One minor nitpick from the subtitles I'm watching, not just karekatsu, but in a lot of dramas, but I guess it does relate to the show, but why do people sub, especially company-sanctioned subtitles use the first name when we clearly hear the characters say the last name?

For example, we hear Tanaka Kazuhito say "Natsukawa", but the subs either read "Ryo" or "Ryota"

Same with familial terms, we hear the characters say "onii-chan", 'kaa-san", "tou-san", "nee-san" and what not but the subs read the name of the character like for example we hear "nii-san" but the subs read "Ryota"

Why is that?

Why can't you just put the actual translations or the actual words they're saying? I just don't get it.

trying to get back into the shining force series and im slowly crumbling to dust over how insanely hard it is to keep track of vs the draken/nier series like with drakengard its like 1, 2, then you pretend nothing else happened ever again after that BUT you have a couple artbooks and novels on the side but shining force is like shining in the darkness, shining force (okay!), shining force gaiden, shining force gaiden 2, shining force final conflict (related to gaiden but ALSO the og shining force, moreso than the other sfg games) and then

SHINING FORCE 2???????

but shining force gaiden was also a shining force 2, this is just THE shining force 2.... ANYWAYS you'd think "okay, sf3 is after this, right???" SHINING WISDOM, SHINING THE HOLY ARK, THEN SHINING FORCE 3.......... (split into THREE scenarios, which weestern audiences only got one of i believe?) and on top of that you have the 2004 gba remaster of the ORIGINAL shining force which fixes some of the localisation issues with the ORIGINAL genesis release from 1992, and i don't know if there are any artbooks which go further into these games on top of that??? i'll have to check... then after that is the modern shining force games will be honest first person jrpgs are NOT my cup of tea so i dunno how deep i'll get into shining in the darkness/shining wisdom but BOY.... where to even start with this series like, release order obviously, but you know???

Just some thoughts on the new Steam trailers and promo stuff.

I just watched the Steam trailer announcement for the KH series...and they made it really het/S*kai focused. It's very gen/friendship focused as well, but they seriously somehow were even able to make the DDD section of the trailer very not gay and just very gen/friendship based.

The two short KH is on Steam trailers on Utada's YT page are more for promoting the re-recordings of Hikari and Simple & Clean, but they are fairly het/S*kai and general friendship focused as well. Though, Hikari's promo works better with they lyrics, timing, and lyrical meanings than Simple & Clean.

This last bit starts as the titles that are going to be released on Steam start to appear on the screen (there are spinning heart shapes that appear over the image, and those turn into the titles), which turns to a plain black screen and info on the release dates, games, etc.

The Simple & Clean take on this promo is definitely a bit more awkward timing and lyrics-wise. It doesn't work as well, though, both promos don't really highlight the bond between Sora and Riku like at all, but highlight the bond between Sora and Kairi, along with just gen friendships in general (which I like and don't mind).

I don't know. Obviously, they are focusing on the whole series as a whole, which makes sense and the more gen focused stuff for nearly all the characters makes sense and I like and appreciate that. But, it just feels weird to see/have so little of Riku and have the video end with the S*kai stuff, since that relationship is just so underexplored, underdeveloped, and often times just straight up ignored in a lot of the games/Sora's overall journey.

Also, while I'm a fan of Soriku, I don't really care for a number of the big theories out there that exist (some of which, like the whole aitsu thing, has been debunked, and I just find the whole "Sora forgot about Riku" theory to be a theory more so created to cope with the reality that the series is trying to push S*kai more now...even if there are a lot of issues with that from a writing perspective). IDK, but when I see stuff like this...when I played KH3...they all just kind of worked as reminders to keep my expectations in check. I might just be too burned by past media experiences, but a large part of me still believes that the closest we might ever get to canon Soriku is a realization and confirmation on Riku's part that he loves Sora, but S*kai still ends up happening because of "I want my lover to be happy" type trope stuff.

At the very least, I'm happy that we got largely gen and friendship based trailers and promos with all of this, instead of all of the imagery being like "potential het couples" type stuff, lol. But yeah, this is probably an overreaction, but KH3 is a game that really killed my love for the franchise and makes me very hesitant, skeptical, and cynical of KH4 along with the franchise going forward in general. So these promos just don't help at all with that.

Yuuri's VA new song for Yuuri was released! I bought it online, so I still don't know the official lyrics 🤣 and I'm not very good at recognizing sounds that are heavily modulated?... like what he does at the end of words, so it still contains some mistakes, I'm sure.

But the song.... The LYRICS... It really made me cry... 😭😭

I have come to report a great, great thing. Remember your post about “I'm alone right now” not actually existing in the Japanese version of game?

Well, apparently, it does, after all! Just stumbled upon this in my new walkthrough.

Looks like it's in the pool of possible greetings. I'm currently only on the 2nd level of his confidant, idk if that could be connected. Something about that んだけど is so inexplicably suggestive to me, I can't even...

Conclusion: Goro has the capacity to be thirsty for Akira in Japanese just like in the English version.

I've got to say, I don't know if that ima hitori de is as suggestive as the English "I'm alone right now". But it doesn't matter. Because look at the rest of this, lmao.

Look at how much Akechi is hedging here. That n da kedo on the first line of the message is fairly standard, just leading into an invitation—it suggests the listener should reply. Literally, "The thing is [n da], I'm alone, but [...and so I was wondering...]".

We go on into the second line. "... I've ended up [-chatte] with some time to fill, yes?" And then the third: "Only if you want to, couldn't we perhaps meet up and talk a little?"

Listen to him. Most of his text invites are very straightforward; they're nothing at all like this—maybe because this is a generic invite, not linked to a confidant level; you could get it as easily for conf 2 as conf 5, if not higher. His invite to Joker and Yoshizawa on 7/11 is a little like this, but not this much like it.

He has two softening uses of sukoshi ("a little"). He has that nai ka na ("I wonder/what if") on his actual invitation. He repeats that n da kedo from the first line of the message on his invitation ("only if you wanted to, perhaps...")

Idk, it almost sounds kind of feminine? He's being very conciliatory here; he's leaving Joker a lot of room to say no. I feel like this is the Akechi who tries not to put people off in his homeroom by not standing out too much and being Pleasant.

It is, in short, possible to take it as being at least a little bit flirty. And so we get "I'm alone right now."

Edgeworth 設定‥‥？ Settei...? "Decided"…? Shouldn't the parties involved naturally just know…? Established...? (lt: Establishment...?) A lot is added in the ENG. Quite honestly, the first time I experienced this dialogue (in English), I didn't think much of it. I saw it as Edgeworth thinking something like 'How in tarnation don't you know whether you're together ot not?' Shouldn't you know?' That was my own reaction in the first place. I thought it was saying more about Paups' lovesick character than anything else. But the JP with its brevity made me question if that was the original meaning. He sounds confused. Still, I'm not quite sure. I would say in general though, it makes sense that in his mind, you don't have to actually communicate by talking about your feelings. He is pretty bad at it in the first place... communicating what he feels, I mean. He tends to talk around things, he's a bit roundabout. He tries to say 'thank you' to express his gratefulness, doesn't really work, and is far more successful at showing appreciation when he says stuff like 'A man appeared and stood fast against that selfish me' (ending of 2-4), such a thing just works better for him. He's stating the facts, but not his feelings themselves. That man appeared and stood fast -> it's a simple fact. He doesn't say anything about how that made him feel. When he tries, he feels awkward, foolish. Something that doesn't suit him.

Paups お父さんが、天野河さんの 会社で働いていたから‥‥ Otousan ga, Amanogawa-san no kaisha de hatte ita kara... My father used to work for Mr. Amano.

Edgeworth （そんなに、 　恥ずかしがることだろうか？） (Sonna ni, hazukashigaru koto darou ka?) (I don't see how that's anything to be embarrassed about…) Such a thing, is it something to be embarassed about? 'Darou ka' can be translated in many ways. 'I wonder if...' 'is it so', for example. Basically it expresses something akin to uncertainty. EDIT - a correction: 'sonna ni' actually means 'like that, to that extent, so much, to that point, to such a degree' So it can be translated in many ways: (To that point), is it something to be (so) embarassed about? Is it something to be embarassed about to that extent? Is it something to be so embarassed about? This last part is the most hilarious to me. He doesn't think it's something someone should be embarassed about, but he's also kind of uncertain. 'Wait, is it? Is it though? Am I missing something?' Kinda seems like Edgeworth is very confused. 'Should you be embarassed for such a thing? Is it supposed to be embarassing? I wonder if it's an embarassing thing?' And the maybe inner : 'Should I be embarassed about such a thing?' It's probably insignificant beyond showing Edgeworth's apparent obliviousness to other people's feelings and general misunderstanding of how some people perceive and experience romantic relationships, but it did earn a chuckle from me. So I thought I'd share.
