I feel like now is a good time to remind everyone that...

Nonhuman is an umbrella term, but it is also a standalone label.

You do not need to also be otherkin, otherlinker, otherhearted, therian, fictionkin, alterhuman (which itself may be 100% human and nothing else) or anything else to call yourself nonhuman. You can, if you want to, just use it by itself. No qualifiers, no further explanation required, no definition beyond 'not exclusively human in some way.'

You don't need to identify physically as not-human. Plenty of nonhumans do, and plenty more don't.

You don't need to identify entirely as not-human. There are lots of nonhumans that are also human, plus whatever else they are. There are similarly nonhumans who are in no way human. The term encompasses both without contradiction.

You do not need to specify any amount of voluntary/involuntary adoption of your identity. You can in fact choose to just be nonhuman because you want to do that, or you can come to it after a long time searching and conclude it's the only explanation, or you can fall anywhere in between.

You do not need to be any specific thing other than some degree of not-human. You can be an animal, plant, object, concept, song, creature, shapeshifter, character, device, AI, color, emotion, or anything else that exists or doesn't, or any kind of mixture of those things.

You do not need any specific reason to call yourself nonhuman. It can be a psychological thing, a spiritual thing, a physical thing, a coping thing, a reclamation thing, even just a 'because it's fun and makes you happy' thing.

You do not need anybody's permission or approval to be nonhuman. There are no gatekeepers who have any say over what a nonhuman is or is not, aside from the definition of the word itself, which is incredibly broad and open to interpretation. This is by design. Anybody who tries to stop you has no right to do so.

Please don't forget that when defining 'nonhuman.' It is not just a big tarp to be thrown over other labels. It is also its own full identity with its own merits and concepts, even if it is a very broad and inclusive identity.

I think I narrowed myself down to 2 different species of owl!

While I'm not an owl therian, I am fictionkin of an owl demon. I dont think I'm solely one type of owl, but rather some hell-created owl-demon species. However, I have been wondering what species I'm based off of or inspired by. So, here's my theories!

First up is the Sooty owl:

I've known about these guys for a long time, and they're especially close to my heart because they live in my hearthome, Papua New Guinea! They strike me as a potential lead, not just because of their white faces and black bodies, but the white speckles all acorss their bodies. They remind me of the stars, which are very important to me as Stolace. I feel my true home is in the stars with Via, and if we die, we'll be reunited there. Because of that, it just feels right that I'm one of these guys.

My other lead is the African Grass Owl:

I think this one might be a bit more likely due to the fact that this species is unusually tall, and they have that speckled chest and stomach fluff. If you've seen me in a fancy outfit or with my old hat, you've probably seen the black-and-white speckled feathers on it, which looks just like this one. Also, If you look closely at the eyes, you can see the dark patches under them that resemble the same ones I have. Overall, I think this species just looks a lot more like me than the sooty owl, though I don't have that same connection to them.

At the end of the day, I'm just a hellborn (Goetian) demon with no genes from earthborn owls, so I'm not really either of them! But, I do like the idea that I'm a parallel of an earthen owl species, so this was fun to do :>

this body feels so wrong. honestly. i can't wrap myself in my wings when i'm upset and i can't quietly drift through space and sleep in clouds of stardust for eons when i need to rest. i can't perk my ears up and i can't see in the dark. perhaps worst of all is this - no one is frightened by me. i'm supposed to have claws and a smile so awful people flee from the mere sight of it. but i don't. i'm in this soft, fragile human body and i don't know if i'll ever be in my real body again - if i ever even had a life before this one. oh, well. whatever. nevermind.

[The Monitor Theory]

This, my dear fellow friends and strangers, is a Goulds Monitor, also known as Sand Goanna.

It's an absolute Bodentier.

When I first discovered this creature in elementary school I was so very obsessed. The coolest little critter!

And since I have the worst urges to flop down on the ground and crawl around, sadly impossible due to my human anatomy, eat whole eggs, have claws for digging and lay on warm rocks I've decided to read more into it.

There are three subspecies to the Goulds Monitor, the one I have found to be my closest affinity is the V. gouldii gouldii. They live near rivers, mangroves or the seashore and dig holes for themselfs. I cannot express how much this vibes with me.
