Hey guys! Coming out of hibernation to post this hah. I know that few will probably read this, and even fewer will read past this sentence, but what’s a little more self indulgence on my blog? Life has been pretty good as of late mixed with the bittersweetness of huge life changes ahead.

I went to Japan for 2 weeks earlier this May!!! This was HUGE because I had been waiting to do this for years and planning with my friends had been in the works for months to hash out an itinerary. We visited multiple cities in our time there and made the best use of airbnbs, hostels, and a ryokan experience! Literal DREAM exploring the cities, lush historic sites, mouth watering foods, quality of life upgrades through the convenience stores and toilet bidets (+heated seats), and unforgettable memories with some of the best friends I’ve ever had. I even tried raw sushi for the first time 😶 which is huge since I’m not very adventurous.

I saw Yuzu at the Cosme store haha. This is the first (and possibly last) time I’ve ever actually been anywhere close to his presence irl so it was pretty funny when I was scanning the Kose Sekkisei products and blinked in surprise to my right. It’s just a minor shame that I had to fly back before FaOI started!!

I would love to go back to Japan. My friends and I have already half joked about making annual meetups in Japan because of how much more there is to explore there. One can dream haha.

Sendai Holiday 2019, Part 7: other Yuzu sightings

This is the last part about my trip.  I arrived a few days before the weekend of ice shows, before the majority of fans arrived, so I could enjoy the sights with ease.  It got really, really crowded later on. :D

Photos above and below: Yuzu’s kimono, hakama, slippers and fan were on display at Fujisaki Department Store.  It’s the actual set that he wore to receive the People’s Honour Award from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on 2 July last year (2018).  The staff told me they borrowed it from Hanyu-senshu to put on display for a few days because they knew many fans would be here for the ice shows and would love to see it.  The display was in a shop window along a busy shopping arcade.  I went to see it on the very first day.  Many people walking by stopped in their tracks, exclaimed in delight (Hanyu-kun!) and whipped out phones to take photos. :)  The display was only from May 30 to June 4, and you could only see it during the store opening hours when all the shutters are up (10am to 7.30pm).

Below: The banner across the shopping arcade says ‘Celebrating the emperor’s ascension to the throne and the first year of Reiwa’.  When I was here last year, the banners said ‘Celebrating the 2nd Olympic gold medal of Hanyu Yuzuru’. 

Over the ice show weekend, there were huge crowds here.  A fan showed me her video where she and a large crowd were standing in front of closed shutters, waiting for the store opening time (10am).  And finally, the time came, and everyone was so excited, all with camera/phones out, and the store shutters rose s..l..o..w..l..y.... and the display was revealed bit by bit, starting from the royal slippers and slowly upwards...... I have never seen the opening of a shop window receive so much love and undivided attention..... :D

Photos below: On the 2nd floor, the store has some items made from the Sendai Hira, a hand-woven silk fabric, that Yuzu’s hakama is made of.  The sales assistant told us that the exact pattern of his fabric is not available but there is one that is very close to that pattern.  There are wallets, cardholders, neckties and table centrepieces.  She took out some wallets and a table centrepiece to show 2 Japanese fans and me.  I felt the fabric…. wow….. it was so beautifully smooth and luxurious.  I was so impressed!

On the 1st floor, there is a little tourist information corner where our Sendai travel ambassador welcomed us.  I  asked the staff: Why is it not the 2018 Olympics picture?  They said because the 2014 one is what they already have and so they decided to re-use it.   They also felt some fans might want to see the 2014 Yuzu again.  Ah yes, arigato, Fujisaki-san. :)

Below:  While shopping in another store nearby, I saw this!  Kose Sekkisei!  I was so happy and stood there watching the video for a while even though I have seen it a million times! xD

Last year, Yuzu said, “Please come to Sendai and spend some money.”   I am such an obedient fan…. I bought so many things that I had to buy another big bag to carry them home!   My shopping was mainly clothes from Uniqlo and all sorts of things from the discount shop Don Quijote ( -- they sell everything!  This was where I got my concert binoculars, mentioned in Part 1 of my holiday posts.)

I also bought some boxes of the lovely custard cake ‘hagi no tsuki’ from one of the shops in Sendai Station.  It is a snack that Yuzu loves (translation here) and it makes a pretty gift for friends and family back home.  It was one of the things that Yuzu gave to singer ToshI during the ice shows.  (ToshI mentioned it in his blog).

On the day of departure, I was waiting for the shinkansen inside Sendai Station, feeling a little sad that I was leaving...... Guess who I spotted outside the book store? 

He was also inside the book store.  I was very happy that he was here to “see me off” and I felt a bit better..... hahaha.  Goodbye, Sendai!  Goodbye, Yuzu! 

When I arrived at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), I had another wonderful surprise.  The departure area was filled with Yuzu!  First I saw him above a beautiful spot of flowers.  He made the place even more beautiful.  Then, I saw 3 more Yuzu on my left and 3 more on my right!!!  WOW WOW WOW!  And when I went to the duty-free shopping area, I saw another big Yuzu outside the shops and 3 videos playing his Kose CM continuously….. WOW!  I was so impressed!  So glad I had arrived at the airport very early and had lots of time to stand and stare. 

I had already tried some Sekkisei travel-size products and I like them a lot.  So I planned to buy the regular size ones in Japan.  Thanks to Ella for telling me to get them at the airport.  What happiness when I saw that a beautiful Yuzu clear file was given with 6500 yen spent!  I got one, of course. :)

kose is a well reputable japanese brand that has been around for ages, but i never wander into their products before, until i visited their launch event for essential souffle last year, and bought one to try. since it’s an event, my friend and i received plenty of sample products as well, i have yet to use them though.

i started using the moisturizer earlier this year, so it have been a few months now and i am actually almost done with it as well. i have never or barely switch moisturizers before, simply due to the fact that the one i have been using does a good job, but it is pricey though, and when i saw and tried this, i figure why not..

the moisturizer selling point is that it is light weight yet very moisturizing, and claims to suit all skin types as well. for my own experience, it is quite lightweight overall, but the absorption rate of the product is rather slow, so it does leave some sticky feeling on the skin, it feels like some products remain on top of the skin, instead of being fully absorbed. because of that, i realized that my foundation tends to become patchy by evening, even though i did not do anything differently, so i am guessing that it doesn’t play well with my foundation compared to my previous moisturizer. but ever since we are in the quarantine/lockdown situation, i also stopped wearing foundation, so it wasn’t too big of a deal..

in terms of providing the moisture that my skin needs, i felt that it does, but not as much as i would want it to be. so my skin does feels like it needed more especially if i’m in an air-conditioned place whole day, like the office.. and this could be why my foundation became patchy by evening..

overall, i just feel this as an okay product, might suit a person that needs less moisture, but not for me. it does have light fragrance which goes away once it is applied in the skin. i will most likely switch back to my old moisturizer or find another to try once i finish this bottle.

My 10 things

Every now and then, I would come across a random YouTube video detailing someone’s 10 must-haves or holy grail products, etc. In the spirit of the young millennial influencers, I, too would like to share the 10 things that I just must have in my life -- not that anyone cares, that is. Ready? Here goes:

1. Lush solid shampoos

As an eco-warrior wannabe, I just love the ingenuity of Lush Cosmetics’ solid shampoos. I love it so much that I ended up hoarding a bunch of them during my last trip to Melbourne (they’re a lot cheaper in Australia than in Malaysia). My favourite shampoo would be Jason and the Argan Oil, which smells oh-so-heavenly! They last a long time too. The average shampoo bar can last me up to three months!

2. Drunk Elephant NightBright Duo

I spotted this trial-size minis sometime last year and decided to give them a try. I’ve never used a chemical peel before (apart from the Pixi Peel and Polish) and since I love facial oils, I thought I’d give this one a try. Whaddya know? This duo is the bomb! I love how bright and clear my skin looks in the morning after using them both. I’m going to continue purchasing this duo for as long as they continue making them!

3. Botanist botanical treatment

In my search for silicone-free and sulfate-free hair care products, I decided to try on Botanist hair treatment (it’s more like a daily conditioner) after being convinced by a Sephora sales associate of its goodness. I’m so glad I did! Just one pump after shampooing leaves hair soft and smooth. I used to spend at least 10 minutes each day detangling my hair before going to work. These days, my hair just falls perfectly in place and I just need to run my fingers through my hair to smooth it out.

4. Neubodi bamboo charcoal leggings

I’ve been in search of high-waisted leggings for a while, as they’re some of the most versatile articles of clothing around. You can wear them to work and to the gym. Luckily, I just happened to stumble upon a buy-1-free-1 offer a couple of weeks ago and so, I got myself two pairs of black bamboo charcoal leggings form RM120 -- what a steal, right? I love that the leggings are thick enough not to be transparent when worn alone, but thin enough not to feel hot when worn during a workout. I also love the control it gives -- no more muffin tops under cropped tees!

5. Dorothy Perkins dresses

I’d say 90 percent of my clothes come from Dorothy Perkins. The brand has a good professional line of clothing, without being overly conservative or matronly. Best of all, I think their fashion sense is appropriate for my age (I love Forever 21 too, but their clothes too young-looking for me!). Also, I find that other brands tend to be rather inconsistent in their sizing. I love that I can always get a Dorothy Perkins dress in a UK size 10 (US size 6) and be assured that it will fit perfectly and flatteringly.

6. Nike Pro sports bra

I went into a sports bra-hoarding phase in 2014 and I ended up getting about 15 sports bras (which is a lot for someone who hardly works our anymore), with 10 of them Nikes. I’ve had my Nike Pro sports bras (the older model) for five years and they still like new. What I love most about them is that they keep my breasts from moving around without being too uncomfortably tight. They’re pretty low maintenance too, I’ve been washing them in the washer since I got them and they still hold up well.

7. Bobbi Brown lip colour in Roseberry

Back when we didn’t have Bobbi Brown in KK, I used to get myself a lipstick as a personal souvenir from their airport duty free shop each time I travel. I got one in the colour Roseberry during my transit to Sydney. It’s such a rich, beautiful colour that’s a cross between 90′s brown and plum berry. It brings out the gold in my light olive skin well and makes my teeth look whiter! I love the finish too, it’s semi-matte and opaque without being overly drying. I think this lipstick also makes a great multitasker as I also like putting it on my cheeks for some sheer colour.

8. RMS Beauty signature palette - Pop Collection

I love a mini makeup palette as much as the next girl, especially if it’s by a clean beauty brand. On days that I couldn’t be bothered to make an effort to look presentable, I’ll just slather on some sunscreen and slip my RMS beauty palette in my bag. I would then apply my makeup on my way to work -- usually in between traffic stops. And by makeup, I meant smearing on some blush and lip tint. 

9. Kose Sekkisei White UV Gel

I may be a late starter when it comes to the whole business of skincare (I didn’t start applying moisturizer until I was 31!) but I’ve always been pretty religious when it comes to applying sunscreen. Since I love the outdoors, I’ve been applying SPF 50+++ sunscreen for as long as I can remember and having disliked applying foundation, I found my holy grail in this watery gel sunscreen. I love that this sunscreen gel is fast-absorbing and non-sticky. It also dries to a velvety matte finish within a minute of application. You can also use it on your body and your face. Best of all, it doesn’t smell like sunscreen! I’ve been complimented on its fresh floral scent a several times and I’ll continue purchasing this forever!

10. Anna Sui Dolly Girl Lil Starlet EDT

I’ve had this fragrance for 10 years! In fact, it was my first fragrance purchase to mark having my first ‘grownup’ job in 2008. I love fruity citrus scents so I love this fragrance very much -- very fresh, young and energizing. I can’t quite understand why it’s rated so poorly on Fragrantica.com, but I guess to each his own. I’m almost finished with my first bottle of this fragrance and I have another one waiting. This fragrance is a limited edition one, so I’m glad I bought another bottle. And oh, the bottle is very pretty too!
