I have spent so many fucking hours on the third chapter of nighttime in Las Vegas, but I am nowhere close to done.

Every time I read my draft I have this sinking feeling that my readers will be disappointed. They might wish that I’d taken the story a different way, or wish I didn’t make the pacing of the dialogue so goddamn slow, or that the characters are being written too bluntly and without the nuance they deserve.

I look at my draft every day, and so many times I simply get nowhere. Perfectionism is getting to me— especially because this work is so much better than my other ones— and I just want it to be as good to my readers as it is to me.

Maybe this is a cue to stop taking this so seriously. It’s fanfiction, after all, for a rare ship in an already small fandom. I’m hyping myself up for an audience of what, fifty? A hundred at the max? It seems pretty ridiculous when compared to the massive audiences in other fandoms. I’m not a great writer. I could never be as good as hotlegfryegg or junebloom or shimadagenji, and I won’t get there by haggling over one paragraph for three hours.

I just need to sit down and write. I must let go of this impossible standard I’ve dreamt up for myself, or I will never progress.

Besides, if my readers don’t like it… they can go write their own fanfiction.
