shoujo ga himeta omoi DEKU wa--...
The girl's hidden feelings, and as for Deku--...
specifically, let's look at how noda-sensei added a bunch of lines to the scene where ogata hyakunosuke kills his father. i have included the pages in question here for your reference. he added quite a lot of dialogue. the anime goes by the volume version of the manga, so i believe most of these lines were spoken verbatim in the anime, but japanese is so full of homophones that it can be hard to learn new words just by listening. so let's read.
this is not the beginning of the scene, but this is where the dialogue additions begin. i wanted to make a post about this because EH scans never covered these lines-- at this point in the story, they were using magazine scans, not volume scans. as far as i know, only viz and various anime subs have translated this part. and i don't think viz did a very good job. so i wanted to put my translation out there for people who want to waste even more time thinking about ogata hyakunosuke and what he Really Said. but i'm not going to bother with a typeset version of just 5 pages. and i'm not going to go find this scene in the anime to compare the translation of the subs. and keep in mind that i'm a novice.
here are the lines in order, starting at the top of the first page. yes i really typed out and analyzed them one by one like this. (i typed them out so you can copy-paste the kanji to look them up if you want... i hate having to look up kanji radical by radical...) a slash indicates a split in a compound speech bubble. these slashes may or may not indicate the end of a sentence. (japanese uses punctuation sparsely and you have to kind of feel out where the sentence ends sometimes, so speech bubble breaks are worth noting.)
raw: å ¥éããŠåããŠäŒããŸããã / é¢ãããããŸããã
phonetic: nyuutai shite hajimete aimashita ga / men wo kuraimashita yo
my translation: I met him for the first time when I enlisted, / and I was taken aback.
viz's translation: I met him when I joined the military⊠/ âŠand I was stunned.
notes: it seems the usual way of phrasing "men wo kuraimashita" would be more like "menkurau" so the "wo" stuck in there confused me... anyway it means "taken aback" or "bewildered."
raw: ãèŠåŸãããã¿ãŸãããããšäœåºŠæ³šæããŠãéšäžã®ä¿ºã⊠/ ãå æ§ããšåŒã¶ã®ã§ã

my translation: Even though I warned him many times that it would "weaken his discipline," / he called me, his subordinate, "big brother."
viz's translation: I warned him that it was bad for discipline⊠/ âŠbut he called me his big brother.
notes: i think it's notable that ogata refers to himself as yuusaku's subordinate ("buka"). that was omitted by the viz translation, probably in the name of dumbing it down clarity. the fact that yuusaku outranked hyakunosuke is really important to the relationship between them. obviously it made hyakunosuke feel even worse about himself, but he hides that.
raw: ãã²ãšãã£åè²ã¡ã§ãã£ãšå åŒã欲ããã£ãããš / 俺ã«ãŸãšããä»ãã®ã§ã

my translation: He said, "I was raised an only child, so I always wanted a brother," / and he clung to me.
viz's translation: He'd always wanted a brother⊠/ âŠso he clung to me.
notes: matowaritsuku, "to coil about; to follow about; to surround; to cling to." maybe this line was added just to be heartbreaking.
raw: ãã®å±èšã®ç¡ãç¬é¡âŠâŠ
phonetic: ano kuttaku no nai egao......
my translation: That carefree smile......
viz's translation: He had an honest smile.
notes: kuttaku no nai means carefree, and it doesn't mean honest. don't make a mistranslation and then bold it. they bolded it! isn't that embarrassing? also they vaporized the powerful double ellipsis. lame.
raw: ãããããã䞡芪ããç¥çŠãããŠçãŸããåäŸãªã®ã âŠâŠããš / å¿åºçŽåŸããŸãã

my translation: "Ah, so this is a child who was blessed from birth by both parentsâŠâŠ" / I accepted that deep in my heart.
viz's translation: I realized deep inside that here was a child blessed with the love⊠/ âŠof both parents.
notes: nattoku "understanding; satisfaction (e.g. with an explanation); being convincedâ." so seeing yuusaku's carefree smile and affectionate behavior, ogata took that as evidence affirming his theory about being born blessed; he accepted that yuusaku was blessed and took it to prove that he, by comparison, must not have been blessed.
raw: 俺ãåŸé éšãæã¡æããŸãã
phonetic: ore ga koutoubu wo uchinukimashita
my translation: I shot him through the back of the head.
viz's translation: I plugged him in the back of the head.
notes: listening to this line in the anime, i was chilled by how ogata conjugated the nasty verb "uchinuku" (to shoot through) with the polite verb ending "mashita." he's using mostly polite speech to speak to his father in this scene, despite everything. so that's one reason i don't like how viz used the nasty slang term "plugged" here. yes, both lines are nasty, but the politeness is what is striking.
raw: å°å°æ®¿ã«å¯Ÿãã劬ã¿ãããããããŸãã / ç¶äžãèŠããŸãããâŠãšããã®ãšãã¡ãã£ãšéã / ãã ã²ãšã€ç¢ºãããŠã¿ããã£ã

my translation: It wasn't because I held any jealousy toward the second lieutenant. And it wasn't quite⊠that I wanted to make you suffer, father. There was just one thing I wanted to check.
viz's translation: Not because I was jealous⊠/ âŠor because I wanted to make you suffer. / I wanted to check something.
notes: based on the way he said it, i think he did want to make his father suffer just a little. he said it was only chotto chigau.

phonetic: chichiue ha ore wo omotta no ka... / mushi shitsuzuketa mekake no musuko ga kyuu ni itooshikunatta no de ha nai ka to...
my translation: Did you think of me, father? / I thought you might suddenly come to love your long-ignored son of a mistress...
viz's translation: âŠdid you think of me? / Did you suddenly feel for the son you had ignored?
notes: the phrase "itooshikunatta" is key here. it's from itooshii æããã, "lovely; dear; beloved; darling; dearest," and the "natta" is "became." so it's along the lines of "suddenly became beloved" or "suddenly became dear to you." also he uses the past tense verb "omotta" (thought) but instead of the usual æ kanji, he uses æ³, which jisho.org says "has connotations of heart-felt."
raw: ç¥çŠãããéã俺ã«ããã£ãã®ãâŠ
phonetic: shukufuku sareta michi ga ore ni mo atta no ka...
my translation: Was there ever a blessed path for me, too?
viz's translation: Was a blessed life ever even possible for me?
notes: it's "path" in the metaphorical sense, as in the path you take in life. so translating it as a "blessed life" is acceptable here. and the "too" is probably referring to yuusaku, the blessed child.
now here is something worth noting. hanazawa's last words in this world were changed! well, you'd know if you watched the anime, but anyway, instead of the magazine version, "貎æ§ã®èšããšãã,å·è¡ã§åºæ¥æãªãã®å ãã" (It is as you say; you are a cold-blooded and worthless son) it becomes as follows:
raw: 貎æ§ã®èšããšããäœããæ¬ ãã人é⊠/ åºæ¥æãªãã®å ãã // åªããã
phonetic: kisama no iu toori nanika ga kaketa ningen... / dekisokonai no segare ja // norowarero
my translation: It is as you say; you are missing something as a person⊠/ You are a worthless son. // A curse upon you.
viz's translation: You're right. You are missing something. / You're a rotten son⊠// âŠand I curse the day you were born!
notes: the phrase "dekisokonai" is really cutting. it means, according to jisho.org, "failure; defective article; dead loss; botchâ; good-for-nothing; worthless person; flopâ." so "worthless" might be an understatement. what it doesn't mean is "rotten," but i digress. the phrase "reiketsu" (å·è¡, literally and figuratively "cold-blooded") was removed and replaced with the clause about missing something as a person. hanazawa's very last word, and this was added in the volume version as a new speech bubble, is literally "be cursed" (a command). i thought it could've used an exclamation point, but maybe hanazawa didn't have it in him.
the face that hyakunosuke makes immediately after his father's last words was also added in the volume version. what a treat!
i've been reading through the raws and analyzing them like this for a few weeks now. i mean i don't type them all up like this, but i do try to give the more interesting lines a deep read and try to learn a bunch of kanji while i'm at it. there's nothing like trying to read raw manga to make you feel like your 650-day duolingo streak is actually fuuucking worthless. so i'll make more translation notes posts in the future with some interesting lines that may have been translated strangely or incorrectly. specifically i might make a post similar to this one when i get to some more scenes about hyakunosuke and yuusaku (because i think lines were added in later scenes too) and his long talk with usami (where lines were also added). and maybe some scenes with tsukishima and koito. we'll see how long my hyperfixation lasts.
i guess i'll note that the phonetic transliteration of each line is based on my own arbitrary standards and not on any actual standard of writing out romaji (e.g. i tried to put spaces between words... mostly? i typed "wa" as "ha" when it's written with a "ha" hiragana, for no reason in particular... etc.). sorry if it's confusing.
A Star to Steer Her By is continuing on our diplomatic conference Whoâs Who in Starfleet with the Enterprise-Dâs bearded dynamo, Commander William T. Riker. Heâs The Next Generationâs answer to the Captain Kirk character, but with possibly more manwhoring around and he leaves the actual leadership to Captain Picard. Ya know, so he can do more manwhoring!
But of course, Will Riker is so much more than a pretty beard. So swing your leg over the back of that chair and have a seat as we focus on Picardâs number one (and we donât mean the dog). Some of our favorite and least favorite Riker moments are outlined below and you can listen to this weekâs podcast episode (jump to 1:05:52) for the full discussion. Shields up! Rrrrrrred alert!
Guess Iâll go eat worms
Whoops, I was wrong on the podcast when I said Riker ate the mealworms in âConspiracyâ (I was probably thinking of the next item on this list); heâs about to take a big bite before he turns the tables on the baddies. But he still does get to pretend to be mind-controlled by the bug monster, infiltrate the admiralsâ dinner, and then utterly explode Remmick and the queen bug!
Gagh is always best when served live
Now in âA Matter of Honor,â Riker does get to eat some gagh when heâs on the officer exchange program with the Klingon ship. And he really takes charge while heâs serving aboard the IKS Pagh, punching the biggest brute in the room, making eyes at all their women, and challenging Captain Kargan all while upholding Klingon customs to a T.
Pinocchio is broken. Its strings have been cut.
Ignoring that Phillipa Louvois put Riker in a situation that could have been avoided if they had an actual attorney represent Bruce Maddox in Dataâs sapience trial in âThe Measure of a Man,â Riker actually does a pretty good job lawyering. But what really does well for his character is the final scene where he is lamenting how close he got to getting Data dissected, and thatâs lovely.
The illegal move, hachidan kiritsu
We discussed a little bit how shitty a father Kyle Riker was to Will in our Parents blogpost, but weâve got to give the younger Riker some credit for figuring out that daddy has been cheating him for years and years in anbo-jyutsu in âThe Icarus Factor,â overcoming the influence that heâs had over his life, and making the decision for himself to stay on the Enterprise.
Mr. Worf, fire
Not only does âThe Best of Both Worldsâ introduce us to Picard as Locutus, in all his glory and defeat, but we also finally get a taste of what Riker would be like as a captain. Heâs been dodging getting his own ship for years now, and itâs rather surprising since we see that he can make the difficult decisions when he needs to, in this case firing on his own Borgified captain.
You don't have to be alone anymore
We also see in several episodes on our list that Riker tends to get abducted an awful lot, and he figures out the respective ruses pretty smartly! In this case, in âFuture Imperfect,â thereâs practically a multi-part escape room for him to solve, and at the center of it is an abandoned young orphan who was one of the better children we discussed in our Kiddos post!
Star Trek says LGBTQ rights!
Youâll see when you move on to our naughty Riker moments that a lot of his shitty relationships made the cut, but an actually meaningful and progressive relationship comes out of âThe Outcast.â It was very moving watching Riker stand up for Soren, the J'naii scientist who just wanted to express the gender she identified as, which makes the episodeâs resolution all the more heartbreaking.
Computer, create table
Donât worry, this wonât be the last time Riker gets abducted by aliens and deduces his way out of the problem. In âSchisms,â many crewmembers have been getting stolen away and experimented upon in their sleep, but Riker (with help from the holodeckâs renowned table program) goes in mostly conscious, saves a crewmember, and escapes. Now itâs time for a well-deserved nap!
Don't let them tell you you're crazy
We have one final alien abduction in this list because we have to include the absolutely phenomenal âFrame of Mindâ! Jonathan Frakes acts his ass off in this mindfuck of an episode, alternating between screaming about hallucinating things to actually hallucinating things. When he finally figures out that heâs being experimented upon yet again, it feels like a triumph.
Play âNight Birdâ!
For all intents and purposes, Tom Riker is the same entity as Will Riker, so weâll include his great moment in this list as well! Weâve got to give him credit in âSecond Chancesâ for staying sane while abandoned for eight years on Nervala IV, which is a feat unto itself. So itâs just gravy that he also finally mastered playing âNight Birdâ on the trombone and creating some fine phaser art!
I think the resemblance is rather striking
Weâve got a couple of moments from âThe Pegasusâ to recount to you, on both batches of lists, so letâs start off with how cute it was for Riker to be so into celebrating Captain Picard Day! Itâs just a delightful little exchange that shows the admiration that the first officer has for his captain. Imagine how fun Commander Riker Day must be!
It was wrong twelve years ago, and it is wrong today
Riker impresses us throughout the rest of âThe Pegasusâ by turning against one of Jakeâs Corrupt Admirals, Eric Pressman, who is planning on using a phased cloaking device, utterly violating the Treaty of Algeron. Itâs a great little character arc watching Rikerâs guilt trip from having taken Pressmanâs side years go to watching him defy orders to be on the side of whatâs right!
â
Worst moments
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
The Troi-Riker relationship throughout a lot of TNG was a bit confused and inconsistent, especially in the early episode âHavenâ when Troiâs arranged marriage pops up. Riker is suddenly super jealous all episode long, moping about, whining at Troi, being mean to Wyatt, the works. Dude, you had your chance. And dude, sheâs not pleased about it either! Chill out!
Taking mansplaining to another level
Have we ever had a take on a matriarchal planet that wasnât just plain sexist? Thatâs definitely on display in âAngel Oneâ when all the Elected One of the society needs to see the errors of her peopleâs ways is for Riker to swoop in, take her to bed, and then have him take charge in that manly way of his. Why couldnât this have been a job for Troi? Or Bev? Or Yar?
I donât mean to be indelicate. But whoâs the father?!
Speaking of Troi (but not Yar because she was dead by this point), that weird relationship between Imzadis gets weirder in âThe Childâ when Troi gets knocked up by a lightning bug. And Riker, in full crazy ex-boyfriend mode, gets on her case about who the father is, and then starts trying to make decisions for Troi about the fate of her child.Â
You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs
This is just a small detail we like to harp on, and thatâs that Riker is supposedly making omelets for everyone at the top of âTime Squaredâ but what he actually makes are scrambled eggs. And not even good scrambled eggs! And evidently his cooking never gets better later in life, as weâre forced to watch him burn a pizza in âNepentheâ in the series Picard as well!
One William Riker is unique, perhaps even special
Oh boy, weâve already talked a little bit about how problematic âUp the Long Ladderâ is in our Picard post, but itâs more messed up than that. The Mariposans end up stealing DNA from Riker and Pulaski, and Riker is so enraged by this that he murders the clones that are created without any discussion first. Pretty much everything about this episode is a travesty though.
Always look before you leap
I just think this oneâs kinda funny but worth including if only for how dumb it is that Riker gets snared by some kind of trap Kevin Uxbridge set in âThe Survivors.â A dangling Will Riker is just so goofy and ridiculous that I wanted to rewatch that scene a couple of times to laugh at what a buffoon this scene made of him.
I've always wanted to make love with an alien
So itâs pretty much implied that Riker bangs Lanel in the episode âFirst Contactâ (not to be confused with the movie First Contact), right? Iâve said it to Nicolai Rozhenko and Iâll say it again: No sleeping with primitive people youâre observing while under cover, no matter the circumstances! No matter how thirsty she is! No matter what sheâs offering in return! No!
You will follow Starfleet uniform code aboard this ship, Ensign
You rarely see hardass Riker come out and itâs really inconsistent when he does. So it practically comes out of nowhere when he suddenly orders Ro to take out her Bajoran earring in âEnsign Roâ even though itâs a part of her culture. No one makes Worf take off his baldric. And itâs not until Captain Jellico demands it that Troi has to get out of her damn pajamas.
Let's drop the ranks for a moment
Speaking of my man Jellico! Riker not only acts insubordinate to Picardâs replacement during âChain of Command,â he just comes off as a whiny little bitch the whole time because Jellico does this differently than Picard. And Jellico has to come begging this petulant brat to pilot a shuttlecraft. Do your damn job, Riker. Youâd never act like this to Picard.
Mutiny on the Pegasus
On the flip side, Riker had no problem following orders like a little sheep when he served with Pressman. Sure, he makes up for it later as we described above in âThe Pegasus,â but first Riker sided with the obviously wrong and dangerous Captain Pressman, effectively sentencing every mutineer on the ship to a horrible death. Grapple with that, Riker. Oh, you already did.
Smooth as an android's bottom
Itâd be kind to just call Insurrection extremely uneven. On the one hand, we get great speechifying from Picard, as we mentioned last week. But on the other hand, the fountain of youth jokes and the failure to explore whatever the hell was happening with time are just as groan inducing as watching Riker shave off his magnificent beard because he was feeling horny.
Full-beard Riker > Goatee Riker
Because weâve already decided Tom Riker is fair game, letâs give the transporter duplicate a little bit of guff when he appears in the Deep Space Nine episode âDefiant.â Just⊠what the hell was his plan? Steal the Defiant for the Maquis⊠and then what? Kill Kira? Kiss Kira? Make up your damn mind! Iâm glad this idiot is stuck in the Cardassian mines for life.
â
Itâs time to put our trombones away now until the next time someone requests a recital of âNight Bird.â Join us next week as we have more TNG crewmembers to analyze, specifically the fan favorite yellow-eyed android of the show. Weâre also still fighting our way through Enterprise over on the podcast side of things, so keep up with our warp-five watch through over on SoundCloud or your favorite podthing, beam on over to Facebook and Twitter, and toot toot toot!
Random fate ramble but you know what I realllly like that type moon does.
How they handle the aspects of morality and in particular how it's a spectrum not black and white.
You have this displayed through out many series but I'll use Emiya(Archer) as an example cause honestly his morals and stances appears in a ton of different series in fate so many points to refer to(I am also a man who has consumed many of said forms with this man as a simp)
But you have Shirou and well archer both are a form of the same person with their life that was built on top of the simple idea of helping and saving others. A selfish dream one that archer himself calls out on in cases.
You have shirou do all the things one would deem as morally right he's a people first kind of guy because that's what he believes what he has to do he has to live up to the legacy of kiritsu which man I could ramble on that whole aspect of morality and role models but that's another 2am ramble for y'all another time.
But on the flip side you see Archer a man who does anything to gwy the job done is the definition to the onlooker of morality is dead a job is a job. Now Nasu is no coward and bad writer and archers morals is noooot at all that simple. Like any human being he has a reason for acting like such and is doing what he thinks he is the right action to end his own suffering. But the kicker is that in the case of most routes by the end he realizes that oh that's the reason I and another version of his past self was doing what he was doing. He's a character that just became burnt down and broken over time and he realizes that his ideal while selfish isn't one without worth that this shirou is his own person and has very much shown him a part of himself he forgotten as he became a counter guardian.
Anyways what I'm trying to word and I could continue but I geniunly don't think people want to on one part of a post read a 3k word ramble on the morals and actions of a group of the same person and how morals are something complicated and difficult to write and nasu does a good job at showing that conflict and not having distinct lines but also havjbg clear good and bad in characters but not having it completely clear cut that evil is evil but focuses more on x is in this case doing something bad. It's around ones actions cause if it was simply in say some routes ah yes kotomine this man in basic means isn't an antagonist but he sure as hell is NOT a good man. He has his things that benefit the others in a positive way yes. But he is still a bastard of a man that is by no means a hero.
I would also love to ramble on Gil in the case of many pieces of fate and how he's a great display of how a being cannot be defined by one situation and one's morals and decisions aren't clear cut but convoluted but I'll make that separate
Hereâs the basic description stuff for the (current) rest of the AE cast!
Shiruku: Potentially the 4th main human character, and a mammal (specifically bat and flying squirrel) and insect (specifically various bees and moths) chimera. Sheâs very shy and quiet, but also imaginative, optimistic, curious, and somewhat sassy.
Kiritsu: The willowdrake character, and probably the most fleshed out non human sophont character aside from Higure. Heâs brooding, emotional, and melancholic, on top of being quite withdrawn and having a bit of an attitude. However, heâs also extremely selfless, and is generally very kindhearted.
Oto: Jei and Higureâs long standing best friend, and also the moonsprite character. Very energetic, and a bit impulsive, but also very upbeat, kindhearted, clever, and positive.
Ramak: Newest character of the bunch, and a lizard - crocodilian chimera. Heâs got a complicated relationship with Jei (to do an extreme TLDR he was ex friends with her for a while after a lot of tension and drama hit a tipping point, but they do eventually make up and he joins the squad properly). Heâs snarky, shrewd, somewhat hot tempered, mettlesome, and quite reckless, and can come off as a bit proud, but in actuality he has considerable self esteem issues and is quite kindhearted.
Shimo: Warrendwarf character. Generally very kindhearted, but also sorta gruff and eccentric. Probably the most WIP out of the rest of the cast atm.
Not quite in the same format as the stuff done for the main three + Higure, and a bit simplified, but it still works well enough. Some of the personality stuff for the main three themselves will likely be covered in depth soon. Will also probably dive into the general story stuff as well alongside that.
