🪻🩵💫
Kids of the smartest woman on earth and her malewife alien.
I am. Very passionate about the Vegebul kids. Trunks got shelved and GT was a train wreck and Bulla deserves better. I hope Super will do more with her (probbaly not but let me dream).
I think Bulla is entitled and egotistical, much like her father who definitely treats her as though she’s the most important thing in the world. She’s the princess of all Saiyans- duh. But she is still steadfast, kind, and witty. She’s born with a natural tail but can’t achieve Super Saiyan to save her life. Her best friend is Pan and she also deserves to fight. I refuse to believe Bulla could get away with never learning to fight under her father’s roof. Her fighting style is acrobatic, more on the defense than hard-hitting, having to adapt because SSJ1 is kinda beyond her for reasons she can’t really grasp.
Trunks is the opposite but still very similar. Cocky but socially awkward, very powerful but doubts himself a lot. He’s a very protective older brother, especially when he and Bulla can start training together. He was born with no tail yet his ascension abilities are top notch, obviously as per canon. With Bulla, he’s the most elder brother person ever. All of the bullying and teasing and knocking stuff over in her room for no reason but he equally spoils her and definitely thinks she’s his better half.
And hear me out— we should be grateful Vegeta’s more. Dominant. Characteristics didn’t win on the punnet square but. Trunks is a spitting image of Vegeta (same nose, eyes, strong brow, heart shaped but sharp face) with a build like Bulma (taller, broad shouldered, lean). Meanwhile Bulla is a good mix in the face of her parents (Bulma’s eyes but Vegeta’s irises, Vegeta’s nose and height, Bulma’s lips and jaw) but she’s on the shorter side. Both have widows peaks reminiscent of Vegeta’s though… just not as. Yeah. Five head.
But they have Bulma’s laugh, Briefs hair color, elegance, and her smarts. :3

Character Mixes 4/?: Caulifla and Kale
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SIDE A: CAULIFLA Punkish tomboy, tough Saiyan blood pumps in her veins... but she's still got a sweet spot for her girl~
You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring Ain't It Fun - Paramore Take a Hint - Victoria Justice & Elizabeth Gillies (Victorious soundtrack) Girls - MARINA Jenny (I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship) - Studio Killers I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend - girl in red It Means Everything - Pedro Silva (OMORI OST)
(A/N: To get some of the more punkish tracks for her I actually had to tread out of my usual vibe for jams a little bit to get You're Gonna Go Far, Kid and Jenny. Could definitely use the former for a fight scene. Also considered Born2Run by Penelope Scott but I felt some of the lyrics were a bit too real-world-events for a fictional character.)
SIDE B: KALE Soft, shy, working on her self-esteem, pining for the one who sees her. She's got a tough side, she just needs the confidence to let her feelings loose.
Pink in the Night - Mitski Boys Will Be Bugs - Cavetown Cloud 9 - Beach Bunny Strawberry Blond - Mitski Doctor - Jack Stauber Stay Soft - Mitski Brutal - Olivia Rodrigo
(A/N: Kale was actually a bit tricky to do at times since some of the sweet stuff could apply to the Caulikale ship as a whole. I did manage to find some Kale-sided sweets for this side. Brutal is definitely a bit more intense than the rest of her mix- but that's her on the edge track, when her temper finally snaps.)
TAPE TWO: CAULIKALE/KALE-IFLA A pair that's tough to separate. Another side of them comes to light with this crush; Caulifla sweetens and Kale perks up. Honestly, a lot of this is just pure lesbian Chex Mix.
Still Into You - Paramore Be Strong and Hit Stuff - Casey Lee Williams (RWBY Volume 8 soundtrack) We Fell In Love In October - girl in red Homecoming - girl in red Magnet (Kasane Teto & Genbu Cover) - ELGD (original by Minato) Girls - girl in red Space Girl - Frances Forever
(A/N: I really love Be Strong and Hit Stuff for their tournament getting stronger together vibes. It was actual tricky to find other stuff that hit that mark, so I treated this more as what they'd vibe to- The Lesbian Chex Mix if you will (note: that phrase randomly came to me one night when I was planning this character mix and it's been on mind ever since). Also, when putting these together, I always act so hesitant with adding some of these tracks like I have to ration them out sparingly and I can only use them for one character's aesthetic. But that's not a rule that exists- heck, there are overlap tracks between Kale & Cabba and Frieza & Hit. Anyway, I've also found that Space Girl works really well for Kuriza x Bulla/Kurla. Just noting this.)

Oh man I've been sleeping most of the day today and at one point in between naps I started thinking about your ep 27 commentary and specifically Bulla not having anything to do and like...presumably she just heard baby's whole deal she could like sneak home and warn the others/start coming up with strategies to deal with this. Like since he's entering through wounds they could develop some kind of armor/fabric to make it harder for him to get to the skin? They could capture some of his human victims and study them? Idk kinda just retreading future trunks and Bulma hiding out from the androids and zombie movie stuff but it's more interesting then everybody but Satan and buu getting babied and those two not doing anything about it.
I hadn't even thought of that! Bulla got away scott free! And she wasn't there when Baby explained how he takes over other people's bodies, but she could have stayed hidden nearby and listened in on them. Or she could have flown back home, found out about Goten, and helped Bulma connect some of the dots.
And there's a two month span between Episodes 27 and 28, so maybe Bulma and Bulla really did try to organize some sort of resistance, and it got crushed without a trace. But it would have been a lot more interesting to see than what we ended up with.
It just goes to show how important Bulla would be in a scenario like that. However briefly, she was the last Saiyan on Earth at the time, so it'd be up to her to protect it. I don't know how she'd hold off Vegeta, Gohan, and Goten, but I suppose it wouldn't be too different from Future Trunks holding out against 17 and 18, as long as she had some kind of defense against Tuffleization.......... which she has, because the Sacred Water reverses Tuffleization, and she can fly over and warn Dende, who can fill her in on it. And she could spend some time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and train for the battle...
But Kozo Morishita nixed all of that. Not that they were looking to do a storyline like this, but the possibility never would have occurred to them, because it would mean letting a dumb ol' girl take the lead.
This reminds me of something I used to think about doing in a Time Patrol story. There's an episode of Justice League Unlimited where they're dealing with time-anomalies, and at one point, Wonder Woman vanishes, and then Green Lantern (Jon Stewart) is replaced by a different Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) in mid-sentence. I thought it'd be kind of neat to have some time crisis play out, Luffa looks over and Trunks is suddenly Bulla instead. But it felt like it would take too long to explain. Still, I always did like the idea of a post-apocalytpic Bulla...
It just really bums me out how unambitious GT really was. There was just no desire to push the boundaries and do more with the characters.

Also if I can ask another, what’s Chasing Pavements about? That title is really interesting !
omg, i literally forgot about this and just saw it in my drafts now. sometimes I think I might be a bigger ditz than Bulma’s mom.
Tumblr media
Actually, it’s a fact 😫 lmao.
So chasing pavements is a fic I’ve been working on for years….sorta lol. I’ve been writing self indulgent drabbles and one-shots for myself within that universe probably as early as 2012. I never really planned on posting anything related to it, due to my lack of confidence in my writing, But now I’m connecting the dots, and turning all my little ficlets into a multi chapter story.
In a nutshell, Its a story about what happens to the next gen characters after GT.
Just a little background….
So at the start of the story, Goten is 33, Marron is 29, Trunks is 34, Pan is 24, Bulla is 23 and Uub is 28. I changed the ages slightly for reasons that probably only make sense to me Lmao.
It takes place after the events of GT. Everyone kinda settled and fell into mundane lives with normal jobs. Trunks is still CEO of capsule corps, Pan is…well, I’m keeping that a surprise;D Goten is a construction worker (I just could never see him being happy sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day). Marron is a yoga and dance instructor. Even though she isn’t a fighter, I always HC that she still loves staying active and being healthy. Bulla is still in college, purposely taking forever to graduate so she doesn’t have to deal with the responsibility of working full time at Capsule corp lol. Uub is the head of Mr. Satan’s martial arts school. Pan was offered ownership around the time she was graduating from high school, but Gohan and Videl wanted her to focus on college and get a degree in something practical and stable.
Now for the plot lol:
The first few chapters revolve around Goten and Marron’s wedding ( Yay more MarTen, I know that’s right up your alley LOL). The festivities, and everyone being together again starts a chain reaction in the next gen characters that will change their lives forever. Some will realize how much they miss martial arts, others realize they need a career change. I’m keeping it vague since I want most of it to be a surprise lol.
What I can say is that there will be 3 couples that are highlighted in the story, MarTen being one of them. The other two pairings are kind of out there but I’m going to try my absolute best to write them in a way that is believable, struggles and all. Those other two pairings also don't happen for a very long time into the story, and there will be A LOT of buildup getting there.
A little more about the Marten portion of the story: Goten and Marron start out with tackling the obstacles that come with being newlyweds living together for the first time, including (but not limited to) in-laws dropping by unannounced at very awkward moments. Goten also finds out a hilarious secret of Marron’s. The story of how they got together also gets told through flashback scenes. They unfortunately suffer a great loss not that long into their marriage, but they eventually get everything they want and more
Tumblr media
This is a long one (That’s what she said)
The outline is currently 50ish chapters long and I haven’t even covered everything i want to cover. There's going to be new villains (no return of frieza. that purple dummy is dead dead in my book lol), a world tournament arc, Trunks and Goten’s much awaited space adventure, new vigilante justices,  and so much more. I’ll probably be writing this until the day I die lol. But anyways, you can expect comedy, heartbreak, angst, a pinch of tasteful smut (lf i even end up including it.) and enough fluffy fluff to supply every build-a-bear workshop in the continental united states.
Thanks so much for asking about it! (And I hate that I took so long to post this, My brain has been so fried the past few months)
I’m so damn excited about this fic. The 1st and 2nd chapters are almost done, I’m just struggling with a couple of things, but I should be out soon :D

Toppo: So, is that the most your power-up affords you, Sayan? You still cannot defeat me, Warrior. Accept your fate.
Vegeta: After all your lofty talk of justice, now you only destroy? Thats quite a shift for you.
Toppo: I have no use for justice if it cannot save our universe...And what of you? You fight merely to keep a promise to a fellow Sayan? You think such a trivial cause can compete with a destroyer's resolve?!...I ordain what will and will not exist, that's my cause. And to serve it, I forsake all else!
Vegeta: You've forsaken all else and dare to call my cause trivial?...I fight for Bulma, for Trunks and for Bulla. I fight for an oath I made to a fellow warrior. For my Sayan pride. I fight for all I built, and all I am. Unlike you, I won't abandon all of that to play god!

So, how do you feel about the last 3 chapters of the DBS manga and how they compare to the anime?
Okay, I just read the latest chapter. I’ll cover my thoughts on them all in bullet points:
* The rest of the fight with the Gods of Destruction was pretty good. Getting to see all their various powers was a lot of fun. But, my thoughts remain the same from when I commented on this version of the Zen Exhibition match from when I talked about chapter 28. It’s great that we got to see more of the GoD’s early on, and the fight, while not really that long, was a spectacle.
But, I still don’t know if this was the better option to Buu, Gohan and Goku fighting the Trio De Dangers. The GoD’s are important, but their main role in the story is going to be just gathering the fighters from other universes, commentary and coming up with some plans. It’s the fighters from other universes, and especially the Z fighters, that need the screen time and set up more, at least for this particular story (Fleshing the GoD’s out is also very important, but they’re all likely to appear in future stories anyway and have more time for fleshing out, so they shouldn’t take priority over pre-established characters and one’s that are more crucial to the actual tournament)
Going by this change, Majin Buu doesn’t get to do anything in this version of the story except fall asleep, which i’m sure is not going to go over well with his already frustrated fans at all. Gohan will have less time to set up his comeback and getting his fighting senses back excluding his fight, and manga only readers probably won’t get much time to get to know or care about the Trio De Dangers, assuming they still get erased first here, which is sad because they are well liked characters despite not really scoring any major victories.
It was a fun fight don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to say it was an outright bad change. But it does raise some concerns, is what I’m saying.
* I’m a bit torn on Toppo. On the one hand, it is cool to see what the guy’s really capable of, and him beating Goku in this version does help up the tension and make Toppo look like more of a bada## compared to the anime. But, at the same time he also feels a bit more… bland?
I mean, Toppo in the anime was a boisterous ham, very flamboyant and pretty upfront with the fact that the guy’s a sentai parody, but still someone you could take seriously despite the goofy mannerisms and speeches. It’s what made him entertaining. In the manga, while we do know a few more details about him like he’s a God of Destruction candidate, his personality feels a lot more serious and straight faced. It kind of just makes him feel a lot more plain, really. It also feels like Toyotaro just straight up dropped the parody aspect.
I mean, I guess given the different circumstances you could say this shows more of how Toppo acts when he’s not fighting people he considers evil, but I dunno. Given a lot of the original characters in the last few sagas felt more bland and less interesting with how Toyotaro wrote them, I’m kinda feeling like this is just another case of that.
I know some people would probably argue that Toppo still comes off better in the manga for actually winning against Goku, but there was a reason he didn’t just straight up win in the anime and Goku was allowed to briefly get the upper hand on him. It left Toppo shaken, gave us an insight into how much weight Toppo felt on his shoulders having to be the hero that everyone in his universe depends on.
And moreover his subsequent growing fear over Goku’s power and concern over the consequences of losing to him, especially since Toppo thinks Goku’s a villain, has caused Toppo to slowly have an emotional breakdown over the course of the saga, culminating in him telling Dyspo to stop caring about justice in episode 104 and that only survival mattered in the tournament of power. Which is a shocking thing to hear, since even two episodes ago he was still showing good sportsmanship and fairness in standing up for the Kamikaze fireballs right to transform uninterrupted.
We still don’t know where they’re going with that angle, we’ll probably see in the final stage of the tournament, but it does emphasize the inhumane nature of the whole set up of the tournament, and how the threat of complete universal destruction can break even the mightiest warrior’s resolve. It adds a sense of tragedy to the whole proceedings. Contrast that in the manga, where so far Toppo seems concerned, but otherwise extremely calm and collected about the whole situation.
I dunno. Again, he’s not exactly bad here, but I think I still prefer the anime’s take on Toppo so far.
* On the other hand, Goku does come off as a lot less of a careless idiot in the Zen Exhibition match portion of the story here, since no one knows about the universes being erased until after Goku fights Toppo. That was handled better. But then of course we get the nonsense with him not knowing how baby’s are born and how he wasn’t around for Gohan’s birth, and doesn’t seem to know when his birthday is for that matter. Which… yeah, I already wrote like a mega post about Toyotaro’s handling of Goku, so I’m not going through all that again. But to put it brief, I think that’s the most insulting thing done with Goku in either version, but hey, at least Toyotaro got one part right.
Really proves my point from last time though. For every thing Toyotaro improves on compared to the anime, he has to throw in something else really stupid to counterbalance it.
*Artwork continues to be lovely. Say what you want about the man’s writing, but God Toyotaro can really draw.
* I like Jiren here more than the anime. He doesn’t get a ton of character, but he feels a lot more like a noble superhero here, which is more than in the anime. Good going. Just wish Toyotaro could have done Toppo as well too.
* I prefer how the anime handled Bulla’s birth and Vegeta’s reaction. Vegeta being clearly concerned for Bulma and anxious for his child’s birth but too embarrassed to just admit it to anyone out loud because, hey, proud warrior prince from a culture that thrives on toxic masculinity. Even with the development he’s had, Vegeta still has a ways to go before he’s going to be open about his feelings to people. But it was still cute how much he clearly cared and wanted to do a better job being a father to Bulla than he was when Trunks was very young.
I also really liked how it was Trunks who first offered to let Vegeta hold Bulla, you can see Vegeta really considering the two of themselves for a moment and it leaves you wondering on all the thoughts going through his head before he quickly accepts her. There was some nice subtle symbolism there.
In the manga, Bulla being magiced out of Bulma feels like it was way too sudden, and we didn’t get time to see all the characters gathering around to see her like in the anime. Which, honestly just makes her birth come off as more incidental and just obligatory in this version. And not only do we not get to see Trunks here and his reaction to getting a new sister, but Vegeta’s reactions are a lot less nuanced. He’s just shocked with how Whis brings her into the world, and smiles as Bulma hands their daughter to him to hold and he comments “Ooh, it’s a girl”. Honestly, it’s still cute, but not as interesting nor does it bring out as many character moments from the cast.
Also, despite knowing that the universes would be destroyed in this version, Vegeta still refused to fight in the tournament before Bulla’s birth. Because of course that makes sense.
(Also I miss the effect from the anime when Bulla was being born. Her just popping into existence and falling out of the sky is slightly funnier, I guess, but not that visually interesting)
* I don’t know what to think about the scene with the Pride Troopers fighting the monsters in this version. On the one hand, it’s great to see them rescuing and evacuating civilians in this version, that was a nice touch. And it’s a bit bigger in scale despite not lasting long since all of the pride troopers are fighting a bunch of smaller monsters in addition to the big one (Which is a reference to a villain from a Dr Slump special. Nice).
On the other hand, like with Toppo in the last chapter, it kind of feels a bit less fun than the anime. The anime added a lot of dramatic flair to the scene between the music, the monologueing villain, Toppo Kahseral and Dyspo doing a roll call complete with a back explosion (Ahh, nostalgia), and some dramatic speeches. Sure, it was just three Pride Troopers fighting a monster in a seemingly empty city, but it was fun and really evokes the sense of a Power Rangers/Sentai giant monster battle (Just minus the zords) in an entertaining way.
Compared to that, the manga version feels more like stock superhero action. Which, I’m a geek for superheroes so I still like it, but it feels somehow less entertaining. Also, I don’t like how everyone ends up getting trapped in some sludge and Jiren has to save them all. I like how Jiren’s written here, but this kinda feels like it gives off a sense of he’s carrying the whole team and the other Pride Troopers aren’t really needed aside from clean up duty.
Which, okay, you could argue that in the anime Jiren pretty much carries the team since he’s the main threat for Goku to overcome, but most of the other Pride Troopers do put up good fights, and Toppo, Dyspo and Kahseral handled the giant monster fight fine on their own. So there’s a sense that even if they’re not all on the same level as fighters, they’re equals as superheroes protecting their universe.
I dunno, maybe I’m just reading too much into it. Again, it’s not bad, I just didn’t quite enjoy it as much as the anime.
* I miss Krillin’s fights with Gohan and Goku. I mean, I’m not surprised, it’s clear that Krillin having a character arc was an anime only invention and the manga usually has faster pacing and covers events like this quicker than the anime, so I expected some of the characters wouldn’t get fights in the build up to the tournament. But the downside is that Krillin’s participation ends up feeling a lot more obligatory and because they just needed to fill out space on the team.
Heck, there’s actually a joke where Krillin comments on how Goku seemed more excited to get 18 on the team than him, whereas in the anime Goku was a lot more supportive of Krillin and clearly wanted his help. And there was emphasis on how useful Krillin could be due to his experience in tournaments and improvisational skills. Plus his character arc prior about overcoming his depression and taking up martial arts again in the first place.
I mean, maybe Toyotaro didn’t want to hype Krillin up too much, since he does end up being the first elimination and a detail that seems like it would very much be a Toriyama’s draft kind of decision. I know a lot of people were shocked by how fast Krillin went down in episode 99. But he could have done something more for the guy.
So, yeah, I prefer the anime here too.
* I liked the fight between Android 17 and Goku better in the anime, it was just a bit better, though the manga’s is still decent. Interactions aren’t quite as good though, Goku mistaking the head poacher for 17 and putting on his mask (Which makes him look like Mighty Mask. Which, that feels too specific to not be a reference, in which case… why?) was just… kind of awkward. I preferred seeing Goku helping 17 out against the poachers.
Like the detail about 17′s family living on an island nearby to the one 17 works on though, that’s not a bad idea. Though I miss Goku’s excitement at seeing a picture of them, and we still didn’t get to see what they look like. I’m guessing Toriyama was too lazy to come up with designs? Eh, maybe in some breather episodes when the arc is done.
* I see the stuff with the space poachers isn’t in this version, though the minotaurus is for some reason. And apparently there‘s more than one of them in the manga. I understanding skipping the space poachers bit, it was mostly padding with a few amusing moments. Not sure how I feel about the detail about 17 agreeing to fight partly because he feels he owes Krillin one for wishing the bomb out of him. I guess that’s sweet though.
Also, Goku agrees to let 17 have the wish on the super dragon balls because there’s nothing he wants to wish for. Well, I guess we can safely say he isn’t intending to revive the other universes yet in this version at least. Don’t know why Toyotaro thought that was necessary to include, since he brought up that 17 didn’t just gather the regular dragon balls to wish for his cruise liner because he didn’t have time. Why didn’t he just have Goku offer to gather them for 17 then?
Well, Okay, it was mentioned that asking Zen’o to change his mind about not erasing the universes might just get him angry and cause more trouble, but I’d have liked to see the characters dwelling on the prospect more.
* Oh, hey, Uub cameo. Eh, cool I guess, but I don’t see why everyone’s freaking out about it. Sure, it’s nice we see what may be one of his baby siblings, but we don’t find out anything we didn’t already know about Uub or learn anything that wasn’t also mentioned in the anime version. So, it’s a neat little detail that we actually saw him briefly, but not that important.
It does suggest Dende bringing up the idea of Goku training Uub was something Toriyama wanted to happen in the story though, which has me curious about whether the next saga or one of the ones after it is going to head into EoZ territory. Or maybe have another series set after it. I mean, that’s probably not the case and this is just some cute little fanservice to remind people that yes, Uub does exist and EoZ will happen, but I can dream.
* Why don’t they just chuck Buu in the Hyperbolic time chamber in this version then? We didn’t see Vegeta blowing it up again, and there’s at least a day left before the tournament at the end of chapter 31, it should only take four hours in the chamber to make up the two months Buu needs to sleep. Was it not repaired from it being destroyed in the Future Trunks saga? Would have been nice to mention that.
I dunno, Toyotaro usually gets a lot of praise from his fans for giving greater detail to explanations to stuff than the anime gave, so this feels like an odd oversight.  Either way, I miss the Fit Buu fight.
* I’m guessing the meeting between the Supreme Kais and the Gods of Destruction will either happen next chapter or in the one after it, or it won’t happen at all. Or maybe we’ll just have one chapter setting up the other universes fighters before the tournament itself. I dunno, I’m hoping Toyotaro doesn’t just skip out on setting up anyone besides the Pride Troopers before the actual tournament, that would be dumb.
I think that’s all I’ve got to say for now. I’ll let you know later if I’ve got anything else. I dunno, so far apart from Goku’s idiocy the manga’s handling of the universe survival saga hasn’t been bad, compared to the Future Trunks saga anyway. But it still feels less entertaining than the anime version anyway. A lot of the changes and ideas are interesting in their own right, but at the same time it feels like some parts are lacking.
The last two chapters especially feel kind of like how the Champa saga went in the manga, basically just a watered down version of the anime events with a few interesting added details and bits of explanation, some things done better, but on the whole not quite as entertaining and fleshed out where it matters.
Again, not bad so far aside from some stupid stuff, but I wouldn’t call it Toyotaro’s big comeback or anything. I’ll still see how it goes for the rest of the story. It’ll be interesting to see which characters from the tournament might actually get more spotlight and more screentime than they did in the anime.
That’s really kind of the upside to having two versions of the same story that take noticeably different paths in adapting Toriyama’s outlines, when I think about it. The manga has a chance to flesh out certain characters and details that were given minimal detail in the anime, and vice versa. I still think the anime is the more entertaining experience as a whole so far, but despite my issues with the manga and I’m sure I’ll still have stuff to gripe about like I have with Goku’s portrayal, I can’t say I’m not also curious. So, it has that going for it.

God/desses and Festivals G-P
Genii: Guardian spirits (singular: genius). Juno were the equivalent for women. Much like the lares, the genii are abstract divine beings that reside in everything-- each family has one, and each object too has one. The juno had various titles depending on the marital status of a woman: Iuno Iugalis for marriage, Iuno Matronalis for married women, Iuno Pronuba for brides, and Iuno Virginalis for virgins or single women.
Hercules: a deity-hero who inspired strength and ruled over childbirth and infants. Amulets were made representing his club which particularly caught on in Germany and Scandinavia. Brides in rome would wear a belt tied with a square or reef knot, known as a Hercules knot, likely to protect their virginity, as it was difficult to untie.
Honos: a later god of chivalry, military justice, and honor; sometimes identified with Virtus.
Inuus: god of sexual intercourse and possibly of livestock, by extension fertility; maybe a facet of the god Faunus.
Invidia: goddess of envy and inevitable retribution. She has the Evil Eye and was often associated with witches and magic, especially Circe.
Ianus: god of gates and doors, and by extension, beginnings, endings, transitions, and duality. He was often depicted with two faces facing in either direction, generally with one face bearded and the other clean-shaven. He is ceremonially invoked before any other god, as he ‘opens the door’ into Heaven. He must, for this reason, also receive an offering. New Year’s Day is sacred to him, and omens observed were said to affect the rest of the year. Cakes made of salt and spelt were burned on altars to Ianus, and people made gifts of figs and honey to one another so they would start the year out on good terms. The beginning of each month is also sacred to him, and a sacrifice was offered accordingly.
Iuno: queen of the gods and wife of Iuppiter. Her symbol is the peacock and her festival as divine mother was celebrated as the Matronalia, on 1 March. Sacrifices were made in her honor, and women received gifts from their husbands and daughters and prayers were made on their behalf. Women attending Matronalia rituals were not allowed to have their hair up or wear a belt or any other knots in their clothing. A meal was also prepared for the household salves, who did not have to work. She also rules over the first day of the Lupercalia, and was celebrated on the Nonae Caprotinae (7 July, where women of all castes would picnic and play games under wild fig trees). Her main functions as a goddess were to enforce sovereignty, rule over fertility, and protecting troops in war. As mother of the gods and Queen of Heaven, she also ruled over marriage and faithfulness, and protected women, especially wives and mothers (making her month, June, the best in which to marry).
Iuppiter: king of the gods and god of the skies and thunder. His symbols are the thunderbolt and eagle, and his sacred tree is the oak. He is the husband and brother of Iuno. The ides of each month were sacred to him, as well as the nundinae, in which rural people were allowed to sell their wares at the markets. He had the most festivals of any god or goddess, including the Visalia (19 August), the Meditrinalia (11 October), the Poplifugia (5 July), and both of the epulum Iovis (13 September and 13 November). He is a god of weather, the sky, the keeping of oaths, and trust and justice, especially as they relate to government function.
Iustitia: goddess of justice, law, and divine order. She is often pictures with a set of scales in her left hand, weighing the strengths and weaknesses of a legal case.
Iuturna: goddess of fountains and springs and mother of Fontus.
Iuventas: goddess of youth who watches over those coming of age. An offering was made to her by a boy who was first allowed to wear a man’s toga.
The Lares: guardian deities who observe, influence, and protect all within their sphere of function-- mainly the household. Most homes had an alter to the lares which watched over the family within, and offerings were given them regularly. Lares also ruled over fields, roads, ships, and the Roman state as a whole. The bulla of a boy becoming a man was given to the Lares on their shrine, as were the hairs of his first, ceremonially-shaven, beard.
Laverna: goddess of thieves, cheats, liars, and darkness; an infernal goddess. Libations were made to her with the left hand.
Latona: goddess of light and mother of Apollo and Diana.
Lemures or Larvae: the vengeful ghosts of those who were not given a proper burial or funeral rites. A feast called the Lemuria was held on 9, 11, and 13 May to exorcise these spirits by walking barefoot and throwing black beans over the shoulder at midnight, saying ‘haec ego mitto; his redimo meque meosque fabis’ (this I send; with these beans I redeem myself and my family) nine times, then banging bronze pots together, saying ‘Manes, exi paterni!’ (Spirits, leave the home of my fathers!).
Levana: goddess who oversaw the lifting of a newborn child up by the midwife following the cutting of the umbilical cord; protector of newborns.
Liber: god of wine, fertility, and freedom, associated with Bacchus. He especially ruled over fertility in nature and agriculture, as was celebrated alongside his consort, Libera, at the Liberalia festival (17 March), a rustic traditional ceremony at which Liber’s priestesses wore wreaths of ivy and made libia (cakes) of oil and honey for sacrifice. A large phallus was carried through the countryside to bring fertility and protect from evil.
Libera: the female equivalent of Liber; goddess of female fertility.
Liberalitas: god of generosity and free giving.
Libertas: goddess of freedom and the Roman commonwealth, whose symbols were the pilus and the festuca (associated with the manumission of slaves).
Libitina: goddess of burial and funerals whose priests were grave-diggers.
Lima: goddess of the threshold.
Lua: consort of Saturn to whom soldiers sacrificed captured weapons.
Lucina: goddess of childbirth, often associated with Iuno.
Luna: goddess of the Moon and female complement of Sol. May also be an aspect of the triple goddess alongside Hecate and Proserpina. She is often depicted driving a two-yoke chariot, or biga.
Lupercus: rather obscure god of shepherds and wolves who was celebrated at the Lupercalia on 15 February.
Lympha: agricultural goddess of fresh water. Also a divine source of inspiration or epiphany. Her cult-- and cults of nymphs in general-- were related to worship of Bacchus.
Mana Genita: a rather obscure goddess who appears to have ruled over infant mortality: i.e., knowing if a child would be born living or dead. Dogs were sacrificed to her.
Mania: goddess of the dead, who ruled the underworld. Sometimes called the mother of ghosts or mother of the Lares.
Mars: god of war and masculinity, father of Romulus and Remus and therefore of the Roman people. He is also rather more loosely connected to agriculture and the wilderness as defender and protector of Roman interests. The wolf, bear, peony, and woodpecker were sacred to him. The beak of a woodpecker (likely the European Green Woodpecker) was carried as an amulet, believed to contain Mars’ power to protect from harm. He was often depicted in the nude with only some armor and a weapon, a symbol of his bravery and lack of fear. The spear, often wrapped in laurel, is his symbol. Horse races, the Equirria, were held in his honor on 14 March and 27 February, and were said to have been started by Romulus. His priests were the Salii, twelve youths who dressed in warriors’ clothing and guarded Mars’ sacred shields. Mars was also celebrated on 17 March, his Agonium Martiale, 23 March, the Tubilustrium (a feast to cleanse the trumpets used in sacrifices and make the army fit for war), 15 October, the sacrifice of the Equus October (October Horse), and 19 October, at the Armilustrum (a ritual purification of weapons).
Mater Matuta: Often associated with the goddess Aurora. She ruled over the dawn, newborn children, the sea, and the harbour. She was celebrated at the Matralia on 11 June, at which single women prayed for their families and then drove a slave out of the temple.
Mellona: goddess of honey and beekeeping.
Mena: goddess of the menstrual flow.
Mercurius: guide of souls to the underworld and god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence, divination, travelers, luck, thieves, and trickery. His symbol is the caduceus, and his sacred animals are the cockerel, the ram, and the tortoise. He brings dreams.
Minerva: goddess of wisdom, weaving, strategy, and the arts. Her sacred animal is the owl. She also had authority over doctors and medicine. Her festival, the Quinquatria, was celebrated 19-23 March and poetry contests and plays were held. Women consulted fortune-tellers throughout the festival. Offerings were also given on her behalf on 13 June.
Moneta: goddess of memory; mother of the Muses.
Mors: god of death.
Murcia: a mysterious goddess about whom not much is known, though she has been associated with both myrtle trees and with laziness.
Mutunus Tutunus: a marriage deity, about whom not much is known. His symbol is a winged phallus. Christian writers later claimed that Roman brides would use a dildo of sorts sacred to this god shortly before their marriage to prepare them for sex.
Nenia Dea: goddess of funerals, and especially the funerary song.
Necessitas: goddess of destiny and inevitability.
Neptunus: brother of Iuppiter and Pluto; god of the sea and of horses. He was celebrated at the Neptunalia, 23 July, when shelters were built out of tree branches to host picnics and games.
Nerio: goddess of valor and war; consort of Mars.
Ops: goddess of abundance, fertility, and the earth; consort of Saturnus. Mother of Iuppiter.
Orbona: a goddess who was invoked by barren parents who prayed for a child.
Orcus: god of the underworld who punished those who broke oaths.
Pales: god of shepherds and livestock. Celebrated in the Parilia on 21 April, which was also marked as the anniversary of the founding of Rome. The festival included a ritual jumping through a bonfire of straw, olive branches, laurel, and sulfur; grain and milk offerings; and purification of livestock pens and quarters.
Parcae: the Fates; Nona who spins the thread of life, Decima who measures it, and Morta who cuts it, choosing the manner of a person’s death.
Patalena: guardian of flowers.
Pax: goddess of peace, often depicted holding a scepter, cornucopia, and olive branches. Her festival fell on 3 January.
Di Penates: domestic gods of the storeroom, to whom an offering was burned at every family meal.
Picumnus: god of growth, fertility, matrimony, and young children.
Pietas: goddess of duty, devotion, loyalty (especially to one’s parents) and religious orthodoxy. Her symbol was the stork.
Pilumnus: nature god who looked after growing children. New parents would make up an extra bed after the birth of a child to invite Pilumnus into their home to watch over the child.
Pluto: god of wealth and king of the Underworld. Husband of Proserpina; often associated with Dis Pater. Saying his name was generally avoided lest he take one’s soul.
Poena: goddess of punishment and divine retribution.
Pomona: goddess of fruit, gardens, and orchards. Her symbol is the pruning knife and her festival was held on 13 August.
Portunus: god of keys, doors, ports, and livestock. His festival was 17 August, the Portunalia, on which keys were thrown into a ceremonial fire to invite good luck.
Priapus: god of agricultural fertility, fruit, and penises. He was always depicted with a large, prominent erection. He was also a protective god, whose large penis was rather a threat to those who would dare trespass or steal on a property he protected, as depicted in the Priapeia.
Proserpina: goddess of spring, grain, and the underworld. Daughter of Ceres. Her return to the Underworld to be with her husband, Pluto, marks the turning of the seasons to winter, and when she ascends to the surface to be with her mother, spring and summer return.
Providentia: goddess of readiness, memory, and understanding.
Pudicitia: goddess of modesty and virginity.
