People are wild lol rap does actually take a certain level of skill to both perform and understand, it takes five seconds of research to see that theres decent lyricism going on there. Lots of rappers are actually great at english, they dont all know the official terms for the things they practice but rapping is like a form of poetry really.

ofc there are subgenres that i personally do not like such as mumble rap (a conversation for another time i digress) but if you take for example kendrick's latest diss tracks to drake, its something that has to literally be studied and broken down by a bunch of people lol and once you break it down and understand the refrences you see that its not just a bunch of words and a beat. of course white people will think something they dont understand is ghetto trash what else is new lol they're the kings of ostricizing and devaluing what they dont understand. They did it to jazz they did it to metal and alternative music and they do it to rap.

At the end of the day, culture is a thing that will be understood by those who are meant to understand it. You dont have to like rap to acknowledge that its an art, but calling it trash and refusing to see it from any point of view but your own speaks for itself.

And for the record, im not a rap fan lol its a genre i hardly listen to in fact, but what i am is an artist, and i can acknowledge art when i see it.

i'll be honest, i don't think lack of understanding is solely what comes into it, if at all. the genres that get the most aggressive pushback are also ones that threaten a cultural hegdemony in their respective societies (white, male, christian etc) and that's not a coincidence. rap gets the worst of this and ultimately i don't think it has ever boiled down to not knowing what GOAT means and a lot more to do with overt and tacit hostility towards black people making outspoken art on their own terms in a deeply racist society.

but otherwise i completely agree with you! the lyrical complexity, rhyming schemes and dexterity at play in a good rap song is second to none and you could absolutely teach a literature class on it. it is as much a poetic medium as anything else while also encompassing its own deeply layered, complex and distinct sensibilities--just like, literally, every other art form on earth! to pretend otherwise is just ludicrous at this point.

quick reading wrap-up cus i haven't posted any in a whileeee

talking about Odd Girl Out, Merciless Waters, and The Weight of Blood

i finished Odd Girl Out by Ann Bannon and am taking a break before i keep going onto I Am A Woman. i DID like this book, but it comes with heavy caveats... it is very frustrating to read at times because it was written & is set in the 50s. the misogyny in this book is crazyyyy, on an institutional level from the college the girls are attending as well as on a personal level, from every single man we meet (and some of the girls, too). i hated Charlie, i hated reading his POVs where he jumped through hoops to excuse his aggressive behavior towards Beth, and i hated the way their relationship was written. i don't really fault the author for this, again this is just very reflective of the time period, and i do want to give her some credit, because some of it is definitely intentional with the way all 3 of the main relationships parallel each other in the book (beth/charlie, beth/laura, emmy/bud) and i really really liked the ultimate subversions of the typical lesbian pulp tropes at the end. i can really see why these books were so popular and how they would have meant so much to young, closeted lesbians back then.

after that i finally picked up Merciless Waters by Rae Knowles & read it pretty quickly (it's a short read). i go back and forth on this one, it was a blast while i was actively reading it, but if i think too hard about it, there are a lot of like. i don't want to call them plot holes, but just little things that don't really makes sense once you put them under the microscope. i was also a little disappointed in the ending, it felt like a cop-out, and i wish that we had seen more of Lily, considering she's the driving force behind the narrative and the focus of Jaq's obsessive love. that being said Knowles' prose is lovely and it was fun for people who love awful sapphic women (me) i also have Rae Knowles and April Yates' anthology, Scissor Sisters, which i'm hoping to get to later....

then i read The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson cus i was looking for something easy to read. unfortunately i did not like this one..... i'm going to link this review because it honestly says everything i was thinking and i was happy to see it since otherwise this book is very highly rated. it's a retelling of Carrie, which i've never read (i don't like stephen king lol) but i DO like the og movie. and this book is SO derivative, which... yeah, it's a retelling... but it really gave me nothing. it's a shame, because i do think if you were to do a Carrie retelling at this point, this would be the way to approach it. but this book is a swing and a miss. and i could not believe the setting was 2014... of course, there absolutely are racist towns like this even now in 2024, but the time period was really the wrong choice for me, especially because it felt like it was only done so she could give the characters cell phones and twitter, but then she never really used the modern setting to her advantage outside of that. i also hated how much time we spent in the POVs of Maddy's racist bullies. i hated Wendy, i hated every POV from her... she's this books Sue Snell, but honestly worse. i do think her POV added something to the narrative, so i don't think it should have been cut entirely, but it also took way too much time away from Maddy who ultimately had no presence at all in her own story.

Kendrick was honestly the most interesting character with the most compelling POV, due to his own experiences dealing with the racism from his "friends" as well as grappling with his complicity as the "token" Black friend. however, even with Kendrick being the star football player, it didn't make sense to me that he was considered the "most popular guy in school" when said school was SO racist. i get that their interest in him was ultimately just so they could ride his coattails, but there was just a lot of dissonance in this story between just how explicitly racist some of the characters were in some instances but then not in others... i know racism has no rhyme or reason, but this just felt like inconsistent writing rather than anything intentional from the author. i also did not enjoy his romance with Maddy, for the same reasons as the other reviewer, but i'm glad he dumped Wendy for it so i'll take it, i guess.... overall, interesting ideas, but horrible execution. i really wanted to like this one but.... there's also a point where the author chose to name-drop Stephen King, thus implying that he exists in this universe along with all his works (they reference Firestarter in the text) but at no point does anyone say "Hey, isn't this case a lot like Carrie?" and that really broke the immersion for me lmfao

Their cattle were getting sick, soldiers were dying off left and right, women around regions struggled to bear children and carry out through their birthing processes without any emergencies, sometimes situations were too heavy for local hospitals to deal with. It was bad. Centuries ago, when her country, Zoru, was cursed with misfortune by an unknown sorcerer. possibly someone who was shunned for various reasons, the empire still refused to crumble, resisting against the energies formed against it. Zoru thrived and continued to many years later, but that luck was wearing thin by the days.

with Y/N’s father, Zoru’s last king, now dead after fighting battle after battle with their countries own tribes, and losing his last fight, he left her to rule over their country. she had no choice but to scramble and scrape to find resources from the next country over to stop the massacre of her own people. When that curse was placed upon her country, her father made sure to meet up with many leaders across the continent, only one agreeing to go hand and hand with Zoru to stay afloat when the curse caught up. Apparently that time was now.

When Y/N heard about the agreement that was made, she was ecstatic. She could barely hold in sobs of happiness. That until she was told she would have to merge countries, marry the king and birth his children. She bit her tongue as her mother explained this to her, her head hanging lowly as her body began to lose it’s confident posture on the throne. She was devastated. Devastated that she would have to not only leave her own country and share her fortune, but forcefully leave a lover she was already fond of for another she barely knew. She thought she would have time to grieve her losses before she was picked up and taken to Wakanda, but she was wrong.

After meetings with elders and constant pep talks from her mother, she was swept up by Wakanda’s own plane-like vehicle. It was a little more advanced than her Countries aircrafts. She kissed her family goodbye, taking extra time at her fathers alter before she was off to handle business that would change her lifestyle forever. Little did Y/N know, she was in for many, many more surprises. Not only did she not know that Wakanda was no longer under T’Challa’s ruling, and that he was pronounced dead, but it was under a man that was much more cruel than the man that she knew.

Upon her arrival to Wakanda, she noticed things looked a bit different since the last time she had been there, but she brushed it off as just too much time passing by on her part. Though she brushed off that curiosity from earlier, she couldn’t seem to shake the feeling of displeasure as she arrived at the citadel, her guards joining other royal guards to lead her to the room where T’Challa’s throne sat beautifully, but whoever was sitting it it was definitely not T’Challa.

I’d have spoiled the setlist for myself, listened to it ad infinitum till the lyrics were ingrained and my hormones were in equilibrium. But this time I couldn’t wait till the Cali dates, (still going). I had to see Yoongi tonight.

Yoongi is so beautiful.

Yoongi is a rock star, and I mean that in a literal sense. He makes rock music, thinks like a rock star, and sings like a rock star. His live renditions of Amygdala are the perfect example of this. Pairing screamo rock in the chorus with the guitar solos in the outro, everything about Yoongi's vision for that song is centered around liberation, a value that's inherent to a rock star.

I laughed reading all your asks btw. (Anon in ask 6, I see you, I get you, and I don't judge you.) Ranking Agust D's songs is impossible for me. My personal taste is screamo rock and dirty trap or drill, I like songs with distinct percussion, lots of guitars, and/or distortion, voice cracks, autotune, etc. Artists like Nirvana, ONE OK ROCK, Kendrick Lamar, Twenty One Pilots, and Jimin give me bits and pieces of that sound, but no one in BTS knows how to scratch that itch for me better than Yoongi.

He’s just the right kind of insane to speak my language.

The duality that shimmers around Jimin like a mirage and is central to his magnetism, where you can’t be sure of who, what, exactly you’re looking at - man, woman, child, king, snake, panther, cat, metal, silk, fire, ice - all in one. That duality, lives in Yoongi’s music.

It’s elsewhere too, but it lives in his music. Even underneath all of that, he just makes some of the best music around.

That beat change at the end of Shadow? That's music tailor-made for me. Cypher Pt 3, AGUST D (the song), What Do You Think?, Trivia: Seesaw, the live performances of HUH?! and Amygdala are a revelation. All his music sounds perfectly made for me.

I honestly have no choice but to love him.

This song is criminally underrated. I mean it's a crime more people aren't screaming from the rooftops about how crisp this track is. Listening to 724148 was the first time it really hit me how brilliant Yoongi is as a producer.

So Far Away ft Suran

You need to listen to this song on good speakers. It will change your life for the better. Do that, then come back here and tell me how you feel.

Burn It ft MAX

You know, when I heard the live performance of this song, I called a friend to help me re-calibrate my speakers. To recreate that feel. The production on the song is insane. Not to mention Yoongi's flow in the second verse.

Amygdala

The guitars are placed and layered perfectly. I love how forward the drums are in the mix. The autotune is one of my favourite things about it too. The entire song is perfect.

Daechwita

Am I the only person who hears the same static in the song intro that continues faintly in the foreground for the entirety of the song? As though you're entering a glitch. It's so sick. The main/central beat doesn't vary much, all the texture comes from Yoongi's adlibs. And he does an excellent job elevating it to something more.

Flow / Delivery

You've all seen me go on and on about Jimin's vocals. About how much Jimin's voice is the catalyst for ecstasy when I listen to BTS's music. But Yoongi's voice affects me just as strongly, if not more, in a very different way.

I’m a sucker for the kitten. That insane high pitched thing he does drives me to the limits of my sanity. But he’s also a natural baritone. A nasty one at that. You can hear it in the music he makes. And that’s my kryptonite.

I just saw him lose his mind with happiness at the ARMY who disguised her iPhone as a Samsung. That wide smile on his face is still replaying in my head. alright so i was legit taken aback by his voice in Kings Dead because effects and filters and whatnot aside his voice sounds like BROKEN GLASS. its so crazy interesting to me how does he do that. hes giving me synesthesia like what.

he sometimes increases his accent and it feels like gravity tripled in force. when he hits that put the wrong label on me flow in not like us i scrunch into a little ball like crunched paper.

OH OH ok so in his older songs kendrick mostly raps in that nasally voice or just normal but when you watch interviews he SPEAKS in this voice i can only describe as a chainsmoking air conditioner, its both deep and cold (?) and the examples in songs would be backstreet freestyle or fuckin problems verse. love that voice. i imagine he was pushing his voice into that because its not like that anymore but damn its got such dimension, coming straight from his chest.

OH H OH FUCKK one of my favorites is also The Recipe voice, kendrick hits that one aggressive flow and SOUNDS like his voice is trying to beat the shit out of you. ladies its not my fault that its 80 degrees and my top peeled off. damn he sounds so hot in that yeeesh.

Artists of the Month (July 2024) ⭐

1. Pearl Jam

So, since July was mostly me revisiting discographies to rank them, it kind of came down to which of my favorite (top 25) artists have more albums. And yes... Pearl Jam has many albums, and they're one of my favorite artists sooo... 😅

You'll see it whenever I post my Pearl Jam masterpost, but... So far, Pearl Jam is the only artist I've given two 10/10 😁💖💖

Ten and Vitalogy are the two 10/10s albums, and I have no doubt about their rankings, those two mean so much to me, and revisiting them wasn't just nostalgic, but also the music itself is just amazing so yeah 😭💕

As for individual tracks... "Rearviewmirror", "Comatose" and "Spin The Black Circle" were constantly in rotation lol ♥️

2. Nine Inch Nails

Same thing with NIN, heard their discography, and many albums so, alas, here they are 😁😂♥️

Of course, I gave The Downward Spiral a 10/10 because wow what an album. And, The Fragile was pretty damn close too, gave it a 9.5/10 (ngl actually considering if it should be a 10/10 too 😅💖)

And as for individual tracks, I played "Please", "Ruiner" and "Less Than" a lot 💕💕

3. Kendrick Lamar

Okay, this one is interesting... As I ranted about on my last post, I base my AOTM posts on YT Music, and uhhh yeah YT loves Kendrick it seems. 😗

Not to say I didn't listen to Kendrick at all, of course I listened to him a lot as I usually do, but YT kinda pushed it showing "Count Me Out" and "Not Like Us" on my most played all month long. Which, no, not accurate, but sure let's go with that YT lol. 😐😭

In reality, I think my most played Kendrick Lamar songs were "DNA.", "N95", "euphoria" and "King Kunta". 😅♥️

4. Bring Me The Horizon

Okay, back to discographies. 🙂😂

BMTH has an amazing discography, really hard to ever argue that. And hearing all of their albums again was, just as it was with Pearl Jam, nostalgic and awesome 😭💖💖

The highest rated albums I heard, both 9.5/10, were There Is A Hell and the newest Post Human, both just amazing all around ♥️

And individual tracks, I replayed "Top 10 staTues tHat criEd bloOd" and "Fuck" a lot 😁♥️💕

5. A Day To Remember

Another amazing band's amazing discography 💕

Highest rated albums (both 9.5/10) were For Those Who Have Heart and Homesick, both absolute classics 🥹💖💖

And the ADTR songs I had on repeat, among others, were "A Shot In The Dark", "Mr. Highway's Thinking About The End" and "You Be Tails, I'll Be Sonic". Yes I'm a sucker for metalcore ADTR 😭♥️♥️
