Bit o’ a cheeky bonus to the WoLCred week thingy and also a tribute to @kirame90​ ‘s SniperSpy comic series. Y’all should check it out, especially if you’re into TF2 and, most importantly, a fellow SniperSpy shipper like me.

I encountered that SniperSpy comic, like, 2 or 3 months ago as it’s coming closer to conclusion. Word cannot describe how I feel about the comic series, but it made me laugh and cry and feel all sorts of feelings. I admire how the story told, how the couple having to deal with their blooming relationship, the comedy that is the other mercs, Sniper’s parents, the exploration of Spy’s past and how it affects him till present day. Highly recommend you to read it. Be warned that it’s a long read, but I promise it’s worth the journey. You can start reading it from page one over here :3c

As for the glam itself, finding Spy’s tuxedo wasn’t hard as there’s a couple of good tux top in FFXIV and I managed to work out his corsage with a yellow hyacinth corsage for the yellow leaves and a purple carnation earring for the small flower. Alas, you can’t layer headgears so no baclava/ninja mask. As for Sniper’s, while I managed to find a good fit, it’s sadly missing the tie. On the other hand, I like the bracelet (iirc it’s a StormBlood dungeon drop) as his wristwatch.

Overall, I’m really proud of this getup. Might post it to Eorzea Collection if I feel like it uwub

So there was a Callowmoore question on 4SD which has got people talking and since nobody will ask me about it I'm gonna get it out of my brain anyway.

For someone on 4SD as frequently as Taliesin, Callowmoore questions are rare and I think that partly comes from us fans not wanting to try and steer him but also because his answers tend to be complicated. He's quite plain with other stuff, but a lot also gets offered into interpretation when it comes to Ashton and Fearne.

And granted, we Callowmoores would love for him to pull a Liam and just up and say Ashton has feelings for her, but I think we all know that's not Tal's way; aside from the nuggets of wisdom, killer one-liners and unique homebrews, we tend to love Tal's characters for their actions and expressions, some of which subtle and rewarding to those paying attention. For this reason I have had to mull over this one minute answer for most of my day and figure out what I think he means by it, like blue curtains in a book.

To note though, 'I think' is the operative term, but I also don't believe that Tal has left Callowmoore better or worse by his response.

One of the interesting things I want to point out is that my interpretations are observing the divide between Taliesin's words and his roleplaying; it is not to say that Tal is being dishonest in his answers, but I also see it as the answers are what Ashton thinks and his roleplay is how they feel.

So no, Ashton isn't 'precious' about Fearne wandering off when sleeping beside each other, if she said no or came back safely it wouldn't have bothered them, and it's fair for Ashton to have preferred Fearne to have woke them up. And yet that doesn't deny the reaction Ashton had waking up to find her gone and fearing that she's in danger, and not there to help her; the panic, the anger, the impatience are all clear and instinctive reactions Ashton is having that imply that her being with them is important. They're not precious about Fearne waking up and leaving the bed before they wake, and yet they'll still smile upon waking and finding that she's still there.

The 'Adventurers with Benefits' is one of two comments I can see being used maliciously against shippers, but it's worth reminding that on the last Callowmoore question Tal was asked, he mentioned that Ashton doesn't believe that someone would love them. Ashton feels unlovable, and yet they still ask for intimacy with Fearne, leaning further into their connection but also not pressuring her into commitment. It's also worth pointing out that this is still a slow burn, even Jester questioned whether her feelings for Fjord were legitimate or a romanticized fantasy at one point, and Ashton is not privy to Fearne's feelings for them. Ashton frames it as Adventurers with Benefits because they don't allow themselves to entertain the idea of Fearne reciprocating feelings for them, and yet their impulse to kiss her before absorbing the shard, to frequently engage in physical contact at a growing rate, to playfully steal and share each other's clothing, the desire to defend her from harm or anyone that might have ulterior motives, and to willingly do anything and everything just for her to smile in their direction again, that paints more of a picture than just benefits.

Which finally gets us to Ashton's theory of love. Tal mentions that Ashton believes that love is 'wanting to trust somebody, but not trusting them'. Immediately: No, haters, I don't think this means Ashton doesn't trust Fearne, nor do I think it means that Ashton trusts Fearne so they don't love her. Ashton trusts all the Hells (well, maybe not Braius since they just met), but Fearne is special to them in a different way, they've already platonically said that they loved her when they first were using their titan forms. In addition, this could be an elaboration of the last time Tal brought up Ashton's opinion of Love on the post-shard Callowmoore question: 'love is ignorance and adorableness'. This is another thing that can develop, elaborate and/or change over time, but at the current moment Ashton's interpretation of love can come from environment; Imogen wants to trust Laudna but can't wholly trust her given Delilah, but even Ashton can see that they love each other. Tal also mentioned that Ashton is not very experienced in relationships - which kinda plays into my belief that Ashton and Fearne, while have had relationships, haven't had deep romantic feelings or proper intimacy before, which makes them discovering it with each other more special - so their understanding of love can only exist on what they assume it's like.

And yet what if you reworded the phrase in the same spirit? 'Love is trusting someone wholeheartedly even with nothing to reassure it', there have been many a time something looked to go south and faith was put in another anyway; the shard may be a bad example because it did go wrong but even though the red flags were there Ashton upon completing the process said 'thank you for trusting me', when Fearne took the shard Ashton was a bag full of panic their experience meant they couldn't trust that the shard wouldn't be just as bad for Fearne, and yet they still wanted to trust that Fearne would succeed. Ashton couldn't trust that whenever Fearne was wild shaped, cornered by Otohan, or taken away by Ira on Ruidus that she'd come back safe, and yet still wanted to trust that she would, Ashton couldn't confirm that Fearne wasn't a Doppelganger in Nanna Mori's trust trial - even when FCG and Imogen suspected it was her - and yet they still wanted to trust that it was her. Ashton's view on love may not be entirely right but it's not entirely wrong either, what is blind faith if not ignorant and adorable? Even with their interpretation, Ashton has put plenty of faith in Fearne even when the risk was high.

In conclusion, Ashton's behaviour towards Fearne do often imply a complexity rather than a discrepancy to Tal's 4SD statements, that maybe Ashton's emotions and subconscious are not in sync with their self-doubt driven thoughts, perhaps it is the way Ashton tempers their feelings to try and not get hurt by them or cause Fearne to get hurt by them again. Ashton's apology to her post-shard made a point of noting how she means a lot to them, and how hurting her was one of the worst things they have done, and as they work towards self-improvement and self-discovery, there will likely be a point where self-realisation comes into play too, and they can understand why what they're thinking differs to how they're feeling.

Again, this is all interpretation, speculation and observation, one that like the core statements doesn't add or subtract but fills in some gaps either way. Ashton's feelings are a complicated matter, which is likely why Tal entices and creates such speculation with a complicated answer. Right now Ashton clearly does care for Fearne and share a special relationship that's regrowing after suffering tension, loss and fear, blooming back into trust, joy and comfort, but save 5 Disney Greek Muses backing him up in a Gospel song they're not just gonna out and say they're in love

Oh look, time to defeat the raid boss of BNHA: IzuOcha. (I wrote this meta in March, and after reading it now, I didn't feel I needed to change anything, but I added a small bonus section at the end. Hope you enjoy!)

I have a lot of things to say about why Ochaco was never meant to be the one... but I'll try to stay concise and on topic with regards to this meta. Ochaco appears set up as Izuku's love interest from the get-go, but is that really what Hori wanted to do? I'll be taking a dive into their themes and in part three of this meta, I'll be explaining why the answer to that question has been a resounding: NO!

When I compared the feedback Ochaco got from Aoyama, Toga and Mina about her having a crush on Izuku for wanting to be like him, to Izuku, who didn’t get any feedback for all the times he did the exact same thing and copied Kacchan, it felt very unfair.

See what I mean? It is completely unfair. And this was such a hard topic for me to navigate and answer for the anon at that time. But then I did some thinking.

Compress, Gentle/La Brava, Kamijirou and finally Kirimina (which came as a pleasant surprise, and for me, cemented Hori's intentions with all of this)... all of these characters have been written to highlight various things about BkDk's relationship.

Then, there is Ochaco's admiration of Izuku and she always gets told it's a crush, and it's so weird of a plot to begin with. This very one-sided "crush" also felt out of place with the rest of the themes going on. I eventually realised maybe we had been looking too closely at the admiration issue all along. By attempting to explain the meaning of the tree and why it's different from this other tree, we didn't see the forest it's connected to and that there was actually something bigger going on that Hori had been crafting.

Scale it back and you’ll see: It’s not that Izuku didn’t get his own feedback about his feelings for Kacchan in the various ways he shows he wanted to be like him, but Ochaco’s conversations with Aoyama and Mina and Toga were his feedback!! It was one of the biggest AHHHHHHHHHHH SO THAT'S WHY pin drop moments I've ever had.

No one was calling him out, because they didn't need to! Calling out Ochaco for that behaviour was all Izuku's same behaviour needed!

Chapter 15 is the first time Izuku displays this behaviour of wanting to be like Kacchan. In Chapter 48 Izuku trains his movement after thinking of "Kacchan and the others". His movement mimicking Katsuki's is first noticed by Iida in Chapter 52.

We spent so much time worrying what the difference is between Izuku and Ochaco’s admiration, but we tackled the problem all wrong! In fact, we didn’t need to tackle it at all.

Because not only did Ochaco’s crush sideplot serve as a red herring to veil the real love story going on from the average reader, it was also used as another tool to highlight it.

In chapter 58, Izuku showed off his new movement style and everybody, even Katsuki, noticed it was copying the way Katsuki moves. The fact we get another Ochaco shot of her watching Izuku mimic Katsuki really does add credence to the theory that she noticed Izuku's feelings because he's also copying the person he loves. And if their logic was true for her, then why couldn't it be true for Izuku too? Izuku's mimicry being such a non-issue for 1-A was surely done on purpose for us to see this hypocrisy one day: That her mimicry gets called out as love by everyone, but everyone sleeps on Izuku's own mimicry simply because it's between two boys.

Our take away was never meant to be “what’s the difference between their admiration/love”, but simply that Izuku was both wanting to become like and inadvertently becomes like Kacchan because he loves him so much and a way to keep Kacchan close to him was incorporating both his attitude and movement style into his own.

Hori was linking the two concepts of mimicry and romance together with commentary from Mina/Aoyama/Toga while having Izuku do this EXACT THING they were talking about, with Katsuki, right in front of our damn salad!

Because what other characters noted about Ochaco's behaviour... Izuku was also expressing towards Kacchan. (Hori even brought it up again in DvK2 just to remind *everyone* that Izuku is very conscious of doing the exact same thing as Ochaco)

Even if Ochaco later reveals their logic to not be true FOR HER (which I wholeheartedly believe in. BkDk+TogaChaco end game LETS GO), we know for sure this logic has absolutely been true for Izuku. And the feedback Ochaco got also fits Hori’s framework of;

Bkdk -> are the actions

Other characters -> are the words for their feelings and actions.

Ochaco never was a raid boss to begin with... she only had the appearance of one. All to get BkDK through to the finish line.

Ochaco talking about "putting the All Might doll away" here used the same verb as "shutting her feelings away" and her scene instantly jumps to Izuku looking at his black whip - a quirk he has also "put away" behind a locked door that represents OFA. Black whip is a quirk which emerged from the feelings he has for Katsuki, that Izuku has also had to "put away" because what happened to him was so traumatic. I think Hori wanted us to see their two stories of "locking something away" were actually the same in essence, and it wasn't just black whip itself that Izuku had to lock away, but also his feelings for Katsuki... because we lost Izuku's POV towards Katsuki after the "I'm too blessed." scene. Most likely to hide the romantic love Izuku feels towards him from the reader.

I realised the same logic of the other couples also applied to Ochaco too a few months ago, while I was putting together this meta about all the ways Hori has indirectly shown readers what Izuku’s feelings for Kacchan are. Hori couldn’t say it outright because of his demographic and the current expectations society has that BL should stay in it's own category and far removed from shounen.

So Hori gave bkdk their moments without a whole lot of context and developed the idea of them simultaneously in another language, by getting other various characters to do the talking. And he used these characters to indirectly spell out bkdk’s love story in conjunction with bkdk’s own behaviour, all for the sake of his big bkdk reveal in the series' finale.

And to think he’s been doing this almost since the beginning blows my mind. (Chapter 15! Chapter 15 was the start of WWKD: What Would Kacchan Do) The man is a genius. A lot of this feels like he had needed to release his feelings about bkdk, so he left these trails of code throughout the manga... and we’ve finally cracked the damn thing.

We did it. We realised Hori’s 2nd language and roundabout method of telling one of the greatest love stories in shounen history. And I’m sure there’s even more examples of it to discover, that all our fandom's talented, keen-eyed bkdks find every day.

If Horikoshi Kohei-Sensei wrote this story because he wanted to cement his mark in jump history, he has deservedly done just that!

Part B - The real ship of dreams

(It felt too good to be true, yet I was quietly hoping...) .•° ✿ 5. TogaChako ೋღ

Circling back to the first part of this meta, "The Shape of an Eternal Bond" ... Do you remember when I talked about how BkDk couldn't imagine a world without each other, and the sense of an eternity they both exude together? Something that has always been, something that will always be. It seems more themes and feelings we get from bkdk's relationship have now been thrown into the Togachaco fight.

Ochaco gave Toga what is essentially a marriage proposal to a vampire, and then her wires made the shape of the infinity symbol. Toga expresses to her "I can't stand the thought of you not being in this world anymore." This is 1. so touching 2. bkdk as HELL, and I am certain that Katsuki and Izuku will confess their desires to be together forever before this manga ends.

I mean, this just goes to show you how us bkdks and Hori are literally on the same neural link, and we've been right about his methods of storytelling and how he's leaving trails of love inside these other couples to express concepts that are present in bkdk's own (soon to be) very romantic relationship.

It's a fun thought exercise to look at Togachaco's fight and predict what certain themes of theirs Hori will install into bkdk's talk/feelings they will express to each other... but there is a certain one, other than "forever", I feel very strongly about and will focus on here...

And that is Izuku's smile.

Something Katsuki once detested became the thing he most advocated for and longed to protect. His thumbs pointing to himself while talking about smiles... no wonder this had an air of Katsuki, himself, being the biggest reason Izuku smiles. "How could you leave me and choose this for us - a life of no smiling like that?"

At the start of the series, Katsuki couldn't stand Izuku's face or the smile he made at him. Whenever he saw it, he could only think of it as somebody laughing at him, looking down on him... but then DvK2 reframed Izuku's wide smiles at him and turned them into something pure, and genuine, and I think that's when Katsuki started to realise how much he was being loved the whole time.

And how could Katsuki possibly not reciprocate those earnest feelings from his special person who helped him find his heroic heart?

And this seems to be something Ochaco has noticed about Izuku? Ochaco, somebody who loves when people smile, noticed how big Izuku smiles when he talks about heroes... but especially the besotted faces he makes whenever he's with Katsuki... Of course she did.

On the Weekly Shounen Jump cover that featured bnha chapter 394, most of the characters on it are happy and smiling. Izuku isn't, however. That's because he's lost the ability to smile because Katsuki is still dead in the manga... Hori used this jump issue to build on this theme in the manga - that if you take Katsuki away, then away goes Izuku's smile, too.

Because Katsuki's very existence gives Izuku his happiness.

These two panels were supposed to be compared to each other - "Blood" and "Smiles" are two concepts mirroring each other in Togachaco's story. It's their different love languages. Toga felt like she couldn't ask Saito-kun for blood because he'd never accept her, Ochaco felt like she couldn't ask Izuku for his smile... because he'd also never accept her... she knew this was because Izuku already had somebody who gave him his sweetest smile... the same person who knew him more than anyone.

Chapter 395's title, 'shiawase no ue ni' was an interesting one that feels nuanced with Ochaco's feelings towards Izuku. It can be read as "Above (my) happiness..." I think this title is describing the concept of prioritising something else BEFORE one's own happiness. It's the perfect concept title for self-sacrifice, like Toga putting Ochaco's life above her own, but could ALSO be referencing Ochaco placing Izuku's happiness with Katsuki before her own feelings for him!!

Ochaco's story, at present, appears to be about putting aside unrequited love for a person she didn't quite understand, and instead placing her efforts into an attainable goal - rescuing somebody's heart from despair, and in doing so, becoming each other's important person. And then neither have to journey through life alone anymore. Ochaco knew this is something Izuku and Katsuki found in each other. In the image above, the girls are looking at Izuku and Saito, who won't turn their way, because they are both looking at a blonde boy next to them. Their "Sometimes Saturday." Katsuki.

The hidden face as Ochaco says she "came to like" Izuku Midoriya is quite suspicious. It belies what she's saying and she seems to either be hiding something negative or she’s not being truly forthcoming about her situation and feelings for Izuku. There are also themes of envy that finally showed up in Togachaco's dialogue which may be foundation Hori has laid down for the reveal of Ochaco's feelings later, as well. Envy about the attention Izuku received from others as a hero. Envy towards Izuku's innate passion for heroes, and the adoring faces he makes for Katsuki, perhaps.

So this smile that Katsuki has always misunderstood as something negative aimed towards him ended up turning into something... very lovely and important to him, as shown in Izuku's panel and how Ochaco described Toga's smile right afterwards.

And honestly... if we get little snapshots of the many smiles Izuku has made for Katsuki, while Katsuki is thinking about how adorable Izuku looks just for him when they're talking, I don't think I'll make it out of this bkdk reveal alive. Hori is going to obliterate us with whatever he's got cooking for them.

hang on have I not mentioned this enough- Hi! Yes! Vincent is Catalan, from Barcelona! I usually talk about them as being/using Spanish but that's honestly just because I know that's what most people would recognise/understand, compared to how relatively niche Catalan is unfortunately. A lot of the time it's more important in the moment to connect somewhat even if it's not entirely accurate "^^ (and they do use Spanish, it's just their second language instead).

Being Catalan specifically is a key part of Vin as a character because, well... I'm projecting, honestly! I live in Barcelona! I may be British, but I've lived here for most of my life now and it's an equally important part of me as a person. Writing about Vin is an excuse to write about the experience of immigrating (though admittedly in reverse of my own) as well as Catalan language, culture, politics, history...

One day I'll sit down and write out some of this stuff and approximately nobody will know the cultural/historical context <3

🕊️ Fernweh: Davor lived a happy life there and didn't think about leaving in the future. Maybe for some trips, but he knew it would always be his place, his safe place... 'It was a mistake to come back here.' - that was his first thought when he tried to fall asleep on the first night in Fernweh. The nightmares came back as he thought they would. He wants to leave as soon as possible because he feels that it is not safe for Becca to be here.

🕊️ Gramps Dan: That was his gramps who taught Davor how to play the guitar. As a young child, Davor always admired him and believed he was the most intelligent person in the world. After the death of his parents and how his grandfather treated him, he was devastated and angry. He wanted answers soo badly but didn't get any. He lived loathing his grandfather ever since. The news of his passing stirred up a lot of negative emotions that Davor had previously managed to suppress. At the beginning of the story he couldn't care less about his grandfather, but because of his journal he started to believe him. Things that his granfather lived through made Davor even more angry at this messy town …but he's willing to forgive his gramps…

🐝 Becca Warrick: It was a ...funny story that brought both of them together and they look after each other ever since. He considers Becca as his precious (not in a negative-possessive way) treasure, he literally can't let anything bad happen to her. That was also she who came up with the nickname 'Dove'... (and she's literally the only person who calls him that, others wouldn't dare...). He had feelings for her for quite some time but didn't act on it... until now. Although he didn't express it, he felt very nervous about Becca being in the town where he grew up. He was curious (but also scared) about what she could think of this town. He felt like he was revealing more of himself to her…. and he forgot about any worries pretty fast, because the town started being weird as fu--.

🕊️ Reese Verner: Back then Davor was quite cheerful and enjoyed competing with Reese regularly. They teased each other a lot. Davor always thought that Reese had a crush on him, was it true tho? donut know, but he certainly had. ...why does he appear in his nightmares? Maybe the crush stage never disappeared...? Seeing him again was a nice experience, sure... but ignoring the circumstances, he is still unsure if it was worth it and is struggling with his thoughts… Would it be worth it to return to Fernweh just to see him... again? welp, good thing he doesn't have to think about it much, am I right?

🕊️ Sofia Dorran: The two of them maybe did not have a strong relationship, but he knew Sofia is the ideal person for engaging in intelligent conversations. He enjoyed spending time with her, solving the puzzles that gramps created for them both. Davor wasn't a fan of fantasy books, but she managed to change his mind about them. Davor knows that Sofia did take good care of his grandfather, but he still doesn't quite know if he's grateful for that or wished she spent her time more... valuably... He was tempted to ask Sofia to borrow that book she found in his grandfather's bedroom, but he thought better of it. It's better to leave Fernweh… Even so, his curiosity wasn't properly fed.

🕊️ James Corvin: Maybe not brothers by blood, but definitely brothers by choice. Davor treated him as if he was the brother he always wanted to have. Back then Davor always placed a high value on his family… until now. At the time, Davor tended to be more impulsive and James was usually the one who kept him from getting into trouble (which often involved Reese). It was really hard, for both of them, to see each other after so long. Their first interaction was pretty awkward... I would even say that most of their interactions were . James noticed how Davor changed the question is: for the better or worse? I don't even know. Everyone can sense, that things around them are different now, and they aren't as close as before. Will it change?

🕊️ Alek Corvin: …To say that Alek wasn't a fan of Davor would be an understatement. Was it because James spent most of his time focusing only on Davor trying to get him out of trouble? Did Alek observe any possessiveness from Davor towards James? Or maybe simply because of the bond between those two, which was truly something that others would envy and desire? Davor never considered it, especially when he left Fernweh permanently. :)) As you can imagine, Alek doesn't seem very happy about Davor's return… But he took an interest in his new friend, Becca, which did not go unnoticed by Davor and he isn't really happy about it.

🕊️ The Waitress: Oh boy, it seems that Davor has taken up a new hobby, which is glaring harshly at the waitress. He finds her mistrustful and he smells trouble. Had they met when he was younger, there may have been a slim chance of them getting along.

🕊️ Waffles!: So um… Davor has a little issue with dogs and because of that his relationship with Waffles isn't as wonderful as I wish it would be... However, I believe that with time and help from Becca, they will eventually become friends.

Chance Meeting at Sameria

Small lil hurt/comfort thing I wrote for this painting in like 2 hours containing lore of Lynda and some of her new friends, please enjoy! ^^ (Derek belongs to a friend, I only own Lynda :D)

The city of Caitara is wonderful, bustling, filled with colourful fabrics and merchants selling their wares in the covered market near the walls. Camels are led to and fro, women carry jars and baskets on their heads, salesmen display carpets with intricate designs and herbal blends for cooking. The air smells like spice and dry sand and it suits the unrelenting heat of Sameria irritatingly well. Lynda doesn’t think she could last long living in such a place; it’s too hot for her tastes but it makes for a good vacation destination. Too bad she isn’t here to relax; there is a war coming –a war that she is definitely not prepared for with a lame arm in a splint.

Enizor said the bone would heal in a few days if she let it rest with the lifebloom concoction he’d prepared for her once they had recovered the Phoenix Crown. So, she has temporarily let go of her dual blades and opted to use one of those bejewelled staves that once belonged to the Greenwish Cult. Some of her crew have tagged along for the walk and are doubtlessly planning on loading the ship with as many bags of exotic herbs and trinkets as they possibly can. The twins are already using their salary to buy out a merchant’s Samerian Ice stock –she chooses not to ponder on what they’ll do with that much ice (it’s not like they’ll stay here for that long). The less one pokes into their business, the less likely they’re to get involved in their mess.

While browsing the fabric rolls at one of the stalls in the market, Lynda notices something rather unusual. She caught a glimpse of a navy blue coat and two feathers sticking out of the crowd, a sight that’s quite familiar to her. Without thinking twice about it, she abandons her crew at the market (silently apologises to the stall owners for the inconvenience) and chases the blue coat in the blazing streets. The noise, apparently, is too loud for her voice to be heard when she calls out, so huffing and unwilling to give up, she stubbornly follows to the entrance of a bar.

“Derek!” she calls out as she pushes open the door, right after the man in the blue coat and the feathered hat, and walks in with her makeshift walking cane, ignoring the two hooded heads that raise at the sound of her voice. The man in question is already seated at the bar with a glass of whiskey and his hat placed beside it, raises his head and waves her over, a smirk playing on his lips.

“It’s nice to see you again, Lynda! You’re as stunning as ever.” he says once she sits on the stool beside him. She rolls her eyes at the compliment but still smiles as she looks at him. She rests the staff against the bar.

“Always such a charmer.” –if he had one handy, he’d be offering a rose along with the flattery– “What brings you to the Nimbus sea?”

Lynda orders something simple so as to not get kicked out from the establishment once the barkeep clears his throat with quite the pointy look. They happily chat for some time, with Derek becoming increasingly more flirtatious the more sips he takes of his drink and Lynda sharply criticising his poor pick-up lines. It’s familiar, a little game she’s realised she’s missed since the time they spent hiding from the Grand Navy in Frostmill with some other friends of his.

And then, within a moment, his grin drops as he looks at something behind her and he excuses himself afterwards to walk outside. Derek has a habit of smoking and always does so outside, so Lynda doesn’t think much of it. He didn’t take his hat with him, so he’d likely return in a few minutes. So, oblivious to the one remaining hooded head that is turned her way,  and the intense eyes burning holes in her back, she takes a few sips of her own drink. That is until she is approached by someone, and the table where once sat two mysterious people is now empty.

“I’m not interested,” she waves the person off once she feels a shadow behind her. Ignoring, however, does not appear to do the trick, as the person remains brooding behind her. She sighs, and shuffles in her seat. “If you have something to say, then say it and–”

The look in his eyes is intense and there is something swirling in there that makes Lynda’s blood freeze: bloodlust. In a place like this? Seriously? What is she supposed to do? She can’t initiate a fight in a crowded bar with a wounded arm and Derek is outside, doing who knows what and taking too long to return. She doesn’t know this man, meaning that he is most likely a mercenary –she has (unintentionally) pissed off a lot of people, especially after the Silverhold incident. Surely, there is a way for her to weasel her way out of this.

“Are you with him?” the man asks in a gruff voice. She glances at his hands and notes one of them is wrapped around the handle of the sword hanging from his belt. He isn’t going to strike in here, is he? And his words stick in her thoughts. Wait a minute… What mess is Derek involved in?

“I know him.” she says, neither lying nor telling the full truth; just enough to be considered irrelevant to whatever mess has come knocking at her door. But, apparently, the odds are against her today.

“You’re affiliated with those pesky Haze scallywags, then.” the guy spits at the floor with distaste at the name. Oh, I see what’s happening now. “Prepare to die.”

The bar erupts in flames. The door is blown off its hinges, smoke and screams blow in the streets that aren’t in better shape. Lynda dashes away, holding the staff in one hand as she runs away. Derek is nowhere to be seen but his presence is visible in how ash is raining from the sky and the grey particle clouds that darken the evening sky. Whomever that hooded man is, he is certainly not alone –if only she’d noticed sooner. This must be what changed his mood so spontaneously. And he certainly doesn’t give up on the first hurdle she throws at him. He swings a strange, wet sword at her and she can only deflect each strike with how fast he’s moving, only receiving nicks and a few searing slashes.

A strong gust of air blows that vulture off her back. A woman in iridescent teal armour with gold accents quickly comes to her aid, black, messy hair and narrowed eyes. She helps her to her feet and shouts at her to hide until everything calms down. Another man steps up, wielding some solid type of magic that she has half the mind to note before she runs off again.

The fight is over in a few minutes. It was a hit and run attempt from a rival clan, by the looks of it, and by the time everything has settled, the royal guard has evacuated the streets, duly prioritising the safety of the people. They were probably going to get involved in an attempt to end the armed dispute but they were too slow. When Derek regroups with two of the clan’s allies that happened to be in the Caitara, he thanks them both and they pat each other on the back.

It’s disappointing how that fight couldn’t be ignored but those men in the white hoods had been looking at him and Lynda the whole time they were at the bar. Their eyes were locked on them, and when the first one walked out, he knew there would be trouble waiting to happen. Only, he was hoping the second one would follow behind him once he left, and not stay behind to go after a wounded woman. He is surprised and relieved to hear from his allies that they stopped his pursuers from chasing after Lynda. Though… neither of them know where she is.

“I saw her run towards the market,” the woman in the iridescent armour shrugs her shoulders. “She’s probably fled the town by now.”

“No, no…” Derek shakes his head. Lynda wouldn’t flee and leave her allies or friends behind, she isn’t that type of person. However, the fight ended so fast because his attackers ran away when they realised they were outnumbered; she should be back by now to check up on them, bringing food and ice packs and some type of antiseptic cream; stuff like that. “I’ll go see if I can find ‘er. I’ll see ya two later.”

He leaves, marching to the market that has been temporarily abandoned and most of the goods have been destroyed. There is blood on the ground, little dry droplets that blend in perfectly with the leftover ash, and would have escaped an untrained eye. It should be normal, there was a huge fight after all, and he has a still bleeding scratch on his face as proof. And it should be normal but it isn’t. It can’t be. Something feels incredibly wrong, and cold claws of dread shred through Derek’s back.

There is more blood the deeper into the market he goes, with fading sunlight and the shadow of the tents, it’s more difficult to see. Yet, the silhouette of a figure lying on the ground is unmistakable. The dress with the flowers, the gleaming emerald of the staff, the light green hair. Please don’t be dead. He rushes to the unconscious woman and removes one of his gloves to check for a pulse.

“...rek?” comes a weak murmur and he lets out a breath he didn’t realise he was holding when ruby eyes open just enough to see. 

“Don’t speak.” he tells her, carefully arranging her limbs to lift her into his arms but when he tries to pull the stave away from her, her hand closes even tighter around, so he lets her hold onto it. “Let’s get you to a doctor.” She doesn’t say another word. Soon she decides that sleep is underrated and closes her eyes, letting Derek’s movements lull her. He can smell the dry blood and the seared flesh when he shuffles her body against his chest and the way her head thumps against his collar the moment she’s safely caged in his arms makes his blood boil. If he ever crossed those vultures again, he’d make sure they’d pay for this.
