"Follow the Yellow Brick Road~"

This wonderful mock cover for a story I'm working on was drawn by my good friend, @katieaiko , who also helped me with refining story ideas and more importantly: designing and drawing all of the characters (which I'll be posting more of soon). Please show her some love because I couldn't have gotten this far in the project without her!

The story would be a fairly straightforward fantasy adventure with a good amount of action; to put it into perspective: the biggest influences on how the story is structured are The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. I have a great respect for L. Frank Baum's works and I wanted to create a unique (and most importantly: a fun and engaging) story inspired by them.

At the moment the story has a working title of "Guardians of Oz" and I see it potentially being a short book series, but I would love to see it be turned into an animated series ideally!

Synopsis:

The story follows a recently orphaned Dorothy Gale who gets spirited away to the Land of Oz, which has been thrust into a power struggle after the King's death and the disappearance of princess Ozma. What's more, the newly self appointed ruler, The Wizard, has enacted The Witch Hunts, sending four great witches who maintain order and balance in the Land of Oz into hiding. On top of this, the famed General Gingur, and the opportunistic Nome King have begun fighting against The Wizard's mechanical army for control over Oz. Before Dorothy can be conscripted into Gingur's army, she is rescued by The Wicked Witch of the West, Shula, and is dropped the bombshell of needing to learn magic and become the new Witch of the East if she wants any hope of getting home, before gifting her the magical Silver Slippers. Now alongside Shula, Dorothy must travel through the land of Oz as she makes friends and allies, to help complete her training and save the Land of Oz before it's too late.

I just noticed your Nutcracker and Mouse King design while scrolling-- It's FANTASTIC!! I loved the Barbie one growing up, but I agree about it needing some serious improvement. However, it did introduce me to classical music at a young age! I also liked Swan Lake and Rapunzel growing up. I actually have my own adaptions planned for Swan Lake and the Nutcracker myself!! My Thumbelina one can be found on my page actually!! (Sorry not trying to self-promote) And I'd love to know more about yours!

The Rapunzel movie was actually really good (heck it managed to make a big pink/purple dragon look cool as heck), and the other favorite I had was actually The Princess and the Pauper. It was very charming.

and honestly I stopped following them after that one. I just happened to watch the 12 princesses one but it didn’t really captivated me all that much.

and aah! I hope I’ll get around to work on my own version soon enough! it all depends when I’ll find the motivation on working on it xD;

After a bit of an absence, here is the last of the three major antagonists of the story: Roquat, The Nome King. Drawn by @katieaiko

The Nome King was introduced in the third book, Ozma of Oz. He's a greedy, mean spirited, opportunist who takes sadistic pleasure in making people compete in games against him as its simply more fun that way. I really liked his portrayal in Return to Oz and used it as inspiration for several aspects of this version of the character like having power over rocks and feeling like the Emerald City is rightfully his due to the gems used in its creation coming from his underground kingdom. I also wanted to exemplify more of his nastier qualities to make him more sadistically playful. This was in part to create a more distinct dichotomy between the antagonists. Much like his book counterpart, he also possesses a magic belt, though admittedly I'm still not certain on what it's capabilities will be besides transforming people and objects and amplifying magical power.

The Nome King has ruled over an underground kingdom of monsters and other bizarre creatures for many years, but his unfathomable appetite for territory, riches, and power could never be satiated. Thus when word reached him about the civil war that was starting in Oz, he used this opportunity as an excuse to rally the creatures of his domain to invade the surface, plunging the Land of Oz into even more turmoil.

Have you thought about turning your adaption of the Nutcracker into a comic or a series of storyboards? I would love to see it, and it would be a wonderful way to pitch it to an animation company! I think either way would make a wonderful career, since The Nutcracker Story copyright is in the public trust. Any original idea for it is yours to keep! At least I think it is, with so many other adaptions floating around...

Oooh trust me, I will do something with it. I just need to kick myself into finding the guts to try drawing a real comic or something.

As for the copyright thingie.... euugh I guess I’ll have to check it out if I want to make it serious or something. For now it’s just a fun project just for shit ang giggles.
