A summer at sea / Katie Fforde
'So,' said Emily, desperate to change the subject, 'Kate has a teddy who has to be knitted for. I'm hoping to get this scarf done quickly, before I go home.' Suddenly Emily wanted to knit very slowly, as if she wouldn't have to go home until the scarf was done. Although an exchange of emails with her future boss had told her that time was ticking away fast. 'You're not going home just yet,' said Rebecca firmly. 'You've got plenty of time to finish the scarf. You've got, what…?' 'A couple of weeks. I thought I could stretch it for a bit longer but now they want me as soon as possible.' 'That soon? I know you'd told me but I somehow blanked it out of my mind.' 'I think I had too, in some ways.' The women exchanged anguished glances. Unaware of their reaction, Valerie went on, 'Plenty of time to finish the scarf then. It's very small. Are you going to do it all in Fair Isle or just the ends?'
Niet verrassend, maar leuk genoeg.

It's party time!
Gosh, what a roller-coaster of a ride I’ve been on since Murder Among the Roses was released last month. It started with a blog tour and the book shot up to  No 1 in Noir Crime on Amazon with a lovely Bestseller flag. And it was a “Hot New Release” surrounded by Richard Osman. And the reviews! Oh, my gosh the reviews! Thank you to everyone who took the time to leave a review or a rating on…

Alredered Remembers Katie Fforde, British romance novelist, on her birthday.
"Trying to write for Mills and Boon taught me so much about writing. You have to keep the pages turning and not let yourself run down blind alleys. I still irks me that I never managed to bring it off."

Mini Book Reviews Again Again Again
I ran out of space but I'm nearly done now I swear.
Inkspell by Cornelia Funke, book 2 of the Inkworld series - Again, this is just such a good book; it's such a good continuation of the last one that you can't imagine the characters doing anything else. We get to see the Inkworld proper this time and it's such a beautiful fantasy world that you want to get your hands on a copy of the in-universe book Inkheart so you can read that story too, just to have more time in the world. The edition I have as well (not sure if it does this on every one but I expect it does) starts every chapter with a quote form a different book so that's brilliant for adding things to your 'to-read' list.
Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke, book 3 of the Inkworld series - Such a good finale to the series (though I suppose now it isn't the finale, what with the new one coming out this year). I can't say too much without giving away spoilers, but it's just such a beautiful, fitting ending. The world is still amazing, the characters are all brilliant and infuriating in their own unique ways so they really feel alive, and I just loved getting to be in the the inkworld again. I'm passing the whole series along to my mother so she can read them next, and I'm so excited now for the new one. I have no doubt it'll be just as good as these ones.
The Christmas Stocking and Other Stories by Katie Fforde - I read this one for a book club that I had to take over for a colleague and I thoroughly regretted it. Aside from the fact that the main themes of this collection of short stories seemed to be 'heterosexuality and Christmas' and I'm a lesbian who hates the festive period so I was never going to love it, the book was just badly written. Every story felt rushed and had too many characters and too much going on in it. It was also all very upper-class and snobbish, which I didn't like at all. A lot of the time, I felt like I was reading the first idea-layout for a full novel that hadn't even received a full first draft yet. The rest of the book club didn't like it either by the way so it isn't just me who thought it sucked I promise.

The reviews are in!
What a week! My goodness it has been the most exciting week. Having changed direction, writing crime rather than romance, I didn’t know what to expect, but it has been incredible. Number 1 in Noir Crime in the US! It started with the gorgeous video from Joffe, my publisher.  That moment when the rose crumples… goosebumps! Then it was in the hot releases surrounded by Richard Osman! Oh,…

Books read in 2018
Total amount of books read: 39.
Min fantastiska väninna (original titel: L'amica geniale) - Elena Ferrante
Mr. Darcy’s Diary - Amanda Grange
Eligible - Curtis Sittenfeld
Alex, approximately - Jenn Bennett
Call me by your name - André Aciman
Such a beautiful beautiful book. I didn’t know I would come to like it as much as I do. I found myself in the middle of the book, wondering how it all had started, completely consumed by the story. Reading it made me nostalgic, as if thinking back at fond memories of my youth.
Rosemary's Baby - Ira Levin
The Sudden Appearance of Hope - Claire North
The Hating Game - Sally Thorne
This book marks the beginning of my exploration into chic-lit and romance literature. Having reread this book several times this year has made me understand that there is more to the genre than I first thought.
Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell
Love, Simon - Becky Albertalli
Inte för nära (original titel: Close enough to Touch) - Colleen Oakley
After a couple of pages into the book, I knew I would come to love it, and from then on I was completely consumed by it. Following the protagonist struggles and needs in life made her very relatable and kept me wanting to know more about her. And you couldn’t imagine a better ending.
Mitt inte så perfekta liv (original titel: My not so Perfect Life) - Sophie Kinsella
A Secret Garden - Katie Fforde
Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar (eng. titel: Don't ever Whipe Tears without Gloves) 1. Kärleken - Jonas Gardell
Citizen Girl - Nicola Kraus & Emma McLaughlin
Attachments - Rainbow Rowell
This book grew on me the more I read it. At first I really didn't like the protagonist, him being very passive. But as the story progressed and him getting out if his shell, I became very fond of the story and it's characters.
The Kiss Quotient - Helen Hoang
Everything, everything - Nicola Yoon
Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar (eng. titel: Don't ever Whipe Tears without Gloves) 2. Sjukdomen - Jonas Gardell
First & Then - Emma Mills
Fantastic Beasts and where to find them - J.K. Rowling
Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar (eng. titel: Don't ever Whipe Tears without Gloves) 3. Döden - Jonas Gardell
Störst av allt (eng. titel: Quicksand) - Malin Persson Giolito
The little prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Ready player one - Ernest Cline
I enjoyed this book from start to finish and kept wondering why I so rarely pick up more action driven books. The combination of sci-fi and the unapologetic level of nerdiness made the book both honest and true.
Armada - Ernest Cline
Josh and Hazel's guide to not dating - Christina Lauren
Turtles all the way down - John Green
Love and other words - Christina Lauren
This must be my favorite book by Christina Lauren so far. The feeling of the book remainded me of David Nicholls One day, making it into an instant classic. Definitely a reread.
Och varje morgon blir vägen längre och längre (eng titel: And every morning the road home gets longer and longer) - Fredrik Backman
Me before you - Jojo Moyes
After you - Jojo Moyes
Still me - Jojo Moyes
Bränn alla mina brev (eng. titel: Burn all my letters) - Alex Schulman
As Alex Schulman is one of my favorite authors, this was an obvious read this year, and he didn't disappoint. The language is beautiful yet simple, making it an very intimate read. My favorite by Schulman so far.
Roomies - Christina Lauren
My favorite half-night stand - Christina Lauren
The Accidental Beauty Queen - Teri Wilson
Always the Bridesmaid - Lindsey Kelk
Accidental Tryst - Natasha Boyd

New chapter: novelist Katie Fforde to open Stonehouse Library
Best-selling novelist Katie Fforde will formally open Stonehouse Library next week alongside a day of activities following its move to new premises on the High Street. Stonehouse Library moved from its old location in Elm Road to the Town Council offices on the High Street in 2020, so it could be based in a more central location. It meant the library could benefit from a presence on the High…
