Are you surprised? Really, are you surprised?? This won't be a full series, I just wanted to do something for the kprewatch event and set maps are what I do best 🤷‍♀️ Especially because it involves watching the same episodes again and again very, very closely and going insane, which seems appropriate for all the brainrot VegasPete have caused me. The complete design:

A small note on my design choices/silly little observations: 1) The room where Pete is kept appears to be smaller and squarer than it is in the aerial shot. I'm guessing it's to accommodate the mood lighting and to give the room a more claustrophobic/cage-like feel. I've attempted to depict that empty space above relative to the dimensions of the birdseye view.

2) I'm not entirely sure there actually is a bit of a bump-out for the unseen room that makes up part of the main living space, but the apparent interior corner in the far right of this shot makes me think there might be:

3) There's fresh herbs growing in a planter by the fridge and I think we should all think about Vegas planting them and watering them and cooking with them:

4) There is one single shot of the bedroom where there might (a big might) be an armchair next to the bed at one point and I ran with it for personal headcanon reasons:

5) What is in this mystery room at the back of this shot?? There seems to be a welcome mat or something put down? Is that the true entryway?? A bathroom? A utility room? I don't know nearly enough about vernacular Thai architecture to make an accurate guess:

Rewrite: Starting over

Why?

Don't think about the parallels, don't think about Pete having an actual answer this time around, don't think about how "I can't run off to anywhere" isn't just Pete choosing Vegas, it's Pete deciding to give himself no other choice. He's not just refusing to run off, he's not allowing it to be an option. Handing the rope to Vegas, all over again.

If you run now, I'm alright with that.

Don't think about Vegas being unconditionally selfless for the first time and giving Pete a way out anyway. Don't think about how this is better than all of the apologies because they're literally rewriting their lowest moment, going back and correcting all the wrongs of the past in order to move foward.

I got nothing left.

For sure don't think about this fucking line getting reused. Reframed. Don't think about the way it was originally Pete who was split open, hurt and empty, the fight drained out of him. How this was Pete with nothing left to give. Don't think about how now the fight is out of Vegas. How his will to keep taking is gone.

I don't want to be your burden. I just want to follow my heart.

Don't think about this confirmation that staying isn't just what Pete needs, what Vegas needs, it's what they both want.

From now on, you're no longer my pet. You're the most important person in my life.

Don't think about how it's so important for to them that they have this conversation in full before they even consider touching each other. Don't think about the way healing is important to them. Don't think about how KP said "Can we start all over?" and VP went ahead and did this.

headcanon time!

i'm gonna say that Pete prefers to eat rice over noodles while Vegas prefers noodles over rice

in Pete's introduction scene, he's seen eating rice

this is food he's eating of his own will instead of what the main family gives the bodyguards in the cafeteria, because "it tastes way better".

for Vegas, my half-assed argument is that he cooked noodles for Pete in the safehouse

that means the safehouse is stocked with noodles, maybe because that's what Vegas likes to eat.

and now comes my favorite part of this headcanon. because what are Pete and Vegas eating in their respective "cry into my dinner" scenes after Pete escapes the safehouse?

Vegas has a plate of rice and Pete has a bowl of noodles. they're eating the type of food that the other person likes to eat.

they're not eating for comfort, they're not eating to fill their stomachs, they're eating to remember (each other). i might even go as far as to say they're eating for penance.

Ok, I've pushed this back twice now, maybe if I post about it, it will compel me to actually get started on it. There's no way I can maintain a rewatch of KPTS at the speed of an episode a week, with everything else I've got going on - not the way I want to deep dive and pull out nuances and look for connections.

So. Beginning in September, I 'm starting a KPTS rewatch at the slow crawl of 15 minutes of the show per week. Or, really, 1/4 of an episode per week (except Ep 14, which will probably be five parts). But that doesn't sound as catchy as 15-Minute Friday, in my head. Anyway, this means around 13 months to get through the entire show, if anyone else is interested in this wagon-train.

(I'm planning to watch sometime on Fridays. The thoughts will likely continue to pop up past that.)

Pete and Sub Drop (a short essay)

Or: how VegasPete could have had a much better time transitioning to a consensual relationship, if Pete wasn’t in unmitigated and intense sub drop for days after they had sex for the first time.

Okay basically I just need to talk about how KPTS perfectly depicted sub drop in Ep 13/14 without even trying?  I’m convinced the writers had zero idea that that was what they were doing but it is EXQUISITE and I need to talk about it.  It’s so clear they were intending to portray Pete being conflicted and pining after Vegas (and they succeeded!), but on a much much deeper level, supported textually, almost 100% of Pete’s behavior in the last 2 episodes could be attributed specifically to sub drop, and it’s gloriously executed.

In eps 13/14, Pete exhibits easily like, 75% of symptoms often attributed to sub drop.  Including: Fatigue, crying, sadness or melancholy, anxiety, agitation, depression, confusion, guilt, shame, aches & pains, stomach aches/nausea, general malaise.

Now, sub drop can happen to the best of us and for a myriad of reasons but there are always ways to mitigate the damage.

The 2 major causes of sub drop are:

Lack of (adequate) prep

Lack of (adequate) aftercare

In re: prep, they fully failed to prepare either physically or emotionally before the scene.  Pete was underfed/dehydrated/in pain (so not in a good physical state, generally), and in a heightened state of emotion (for literal days, all of the emotions) before/during the scene.  They had no discussion of limits or safety beforehand and essentially no foundation of trust.

Likewise, after the scene, there was essentially no aftercare: Vegas didn’t provide Pete with either skin to skin contact/physical comfort, or a blanket for warmth (they lay side by side but Pete is not held).  They did not discuss the scene, nor did Vegas provide Pete with any words of affirmation or comfort to assuage any feelings of shame that can linger after scenes (no, Vegas, telling Pete “do you know how sexy you are” does not count).  Pete was not provided sustenance – food/water/sugar – to help regulate the endorphin crash (Vegas tried, this one was not necessarily on him, although you can already see symptoms of drop in Pete – fatigue, malaise/hints of sadness – before Vegas leaves to go make food).

And then we see and incredible and exhaustive progression of textbook sub drop symptoms:

Confusion/Guilt/Shame: Pete asking himself why he let it happen, he didn’t like it

Depression/Sadness & Crying: Pete’s breakdown saying he feels useless

Agitation: Pete hitting himself + his explosive anger at Vegas (continuation also of shame, not feeling human)

Fatigue/aches & pains: We see this as Pete stiffly and shakily makes his way back home.  He is physically exhausted – bc of his journey?  Absolutely.  But I think that being in drop accounts for some of that as well.

Stomach aches/nausea + Crying/Depression: Pete trying and failing to eat his noodles, heightened emotions/depression can often cause a physical reaction, both his lack of desire to eat (yes it’s also an emotional response to the exact food he’s trying to eat being tied to his memories of Vegas, but I’m calling it)

General malaise: Pete’s lack of interest in the party Tankhun throws him, his entire demeanor when he goes out to get a smoke and looks despondent leaning against the pole.

When Vegas arrives, he starts the cycle again from the top, cycling through more or less the same series of emotions, although starting with anger this time, then going through shame/confusion/sadness/crying etc.  But by the time they get to the minor family’s attempted coup, I think most of Pete’s physiological symptoms of sub drop have faded/passed, and his emotional responses and actions seem to come from a place of a little more clarity.  

Of course there’s still a lot of confusion, bc the situation is still fucked up, but his anger in the garage, and then his confession by the pool, are clearly deliberate choices Pete makes, as opposed to his earlier behaviors after leaving Vegas.  The Pete who could only sit in a tub and lie, or cry in front of a bowl of noodles, or stand alone and try to smile at Yok’s, is gone; replaced by a new Pete awakened by Vegas – a man who isn’t afraid to demand what he wants because he knows it’s within reach.

So the tl;dr is this: I think the writing of Pete’s character in episodes 13/14 is truly incredible.  I have never in my life seen sub drop depicted so thoroughly.  And as someone who has had severe sub drop that lasted days due to lack of prep/aftercare, it looked something very much like Pete in this episode and I just….  Hats off to the writers, I salute you.

And there was something so appealing to Pete about Vegas' embarrassed anticipation and his body reacting to Pete's words. Like he was asking to be tickled in spite of feeling uncomfortable. Vegas’ discomfort didn't come from harsh words– but his struggle to take in the kind ones.

about the did boc save the best for the last, honestly, i'd love if that was the case but seeing how boc treats characters other than kinn and porsche (and especially vegas and pete compared to KP), i'm not holding my breath. up until now, other characters (notably vegas but pete and others as well) have simply existed to advance KP's storyline. they are just pawns with not agency of their own.

boc definitely wildly underestimated how popular VP is and especially how sensitive their storyline is. like, they've already taken a few traits from VP's relationship and pushed them to kinn and porsche (the whole no kissing thing from vegas to kinn and the way vegas lowkey wants porsche to be the one to kill him), meaning they either don't understand shit about the relationship between VP or they're just way too biased towards KP (or both). underestimating the popularity of VP is especially funny because apparently it's okay to use them for marketing but not follow through that marketing. like i know boc is new to the scene and kpts is their first series but come on now, even an idiot knows you just don't go using characters and ships to promote a series and then act surprised when people get invested in said characters. but then again, boc also promoted kpts as some sort of gritty mafia series, yet it's literally like any other bl romcom, with the exception that the setting is mafia world instead of university or whatever, so the marketing was definitely a miss, rather than hit.

we're 5 episodes from the end and i doubt boc would actually give us VP-centric episode(s), which makes me think that they're going to rush their arc and just give us a few snippets here and there of the actual storyline and leave majority of it off-screen. the only way this sort of storytelling would've been at least somewhat acceptable is if they started the arc earlier, but even then it would've taken careful plotting to make the arc and VP's feelings believable for the non-novel readers. but with only 5 episodes left, at least one of which is entirely dedicated to the final showdown between the main and minor families, there's just not enough time. and because i love to be pessimistic, i'm thinking the "finale" will start at ep13 so that they can leave some time for some lovey-dovey KP in ep 14 because god forbid we haven't seen them fucking enough already... which means the VP arc actually only takes 2 or 3 episodes which is just bullshit and something i'll never forgive boc.

sorry about this essay, i totally strayed from the original point but i'm just kinda pissed off about the way boc treats VP so yeah. short answer: they def didn't expect that VP would be so popular and they royally fucked up.

Your thoughts are exactly in line with mine. I am convinced too that it is really going to be ep 11-12, bits of 10 and bits of 13. None of it is going to be VP heavy, because there is enough Porsche drama to be covered as well, and kimporschay drama...

Also, i think i blame Pond for this majorly...not BOC per se. he is the scriptwriter and director.

And totally, it is about plot development, not about screen time. This was a good plot with immense character growth..but all down the drain.

Lastly, as Bible said "Spaceship".. we are sure gonna go on supersonic speed.. and well crumbs crumbs everywhere, with not an morsel to eat

Can we talk about novel! vs show!Porchay?

Please take this with a grain of salt because we haven’t actually reached the parts of the plot I’m going to talk about so there is still room for it to happen in the show, however unlikely it’s looking so far.

NOVEL SPOILERS AHEAD (obviously)

So far, show!Chay has been a little ray of sunshine while also making it clear whose brother he is, which novel!Chay did a little differently. In the original novel, Porchay was a little spicier when it came to his language, which can be very clearly seen in two parts of the novel.

“Do you think this will scare me? You're just being insecure. Because whatever you do, my brother will always be ahead of you. He's even better than you because P’Kinn won't follow him around like that if he's not!”

So the first is when he’s kidnapped by Tawan and takes it as an opportunity to mock his brother-in-law’s ex and hit him where it really hurts. The novel even mentions him having fun annoying him. He also calls Tawan a preschooler.

"Kim, you fucking bastard! Just try getting on with someone else, I'll pray to the Gods to make your dick shrink and rot!"

The second time is during the gathering of mafia wives (Tae’s words, not mine), which he tags along on because he’s absolutely convinced Kim is cheating on him (as far as we know, he was not). And he yells that out the car window as they drive away.

So, in conclusion, I really would love to see Baby Chay show his fangs a little bit. He’s been very precious so far, and I appreciate that, I really do, especially in a mafia show where he is the one shining beacon of purity and Wattpad-like joy amidst the darkness of moral ambiguity, but at the same time, it could be interesting to see him just SNAP at some point. He is Porsche’s little brother after all, and I would love to see him make at least a snarky comment.

Timelining KP

The time has come. I’ve spent the last few days organizing my notes as much as possible, so here it is. And it is a monster of a post, I swear I didn’t realize how long this was going to end up being.

HUGE NOVEL SPOILERS AHEAD

So the short version is this:

Ep 10 - VP starts, Chay gets kidnapped, further discussion of the mole, videos, Tawan is dealt with (30 - 33)

Ep 11 - VP episode, “fuck where’s Pete”/dead body, Porsche’s birthday (34 - 36)

Ep 12 - funeral/Return of the Pete, post-VP (36 - 40)

Ep 13 - parental issues, conversation re: Vegas  (42 - 44)

Ep 14 - boss battle, party (44 - end)

And now things get more specific, which is what was taking me so long.

Episode 10 (next episode)

Transition between the end of the Tawan arc and the beginning of the VegasPete/Everything-Is-An-Absolute-Trainwreck arc

VegasPete starts (obviously)

KinnPorsche will probably break up, but get back together by the end of the episode, potentially with the pool scene (although I know I’m setting myself up to be clowned with this one)

Kidnapping plotline

Porsche tries to move out/Big pushes Chay dumpster fire extravaganza

Basically everything up to the end of chapter 33 of the main novel (Tawan arc over, KimChay are a mess)

Further discussion of the mole (Kim knows Porsche isn’t the mole, everyone else probably realizes he isn’t the mole, so who is?)

Again, potentially Chay getting kidnapped (kinda hoping that’s what they go with since it was a really nice transition in the novel, not just for Chay himself, but it was the push KinnPorsche needed to talk out some of their issues and get back together, particularly for Porsche to be willing to hear Kinn out after the shit he pulled)

Maybe the whole thing with the sex tapes toward the end, or episode 11, or not at all, who knows

Oh and this would be the VegasPete episode that will probably feel the most uncomfortable because it’s really the beginnings of their relationship and even toned down it’ll be quite the experience

Not just for us but for Pete as well

We will probably see Vegas become more attracted to Pete beyond just being intrigued and amused

I keep coming back to this note that Porsche left.

Note: "I need to find an answer." (Episode 13)

Kinn: "I'll find every answer for you." (Episode 12)

Did Porsche pull words from Kinn as a reassurance that he does love and trust him, even though he's keeping a secret? Even though he left?

Like saying "you promised me answers, but I need you to let me find them myself."

Note: "I'll come back soon." (Episode 13)

Kinn: "No matter what happens, you must return to me." // "When you're done, return it to me. The gun, and yourself." (Episode 7)

It feels too similar to be a coincidence, doesn't it? Am I reading into translated dialogue way too much?

Is Porsche finally learning the art of subtlety, after living in Kinn's world all this time? Is it finally clicking? I love the idea that he's been picking up on Kinn's messages this whole episode and now he's sending one back.

Note: "Love you." (Episode 13)

Porsche + Kinn: "I love you." // "I love you, too." (Episode 13)

To me it feels like Porsche has been deliberately building this consistency, this reassurance for Kinn. It feels very intentional that in a three sentence note, I can find three potential callbacks to previous dialogue. Rule of three, anyone?

Telling Kinn that even though he's keeping secrets, he's not like Tawan. When Porsche said "I love you," he meant it.

As if if Chay leaving (returning) the guitar Kim gave him wasn't devastating enough:

Kim entered to Chay's house looking for lies, learned that Chay could be trusted, and left feeling warm.

Chay entered to Kim's house blind, learned that Kim could not be trusted, and left feeling cold.

Dialogue callbacks as audience insight

There were multiple callbacks to previous episodes in episode 13. I may say more on it if people are interested, but this particular piece is so interesting to me. I find Pete to be the most challenging character to read, and this helped guide me a bit.

(Well,) I don't like it. - Pete Ep 11, 13

I wrote a whole thing about this and double meanings for episode 11 - how this line can be read as Pete telling Vegas that he's not choosing to be treated badly, that he (and Vegas) haven't chosen the abuse they've endured. They didn't choose to be treated as less than human. I think "I don't like it" has a similarly profound meaning in episode 13 - except now we're on the other side of it. Pete chose to stay. But... did he choose abuse? (The answer is no. Of course not. If anyone's asking or unsure. The answer is always no.)

Then why didn't I say no? - Pete, Ep 13

This line. This line I find particularly devastating because we see Pete chained up and alone again. Preceding it we get flashes of Vegas's anger at his father and he's being loud about it. It makes me wonder if Pete knew what was coming, he knew that anger was about to be directed at him. If his father was at all like Vegas, Pete has seen the way these things cycle firsthand. To me this line feels like an "I should've known better."

Let's look at episode 12:

But you like it, don't you? When I am like this. How do you like it? - Vegas, Ep 12

I wonder if these are the questions Pete's answering when he says "I don't like it" in episode 13. Because when Vegas asked this, it was in the context of him acting very, very human. It was in the context of Vegas treating Pete as a human. And even then, Pete didn't respond until Vegas gave him explicit permission to choose. But in hindsight - it's possible that Pete looks back on these questions and thinks Vegas was asking him whether he liked the abuse.

Vegas is both an abuser and a victim of abuse. The question is, can he and will he change like Pete did, or will he keep letting anger control him like both of their fathers?

What are you looking at? Eat! - Vegas, Ep 13 What the heck are you looking at? Why didn't you eat? - Vegas, Ep 11

Humans don't grow without setbacks, and the process of change often looks a lot like falling back into old habits. If not for outside forces of the plot convincing me that Vegas will change, I would have very little hope in him. Especially with his track record of deception, which Pete is also aware of. Even if I trust that Vegas is on a path towards growth, I also trust that, unless Vegas can make this change immediately, it would be largely at the expense of Pete's wellbeing.

Anyhow, you're just my pet. - Vegas, Ep 13 A good pet listens to his owner. - Vegas, Ep 11

We have Pete who has survived and escaped an abuse cycle (this show has deliberately framed abuse as a cycle in a way that I think is quite clever), now scared as hell that he's going to choose that for himself in the future. He's caught between the care he has for Vegas and his own self-respect, and he knows he can't really be okay without either of them.

I got nothing left. Not even my humanity. Need me? For emotional projection, like a pet with no feelings? - Pete, Ep 13

It all comes together nicely for me in this episode. I love the way Vegas's demeanor shifts when Pete says even his humanity is gone, when it finally clicks. I love Pete holding Vegas accountable, I love him saying, essentially, that he's not pretending to be weak, it's not about weak or strong - he's getting worn down because he's human.

I'm a human, Vegas. - Pete, Ep 13

People are affected by the way they're treated. Vegas became a monster in response to his dad treating him like one. Pete refuses that for himself when he leaves - even if it's arguably the most difficult thing he's ever done. I'll wrap this up with one final thought.

Give yourself up to the main family. Mr. Korn is not cruel. It's up to you, Vegas. It's your choice. - Pete, Ep 13

Pete has been offering Vegas a third option since episode 11 (more on this in my VP Communication Follow-up post). In fighting, there's winning and there's losing, success and failure. Two options only. The framework both of their fathers laid out for them.

Porsche let Vegas see Pete on the condition that Pete was armed and Vegas was not.

Porsche doesn't know that there's a sexual/romantic aspect of it in the same way Pete didn't know when Kinn punished Porsche in episode 5. With that in mind, he'd have no reason to think Pete was in danger with this setup.

Pete is a trained bodyguard, he can physically hold his own, especially with a gun against an unarmed opponent. On top of that, this situation is entirely different - Pete isn't on a spy mission, he'll go back to the main family that same night some way or another, and if he doesn't, Porsche will know exactly what happened to him. But it won't happen, because Vegas knows he's dead if that happens. And I would assume that Vegas agreed very easily to Porsche's request - maybe even offered it himself - which was probably reassuring to Porsche. Vegas is also alone and doing all of this in secret - which Porsche is also likely aware of.

I've been trying to figure out how Porsche would've allowed this meetup to happen and here it is. it wouldn't be a hard deal to drive with Vegas at this point and it seems like a very Porsche thing to do.

Vegas realizing that Pete is human is integral to his own healing!! Until he recognized that, in his mind, escaping the cycle of abuse was achievable for Pete, but not for himself.
