The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) is one of the most common flycatchers around here. This one is male, in its black and white plumage. The female is brown and white. The males are easy to identify, since at least I can’t think of any other small black and white birds here, if you don’t count white wagtail, which is very distinctive. Pied flycatchers are also a common sight in gardens and readily nest in birdhouses.
