The delivery and even lines themselves were DEFINITELY very flirty between Buck and Tommy, I'm not denying that, but it's the fact that somehow the kitchen scene was still flirtier. Buck mentioned Eddie like 3 times while flirting with Tommy, including a direct compliment to him, then we have "I could take you" what is that
(let alone "wanna go for the title" with 0 context of video games provided is just plain confusing)

Conspiracy goggles on? Check!
Curious that the name "Tommy" comes from Thomas which means
"twin", "alike-looking man"
Interesting to bring back this man into an episode which was all about jealousy, focused on the things that Eddie and Tommy have in common... And was pretty clearly titled after the song Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - and the lyrics mention "an imposter".
His last name "Kinard" is also interesting but feels harder to unpack so I won't really dive into that. Can't find a clear consensus on the origin/meaning of the name, but one suggestion was "high place", which is funny to me whenever I think about Tommy telling Buck that he'll take him "up" if Buck wants to.
(I'm cracking up here btw. So dramatic of Buck to moan that it's been hard to get Tommy's attention when through the episode Tommy is repeatedly like "So... Do you wanna..."fly" 😏?)
Anyway, back to Kinard. Curious, how google keeps suggesting the result "canard" as the word is so similar.
Canard has several meanings but "fake story" is one, and his first appearance on the show showed him acting straight - but had a scene which suggested he might be "Team Jacob". Canard is also an aircraft - he's a pilot. And a duck... Maybe as in "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it just may be a duck"?
So my unhinged conspiracy goggles are telling me that this theme about being false, or an imposter relates to him and Buck. On the same episode they had an emergency about face blindness, and that resulted in a loved one's tragic demise. Hurting someone you love without realising it because you were just so confused and made the wrong choice.
Btw on a tangent!!! The fact that all these intensely queer scenes keep happening in kitchens rather reminds me of Eddie's breakup, in his kitchen. Ana did not want to leave him to deal with a disaster in his kitchen but finally came to the conclusion that fine. It's a mess, but it's your mess now.
(Btw WHAT is this Tommy/Buck ship name, I'm getting desperate. Tagged it Rudolph Air after Buck/deers/reindeers and flying. Help me out 😂)

Talking about the trust between Kat and Dom in their intimate scenes. It’s quite astounding. In the scene in ‘Afraid’ where WayHaught are lying on the floor in the kitchen naked under a sheet in their post-coital bliss and start pillowtalking, I took notice of how Nicole starts playing with Waverly’s necklace that she’s wearing and the sheet starts to fall open. Nicole (Kat) just quietly puts the sheet back in place so it doesn’t expose anything. It’s obviously improvised in the moment. The trust Dom displays in allowing Kat to do that. They don’t falter in delivering their lines whatsoever. No hesitation, no hitched breathing - no ‘taken by the element of surprise’ reaction. All trust.
Just little things like that show you the astounding trust that these two have in each other with portraying intimacy between their characters.

Finally figured out a key reason the 309 kitchen scene seems so flirty. It builds.
The music, specifically, I mean. I even went and compared it to the music that plays in the scene leading up to Buck and Tommy's kiss and it's very similar. The blocking is similar too, actually, now that I think about it. Yeah, as I think about it, there are a lot of similarities to that scene.
The blocking starts far away but gets progressively closer until they are very close.
It starts with an apology then transitions into jokey flirting.
The music is tender, emotional(/ref) piano that subtly builds as the characters walk closer to each other
It's not just about the body language or anything literal about how they're acting, they made it very misleading on a technical level. That's part of why the video games is a surprise - we had no reason to believe it would cut away, and within the idea of the scene continuing with them alone in the kitchen (as we also didn't know Chris was there), it isn't even about the flirtiness of the lines about them "fighting", it's about what can be simplified down to the music was building and they kept getting closer.
Walking closer isn't inherently romantic, of course, but with the music implying some sort of final, distinct payoff/culmination moment, not enough substance to the conversation to warrant an ending moment like that, and most importantly, within the idea that the scene would continue in the kitchen and not cut away, there is only one thing it could be building to with those simple two pieces of information: music and blocking.
From a writing perspective on the scene structure itself, had the camera not been set to cut away with everything leading up to it staying the same, the scene structure would have required exactly what you thought it did. Nothing else fits.
*(and they know it. The suddenness of the cut and reveal of Christopher is inherently a subversion. They made it feel more intimate by excluding him, thus not indicating a cut away, then built it up without providing "video games" as an option)
