About Hayley...

Let's go back to July of 2019. I've seen one of Hayley Kiyoko's interviews from 'I Wish' era where she was talking about her self-image. She had a concussion from years prior and had to suffer depression from it. But she is such a queen, she made it look like nothing much had happened and continued to be on tour, wrote songs, directed music videos, released an album and was just killing it. I'm pretty sure a lot was going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. In that interview, she talked about taking anti-depressants and having to deal with its side effects. One of them was gaining weight. As a person suffering from an eating disorder, depression and anxiety, Hayley addressing her self-image, specifically her weight -was really very important to me. I saw so much of myself in her going through the same thing at that time. July 2019, I cut ties with my best friend and I took it so badly that I had to see a therapist and take anti-depressants too. Mentally, it was painful to go through. I haven't had a concussion but ending a long-term relationship must have felt close to it. Long story short, I gained 60 lbs since. I didn't like myself. I lost motivation, I locked myself up in my room and spent the next 10 months being unproductive and just feeling sorry about myself. It felt like I was trapped in a different body. I couldn't see anything other than the new limitations I had to face. After a year, I finally was off the pills. But it wasn't until I lost my Grandpa last year that I started losing all the weight I gained from the anti-depressants :)

But our girl powered through it. 'I Wish' is really close to my heart because I loved how Hayley loved herself in that music video. The dancing, the color palette, the narrative, the music -everything. But I got to say, the behind-the-scenes videos will always be my favorite. It's such a bliss watching Hayley being so hands on with her art -despite of the personal stuff she must have been going through at that time. I respect her as a director, as a visionary and as an artist. Her work ethic and focus is just fascinating. I'm a new Kiyokian and if I ever came across one of her works around the same time I was going through stuff, it would have motivated me to stop being sorry for myself. If there's one reflection I have from all this, that would be realizing that shit happens and we have to keep going.

Wow. That was a lot. And I haven't even talked about how Hayley helped me come into terms with my true self! I'll be saving that on my next post. :)

So I was watching the vma’s and Hayley kiyoko came on. I was watching with my family and I was already flipping out mentally. I had to pretend to be straight and be like “oh wow she’s talented” after that I ran to my room and lost my mind and then I had to come back all straighty and be like “good for her, good for her”
