Rant about content from the class I grade

So I'm a teacher assistant for a class on leadership and the "toxic leadership" unit is bothering me. I really appreciate the importance of knowing how toxic leaders form/get strength, how to identify toxic leaders, and how to combat/prevent toxic leadership. But some of the vocabulary used is just ick. One of the main things the unit repeats is narcissism as common trait of toxic leaders and empathy as a trait of good leaders. And while I'm not cluster B in any way I'm like *blinks*. It wouldn't be that hard to say self-centeredness instead of narcissism. And while empathy can be important to ethical leadership, I feel like someone with low empathy could still use emotional intelligence skills to accomplish the same thing. idk. I get what the sources are trying to say, but I just don't like how alienating it could be. Again though, I don't have low empathy or narcissism so I don't want to linger on that too much. Another thing that was mentioned was leaders who are "paranoid or grandiose." Guess who here has experienced both of those things from their bipolar? This guy. I agree that if you're paranoid or grandiose to the point it's affecting you as a leader, that's going to be harmful to your goals and your followers. But I also know that these are things that (at least as symptoms I experience) can be managed. Yes, I had to go to the hospital during my last manic episode, so I get sometimes you can't manage them well. But I'd like to think that I didn't let it affect my leadership when I was teaching during that episode. I was able to inform the professor when I went to the hospital so it's not like the students were left without a leader, and the students seemed to enjoy the class when i was there. Yes, some people can't separate their work or their leadership from their manic symptoms, and that can create a toxic environment, but like, that's not because they have those symptoms, it's because the symptoms are unmanaged and are affecting work life. In fact I'd even argue that the fact I've had these symptoms and have been in treatment and am learning to manage them makes me a BETTER leader than I was before I had these symptoms, because now I have learned self-awareness and self-control. Idk these are just my thoughts. I guess going into the nuance of mental health conditions which cause narcissism/low empathy/paranoia/grandiosity is beyond the scope of a basic leadership course. But the way these "traits" are treated by not only this class but by society seems disingenuous.

just want to remind everyone that Krauser threw his knife directly into Luis’s spine. I mean clearly he aimed to kill. (srry for bad quality pic)

but what’s more is that very rapidly you lose function of your nerves if that happens, eventually becoming paralyzed (at least partially; ie. everything below the wound) from such damage to the spine.

That’s why it’s so devastatingly impressive and powerful that Luis was able to muster up the last of his strength and force his hand to shoot at Krauser-hitting directly at his knife that would have killed Leon.

as he’s shooting, Luis is leaning against something, unable to stand on his own, and after Krauser leaves, and he falls to the ground he sounds very pained. His body looks to be stiff and his arms fall limply. Shooting Krauser to save Leon was not an easy thing to do. But very obviously it meant a lot to Luis to be able to do it. Perhaps even one final concrete good thing. Even if it was right before his life ended.

of course this is also why Luis can’t properly use his lighter and needed Leon to do it for him. after his hand trembles and he drops the lighter, we do not see him move his body for the rest of the scene. (that wasn’t included in the above clip sorry but you can find it)

to me this is why this scene is one of the most potent in RE because holy shit,,when you rlly think about what it meant for Luis to be able to save Leon, and what it meant for Leon to light his cigarette for him,,,capcom when i fucking get you

leon probably has one of those silly kids nightlights in his room because ashley gifted him one and he doesn't like total complete darkness. darkness is scary and he also wants to see if he's gonna be jumped or not its like in an internal fear

the nightlight is a star with sunglasses because leon is a cool star and ashley thought it suited him

okay so Dave is a jackalope instead of just a regular rabbit since he's a cryptid. honestly a jackalope just fits too well because he isn't defenseless as a rabbit, but he isn't any more dangerous than Jack or Henry. Rabbits (or jackalopes) are good at running away, which makes sense with Dave's character since he's good at getting away with the murders at Fazbenders. And he didn't start out as a killer. He BECAME one because of Henry, so he started out innocent. I like to think of his antlers as a way to symbolize when he became a killer

Jack's a shibu inu because Blackjack is one. I feel like a shibu inu represents him better than a bear does because well. HENRY was the one to create the bear suit, and Jack isn't as dangerous as a bear, but he isn't weak at all. A shibu inu just makes more sense even if his soul wasn't one.

Henry is a bear because of his suit of course, and any other animal wouldn't make as much sense (besides for iguana LMAO). Henry is the most powerful out of the group, so bear just. fits?? like this guy could easily ruin these guys lives, which he does!!

I like how each animal fits so perfectly like directdoggo accidental or not he made them make so much sense. also the phoneys are mice because i thought it'd be silly lol

So glad people are pointing out the OOC writings that are being created.

It’s nice to have headcanons, I have some myself that I use in my own writing. Headcanons can give more life to the characters, building on their lore. But, many are just taking whatever fantasy they have in their heads and projecting it onto a character with no regard for how that character really is.

It would be better if those who wrote those type of fanfics would have a disclaimer that the content is OOC but majority don’t. I honestly haven’t seen that tag in years.

Just to name a couple characters I’ve seen it really hit, like, sorry but Ghost is definitely not abusive or toxic, and Leon Kennedy is the most awkward, kind character I’ve seen canonically. It surprises me that more people aren’t connecting with these characters on a deeper level, just using them at surface value. Aren’t delving into their lore and creating work based on that. So much could be written about these two.

The more serious work I’ve written hasn’t received hardly any attention and when things I’ve written that involve sexual situations has easily hit 100+ notes. Just seeing it firsthand is…Disheartening?

“Sex sells” is really a phrase that can sum up a lot of fan fiction that gets attention nowadays. There isn’t anything wrong with that, it’s just whenever you go to the tags it’s all you see. More serious work is drowned out and gets lost.

This is all to say that I wish to find others who write more serious work. If you do please let me know, I would love to see your stories and check out your writings!!

Reproductive health related ranting

I hate not having the money and insurance to make my own medical decisions. I'm in my 20s and it's my body, but it's not my money. My dad came home asking me if my pelvic ultrasound was medically necessary, and I can't really say it is or isn't because the whole point is to see if something is wrong or not. He's complaining about how much it will cost and everything when I told him how much it would be to begin with. He's talking about how some doctors just order a bunch of tests to flood you with bills, as if they get anything from that. I feel like crying and I don't feel safe arguing about my personal symptoms and fears. Apparently he's talking with my mom about it, and he hasn't told me to cancel it yet but he also thinks it may be too late to.

I'm scared and I hate this.

another thing i like to think about sometimes is after luis dies and leon puts the lighter into his hand, theres a very faint sniffle or hitch of breath...like hes holding in tears. 😞

despite how much leon has gone through and how used he may be to bioterrorism and such—he's never used to losing people and still wanting to help out.

because chapter 11 was when he was really starting to trust and warm up to luis, despite all of his sarcastic remarks, he was starting to trust him, and he died.

and the same went for krauser too! even though he had lost himself for power and overall kind of being an asshole to leon, after leon killed him and pulled the knife out, he was trying to hold in his tears!!! his bottom lip was trembling!!!

he cares about people so much and i really love that about his character because hes still such a sweetheart no matter what, even if he hides it behind a tough exterior!!

and thats kind of what ada was talking about too, how leon never really changed from his resident evil 2 self, because no matter what he wants to help and save people!!!
