Little kitchen altar for Frigga. I moved her statue to the window above the kitchen sink recently, and it's slowly coming together and getting some life into it.
Next to her is a mini cinnamon broom on one side and some tea and the stubby second cuts that got combed out of the wool I'm spinning. My main home altar is for Hel and the ancestors, and it's been interesting to see how the offerings take differently. With Hel, things are left for days at a time. They dry up and go stale and maybe start to rot. With Frigga I'll make her some tea, and it needs to be poured out the next day and made fresh. She wants her space tidy and her offerings changed out promptly. Seriously thinking that when I get this batch of wool all spun up I'll be making something fine and lacey for her. Maybe a little curtain for the window to give her a backdrop.

Self Altar
That's right, I have an altar to myself.
Tumblr media
Arrogant? Um, have you fucking met me?
I kid. I don't think this is arrogant at all. All people have a spark of the Divine within them. Were we not created by Gods? What is so wrong with honoring that?
Self altars are a meditative device. A self care device. A self love device.
Tumblr media
Mine is on the bookshelf that holds my altars to Hestia and Athena above it, and my magical books below it. It is to the side of my work desk, so I'm next to it all day long. It isn't just my icon. My altar contains
My planner
My shadow work journal
My prayer journal
My general spiritual journal
Various crystals
Religious iconography
An incense burner
Rose water for my face
A trivet to hold my teapot
A blessing from my friend
And my Tiara of the Year
It reminds me that I am not just a worker bee, a mindless drone for capitalistic greed. I am a person, worthy of care and love, even from myself. And let me tell you, I have struggled so hard with loving myself. So I love myself and I take care of myself in practical ways using my altar as a tool.
You should get one.

Annual Samhain Dinner
We set up our ancestral altar/ofrenda yesterday - I love that this has become a tradition for our family, one that our 7-year old daughter brings up and is just normal for her to do. I find it so meaningful. A family friend’s dog passed away recently, and she asked if we could put his picture on our ofrenda. Before dinner we read a couple prayers from the Samhain book in the Llewelyn Sabbath Essentials series, this one by Diana Rajchel.
Tonight’s dinner consisted of:
Tossed salad
Biscuits
Hard cider (for me)
Oven roasted purple sweet potatoes*
Pumpkin & vegetable stew**
*I didn’t even know these were a thing until I saw them in the grocery store - I’m not even sure if they’re yams or sweet potatoes or what but they are purple on the inside and really yummy. We roasted them with garlic, rosemary, sage, thyme, salt/pepper and olive oil
**Stew made with pumpkin, red-skinned potatoes, carrots, caramelized onions, garlic, and a bit of seasoning - usually we use vegetable bouillon but we ran out
Have a blessed Samhain

You write prices with so well with so much detail and knowledge about everything. Are you a witch too/do you work with similar practices? :0 Or are you just doing a lot of research, LOL
I am a lapsed witch I guess. Although I never really vibed with any of the descriptors for paganism and witchcraft. I've always been very casual with my worship which has made me hesitant to claim the title of witch, but I have a deep love for herbalism and folk magic. I do a lot of research and have picked up a lot of things in the decade or so that I've been practicing.
But I also invent a lot for Witch's magic specifically. That's why I usually put "do not attempt" disclaimers on fics that have her doing spellwork in them. Witch's herbalism is rooted in traditional USA folk practices, but she also does a lot of quick "stilt" magic, where the ingredients for her spell are more to prop up the weight of her magic than doing any work themselves. I try to balance the fantastical nature of the au's magic with more familiar practices from our world, so everything feels more grounded.
I've said it before but I wrote my senior thesis(one of them) on Hoodoo folk magick and the differences in its birth compared to other American folk magic traditions. (plus spells, rootwork, and curio associations. Which it why Witch's magic is so folk based)
tl;dr I do practice witchcraft, but I don't call myself a witch. Other people call me a witch, but I don't think witches would call me a witch.

My little kitchen shrine. I got rechargeable batteries for my little light so my "hearth fire" can be an ever-burning fire.
In Germany and parts of the Netherlands a statue or poppet of a witch is placed in the kitchen for protection. This little figurine was a gift from my father years and years ago. ♡
