hey man, i've been wondering about les paul style pickups i can get to install in my guitar to replicate jonny's smile tone. any ideas that are relatively cheap?

alternatively, how would getting p90s be in comparison to that?

The Gibson Humbucker is probably the most popular and most replicated pickup of all time. Officially, there was just one model from its introduction in 1957 until the 1990s. But Gibson made some tweaks over the decades. Jonny’s Les Paul looks to be from 1977-1978, so it probably has what are known as “T Top” humbuckers.

Compared to the average late-50s “PAF” pickup, the 70s "T Top" is said to have a slightly more aggressive sound. That said, the difference isn’t dramatic. A T Top still has the warm, rich sound that we associate with a vintage PAF. It’s not like a 70s hot-rodded humbucker, let alone a modern rails humbucker. And it's worth remembering that 50s PAF pickups could themselves vary noticeably in sound due to inconsistent winding.

Jimmy Page’s circa-1959 Les Paul originally had PAF pickups, but, when the bridge pickup malfunctioned on tour in Australia in 1972, he replaced the 50s PAF with a 70s T Top. Page kept the T Top in the guitar for the rest of Led Zeppelin’s career. That should suggest how slight the differences are between the versions.

So if you’re really picky, you could track down a T Top replica or reissue. There are plenty available at nearly every price point. If you’re less picky, grab one of the countless PAF replicas and reissues. If you're on a budget, perhaps consider the the Seymour Duncan '59 (a PAF replica): it's extremely popular, and thus pretty cheap on the used market.

Unless you've got the exact same amplifier as Jonny with a mic in the exact same position on the grill, then I wouldn't worry too much about the subtle differences between various vintage Gibson humbuckers.

For a comparison of P90s and Humbuckers, I’d recommend searching other sites and forums, it’s an extremely well-trodden topic.

This was from a brief period of a few shows when the pickup selector was taped in the bridge position — presumably the neck pickup had some issue. Jonny can't stick picks into the pickguard of the Les Paul (as he does with his Tele), so he has a Dunlop 5005 pick holder velcro'd to the guitar.

Updates to Jonny's Guitars

We've finally updated Jonny's page with info on his latest guitars, including some that we haven't mentioned on the blog yet. First up is the ES-125T used live with The Smile for Colors Fly. Next is the Gibson Les Paul Custom, which he's often used to play Bending Hectic so he won't need to re-tune his natural Les Paul to the song's EADGG#D# tuning. It's likely the same LP Custom that he played for a Junun show in 2015. There's a few Fenders too: the natural Telecaster with a Strat headstock seen on stands behind him during The Smile rehearsals, a blue Mustang used for a couple of songs with Dudu Tassa in 2021, and the 1951 Fender Nocaster that Jonny borrowed from Tassa for Jarak Qaribak performances.

In addition, we've added a little bit of clarification about pickup wiring to the articles on his Tele Plus instruments. And we've noted the replacement "tone" knob recently added to his natural Les Paul.

Last, we've started to add links to the table of contents, so it's easier to navigate to the entry for the instrument you're looking for.

<Wall of Eyes> The Smile

더 스마일에 대해 말할 때 무엇부터 이야기하는 것이 좋을까. 3인조로 구성된 밴드 멤버 가운데 두 사람이 라디오헤드 출신이라는 사실부터? 라디오헤드는 정규 3집 OK Computer까지만 해도 모던 록과 얼터너티브 계열 그룹으로 여겨졌지만 2000년 새 밀레니엄을 맞아 발표된 Kid A부터 완전히 독보적인 길을 걷기 시작했다. 바꿔 말하면 아티스트 록밴드 라디오헤드로서의 길을 개척해나간 것이다. Kid A에 담긴 급격한 음악적 변화는 기존 팬들이 가지고 있던 기대에 잘 부응하지 않으며 결국 그들로부터 멀어지는 결과를 초래하기도 했지만, 지금 되돌아보면 밴드의 실험 정신이 남긴 유산은 아마도 비틀즈가 대중음악사에 미친 것만큼 영향력 있을 거라고 생각된다. 

1집 A Light for Attracting Attention이 나왔을 때만 해도 더 스마일은 톰 요크나 조니 그린우드의 사이드 프로젝트 정도로만 여겨졌다. 톰 스키너(Tom Skinner)라는 드러머를 재즈신으로부터 영입했지만 더 스마일은 톰 요크가 자신의 솔로 작업에 임하고 조니 그린우드가 영화 음악에 임하는 것과 크게 다르지 않은 또 다른 프로젝트 같은 인상이 강했다–그 말은, 라디오헤드가 일군 업적 같은 것이 그다지 기대되지 않았다는 이야기다. 그런데 이번 2집을 본 뒤로 그런 생각이 조금씩 희미해지기 시작했다. 1집에 비해 2집은 더욱 정돈되고 그룹의 정체성을 더욱 굳건히 하는 느낌을 준다. 톰 요크의 팔세토 보컬과 현악 오케스트라와 사운드 조각들이 부드럽게 어울리면서 전반적으로 멜로우한 인상을 남긴다. 어둡고 비관적인 분위기는 여전하지만 음악을 듣는 일은 한결 편안해진 것이 분명하다. 더 스마일의 1집과 2집에서 레코드의 프로듀서가 바뀌었는데 아마 그런 영향도 있을 것이다. 이 앨범은 라디오헤드의 오랜 벗 나이젤 고드리치(Nigel Godrich)가 아니라 A Moon Shaped Pool에서 엔지니어로 참여했던 샘 페츠 데이비스(Sam-Petts Davies)가 주축이 되어 프로듀싱과 믹싱을 맡았다. 샘 페츠 데이비스는 과거 라디오헤드의 앨범들과 톰 요크가 루카 구아다니노(Luca Guadagnino) 감독의 영화 음악 서스페리아(Suspiria)를 진행할 때 프로듀싱을 맡았고, 조니 그린우드가 참여한 영화 음악 주눈(Junun)에서 엔지니어로 함께 해온 이력이 있다.

더 스마일의 1집 수록곡은 13곡인데 반해 2집은 8곡으로 곡 수가 적어 과감한 비워내기가 적용된 것이 아닐까 유추하게 된다. 노래 가사만 봐도 그런 느낌이 많이 든다. 흔한 라임을 살리는 일도 없이 시크하고 시니컬하게 상황에 대한 단편적 서술을 이어갈 뿐 감정에 기대는 측면도 잘 보이지 않는다. 어쿠스틱 기타와 싱커페이션이 가미되어 독특한 리듬감을 만들어내는 첫 번째 트랙 Wall of Eyes에서는 의도적으로 맥락을 끊어놓은 것처럼 파편적인 이야기를 쌓아가며 수수께끼 같은 악몽의 실타래를 표현하는 것에 주력한 느낌이다. 

Wall of Eyes 뮤직비디오는 폴 토마스 앤더슨 감독이 연출했다. 뮤직비디오 속 장면들��는 노래를 이해할 수 있는 단서들이 주어지고 있는 것 같다. 주인공은 텔레비전을 통해 안구의 운동을 시청하는데 거기에서 ‘당신은 눈들의 벽을 넘어가게 될 거야 / 당신이 소유한 장치에서 (you’ll go behind a wall of eyes / of your own device)’가 실현된다. 그는 도시를 배회하고 술집에 들어가고, 여러 명의 자신들이 일렬로 앉은 바에서 자기 증식에 마지막 순번으로 동참한다. 웃거나 우는 여러 감정과 멍한 얼굴, 때론 언성을 높이고 때론 평화롭지만 때론 복잡한 수많은 서로 다른 나의 모습들과 나란히 앉는다. ‘기차는 거기에 가지 않아(The trains don’t go there)’라는 메시지처럼 매번 잘못 도착한 듯 어떤 것도 순조롭게 연결되지 않는 흑백의 장면들을 이어붙였다.

어린이들이 모인 강당에서 라이브 공연을 펼치는 뮤직비디오 Friend of a Friend는 그야말로 허를 찌르는 상상력을 채택하고 있다. 엉뚱하게도 각양각색의 표정과 태도로 밴드의 라이브를 관람하는 아이들의 모습을 보여준다–Wall of Eyes의 눈들이 수십 명의 톰 요크 자신의 것을 의미한다면 여기에서는 여러 명의 아이들의 눈으로 눈을 가진 주체를 이동시킨 것으로 이해해 본다. 이 곡은 베이스와 피아노의 음색이 자연스러워 특히 인상적이었는데, Balconies–발코니는 코로나 락다운 시기 이탈리아에서 각자의 발코니에 나와 희망의 노래를 부르던 장면에 영감을 얻은 부분이라 한다–와 Friend라는 단어가 주는 느낌과 함께 전반적으로 포지티브한 분위기로 흘러가는 곡으로 생각되었다–아이들 앞에서 라이브 공연을 해도 좋다고 판단될 만큼? 마침내 더 스마일이라는 밴드명에 걸맞은 스마일리한 트랙을 만든 걸까? 하지만 이 곡이 아이들이나 우리에게 남기는 교훈이 있다면, 그것은 결코 달콤하지 않으며 뼈아프게 현실적이고 아이러니하게 유머러스하다. 화자는 ‘그 모든 돈이 어디로 갔는가?(All of that money, where did it go?)’하는 질문에 이르고, ‘누군가의 주머니 속으로? / 내 친구의 친구(In somebody’s pocket? / A friend of a friend)’라는 답에 도달한다. 돈을 벌면 그것은 금세 다른 곳으로 이동한다. 그만큼 순식간에 번 돈이 사라진다는 의미다. 내가 지불한 돈은 돌고 돌아 내 친구의 친구인 누군가에게로 흘러가게 될지도 모른다. 알고 보면 모르는 사람도 ‘친구의 친구’일 수 있는 사람들 사이의 상호 연결성이 암시되고 있는 것 같기도 하다.

Bending Hectic은 포스트록 같은 분위기로 8분이 넘는 에픽의 서막을 연다. 느슨하게 진행되지만 6분 정도가 흐르면 내부의 와일드함을 드러내는 크레셴도에 이른다. 긴 루프 트랙을 듣는 듯 느슨하고 나직한 톤을 가졌지만 가사는 과거에 톰 요크가 자동차 사고를 당했던 경험을 묘사하며 혼돈과 아픔을 그려낸다.

앨범의 커버 아트웍? 그건 더 말할 것 없이 훌륭하다. 왜냐하면 이것 하나만으로도 턴테이블 위에 멋진 작품 한 점을 올려놓은 듯한 심미적 효과를 자아내기 때문이다. 미술 작품을 보고 감상할 때처럼 우리는 잘 풀리지 않는 Wall of Eyes를 계속해서 곱씹어 보아야 할 것이다. 벽은 우리가 넘어야 할 산을 의미하겠지만 왜 눈의 벽인지에 대해서는 더 생각해 보는 편이 좋을 것이다. 눈의 위치부터 눈의 기능, 눈의 속성까지. 눈의 상징적 의미가 무엇인지에 대해서도. 평소에 우리는 신체의 특정 부위 하나하나에 대해 그다지 의식하지 않고 살아가는데 그걸 의식하게 된다면 그때는 특정 부위가 아플 때일 가능성이 높다. 그런 것처럼 화자에게 눈은 고통의 상징이었을 수도 있다. 더 스마일의 Wall of Eyes는 라디오헤드의 명성에 뒤지지 않는 음악적 품격을 새롭고 획기적인 방법으로 연결해나가는 과정을 보여주고 있다.
