When Grand Master Varka left he emptied Mondstadt of its horses. A general call was put out that horses were needed for a critical mission, and those in Mond who could spare them, were asked to. Most in and around the city and countryside gave up their horses to the Grand Master's request, opting for oxen and mules to see to their carts.

Those of the Cavalry and belonging to the knights were assumed to be surrendered over for the mission.

With one exception: Ru.

Ru is Kaeya's horse - hand-trained and beloved of him.

The one and only time the knights of the Ordo have heard Kaeya raise his voice in an argument was the day the Grand Master asked him to turn over Ru.

It sent shivers down the spines of those who passed the Grand Master's door as Kaeya never raises his voice, much less in a verbal disagreement. However that day raised voices were heard as the Captain and the Grand Master sorted out their... disagreement.

It did not lead to permanent bad blood, and the end result was clear: Ru staid (there was no chance she was ever leaving).

Various Genshin Impact Headcanons (and Why I Have Them)

- Some of these might not actually have an explanation or a mini drabble - content warnings: drugs/drug mention, Archon Quest spoilers, Traveler is stated to be Lumine (only because i play as her), hints of angst - ship mentions: heikaveh, zhongchi - None of these are listed in any particular order - This list will be constantly edited and updated - This list is also long as FUCK

• Alhaitham actually doesn't like black coffee.

He always orders 2 coffees, though. One black, the other with enough sugar it really could barely even be considered coffee anymore. Both cups will be taken to his office at the Akademiya, and sometimes a passing scholar might see Master Kaveh of Kshahrewar leaving the Scribe's office with the extra coffee cup. However what they all fail to notice, is that Kaveh's cup isn't the one that contains an excess of caramel and chocolate syrups, whipped creams, and sugar, like one would assume. That cup remains remains with Alhaitham. It's his, after all.

• Dendro users can control their own/another's psychoactivity

okay i know this one is WILD but stfu and hear me out. so, most alcohols are made with fermented grains and fruits, there's an entire wiki page on psychoactive plants/mushrooms, can you see where im going with this. Dendro users (namely Tighnari bc face it, that one dude in his character demo was lit like a mfn christmas tree, and tbh so was he) can either sober themselves up or induce a hallucinogen (severity and effect varies on who and what the purpose is for) when needed

• Anemo users can control their own oxygen levels

i actually saw this one somewhere else (i think somebody else did a think piece on other ways Vision holders can use and control their elements) and i just wrote it into my understanding of how Teyvat works and then i remembered that while yes, we do get the 15% stamina reduction, no, it is not stated anywhere in game that Anemo users never get muscle exhaustion due to lack of oxygen in the bloodstream.

• Certain Hydro users can control blood

Those users being Tartaglia, Kokomi, and Barbara. Tartaglia bc fucking DUH, Kokomi bc she WAS a leading figure in the Inazuman Civil War (lbr, Kokomi deserves a little more violence in her life. i mean look at her), and Barbara learned as a medical thing, in case someone needed to keep blood flow going, and to help find veins for things like IVs or vaccines.

• Mona went to the Akademiya as a Rtawahist scholar

It only lasted MAYBE 8 months, but she was there. If you didn't see Layla's name in the top spot after exams, it was more than likely Mona's until she left for Mondstadt.

• The exams at the Akademiya are on a month by month basis

Because there are so many people going in and out and doing self-studies at the Akademiya, it wouldn't make sense for exams to be on a quarter by quarter basis, so they're done at the end of every month instead.

• Kaveh actually does know about what happened in Sumeru City

Cyno initially told him that there was trouble, and he was searching for Alhaitham. Kaveh wasn't able to leave his project in the desert to help, but thankfully, Candace gave him a run down on the plan and everything that followed when he returned to Aaru Village in preparation for returning to Sumeru City. During the library scene, yes, Kaveh already knew, but he wanted to hear AH's version of the events. Meanwhile, Alhaitham is being difficult because he doesn't want Kaveh to worry over a certain plot event. (He could just leave it out, however Kaveh always knows when he lies.)

• No one knew about Alhaitham using the Divine Knowledge Capsule in the Grand Sage's Office

canon can say they knew all it wants, you'll pry the angst of when this goes sideways out of my cold lifeless hands

• Klee is the in-game reason why we haven't seen Dornman Port or the Dandelion Sea yet

She accidentally blew up the connecting mountain to Dornman Port while fish blasting, and the Dandelion Sea resides further north (meta reasoning is we return to Mondstadt at some point before the Khaenri'ah chapter, and that'll open up this area)

• Tartaglia is actually a really good healer

He learned because he didn't want his younger siblings to worry if he came home with an unexplainable amount of scars, but no one else in the Fatui believes him when he says he's a good healer bc of how he acts on a battlefield (you know that one scene from Sailor Moon where Usagi is like "i got a C+ in first aid!"? that's him)

• Tartaglia is extremely good at wood carving

There was a little truth to the toy seller "lie". He might not be the best, but he does sell a lot of wood carvings for children. The carvings are especially popular in both Liyue and Sumeru.

• Alhaitham and Nahida both find Cyno's jokes funny

Alhaitham doesn't outwardly laugh, but he's losing his mind on the inside, but Nahida is just a ball of giggles for a good thirty seconds following.

• Flowers grow around Dendro users according to their emotions or location

It's best seen with Catalyst users (ie. flora grows under Nahida wherever she walks, qingxin and violetgrass grow in Baizhu's hair whenever he's in Qingce Village), but Yaoyao usually has a few silk flowers and qingxin in her hair, Kaveh has been seen with a crown of Nilotpala Lotus and Padisarah on multiple occasions (especially around the Palace of Alcazarzaray), and Alhaitham has been caught with a Kalpalata Lotus once or twice.

• Kaveh is the reincarnation of the Goddess of Flowers/Alhaitham is the reincarnation of King Deshret

• Baizhu is at least part Adeptus

i just. i have a feeling. Changsheng is there for a reason, Changsheng TALKS for a reason.

• All of the regulars at Angel's Share knows that Venti is Barbatos.

• Everyone in Liyue Harbor knows that Zhongli is Rex Lapis.

you can't tell me no one in the harbor read Rex Incognito and didn't go "hm. this kinda sounds familiar. oh yeah! this reminds me of the consultant at Wangsheng Funeral Parlor!" that is not statistically possible. (Everyone at Wanmin was subjected to a very awkward conversation between Tartaglia and Zhongli after Signora left Liyue.)

• The Fairy Floss Incidents™

- Klee is not allowed to have any by order of Acting Grand Master Jean Gunnhildr. (Klee almost collapsed Stone Gate while fish blasting until Diluc found her.) - Lumine got a recipe for it in Fontaine and offered to make some for Xiao, but he denied vehemently (Childe offered him some when he was visiting Zhongli and has thought it was something dangerous ever since) - Xiangling has yet to find a suitable recipe including fairy floss since it dissolves in liquids almost immediately. - Shogun hates it, Ei LOVES it, yes, this has caused multiple arguments within the Plane of Euthymia (Scaramouche despises the stuff, but becomes indifferent towards it after becoming the Wanderer.) - Nahida is no longer allowed to have it in large amounts by order of Acting Grand Sage Alhaitham and General Mahamatra Cyno.

• Jean and Barbara actually do have a good relationship with each other

let them be sisters, hoyoverse.

• Jean actually does know about Albert.

The only reason she hasn't done anything yet is because Barbara asked her not to, unless it escalates. However, Jean does have Kaeya monitoring the situation. (Kaeya was busy in meetings during that one ending in Barbara's Hangout [Untimely Enthusiasm] and she had asked Lumine not to tell Jean.)

• Kaeya and Diluc have forgiven each other but they have yet to forgive themselves.

• Jean actually does know about the argument between Diluc and Kaeya.

It's hard. It's hard not asking questions when you hear an explosion. A large one, one that you hope is only the little Spark Knight, but it can't be, because you know she was currently traveling with her mother through Liyue. Not asking questions becomes even harder when you find one of your closest friends sitting as if the world just broke underneath him with shards of ice and hints and trails of frostbitten skin on his left arm. It's exponentially harder when you find the answer to some of those questions shattered in a corner somewhere, nursing burn scars up and down his right side and a newly acquired Cryo Vision. And so, her first reaction is to heal. Heal what she can, and support the foundations of what she currently can't. Her second reaction is to seek answers. She seeks the answers, and she heals, and she puts the puzzle pieces together. But suddenly, one drops off the face of Teyvat, frostbitten and a heart full of fire and anger. She is left with the other, burned and a heart full of ice and sadness. It’s hard. It’s hard to move forward, and to heal two broken and hurting hearts, but she is Jean Gunnhildr, the Dandelion Knight of Mondstadt. And to heal and protect is her ambition.

• Kaeya has never seen a horse in real life.

There are no horses in Khaenri'ah and by the time Kaeya was in a high enough position to really be around them constantly, Varka had taken all of the cavalry on the expedition. (Jean went through with naming Kaeya the Cavalry Captain so she can ask for his help in an official unofficial capacity since the Knights of Favonius didn't [and still doesn't] have an espionage division.) To this day, Kaeya still thinks horses are something Diluc made up to mess with him.

• Raiden Shogun and Scaramouche have ball joints.

The night is heavy with a pending storm, thunder rolling ever closer in warning. The pounding of hooves against the cobbled stone of the Winery's courtyard seemed harsh and out of place. Who could be flying to the last bastion of the Raginvindr in such haste, as if dogs were at their heels? In the midst of a rolling clap of thunder, it drew up, harsh and purposeful, only long enough to throw something that had been draped across the saddle horn. The sky blazoned with lightening, illuminating the body crumpled against the door, tossed there like a discarded puppet.

Kaeya looked all the world like a corpse; bloodied, still, hair loose and wild and sticking to his skin. But death had not yet claimed him. There was a measure of instinct - deep, ingrained, visceral - that drove him to claw and flounder, trying to sit up. The wood of the door splintered beneath his fingertips as he dug in, almost animalistic, to lift himself. Blood dripped from his nose and he tasted it, foul and tangy, on his lips. Surrender would have been easier. Closing his eyes and waiting for the rain to finish the task left uncomplete so many years ago, when a young boy hid, half-drowned, beneath a wagon. Would Diluc's life be easier, that way? If he let the cold and wet and blood loss take him? Maybe he ought to crawl aside, like an animal going off the perish.

It is morbid, the thoughts that dance through his mind. His head thumps against the door. He tries, "Help-" But it’s a croak, and Kaeya instead, raises his fist and hits, as hard as he can muster. He folds, shoulder against the wood, trying to catch a breath into his lungs. Lungs, surrounded by ribs beaten in until he was coughing up horrid and red.

The first drops of rain splash onto his face. They're cold.

DILUC 

      storms like these don’t allow for any rest. they fatten the air with tension, chase silence from the world & the mind alike long before they truly start their tantrum; he cannot dream without jolting awake, cannot lay down without being brought back up by a cramping. regurgitated stress.                  a waste of time and energy, sleep.

            so he doesn’t try.

  the winery’s front doors were passed through hours ago.

diluc makes of himself a wraith between the densely packed trees in the wolvendom, pale & in pursuit. the sky riots above to make his boots sink into the mud below.     unease haunts every thought. he doesn’t think many.

              it is very strange, then.

...because he knows that horse.               its silhouette seems familiar, at least- & when the inaudible clop & scuff of hooves sees it list sideways, the smear of something is revealed that is familiar in a worse way. pale like he has been all night, clumped together like matted fur because it is & even through the downpour,      that must be-

muted all evening, the shriek that underlies him is what fractures through the fog of his mind first—what cramps through muscle to make it work. panic quickens steps that are allowed to slide across cobble for the double doors can catch his weight- “kaeya?” small, stoic mute with horror unlike the cacophony inside. on his knees beside him, diluc hovers like a bird picking carefully at her tousled nest.         he looks far too quiet, far too cold. a hand on the door / keys a short jangle of purpose — he hunched over another’s body to shield it from at least the rain. he’s not as wet as he should be- sweet, loyal animal: kaeya’s steed had shielded him, too. “stay awake. tell me where they got you.” want to pick him up, want to carry him. can’t. “kaeya?” a frisson of the hysteria that binds his chest seeps into his voice.

                          fuck.

         small touches map out what they can, but the rain & the dark make it hard to tell where kaeya begins & injury ends. something like rage ignites in the coldest parts of him; chill with horror.                                  the door gives way where it refuses hands shake to unlock. diluc’s voice leaps ahead of the thunder, rails against the lack of welcome his brother has received his fault & how disastrous that may prove to be. it is simply past the time for the servants to retire—he’s never made them wait up for him.

he can do this himself. he has to be able to.

the mind runs amuck, tripping over a short list made long by its stumbling:  towels, dry warm clothes, a bed & another for when the bleeding has been stopped. hot water, needle & thread- of all times, why do his hands shake now? ( because the last time they’d had this blood on them, they’d drawn it first. )         this time, he’ll change things for the better - & he’s too preoccupied to remind himself it won’t absolve him of anything.

“wake up, kae,” perhaps it is best he does not: the words come warbled, torn & twisted by a sorrow that refuses to stop insisting it’s too late. he pushes bangs away from his brother’s forehead & they’re almost dry / his touch carefully warm. he continues slaving over the injury.                when he whispers it again it’s for his own sake. a prayer to the last thing he could need badly enough to believe in - to cast aside brutal reality & hope. without care for how much worse it will make a- ...disappointment.       “w-wake up...”

CHILDE

He works day and night just to be by your side when you go to sleep. He can't let you sleep alone on that cold bed. He comes everyday and falls asleep while hugging your form. All the regrets and bloodlust now gone as he focuses on your sleeping peaceful form. He grows sentimental by the night and always worries about you 'how will you able to stay safe when I'm not here ?'. He is snapped back to reality when you softly speak in a low voice "ajax? you're here" and smile while turning towards him. Even in the darkest of nights your smiles brings him the brightest of dawns. He hugs you tightly to his chest and kisses your forehead. This soft and sweet side of childe is what only you can see.

KAEYA

Being a cavalry captain means that he is quite efficient in the ways of welding swords and riding horses. Although they don't quite apply at present but he has taken you out on horse ridings for more than once. Riding through the vast forests and along with the wind. As the evening fell, you two rested under a tree in Starsnatch Cliff while watching the sun set in each others arms. He held you close to him as he softly kissed you. Oh, how beautiful you looked as the suns rays fell on you. He could cherish this moment forever...however fleeting moments of happiness are best savoured when they are short-lived as they would continue to stay engraved in his minds for years to come...for centuries to last.

ZHONGLI

Hands intertwined with his big ones as you two strided along the coast of the sea. It was twilight, almost dusk. The cool breeze of the sea, accompanied by the lulling of the waves, all seemed so surreal. You were smiling brightly, and Zhongli felt that you looked ethereal. For all the years he's lived, he's never felt so loved and so lucky to have someone by his side. The lovesick moment between you and your lover was sealed by a kiss from Zhongli. Oh, how can you look so beautiful?

DILUC

Maids hear the sound of the gramophone from your and Diluc's shared room, but they just brushed it off thinking that it is you listening to the old mondstadt classics and waltz. Little do they know that the songs are on because two lovers are dancing to it. A cherished pastime of his as he softly holds you close to him. Steps careful and synchronized. The sound of footsteps, the symphony from the gramophone, and the glowing orange embers of the sun illunitaing the room through lace curtains. A dreamlike landscape. He looked at you with lovesick eyes, the same eyes he looked at you with when he first proposed to you. A gentle smile tugged at his lips as he closed his eyes, taking in the moment with you.

AYATO

Atop the cliff of Amakane Island, you and ayato were writing your wishes on the lantern, which would then float up to the skies to receive the blessings of the archon...as per the story goes. The lanterns glow illuminated your faces as Ayato carefully admired your face. 'you look so radiant tonight love' he thought to himself and then chuckling because of how helplessly he is in love with you. "Love I'm done writing should we let it go now?" you said excitedly and he humed in approval. The lantern was then let go off and it found its place among the blanket of stars in the night sky. Your lover held you close to him as he kissed you on the forehead, taking in the ethereal quietness and serenity of the moment

NEUVILLETTE

On the soft green grass, the melusines played as you carefully groomed Neuvillette's long hair. You braided it and added a few freshly picked rainbow roses and lumidouce bells to his hair. "Are the flowers necessary dear?" "nope! you look absolutely gorgeous love, don't take them off". He was about to retort until the melusines also agreed that he looked pretty with the flowers. He hesitantly agreed but if it means that it will put a smile on your face he will gladly do so. Putting the flower crown on top of your head that one of the melusines had made before, he held you close to him. He never felt so peaceful in all of his lifetime. It was a blessing to spend the day with his beloved and also with the melusines he adores so much. A smile broke out in his face as you all continued with your day. It seems that the sun will shine for quite a while today.

WRIOTHESLEY

Brewing tea with you always had such a wholesome domestic vibe to it. You boiled the water as he selected his and yours' favourite tea. Being his lover made you knowledgeable about all the types and kinds of tea and the techniques required to brew them. "Honey, you can put in the tea now. I'll go grab the cups." he added the required amount and waited for it to be complete. He listened intently to the song you were humming...what was the name again? oh! it was one of fontaine's classics. After it was done, you two enjoyed the tea in silence. It was comforting since most of the days inside the Fortress of Meropide is spent is hustle and bustle and matters related to the maintenance and whatnot. Moments like these were sparse, but he thoroughly enjoyed the little time he spent with you.

BEIDOU

Once the crux fleets arrives at the harbour, the first place Beidou takes you to is Wangmin restaurant or to any other local food stalls there are in the liyue harbour. From the spiciest of dry braised fish or stew to sweet and savoury rice puddings or even the fanciest of rice wines. All of them in one night. "Haha! I hope you are enjoying today, love days like these might come after a long time! maybe even months!" and she proceeded to chug down her entire bottle of wine. "thanks for this day beidou, I love you" you said as you drank your own wine. It was a full moon night and the sky was brighter than on any other day. What an eventful day it was with the captain of the Crux fleet!

Pet Headcanons

Alhaitham

She showed up in a previous post but I think he would have a cat

An Egyptian Mau to be precise, her name would be Asal (Persian for honey) after her golden/bronze coat

She would 100% be a curious and very intelligent kitten who loves to run around and play

Type of cat who just climbs up fabric/clothes and will sit on your shoulder or around your neck

Will bite and pull on your ear if you oversleep and don’t feed her

Literally embodiment of “Ray of Sunshine”

Absolutely loves Kaveh for some reason (totally not because he spoils her rotten)

“Kaveh, stop feeding her so much, she’s getting fat. I don’t want two spoiled lazy cats”

“Excuse you, she’s perfect and skinny as is… Wait did you insult me too?!”

Does tricks! she knows how to sit, shake, tap (where she taps her nose to your finger/thumb) and is learning more

Diluc

A big dog man

I could see him with rottweilers, german shepherds or bernese mountain dogs with a name like “Bear” or “Beau”, short, bold, and simple.

Originally gotten as guard dogs for a paranoid Ragnvindr who has many enemies and just got back from a murder spree in Snezhnaya, they now work more as emotional support dogs for him and others

He also still has his childhood tortoise (because those things live forever) which he named ‘Clip’ as a child

He’s very mellow, the dogs treat him as one of their own

They also cuddle and sleep together, two dogs wrapped around a tortoise who rests his head on the dog’s neck

When he and Kaeya were in their older teens, Crepus got them both large Clydesdale horses when they both joined the Knight’s Cavalry. 

He named his horse Skinfaxi and Kaeya has Hrímfaxi (named after the sun and moon horses from Norse mythos)

Skinfaxi is one hell of a mare, it took Diluc a lot of time, energy, and patience to get her to behave (though she still has a playful streak)

Would buck him off during training but she was the fastest horse in the Cavalry

He would take her on long rides at night through the woods and around Dawn Winery just to get her to trust him

Kaeya

Obviously, Hrímfaxi, who, unlike his sister, was much more timid.

They both got along really well, with no issues, unlike their siblings.

The two riding are almost like one being, completely in synch

With the cavalry gone, Mondstadt City doesn’t have a lot of space for a horse so he stays with his sister at Dawn Winery

Kaeya comes by whenever he can to ride him

But besides her he would take care of the stray cats around Mondstadt City, refilling food and water bowls around the city while on patrol

One day, after a long night, Kaeya woke up to clawing and meowing at the door and saw his favorite cat, a Calico named Lucky, wandered inside and flopped on his rug in pain, crying as he noticed the giant lump coming from her stomach

By sunrise, he now had a mother of three kittens refusing to leave his house.

Two girls (One Calico like her mom and the other orange) and a boy (A black cat with faint stripes)

He lets Klee name them: Sunny (Orange), Cloudy (Calico) and Stormy (the black cat)

The girls are definitely headstrong while Stormy is shy and tends to hide behind his big sisters

(as a kaeya kinnie with three stray/outdoor cats, he gets them too)

Childe

From a family with lots of big dogs, like Great Pyrenees, Samoyed, and Tibetan Mastiffs

When he moved to Liyue for deployment and got super lonely, his subordinates weren’t super close to him and locals didn’t trust him as a Harbinger, he grew rather lonely

Till he went into the countryside to deal with some Treasure Hoarders and saw them using weasels and ferrets to carry contraband and money around without notice

What really sold him was watching a little kid in the camp playing with one and rubbing noses with it

The next day Ajax had two ferrets running around his apartment with the most expensive ferret setup money could buy

They are the most playful, feral things who love running around and play-fighting each other

Named Jayson and Lila, a pair of twins

(totally didn't name them after the stoats from Burrow’s End)

Loves them so much and plays with them throughout all of his free time

Leaves them to his assistant whenever he is away or is busy (who proceeds to give her hell)

They love it when he wears big coats/parkas so they can climb in and snuggle

Cyno

Didn’t have pets growing up

His first pet was on a mission as General Mahamatra, arrested some guy, went through his house for evidence, and found a severely malnourished and neglected Leopard Gecko

Some of his claws had fallen off to nubs due to layers of sheaded skin build up and he was cold to the touch from lack of heating. 

The lizard curls up into his warm hands and it immediately melts the General Mahamatra’s heart

Immediately putting him back and picking up the cage, he leaves the rest of the investigation to his coworkers before rushing to Gandharva Ville

Scared Tighnari and Collei with how quickly he rushed in through the door with a giant glass terrarium.

Looks calm and collected but is sitting in the corner with Collei just staring at Tighnari and the lizard, internal panic on the inside

Once Tighnari gives an analysis, Cyno asks Nari to watch the lizard for a few days and he will come back for it

Proceeds to spend two days straight researching Leopard geckos and how to take care of them

Also blows a good portion of his paycheck on supplies for the gecko, a larger tank, lights, and heating pads, etc. 

Picks him up and takes him home as soon as the terrarium is set up

Names him something dumb like “Geck” or a combo of his and Tighnari’s names like “Tighno” 

Most people don’t know besides Tighnari and Collei that the gecko exists, and why would they? Who’s gonna believe that the General Mahamatra has a tiny lizard as a pet

When Alhaitham and Kaveh find out Cyno has a pet, Cyno immediately pulls out pictures from his wallet like a proud dad

Whenever he is away for a while, he has Collei house sit and take care of the lizard, pays her generously

Will just sit on top of Cyno’s head or shoulder and chill

Loves to chirp and make little noises for fun/comfort

(also a leopard gecko parent and my gecko is a rescue with all these attributes from being mishandled)

And the Traveller is just like "???" meanwhile Paimon integrates that into her vocabulary. And then maybe at some point, if the reader has a vision they're like "MAIMING AND BITING YOU" "THAT'S IT! I'M SENDING YOU TO EEBY DEEBY!" while their poor teammates are so confused. Just imagine going over to ppl like Razor, Klee, Chongyun and going "Awwww my lil scrunglos"

do you like kaeya and crepus interactions!! because this fic explores their dynamic in suuuuch a nice way that felt very refreshing to see portrayed!! perfect ratio of hurt to comfort in my opinion. overall quite lighthearted compared to my other recs though lol. good exploration of kaeyas inner conflict since a young age. yeah i love it and recommend it

I'm gonna miss your love when it's gone by imaginarypasta – A selection of scenes from Kaeya's childhood related to his relationships with his fathers, and all they have led him to be.

this one is so good!!!! i feel like its rare to see kaeyas biological father portrayed as anything other than a heartless asshole, and this fic explored kaeyas relationship with him in such a nice manner that makes for a very melancholic and. i guess bittersweet story that takes into consideration the nuance of the situation in a way that i really dont see super often. the parts about kaeyas relationship w crepus are also really well done i love it. oh and the khaenri'ah lore the author takes some liberty with is really really interesting!!

my bookmark of this work said "literally the best kaeya character study ive ever read" and honestly i still stand by that. the word flow is great and the exploration of fear as such an intrinsic part of kaeya's life and as the driving force for most of his actions and feelings and responses. it's so good!!! this one contemplates kaeyas childhood both before and after his arrival in mondstadt and goes until after diluc's return. absolutely recommend it!!

Hundred-Watt Light by pepperjuice – A story about ten years of contingency plans and holding your own hand. (Because how else are you supposed to live with a weight too big to hold all alone?)

this. this rewired my brain forever. this holds the title of best kaeya character study ever along with the previous one i talked about. definitely mind the tags because it primarily deals with suicidal ideation and thoughts so, if that's a trigger then it's best to not read this one lol but still it is SO good and it explores kaeya's inner conflicts and awful coping mechanisms after having such a heavy burden thrusted upon him at an extremely early age with no good support of any kind. i absolutely love this fic it's very dear to me and i think about it sooo often it truly altered my brain chemistry

things fall apart by kernsing – Happy eighteenth, Diluc.

finally some ragbros content! sadly it isnt the reconciliation you asked for it's about when things fell apart. this is one of my favorite ever renditions of how it all went down on That Day - it reshaped some of my own headcanons, actually. this one is more from diluc's pov than kaeya's, and it's written really really well, and explores diluc's grief over his father's death in SUCH an amazing and interesting way!! and the way it parallels kaeya's own emotions and that is exactly what causes them to fight is extremely tasty i loved it. read it it's good

I already did for Neuvi! In fact its easier for him bc he just came out, so i have a lot of things to extrapolate from, but I was writing long ass essays for kaeya for more than a year, so its harder to come up with anything new to say asdfghj. like i don't to repeat same headcanons i already wrote, like that he's related to candace

Headcanon: I can muster a cogent argument for why it would make more sense or make for a better story if this were the case

i've gotta say, i'm a bit peeved when i see ppl portraying child kaeya as like. a dickensian beggar boy who was let to the fireplace and cried bc he tried a cube of sugar for the first time in his life. like, alberichs are nobility and we know khaenriah took their nobility *very* seriously. and if they knew they are sending their scion to mond's nobility, they'd make damn sure he can keep up their dignity. kaeya canonically could read and write before he got to mond and game makes sure to highlight that his handwriting is beautiful.

i think kaeya was very well educated, very well schooled and mannered and prepared for like high society politics, and it was kind of a cultural shock for him how uncivilized ragnyvdirs are in comparison to his own upbringing. like he's a bit confused when he doesn't see 10 different forks at the dinner table, but he's keeping a brave face, but then he sees diluc wipe his mouth with a sleeve and like snatch a piece of meat from the dish and is just completely stunned. and diluc is like oh don't be shy, you can have more too if you want!, but kaeya is in fact seeing a heart attack his own father would have at this scene. this is why he comes off as very quiet and polite to all adults at the estate

Heartcanon: I don’t have a particular rationale for why this ought to be the case, I just like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the warm fuzzies

my conspiracy theory headcanon is that he does still have his horse, but doesn't use her for work. like when he just became a knight as a teen, he saw a horse that no one wanted or ever chose bc she had horrible temper, and slowly gained her trust with treats and attention until they've became friends like a true horsegirl would. that horse was left in mond bc she doesn't let anyone else ride her, so the expedition just left her to kaeya, but he just treats her like a luxury pet and spoils her to death

Gutcanon: it’s not that I actively want this to be the case – it just unaccountably feels like it should be

the first ability from his vision that ever activated was his C4 shield when diluc cleaved him on the head and this is what saved his life. this shield is v useful, but kaeya hates it as a reminder. he also has pretty big burnscar on his eye, bc like. he took a flaming claymore to the eye, no way he has a dainty little white line from a hit like that

Junkcanon: I like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the other kind of warm fuzzies

has a collection of corsets and elaborate lingerie sets. like, you open the corset on his default outfit and there is another, even sexier corset underneath

Spleencanon: I insist that this is the case specifically to spite the author, because, like, fuck you, sir or madam

The 3 of you had such a blast! It has been a while since the 2 of you have visited other nations so this was a well deserved break

Drank together, ate different dishes the city of freedom had to offer together, and made new friends

One day you met the calvary captain of the knights of favonuis while Tighnari was talking to Albedo

The conversation between the 2 of you shifted from work to animals to his title as the calvary captain

"Most of our horses have been taken in by Grandmaster Varka for his expedition however we still have around a few left here in the city just in case we need them" the captain started, "would you like to see them?"

You hesitated, a part of you didnt want to at all. You were afraid you'd break down and start remembering the past

But a part of you also wanted to, you longed to see another horse again

You longed to appreciate the way they strut, the way their mane flows when they jump, the way they look at you when you were getting ready for another competition together

Although their expression was overall the same, when you have a bond with a horse especially a strong one, their emotions as well as yours felt like they were connected

But youve avoided them like the plague

Regretfully, you said yes anyways

Your heart has won against your mind this time around

After a while the sun was about to go down and everyone was getting ready to call it a day

Tighnari and you left Collei with Amber so you both made your way to the inn youre staying at

The walk home was silent and you were staring down at your feet, and you seemed to be in a daze,

Gently, he took your chin and made you face him

You couldnt help but let more tears fall out

Yes you were still upset you lost your dearest companion

But you were also happy to hear those words come out of his mouth

You both stood in the middle of the road hugging for a while, waiting until you calmed down.

You knew it wasnt your fault that your beloved horse was gone, but Tighnari was right

He was always right

Your companion would never have blamed you for what happened to him

You wanted to be around horses again

But realise that the first step to finally be around them comfortably was to be able to accept and heal

And Tighnari will be with you every step of the way

KAZUHA ▪︎ Scarlet Leaves Pursue Wild Waves

You were with Kazuha relaxing together outside enjoying the fresh air

The sun was out bright in Liyue so you both decided to take a stroll before setting out to the sea again on the crux

At some point during your stroll a cat came to you and meowed

You stopped on your feet and looked down to see the cat starting to rub on you affectionatley

You of course bent down to give em some pets

Kazuha realised you werent on his side anymore and looked behind to see you gazing sotfly at the cat while playing with it

He cant help but think you looked cute

He walked towards you and bent down to the same level as you and watched you play with the cat

You broke the silence after a while

"I use to have a cat" still not breaking your gaze away from the cat

Kazuha looked up at you "oh really?"

"Mmhm, (gender) was beautiful, had lushious (colour) fur, ears so cute you could bite em off and eyes that when you stare at them for long enough, you could find yourself falling in love with (gender) again" subconsciously smiling when you said that

You missed your cat truly

They were your best friend

The ronin hesitated for a bit, not sure if he should ask the question that came up on his head

Without him asking you knew what was on his mind

Whenever Thoma was knitting something for the stray cats you'd request he made one for the dogs as well

You loved being around them and they seem to as well

He was in awe with how much bond and trust was between you and the dogs

He had brought up wanting to raise a puppy with ypu, or adopt one of the stray dogs

But everytime he asked youd politely decline saying you werent interested

He was confused and shocked obviously

I mean you clearly loved the stray dogs so why didnt you want to adopt one?

He had to find out

You were getting ready for bed one night looking at the mirror while brushing your hair when he asked you laying on a futon (youre visiting him)

"Oh its just, I wanna know why you keep rejecting the offer of raising a puppy together or adopting one of the stray dogs. Oh but Im not forcing you to say yes to my suggestion, if you dont wanna then thats fine its just-" he stopped talking when he saw you facing him

Your face was a little hesitant and your brows were furrowed a bit.

Like an aphrodisiac, your sweet scent wafted through the air, tickling Diluc's nose and he can't hold back anymore. His protruding fangs cut his lip as he licks over them with an insatiable hunger. You've always wondered why his cainines were longer than his other teeth. Always wondered why he favored kissing the side of your neck... Right above your pulse, "Mmm...D-diluc! That tickles~," you giggle, unbeknownst to you that a monster was kissing up along your neck.

"I must..."

"Hmm?"

"...have a taste..."

Diluc murmurs, his cheeks flushed with lust as he carefully cradles your neck with his hand, exposing one side. Drunk with desire, he pierces the side of your neck with his fangs, lapping up your blood like a rabid dog, "A-ah~ D-Diluc~," you moan out softly, surprised at the sudden attack, but you quickly melt in his grasp. Feeling the warmth of your blood seep into his mouth makes you high as you grasp onto his clothes. How badly you wanted to kiss him...

Finally pulling away, Diluc licks along his puncture wounds and kisses it softly, and you're left absolutely breathless. Looking him in his crimson gaze, he seems ashamed, but you cup his cheek softly and, standing on your tip toes, you peck him gently on his lips. Diluc, grasping your hips, growls into the kiss.

"Absolutely exquisite..."

The Moon is high in the sky when you awaken to something cool against your neck. You can barely make out the shape, but one thing is sure, there is a knife against your throat. Startling awake your eyes finally adjust, "P-please don't hurt me!" you plead pittifully to your attacker, who's glimmering sapphire eyes stare curiously back at you behind the comfort of a mask, "Almost too cute to let go, hmm pity..." the mysterious attacker says, raising his knife, but before he can strike, you shove him abruptly, surprising him.

"Excuse me! That was super rude!"

You shout as the man loses his balance, only to fall on top of you in a rather compromising position. Chuckling, the man drops his knife in defeat, removing his mask and revealing the rest of his face. Albeit covered in blood, he is rather handsome as his smile turns to a wicked one, and you can't help but shudder under his glowering gaze, "The name is Childe~," he coos maliciously.

"And why are you telling me this?"

"Because you'll be seeing a lot more of me~!"

"While you sleep, as you turn a corner, everywhere...!" Childe chortles gaily as he turns his vicious stare toward you, "You...you're special, so I'll save you for last," he continues, picking his knife back up and trailing it down your neck without piercing you.

"After all, I think you just caught my heart~!"

Kaeya

Glancing up at the moon beneath the trees, you squint. When did it get so dark? Hearing a low growl behind you, you snap around, seeing a small hoard of wolves surrounding you. Clutching your basket close to your chest, you begin to back away slowly, "Shit..." you mumble, making a break for it, yet in a flash, the sound of a horse neighing and feeling someone grab at your waist, you gasp.

"Begone vile things!"

A voice suddenly bellows and glancing around; you notice the wolves begin cowering in fear as they scatter. Feeling yourself lifted further and onto the warmth of the black steed before you, you greet your savior. Turning your head to face him, you let out a blood-curdling scream.

"Y-you have no head!"

"Sure I do, little darling. It's right here~!"

The voice chuckles, raising his head up to meet your gaze. Feeling faint, you clutch onto the horse to prevent you from falling, "S-so the rumors were true.." you manage to mumble, "You're the Headless Horseman!" you shout loudly before the man covers your mouth, "You best be quiet, little one~!"

"For you never know what sinister creatures lurk within these woods..."

Kazuha

You never understood why you always fell asleep around Kazuha. Maybe it was because you felt safe, or perhaps...there is another reason, but Kazuha would never tell you that. No, he would never tell you the real reason he puts you to sleep, for you would run away from him, and he couldn't have that, now would he? Feeling yourself drift off you mumble an apology toward your precious friend and he smiles affectionately at you, "That's quite alright, Y/N! Get all the rest you need," he says softly, stroking the top of your head.

"That's my sakura blossom...sleep only for me!"

Kazuha whispers excitedly so he wouldn't wake your precious self up. Sinisterly, he smiles, his usual soft red gaze, now glow the crimson color of blood. Taking a long sniff of your hair he sighs happily, but not for the right reasons. After all, he is obsessed with you, "Mmm...how I wish to make you mine," Kazuha murmurs, grinning down at your peaceful face, totally undisturbed at the fact your childhood friend has an unusual infatuation toward you.

Twirling your hair between his fingers, Kazuha presses his head against your chest, listening to the gentle breathes and cadence of your heartbeat. His breath hitches and he groans from pleasure, licking across his cainines.

"even if i get amnesia, i'll choose you over and over again, no doubt." it makes you slightly worried because he is prone to accidents but at the same time, gigglish at the thought of kaeya choosing to love you all over and over again. it was kind of funny when he said he swore on his eye, seeing as he only had one left, and when you pointed that out, he seemed upset knowing that's true, bothering you for days on end and clinging on to you like glue. "i might be joking now, but if i do lose you. i think i'm going to be sick.

the adeptus swore on his life that except from fighting demons, he wants to be with you for a lifetime. he wants to keep being here on the mortal plane just to stay with you and love you, xiao will do anything to keep you nearby, but he doesn't show it of course, he often drops by the book shop to research about average life spans of mortals. sometimes, xiao gets upset at the thought of losing you because of death. everyone will eventually pass on, but he didn't want you to. if possible, he wanted you to stay there and live on with him. and if not, he will look for you in others. perhaps as a reincarnation, to look for the first love of his life that he lost.

I read a post the other day about a completely different pairing that referred to "the thing where you adopted a kid with the intent to marry them in," which is not a thing I've ever heard of before but okay, I'm willing to adopt this into my suite of arranged-marriage tropes, and because I have been thinking about Kaeya and the Gunnhildrs as a family unit lately, in various configurations, I've been rotating something in my head that's vaguely shaped like:

As in the adventurer AU, Kaeya doesn't get picked up by Crepus, in this case because Crepus straight-up misses him in the darkness and the rain and Kaeya can't coordinate in the same conditions well enough to reach the Winery. So he's found the next morning, most of the way to dead, by Fredrica's company, out on patrol to survey the extent of storm damage. Fortunately, someone in the company (maybe Fredrica herself) has a healing Vision, and they're able to revive him.

Unfortunately, the knights Fredrica sends to question the Winery about his missing father fail to serve as the buffer against having to talk to Crepus herself that she'd intended (since I will roll perpetually with my headcanon that he's Seamus' friend who helped him get Barbara in the divorce unless it's actively detrimental to my plot, and in this one the divorce can easily have happened just before Kaeya showed up). He hears she's picked up a kid and immediately comes to check it out and offer his help. The boy could recover here-

She, Fredrica tells him stiffly, will ensure the welfare of this child. Crepus has no reason to be involved.

This was honestly just to make Crepus go the fuck away at the time; by "ensure his welfare" she just meant she'd drop him off at the Cathedral orphanage and make sure the investigation continued re: his father. But talking to Crepus has her fuming about the divorce again, and the whole ride back to the city, with this bedraggled, wary little kid clinging to her for dear life because he's never seen a horse before, never mind been on one before, and is terrified by the experience, wheels are turning in her mind.

The problem with Seamus was that he had completely different and conflicting expectations of what family life should look like. The other problem with Seamus was that he had his own supportive power base within Mondstadt, given his past with the Adventurer's Guild and his progress in the Church and his friendships with some of the key figures in the Wine Guild, and that's what gave him leverage to not just break away but take Barbara with him. She knows Jean is reading romance novels late at night when she's supposed to be sleeping, and is dreaming about a love match, but Fredrica had a love match and look how that turned out. Much better something practical, with a boy raised with proper expectations of what marrying a Gunnhildr would entail. A foreign child without a family wouldn't have nearly as much leverage to establish outside support and thus less incentive to break away from the family or ability to to take children (something that could be reinforced with a properly-worded betrothal contract). A child who, moreso, sees the Gunnhildr family as his saviors....

She does turn him over to the Church, there's procedures, but she applies for guardianship the same day. Despite Seamus' misgivings, there's no legal reason not to grant it. That guardianship is temporary until they've given his father long enough to turn up, which is fine; it gives her six months to evaluate him while under her care and judge his temperament and suitability, so she doesn't bind Jean to someone who turns out to be too unfortunate. But Kaeya is quiet and biddable and obedient, and if she can tell he's watching them both closely and fine-tuning his behavior to what he thinks they want to see from him, that just shows he has the kind of insecurity that she can turn into a strong attachment to the family.

Fredrica fills out the betrothal paperwork the day after she's granted permanent guardianship. It's not completely binding; Mondstadt has been resistant to the aristocratic concept of trading their children away since the Lawrences were deposed, and both of them will have to ratify it after turning 18. But she knows Jean will do her duty, and she has five years to ensure that Kaeya will, too.

And both of them do know their duty, and don't protest, and get to know each other and get along as she'd hoped. Everything seems to be going perfectly, up until the day before Kaeya's 18th birthday (on file as the day she'd found him, since he claimed not to know his own), when he comes to her with a strange little smile on his face and says he's been reading over the contract, since she expects him to ratify it tomorrow. He'd noticed that he's supposed to take the Gunnhildr name on marriage. And he knows how attached she is to the honor of the name--it's one of the things he's always liked about her, because she spoke of it so much like his father did about the Alberich name, and it was a comforting similarity when he was young and alone in a strange new place. So he would hate to have her unwittingly attach it to a traitor and a spy.

(I have no idea where it goes from here yet. There's also so many options for how Jean and Kaeya relate within this premise that I'm still contemplating a whole range of options and not ready to narrow them down, though I do like the idea, regardless of specifics of how they feel about each other and interrelate, of teenage Jean deciding at some point, well, they are getting married so there's no point in dating other people like all their peers are doing, but she'd kind of? Like to date? It looks fun. And there's no reason she can't date Kaeya. He's going to be her husband, after all. Kaeya finds himself waking up to flowers every morning and getting taken out to lunch and dinner and is charmed regardless of whether he actually feels romantically for Jean or not, because he does like her no matter what and he knows about her secret romances and it's cute. It's very cute that she's doing this. There's no reason not to play along!)

Little Diluc with Caregivers Zhongli and Kaeya

Diluc regresses between the ages of 2-4 though he mostly on the younger side of that age range

He has two kinds of behaviour depending on his environment. If he is regressed in a more open and public setting he’ll be a bit more shy and clingy. When he’s in a private place like home he’ll be more rambunctious and playful

There is a (not so) small collection of plushies he’s been accumulating that both Kaeya and Zhongli have been contributing to. Diluc has a plushie that represents every person he’s close to. His favourites are Dusty the great horned owl (overall favourite), lily the snow leopard (the plush that represents Kaeya) and a brown horse named Coco (the plush for Zhongli because “a dragon would be too obvious”)

Both Zhongli and Kaeya like to spoil Diluc. Zhongli will buy him toys and games, while Kaeya will buy his brother new little gear and craft supplies

They don't really own story books because Zhongli is a walking story book. Though Kaeya has had to tell the ex-archon to stay away from the more dramatic tales he knows

Depending on what headspace Diluc is in dictates who the primary caregiver is. Younger days Zhongli takes charge since he prefers the more relaxed and calm activities that can be done in one place. On older days Kaeya takes the lead since he is more active and prefers running around and having foam sword fights over sitting still

Diluc has nicknames for both of his caregivers. Zhongli is Papa and Kaeya is Bubba

Of course the two also have pet names for Diluc. Zhongli calls him hatchling, little prince and firefly. Kaeya calls him pumpkin, owlet and little bird

Kaeya is the one who is more likely to let Diluc get away with breaking the rules (there are limits to which rules he will let him break of course) Diluc is always thankful when Kaeya lets him have an extra cookie

Zhongli is the one who brings Diluc on outings with just the two of them. Diluc loves it when he gets to go visit Liyue harbour with his Papa

ok but listen, but what about klee and kaeya? is he her favorite adult? (Aside from albedo and her mom) it’s canon they hang out a lot and she speaks like his words are the ultimate truth lol, on one hand it’s funny seeing kids fall for your made up lies on the other, there is genuine fondness, children offer so much love and acceptance unconditionally and we know how much kaeya long for those even if he restrict himself, the need is there, it’s something to see him restricting himself less when he is with her? Or is he not?

yeah, they def care about each other! I haven’t played like old events so idk if they had on screen interactions there, they don’t really have now, but Klee references him several times as an authority on things in a way she doesn’t for others, not even for Jean, like “Kaeya says...” and is obv very fond of him.

and I think I already made some post about it, but I think Kaeya has soft spot for Klee bc she kinda a little bit reminds him of himself in sense of being a kid abandoned by the parent they love to the care of other ppl where the parent has some deep-rooted secrets that will affect the child no matter what... like obv Klee has it better bc she’s not sent with a secret agenda, like he was, and I think Kaeya tries to preserve her spirit and authenticity as much as possible while still making sure she fits in. like, his survival rules do not tell her to NOT do the bombs, they tell her how to do bombs and get away with it. and children are kinda safe zone for trust as in he knows she won’t notice his weaknesses or be as affected by the truth as adults would be, so yes, he’s probably more open with her. but also Kaeya clearly earns to be accepted by someone who can understand him, and like, a toddler is probably goes into similar category as like favorite pet( which is why i do headcanon he keeps his horse) where it’s a living soul who can love and trust you unconditionally and is safe to love back without being afraid to hurt them, but it’s not someone who can really get you like an adult could. so like you don’t have to be wary of them, but you don’t really get the understanding you want bc they are just not capable of it, even if affection is real and treasured.
