Back to Business

Normal service is resumed this week after the International break and for North End it is three games in six days starting on Saturday. Cardiff City are the visitors to Deepdale at the weekend with a game at the Riverside against Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening. We then play QPR in front of the cameras at Deepdale next Friday evening and we will focus more on that game next week. North End sit fifth in the Championship table, as the season resumes in anger, having won eight, drawn four and lost four of the sixteen games played so far. The quirky way the points have been collected is leaving some North End fans wondering if the table reflects our place in the table accurately. Nevertheless North End go into the weekend on the back of two wins and these nine games before the end of the year will have a very big bearing on the end of season outcome.

Saturday sees the Bluebirds visit Deepdale and the return to Deepdale of an old favourite in Callum Robinson. Cardiff sit ninth in the table but just four points behind North End. The have won seven, drawn three and lost six of their sixteen games but have scored more goals than North End and conceded fewer. Away from home they have won two and drawn two of their eight games so far and I think North End will be reasonably confident going into the game with, hopefully, the boys who have been on international duty coming back unscathed. Kion Etete is the Bluebirds leading scorer with five while ex North Ender Robinson has managed three so far this season. Erol Bilut has had a decent start to his tenure and I expect a good quality encounter at the weekend.

Following on from the Cardiff game we travel to Tees-side on Tuesday evening for a game against Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough. On our last visit we suffered a nasty 0-4 reverse on Gentry Day last season although the Boro side does not quite look as strong on paper as the team we played back in the Spring. The Smoggies have an identical record to that of Cardiff 7=3=6 but I noted that Middlesbrough have lost three of their eight home games this season so the Riverside may not be quite such a daunting prospect as people think. Their goalscorers are well spread and North End will have to be at their best to claim something from the game. I think four points would be a good return from these two fixtures and would keep North End in the play off places with one or two easier games on the horizon

And finally this week:- it was a weekend of some sufferance watching England labour against Malta and only draw against North Macedonia. Still it is job done with England winning the group and going into pot 1 for the Euros next Summer in Germany. However there is a word of warning and with Holland in pot 3 and Italy in pot 4 a group of death could look like this - England - Denmark - Netherlands - Italy. Yikes!

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has said that he wants the summer transfer window for English clubs to stay open longer, calling the decision to close it before the start of the Premier League season a “massive mistake.”

As of last season, the summer transfer window in England has closed before the Premier League season began due to complaints by clubs of having unsettled squads when starting the campaign. But with transfer windows around Europe closing as late as September, Premier League players, including Spurs star midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is a target for Real Madrid, could still move.

“I wasn’t in agreement [with the decision] but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs,” Pochettino said. “But I think he [Daniel Levy] and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake. I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

“We need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League.

“Champions League teams can create a problem for a team like us and it’s so clear that I cannot be happy as a coach that in the last three weeks clubs from Europe can unsettle your team.

“For me it’s not common sense and we need to go back quick, hope they have a good conversation at the Premier League and go back quickly [to how it was].”

The window for English clubs to sign players closed on Aug. 8 but, in Spain, it remains open until Sept. 2. Should Eriksen leave the club, Spurs would not be able to sign a replacement for the until Jan 1. when the winter transfer window re-opens.

Eriksen started in Spurs’ 2-2 draw to Manchester City on Saturday and was substituted in the 92nd minute for 18-year-old midfielder Oliver Skipp.

Spurs signed midfielder Giovani Lo Celso on loan from Real Betis on the final day of the English transfer window along with Fullham left-back Ryan Sessegnon for £25 million. They also signed Tanguy Ndombele for a club-record £56.5m plus add-ons, as well as Jack Clarke from Leeds and Kion Etete from Notts County.
