona, before proceeding to two Los Angeles, California dates at the Wiltern Theater, and finally coming to the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. Joined by 3TEETH and CKY, the opening acts riled up the crowd before the love metal-er’s appearances.
Braving the intense heat in Arizona (quite the juxtaposition to the current snowstorm in their home country), HIM walked on to the stage to a roaring cheer. The set list for the tour runs through the band’s best-known tunes – the hits and the singles – allowing fans to reminisce on their favorite HIM music videos and memories. Although Mige said in the band’s official farewell statement “it shall not be a weepfest but a celebration of love metal in all its lovecraftian glory!”, fans found it hard to contain themselves during the performance and wept through several of their favorite songs. The emotional attachment this band wrought on those privy enough to adore the music is stronger than many anticipate.
The Van Buren Set List:
01. Buried Alive By Love 02. Heartache Every Moment 03. Your Sweet 666 04. The Kiss of Dawn 05. The Sacrament 06. Tears on Tape 07. Wings of a Butterfly 08. Gone with the Sin 09. Soul on Fire 10. Wicked Game 11. Killing Loneliness 12. Poison Girl 13. Bleed Well 14. Heartkiller 15. Join Me 16. It’s All Tears 17. In Joy and Sorrow 18. Right Here in my Arms 19. Funeral of Hearts
Encore: 20. Stigmata Diaboli 21. Pretending 22. When Love and Death Embrace
Encore 2: 23. Rebel Yell
The first night of the Los Angeles shows (a date that was added due to the enormous demand) hosted the band at the Wiltern Theater, one of the most famous theaters in all of Los Angeles for its art deco architecture (designed by Stiles O. Clements of Morgan, Walls & Clements, the city’s oldest architectural firm). It was a grand setting for the act. Night one featured fans lining up from the early hours of the morning to ensure their place at the very front of the stage, as close to the band members as they could possibly manage. The band modified The Funeral of Hearts slightly, as Ville noted on stage that they never seem to know how to begin playing that song. The end of the set list changed slightly from the Arizona date, with the band closing on moodier note with When Love and Death Embrace, rather than ending the evening with their well-known cover of Rebel Yell.
The Wiltern Night One Set List:
01. Buried Alive By Love 02. Heartache Every Moment 03. Your Sweet 666 04. The Kiss of Dawn 05. The Sacrament 06. Tears on Tape 07. Wings of a Butterfly 08. Gone with the Sin 09. Soul on Fire 10. Wicked Game 11. Killing Loneliness 12. Poison Girl 13. Bleed Well 14. Heartkiller 15. Join Me 16. It’s All Tears 17. In Joy and Sorrow 18. Right Here in my Arms 19. Funeral of Hearts
Encore: 20. Pretending 21. Rebel Yell 22. When Love and Death Embrace
The second night of the Wiltern stop had some familiar faces, as fans eagerly jumped on the opportunity to see their favorite band perform twice. The energy was very amped for this performance, as the musicians bellowed out impressive tunes and showcased the years of exquisite talent and skill each and every one possess. New drummer Kosmo played with an especially enthusiastic flare, and keyboardist Burton really got into his instrument. The second night certainly featured a rather unexpected and comical moment, as a fan in the front row pulled the tab on a little confetti popper directly in front of vocalist Ville near the end of one of the songs, who certainly did not see that coming! The reaction left many giggling long after the show had closed.
The Wiltern Night Two Set List:
01. Buried Alive By Love 02. Heartache Every Moment 03. Your Sweet 666 04. The Kiss of Dawn 05. The Sacrament 06. Tears on Tape 07. Wings of a Butterfly 08. Gone with the Sin 09. Soul on Fire 10. Wicked Game 11. Killing Loneliness 12. Poison Girl 13. Bleed Well 14. Heartkiller 15. Join Me 16. It’s All Tears 17. In Joy and Sorrow 18. Right Here in my Arms 19. Funeral of Hearts
Encore: 20. Pretending 21. Rebel Yell 22. When Love and Death Embrace
The band’s final California performance took place at the House of Blues in Anaheim at their new location on Garden Walk. Significantly larger than the previous House of Blues, this venue certainly made room for a slew of fans. Several of the Los Angeles attendees traveled to this third California show as the opportunity was available. The band performed with a great deal of fun at this venue, with Migé and Ville getting into a little dance jive during the solo of a song. Exactly like the previous performances, Linde and Migé partnered up on stage often for the intense guitar parts, which made for some exceptionally awesome facial expressions. The encore of this show changed significantly as a fan managed to pass a sign over to the band on stage, which requested that the band’s ten minute song Sleepwalking Past Hope be played. The front man turned to his accompanying band mates and asked if they should play the song, to which everyone obliged and the melody began. The ending of Sleepwalking graciously merged into the beginning of the band’s cover of Rebel Yell, which closed off the night.
House of Blues Anaheim Set List:
01. Buried Alive By Love 02. Heartache Every Moment 03. Your Sweet 666 04. The Kiss of Dawn 05. The Sacrament 06. Tears on Tape 07. Wings of a Butterfly 08. Gone with the Sin 09. Soul on Fire 10. Wicked Game 11. Killing Loneliness 12. Poison Girl 13. Bleed Well 14. Heartkiller 15. Join Me 16. It’s All Tears 17. In Joy and Sorrow 18. Right Here in my Arms 19. Funeral of Hearts
Encore: 20. Sleepwalking Past Hope 21. Rebel Yell
A band that will be celebrated long after their end, we bid farewell to the gods of Love Metal.

TRANSLATED ROMANIAN INTERVIEW from Info Music 29.07.2015
Ville Valo - "Eternal life - it's boring ... terrible when you can not die"
Ville Valo, HIM frontman told us about the immortality of love, his solo career and the group's plans for the future. For his mysterious way a rock star hiding interesting man with a sense of humor.
Tumblr media
How would you describe yourself in a few lines of your songs?
Ville: (laughs) If I could remember all the songs. I think something from the collection of old songs, maybe "Solitary Man" may be a reflection of my personality.
What's the story song "Wings of a butterfly"?
Ville: Song of the immortal soul, which has butterfly wings and something mythological middle ... I do not know, I wrote it in 2005, many years have passed since then, time was definitely inspiring. In any case, based on the idea of immortality, of which many are hunted. But I'm not interested ... I'm the type of people who want to make it all here and now, and I like things as they are.
But if you were offered the opportunity to choose between eternal life and the ability to read people's minds, what would be your choice?
Ville: I do not think I would be this interesting, even eternal life is boring ... terrible when you can not die. And what about reading the mind ... it scares me. At least I know the people we think only of flaws and I think it would be chaotic to realize what they were thinking. I remember the TV series True Blood , which was a girl which I read thoughts and admit that maybe I would like to do this once.
Most of the things said about death and love. What are they for you?
Ville: Love and Death is only the beginning and the end, we are talking about strong words. In my opinion, all kinds of complicated stories based on these concepts. It's just words that I like to sing.
Do you have a favorite quote about love?
Ville: "Life is short and love is always over in the morning" from the song «Temple of love» (Sisters of Mercy)
How do you imagine the perfect woman?
Ville: I have not thought much about it, the most important thing - to stay with your eyes open and let yourself be surprised. No need to choose the criteria much, let yourself be surprised, because it really is the beauty of life. It would be terrible to say, I like women with hairy armpits (laughs), when there's so much beauty in the world. I can not limit the choices when it comes to the opposite sex, music or even when it comes to movies - should see a lot of movies to be able to say what your favorite genre is.
What do you do when you're not making music?
Ville: I sleep, read, take a bath ... (laughs) I do not think there are moments in which I do not believe or do not do music. Even if I read something, it will certainly inspire me to the end of the day for a song. Ultimately, everything is connected with music.
I know that you have worked with your father in his sex-shop. Have you tried any of the toys in the store?
Ville: There are many, I have tried many, but it would be boring to talk about it, and it's very private. Anyway, I do not want my dad found out what I've tried (laughs)
Continue the phrase "Music - it's ...?"
Ville: something precious, like gold, is something powerful and hot at the same time.
Which artists did you admire as a kid?
Ville: I grew up on the music of Kiss, and then in the '70s and' 80s grew up with Roy Orbison, Duran Duran, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson on TV. AAA and Ozzy Osbourne and higher quality rock.
If you were a character in a movie or book, who would you choose?
Ville: I think that Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver.
Do you remember the concert in Romania?
Ville: I remember that it was behind the scenes, but this concert in Timisoara will be different, and we hope to make a good impression.
How would you react if Romanian asked to marry her?
Ville: It depends on who is a woman. A man is usually the one who has to make an offer (laughs). But inside me there is a bit of Romanian blood, so we'll see.
What can you say about the solo project "Rambo Rimbaud"?
Ville: It's a project that I did not develop. I needed to support the festival in Helsinki, where I sang as Rambo Rimbaud. We needed people to be able to sing some of the things in the acoustic version. Everyone expected to see on the stage Rambo Rimbaud (Qstock). But we found a new drummer for HIM and I was so excited that I said that I would sing along with the band, and I will make a surprise for all. People were a little bit disappointed because they expected to hear Rambo Rimbaud, instead of HIM, we have become accustomed to. At this moment I consider the group HIM, I do not know what will happen to Rambo Rimbaud. I hope to materialize it one day.
Tumblr media
It is true that HIM is preparing a new album in 2016 with the influence of church music? How did you come up with this idea?
Ville: (laughs) Well, we'd like to release something in the next year, but it will take some time ... let's wait a while and train with tours, look for us better. And then begins the rehearsal and work on new ideas. Guppy HIM in the new structure, a new member and I can not say how quickly we will be able to compose new songs. We have to work with what we already have, but it will take some time. It will take time, because this is a serious business. For a long time I was in a group with a specific format, and if you remove the guy from the group it will change the whole chemistry ... So it will take some time ... But we are working, we're working on it ... a strange feeling, but we will wait as long as necessary in order to go through with it.
What is the atmosphere in the group after the departure of Gus?
Ville: He's a great guy, I knew Gas before his participation in the group, a great soul, and he's really a great guy, he's very spiritual, ancient (old soul), so to speak. We all felt bad when he left. A man, who is now, Jukka, very good drummer and a good performer, as he had been, and Gas, but I do not want to find a guy who would be a second Gas. In any case, Gas was not the first drummer, and I knew how to go for it, because we happened in the past to deal with such thing. In any case it's frustrating when you think that everything is getting better and this happens. Really go through such unpleasant, but we did it on the last day, and I can not complain.
You will come to Romania with the same drummer, won't you?
Ville: Jukka will be, but we know it as Kosmo as a cocktail but ...  I told you to let you know, as we call him (call). Currently rehearsing the song with him, there will be nothing that we will practice. We try not to do very much and we are moving on to find each other in the process.
A special thank to Zhenia Kirsikkalove who posted the interview on this fab blog

I GAVE MY HEART AND SOUL FOR HIM AND I AM A TRUE FAN LIKE ALL OF YOU AWESOME PEOPLE: KOSMO
First of all, we truly appreciate that you are willing to talk with us and, speaking on behalf of all members of HIM Mexico City (HIMexicanTeam), we would like to express both admiration for your work and gratitude for the openness and disposition to interact that you have shown to us fans.
– HOLA and thank you very much, it’s always a pleasure! And super thanks for that welcome pic with welcome sign on it! You people are awesome!
So, since the announcement of you joining the band was made, we all started wondering who was Jukka “Kosmo” Kröger, we searched in Google and ended up in the Finnish Wikipedia. Could you share with us a little more? Maybe information that you would like us all to know about you?
Well I am Jukka, people used to call me by the name Kosmo and I am just a regular-down earth-silent boy from town called Pieksämäki in middle of nowhere in this country called Finland and I love music and playing drums and guitar, hehe! :)
I was 12 years old when I started to play for real, i was a bass player first, because of Metallica´s Cliff Burton was just so amazing! But year after that I got my first real drumkit and guitar. I started studying music in schools when I was 20. First year in training college, in city called Savonlinna, then 2 years in Palmgren Conservatory, Pori and 3 years in Conservatory in Jyväskylä where I graduated as pop/jazz musician/drummer.
After these many early bands in the 1993-1998 we founded this band called “FM2000” in 1999. I played in band almost like 11 years and did many albums and live shows and tours. I had to quit with the band because I don’t have so much time that they needed and I didn’t have so much effort to focus on two active live and recording bands at the same time as a drummer.
In 2007 i joyned in Herra Ylppö & Ihmiset, we did 4 full albums and 4 big Finland tours in 2007-2014.
Other “side projects” as drummer are VIHA (2004-), Split Cranium (2010-2015).
As a guitarist i play these bands called Verine (1999-) and Maple Cross (2010 -)
It has not been long since you are HIM’s drummer and we have read that the initial invitation to join the band was made through a text message sent by Ville, how was that moment like?
– It was one morning in March, I woke up at my girlfriend’s place in north of Finland in this town called Oulu. I reached the phone and saw incoming text message at my phone.
(All the credits goes to my former band mates Herra Ylppö and Janne Joutsenniemi who are friends with HIM guys and they kind of praised me to Ville and Burton and the rest of the HIM Family that I’m very interested and available for HIM).
Message says; “Hello, I get your contacts from Ylppö and there is a drummer size hole in our band. Are you interested? -Ville Valo”
My heart jumped and I sat down with biggest smile on my face…I was like HELL YEAH!!!! ;)
Have your plans changed after that call? If so, what are the new ones?
– Yeah they have, in that point I didn’t have any big musical plans, only few small things, I was like taking a little break because we were just finished with our former band called Herra Ylppö & Ihmiset. And now I am the new member and new drummer of this awesome band called HIM. One of my biggest dreams come true! ;)
Some musicians define their lives based on the projects they are in. Having joined HIM, would you say that yours has changed? What is the main difference before and after this event? If there is one, which is the main difference in your life since you joined the band?
– Not really changed, music for me is the life, i can’t think life without it, it’s like air you breath, the obligatory element for been alive.
The band setup between my former band Herra Ylppö & Ihmiset and HIM are exactly the same, lead vocalist, one guitarist, keyboard, bass and drums.
But like professional way everything is couple of levels way higher and we got this possibility to make living out of it and that is one of my biggest dream come true!
Everybody should follow your heart and own dreams and make them come true in this very own, one-off thing called life. :)
How did you feel in your first gig with the band?
– First gig was the secret one in Qstock Festival, Oulu in the end of July. And it were very precious thing for me personally that the first gig were in my second home town in Oulu.
It was very exciting with all the hiding and secrecy. It were kind of easy way to start for me and the band because the audience were expected to see Rambo Rimbaud show but well well well it turns to be HIM show. It was a kind of small tent and it was just packed full of screaming people. We performed a short set and it went very fast but everything went just awesome! It was a blast!
Are you enjoying this tour?
– Yeah i’m enjoying every part of my body and soul! All the shows have gone great and the fans..uuuuh..you are just awesome!! Thank you all! Gas posted greetings in facebook : “You will “inherit” the best fans in the Universe. Enjoy brother!”, which was so kind and awesome thing from him, he is so kind person and has biggest heart in the universe!! And Hell Yeah, he knew that all about the HIM fans! Respect you, mi amigo! ;)
In your opinion, which one was the defining factor that made you the “chosen one”? In other words, which aspect of your personality would you say that goes along with HIM better?
– It’s kind of hard for me to explain this, you have to ask this from the other guys, haha! :)
But maybe i am this regular, smiling, positive, northern boy who has his feet on the ground and gets along with everybody and maybe i can play drums on some tolerable level. ;)
Considering your musical career, we dare to say that you’ve got a heavier style, was HIM part of your musical taste before you became their drummer?
– Yeah I got heavy metal background, but also the weird jazzy stuff. ;)
Yes, I have known the band from the first EP, and they are popped up for me every now and then and i’ve always liked HIM very much and their style and knew the hit songs but never gone to that deeper until now… And now I gave my heart and soul for HIM and I am a true fan like all of you awesome people!
We have witnessed that your integration with fans has been totally natural and warm, so tell us, how has been like to join this internationally well-known band whose members have known each other for so long?
– Thank you for your kind words! It is always a pleasure! I am a fan also and I know how does it feel to meet your idol, if we or I can do that kind of thing to somebody, it is least that we or I can do and it is always a pleasure and very important thing.
It’s odd situation because Gas was in the band like 16 years and the all guys knew each others when they were just a little boys in Helsinki.
But everything went well! It was amazing how all the chemistry and things clicked so naturally. like i were playing in the band all the time. It was just amazing! All the HIM guys and family have been so nice and kind to me and the fans are so awesome! I knew there were lots of dedicated HIM fans all around the world but never thought it would be THISSSSS HUGEEEEE! Love you all!
Which HIM song is the one that you feel more pleased about when playing?
– Hmmm.. only one song...That will be Sleepwalking Past Hope. That is some awesome piece of work, legendary song from legendary album.
Now, about your musical taste, what is your favorite band or the last band that has conquered your heart? Do you have any guilty pleasures?
– There’s many. I listen to all kinds of music from evergreen jazz to norwegian black metal but the heavier ones and underground stuff are close to my heart.
The last ones that has blown my mind are Gojira and Wardruna. Guilty pleasures…hhmmm… Laila Kinnunen. ;)
We are absolutely excited about HIM’s next gig in Mexico City, have you been in this part of the world before? What are your expectations regarding your participation in the Knot Fest?

SOUNDI TRANSLATED ARTICLE by Timo Isoaho -26/07/2015:
HIM introduced the latest members in a surprise gig - what said the new drummer?
HIM surprised the Oulu festival Qstock sellout crowd Saturday night at 22. Tent Stage, the stage had been informed of Ville Valo's solo gig (under the name Rambo Rimbaud), but instead there were five males from HIM - there was also the orchestra's new drummer Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger.
Kröger has previously contributed, inter alia, to FM2000 and Herra Ylppö & Ihmisetin. It does not "appear", therefore, been hampered by Herra Ylppö & Ihmiset memory enthuses Kröger skills HIM skipper of Ville Valo previous drummer Mika "Gas" Karppinen, who left earlier this year.
Soundi asked tastefully HIM member Kröger his feelings before and after the surprise gig.
Before: How does it feel? "Well ... Shit are undeniably in my pants" (laughs) After: How does it feel? "Shit are probably still in my pants, but just like the gig undeniably belonged" (laughs)
Quite well, yeah ... Asking after the song live set, Soundi believes one hundred percent that HIM future is not (at all) in emergency days. (Pehmeäkätisen- safely, peacefully- literally " soft handed "), but Kröger is so groovy that such HIM veterans (Ville, bassist Mikko "Mige" Paananen, guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström and keyboardist Janne "Burton" Puurtinen) can look to the future with confidence.
HIM now are activated anyway, they have a tour in Russia, Continental Europe and in Finland in August. The tour dates can be found here .
Otherwise, there might be the case that Soundi is about to add to this comfortable news ... So take a look!
