WIP Wednesday
For this WIP Wednesday, have a short section from Thuiskomst, (Homecoming) featuring Inej coming back to Ketterdam after six weeks. Kaz greets her at Fifth Harbor, but ends up having issues with a hug in public in the rain. She meets him back at the Slat...
“I think I can offer a better hug now,” he rumbled, and Inej could hear the yearning there.
She stepped forward even as she replied, “I’d love that.”
This time they were dry, with no hats in the way, and no one to see them press together. Kaz wrapped her in his arms, and Inej was home. She returned his embrace with every fiber of her being. His lips brushed the top of her hair as he murmured, “Me mangave pa.”
It took Inej a moment to realize what she’d heard. Oh my sweet man… your pronunciation needs a little work, but I adore you. She wasn’t about to let him go, even if she wanted to stare at him with shock for telling her in Suli that he loved her. With her face nuzzled against his soft black dress shirt, she replied softly, “Me isto, me drage.” Me too, my beloved.
They stayed entangled in each other’s arms for a few long minutes. Krai decided she needed to be a part of their reunion, and was twining around their legs. The cat was largely ignored as they communed with each other. Kaz laid kisses on Inej’s hair, lightly massaging over her leather vest. She returned the favor, rubbing his lower back. A low, satisfied groan came from him. Aside from his lips on her scalp, no skin touched yet. Just getting to be within the circle of his arms again was captivating. Inej inhaled, reveling in Kaz’s scent. But there was also the smell of hutspot and sausage and fried dough, and her stomach reminded her aloud it had been a long while since lunch on The Wraith. Kaz chuckled, the delightful sound vibrating her cheek. “I think you might be hungry, my beloved.”
Inej pulled back enough to be able to gaze up at his face, admiring the sight up close and personal. As much as she wanted more in the way of contact with him, she had to admit that eating was a solid plan. “I am. And you got us a lovely dinner, from the looks of it.”
“There’s one problem,” Kaz said with a devilish glint to his eyes. He was far more at ease now.
Saints, I missed him like this. “Oh, and what’s that?”
“I am fairly certain I have to let you go in order for us to eat.”
Inej laughed, and watched as his face went tender, the glint in his eyes replaced with softness.

By day, Derek Harker is your average middle aged bloke and a jack of all trades, doing odd jobs around town for the locals. By night, she’s the drag queen Kitty Bator, a proper east end woman with a filthy sense of humour and a love for everything leopard print.
Following a messy divorce from his ex husband, Derek is trying to get himself back out there and find love again, but it’s hard when everyone else on the scene seems to be taken or half your age!

I had no idea former Manchester gangster Des Noonan (not Dom) was a committed anti fascist. He was part of the Noonan crime family that were linked with at least 25 murders.
United has always had a steady anti fascist tradition, whereas Man City went the other way - lots of NF and BNP - until the Kool Kats and others got rid
I always find it interesting when gangsters get involved in anti fascism. The most fascinating are the Goldberg Twins who were fierce. Cruel, apparently. Put it this way, the Krays didn't want to know em.

Never before in her life had Moni considered herself a goodie goodie two shoes. Well behaved, compliant with teachers, studious - yes. But after several teachers stopped to ask her if she was lost as she sat outside waiting for Ron to be released from the office, she was left to wonder if others viewed her like that.
She had felt duty bound to wait for him and thankfully her last period before home was a study one leaving her the option to do so. He was only dragged in because of her - well, indirectly, she had to remind herself. She wasn't to blame for them.
As the door finally opened she found herself at a loss for what to say. With her lunchtime wit long having abandoned her and remembering his abandoned kit-kat fingers in her bag, she pulled them out and extended them again to Ron, offering a small but warm smile. "You forget these."
An hour and a half they’d had him in for in the end. An hour and a half of Ron sat deadpan, staring at the head teacher as she tried every contact number she had available in hopes of raising one of his parents for a chat about his latest infraction. She’d had no luck. Mr Kray – Ron’s father – would be in the pub by this point in the day, and his mum would be at market. Neither of them had a mobile phone and Charlie, elder brother to the hoodlum with the identical twin, hadn’t given his actual number over when he’d been asked for it six and some months back during the last of these little talks about his little brother.
It was his work phone for fuck sake.
Why would he be passing that number round.
In the end, Mrs Wright had had to just let him go with his suspension slip; threats to have him escorted off the property if he didn’t leave double quick following him out her door. It was something of a miracle the friendly face waiting for him didn’t seem to hear the older woman full pelt suggesting she’d call the police if he didn’t pick up the pace. Ron wouldn’t have forgiven her that; would’ve had her car tyres as payment. As it was though, all was well. She just stood there, did she from the lunch table. Held out the kitkat bits he’d been snacking on before being bundled. Smiled at him like he was something better than what he felt he was. It was a helpless thing, smiling back. He couldn’t stop himself.
‘—Y’ll start gettin’ a reputation fer ‘angin’ aht wiv bad’ns, y’carry on like this.’
The words were kindly; many more than he’d spoken in the hour and a half since lunch. Ron looked at her levelly for a few moments, then at the chocolate, then back at her face; all sapphires and ebony and porcelain and…Clipping himself off that train of thought, he gestured to her bag.
‘Walk y’ome, miss?’
It wasn’t technically home time. Not really. But if she couldn’t leave with him now, he knew he’d make good on the offer if she wanted him to. He knew he’d wait by the gate for her.

Story of A Hero-  28
[First] [Previous] [Mobile] [Next]
Kat felt like her best friend had gone through hell in a handbasket these last few weeks, and so after training one night, she informed him that, if he wanted to just take some time for himself to just… relax?
She would be understanding, even if his break meant that she couldn’t go on patrols. He was much more important to her than some petty rivalry, and to be fair, the winter break brought lots of people to Casfeld, and especially to Cirque Astera. Perhaps it would be best for her to concentrate on that job. She loved the prospect of being a hero, but man did she also love the stage. The thrill, the applause, the music…
A new show was being organized, and while Wesley took some time to breathe, Kat was more than happy to envelop herself in the job that she’d been kind of neglecting.
Answers would have to wait.
Or so she thought.
The new show required new outfits. Instead of having the outfits mailed, Trypp had Kat go pick them up from Hitomi- It was, after all, ridiculous to pay so much for ‘shipping’ when they were made just on the other side of town. As she was coming back from the shop and passing by a bus stop, she noticed- once again- a shock of silver. But this time it was, fortunately, not a pipe being thrown at her, but a young woman with silver hair curled into herself, reading a newspaper. Seeing Skye not in her hero armor was strange- she hardly looked like herself, and Kat had to stare for a moment to ascertain whether or not this was that witch or just some… random Chinese chick who just happened to have long, silver hair tied in a purple bow.
She looked so pale, even under the cold’s red kiss, and the bags beneath her eyes matched the dark bruise on the side of her face. Rivalry, frustration, annoyance… Everything faded at such a sight, leaving only concern and worry; After all, few things left bruises like that. Most of them were other people.
“Say, you like comics, miss witch?” Kat asked, casually sliding onto the bench beside her. Skye jumped, clutching the paper tightly to her chest. Her startled expression quickly soured to frustration. “Buzz off, kitty cat. I don’t have time for a rematch,” she hissed, flicking her wrists and the newspaper out again to return to it.
“Not looking for one, I’m on errands for my other job… Who hit ya? That looks kinda bad.” “What part of buzz off don’t you get? Leave me alone,” Skye grumbled. Kat frowned, letting out a sigh. “I can’t. Look. Some/body/ hit you, and I already failed one friend. I’m not standing by and letting anyone else get abused…” she spoke softly, and as she did, she unwrapped her scarf, then handed it to Skye. That coat she wore looked like it had seen better days… And those better days had happened way before either of them had been born. “ And here. You look cold.” Skye eyed the scarf for a long moment. It looked warm and soft, and she was so tempted, but… “Can’t. If he saw me with that, he’d skin me alive,” she mumbled. But Kat smiled softly and wrapped it around her anyways. “Wear it until you need to go, then. Give it back before you leave.” Skye sighed, and to Kat’s surprise, complained no further. It was warm, and soft, and smelled faintly of makeup and hot chocolate. “So. Let’s try this all again. I’m Katherine Kray, it’s nice to meet you, Skye,” she said. Skye scoffed before she could stop herself, and her expression turned sheepish before she chose to turn away, biting her lip. It was faint, but Kat still noticed the shift of her body; a foot forward, one poised to push off… The body language of someone ready to run at any moment. “No, it’s not nice to meet me. You don’t know what you’re saying. I am Skye Belladonna.” “Belladonna…?” “My father is Isaac Belladonna.” “Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!” Kat nearly shouted, horrified.
Skye pushed off her feet and made to run, but she’d only managed to stand before she froze and registered what the other girl had said. “You’re… Sorry?”
“ Your dad’s a monsterous psycopath hated by the entire city, who tried to murder to death some of its most beloved heroes. Guy like that can’t be winning any father of the year awards so… Yeah,” Kat said, nodding. If he was Skye’s father… the bruises, the sick look, the trashy coat… They all made sense. “You hero types are all fucking weirdos,” Skye grumbled, but the way she said it sounded more fond than annoyed, “I’m the daughter of your family’s biggest enemy and you’re… sorry.” “You’re not responsible for your father’s actions anymore than I am for mine,” Kat expressed. It took Skye a moment to realize that she meant Kat’s biological father, and not Bayesh, and she realized that yeah… She could understand where she came from. Their boats weren’t so different, after all.
There was a quiet between them, when Kat suddenly stood up and stretched. “Gee, sure is cold out. I could really use a hot chocolate. How ‘bout it? Wanna grab a drink? My treat.” Skye hesitated, uncertain. But Kat continued to smile, just so genuine and foolish… Who was Skye to not take advantage of anything good thrown her way? “I’ll throw in a cookie~!” Kat sang, grinning, and that sealed the deal. “Make that two cookies and you’ve got a deal, kitty cat.” “Damn. Hard bargain, miss witch. But I accept.”
--
It was no Cafe Nocturna, but the cafe they walked into was warm and priced decently. The old lady at the counter stood when they walked in, and seemed about to yell something, when Skye piped up. “Yeah, yeah, I know. No loitering. We’re getting something, sheesh,” she grumbled and, though taken aback, the woman accepted their order and let them sit in the cafe, although she warily watched the two of them. “Warm things on cold days are always so nice, especially hot chocolate,” Kat said, holding the cup with both her hands. Skye did the same, but mostly to warm them from the bitter cold. “You sure seem to like hot chocolate,” Skye pointed out. The scarf she’d been lent was covered in stains. “Yeah… It’s kind of my dad’s go-to comfort drink, so… I grew up with lots of fond memories of sitting with Bayesh drinking it when I was sad. Now it just… Feels like home. I don’t know if that makes sense,” Kat said, shrugging. “I can’t relate, but I can understand,” Skye affirmed. That was alright. Kat hoped that someday Skye would find something that brought her comfort the way hot chocolate did for her. Weird to think that she’d been spending so long trying to find a way to fight this girl, when she really wasn’t all that bad once she actually spoke to her. Speaking of ‘speaking’... She knew that she and Wesley had agreed not to speak of any of this, but knowing that Isaac could be involved… Kat thought it best to re-evaluate that stance. Lives could be at stake. With Isaac, they always were.
“Hey, you not gonna eat your second cookie?” Kat asked. Skye had eaten one of them- pretty much inhaled it-, but the other sat at the side in a paper bag. “No, actually, I was going to give it to my little brother. Seemed kind of unfair that I get something nice and he doesn’t,” she said, staring at it. “Your… Little brother? That the boy always with you?” “Yup. His name’s Ausra. I know he doesn’t seem like it, but he’s a really precious kid. Problem is mom died when he was so young that… Well, he’s not…” “Not… What?” “He doesn’t see himself as a person. Just a tool. That’s what dad’s beaten into him… And it hurts me to see,” Skye said, lowering her voice. Not that her dad could hear her, of course, but she just… didn’t feel comfortable talking about this where they could be heard. Attention was the last thing the Belladonna children needed, at least, that was what Skye thought.
“Oh.” A tool for another’s end. That was what he’d said. Wesley had said that he sounded sad as he had spoken the words, and Kat had just dismissed him as being overly sensitive… But now, everything clicked.
Isaac couldn’t show his face in Cassfeld. From the stories she’d heard, the last time he had, he’d threatened to kill or do something even worse to Kero, and Bayesh had just… snapped. Whatever he’d done, it made it so that Isaac had to go into hiding, but… His children? They could. So they were his scouts, but what were they scouting? She had no idea. And Skye… She had been taunting her and teasing her, sure. Kat was always throwing herself into situations without looking. She remembered how almost impressed the Witch had sounded when, instead of directly attacking, she came to ask them what they were doing. She’d said something about ‘teaching tricks to a cat.; Tricks…. Like… Asking questions? Looking before she lept? Ascertaining and understanding her enemy? Or more important… Differentiating between what was an enemy and what wasn’t?
“You know,” Skye said, pulling Kat out of her thoughts, “It’s kind of nice, to talk to someone who gets it. I mean, it’s nice to talk to someone who isn’t a near-soulless shell or a fucking peacock, but… You get it, cuz you’re a big sister. Someone who would do anything for their little brother.” “I guess, yeah. I mean- There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for Will.” Even have others think poorly of her, think she was evil, fight other people… Hell, she’d pretended to be perfectly fine after everything and hid all of the pain from him for years after the incidents. “He’s been all weird lately.  Or, err- He’s always been weird. Since mom died and all. He never really got a childhood, all he’s ever known is fight, fight, fight. But… yeah, he’s weirder than usual. One day, he’s his normal gloomy, silent self… and the next, he’s so much more talkative, opinionated. And that’s super wonderful, but… he also seems so… melancholy. I don’t think he’s realized I noticed. Sometimes I catch him mouthing words before or while I’m saying them… and that scar down his face. It wasn’t there the day before, but he won’t tell me where it came from… And- Oh wow. I just infodumped all this shit on you, didn’t I?” She scoffed, more at herself, and took a big swig of her hot chocolate, hoping maybe occupying her mouth with drinking might make her stop talking. But Kat didn’t seem to mind one bit. “He’s got time manipulation powers, right?” she asked. Skye nodded. “Yeah. All evidence points to ‘he’s done this shit already’, and whatever’s making him this way is something that hasn’t happened yet for us. I just want him to talk to me, you know? Trust me with what’s going on with him. Not like we have much time left, and I want him to spend it knowing for sure his big sis’ been with him every step until the last.” “Wait, hold on a sec. You don’t have much time?” asked Kat, startled, She knew she should be staying on topic- this was obviously important, damn it!- but this sounded so much more urgent, and there was a somber certainty to Skye’s tone that made her skin crawl. “Well, yeah. I don’t need to be a time traveller or a mind reader to know we’ll be killed when we’re of no more use. But he doesn’t just kill people, you know. He turns them into meirs and absorbs their powers. Poof. And unlike me, he won’t have any qualms with using my wind to literally steal the wind from your lungs. He plans on making his big move winter break.” That. That was a lot to process. Kat sighed. She’d think about this big bomb later, but right now… “Why not leave? She asked. “Where would we go?” Asked Skye in rebuttal. “Mom’s dead, Ausra’s supposedly died in the whole Kray lab fiasco and so nobody’s looking for him, and all of our mom’s family, who we never met, mind you, live in China and may or may not even know we exist. Top o’ that, I don’t have a degree or a phone or an address, so there’s no way for me to get a job to keep us safe and fed. Least here we got a roof over our head and sometimes we get food… Most importantly, say we did leave. It wouldn’t matter if he was seen. He’d come at us outta pure spite and kill anyone harboring us, too… I can’t endanger somebody for trying to help.” A sad but pensive silence settled between them as Kat tried to recall all of the courses she’d been given by Angel on such things. So many Meirs were created in despair, when someone felt like they were terribly trapped in a situation there was no escape from. There were shelters with secure locks and guards, but they were made to keep enraged and violent humans out, not murderous monstrosities like Isaac. But then… “Oh. Well duh. What’s the only thing Isaac is scared of? You two should come stay with us!” Kat thought it was an absolute brilliant idea, until Skye shook her head again. “Ausra is convinced Bayesh will kill us on sight. We’re Isaac’s children, after all. And we’ve attacked his daughter.” “Ausra thinks that. What about you?” “I…” Skye started, but stopped, frowning, so that she could recollect her thoughts. “I don’t know. On one hand, I remember your dad. Sweet guy, really funny. Loved us dearly… But Aus’s certainty makes me wonder if it’s something that happened in the past… Or past future, or whatever. And if we’re going to die, I would really like it to be by my father’s hands, just so that he can really have the faces of his children’s pain engraved into his memory and the stains of our blood on his hands haunting him for all of eternity.” Fascinating way of thinking about it, Kat thought. Very spiteful. There was so much she didn’t understand about Isaac and his children. But there was a lot she understood about her father, too. “My dad’s got this fascinating belief that killing people is merciful. Leave them alive, and they get to suffer forever with the mistakes they’ve made. Death lets them off easy. But also, he doesn’t really blame kids for their parents’ mistakes, either. “ “Sure. But maybe he’ll hate me for mocking and beating up his daughter,” Skye pointed out, but Kat gently shook his head. “Pfft. He doesn’t know that, and what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. You’re totes safe in that regard. And when your dad comes a’ knocking, we’ll all be together. And we can kick his ass. Together.” “We can’t, I-” Skye started, but Kat cut her off. “You don’t wanna endanger us. Except we’re already in danger as it is, right? Your dad shows up with whatever he’s planning, we’re gonna take him down anyways. This way, with you and your brother around, all of our chances are better.” Skye looked down into her cup, no longer steaming but still warm in her hands. She thought for quite a while before sighing. “It’ll be difficult to convince Ausra. I can’t even get him to tell me what happened to his face…” “If it weren’t for the situation, I’d say be patient… But…” The girls sighed in unison. Time wasn’t exactly on their side. Nor was the ringing of the clock beside them. Each chime made Skye frown more deeply. “I should go find him. I’ll see what I can do. And… with any luck, I’ll be seeing you around, Kitty cat.” She downed the rest of the liquid in one sip, then handed Kat her scarf back. “Wait.” Kat’s words froze her on the spot, and the raven haired girl stood up quickly, walking with her to the exit. “Two quick things. Dunno if it’ll help, but I can speak to my dad about your brother’s worries beforehand. And two- Besides me and Wes, there are three of us. Your dad shows up, I think there’s also a plan to contact a vigilante group from Southvale to help. Dunno if that’s any help to you, but…” Skye shrugged. “It’s worth a try.”

Pengalaman qiamulalil sendirian
27/2/21
Cerita semalam, solat zohor dan asar di raub. Sebelum tu dah berhenti tdo sebelum masuk bandar raub 30minit sbb mengantuk waktu tghr (hari Mula2 puasa).
Sebelum sampai simpang ke bandar K. Lipis aku singgah berbuka puasa. Aku decide nak solat dimana2 hentian terakhir sbb jangkaan xsempat sampai rumah sbb ada nak jumpa customer.
Semalam aku drive sampai K. Krai nk bg customer produk utk masalah datok ya yang uzur dan baru kena strok 3 hari. Sampai jam 11mlm.. Lepas bgtau cara2 rawatan Metramedic kepada cucunya (wakil), dia rakam dan faham, lepas tu aku post di FB Metramedic Hasmadi Ezlly dan socmed.
Rasa mengantuk sangat2 dah.
Aku faham dan tahu risiko tapi aku nak cepat sampai sbb nak solat.. Aku xnak tangguh takut berat dan tak terdaya nak laksanakan serentak sekali dgn solat qada..
Paksa gagahi drive utk sampai.. 10 kali tak kurang aku terlelap.. Byk istifar. Akhirnya sampai juga jam 12:30mlm di kampung. Alhamdulillah..
Kejut ma, dia buka pintu.. Ayah duk kat dapur cari biskut utk makan.. Aku x banyak cakap terus masuk bilik.. Baring. Tertdo. Hampir jam 12:45. Niat nak solat masa bangun nanti. Sgt berharap dpt bgun awal.. Aku minta Allah jaga aku.
(Sepatutnya aku start writing kat sini tp aku nak cerita apa yang berlaku sebelumnya..)
Tersedar jam 4pg. Alhamdulillah. Byk masa untuk beribadah.
Aku bangun Suci diri.. Jam420 mula ganti solat fardu
Solat sunat wuduk, qada solat zohor 4 rakaat, qadar solat asar 4 rakaat, jamak dan qasar isyak 2 rakaat, magrib 3 rakaat, qada solat zohor 4 rakaat, qadar solat asar 4 rakaat, zikir... Doa.. Dan mengaji
Lepas tu aku capai hp tulis dulu story ni. Jam 5:18..aku nak sambung solat sunat tahajjud..
Solat sunat taubat, aku Tiba2 terlintas aku pernah siksa haiwan (lotong-monyet muka putih). Cerita lama dalam 5tahun lepas. Monyet ni sesat atas bumbung rumah xtahu dari mana. Aku nak tangkap, tahan pukat.. Monyet ni lari2 lompat atas bumbung rumah dan bumbung kilang keropok.. Akhirnya berjaya tangkap.. Aku takut tekan dia dgn kaki kuat2, Monyet ni meronta kuat lagi kuat aku tekan..akhirnya dia slow.. Aku tgk dia lemas xboleh nafas.. Xlama lepas tu mati... Aku pendosa.
Relate dgn solat kenapa keluar cerita ni? Aku tertanya2 macamn aku nak tebus dosa dgn haiwan?
Akhirnya aku terlintas.. Mungkin bisikan daripada Allah... Aku diminta bersedekah setiap hari xkisah berapa pun... Allahuakbar.. Allah ajar aku dalam setiap perkara untuk berubah menjadi org yang Berguna kepada masyarakat.. Aku harap Allah x tarik nikmat yang Dia telah berikan pada ku.. Syukur alhamdulillah
Cari probio HD drop, ada tinggal stok emergency kat Kg.. Titik dalam mata sambil zikir
Solat sunat rasa semua lancar tiada apa2 penghalang..aku dapat rasanya Allah mudahkan segala urusan aku dari segi ibadat dan urusan dunia.. Inshaaallah amin
Aku tulis nota ni sehingga abes witir.
Lepas solat sunat taubat, solat hajat dan solat witir... Semuanya berjalan lancar.. Lagi 5 minit masuk waktu subuh.. Masa tulis ni org tgh azan.
Aku nak sambung qada fardu subuh, solat subuh, qada fardu subuh.. Zikir. Quran..
Aku nak keredhaan Allah.. Nk jalan kan kewajiban dan nak bayar segala hutang2 aku denganNya selama ini. Apa yang aku harapkan aku kekal sihat dan sentiasa berada dalam LindunganNya.. Amin

Six(ish) Sentence Sunday
Tumblr media
From my newest WIP, Verbanden & Geesten, the 11th story in my Kanej Wensen series...
In Chapter 1, Jesper & Wylan visit Kaz and Krai cat at the Slat:
Wylan, deciding no one needed him at the moment, moved himself and the satchels against the wall out of the way. When Krai followed, he sat cross legged on the floor. Some part of his mind pointed out that he was an upstanding member of the Merchant Council, sitting on the floor in the Slat. It was generally drowned out by the rest of his mind saying what amounted to ‘Kitty’. The cat in question immediately made herself at home in his lap. Inej wasn’t lying about her fur either. So soft.

. . . 🌍 GezmenAdam.com 👍 Facebook: gezmenadam 🐦Twitter: gezmenadam 📽️ Youtube: cemalcolak #gezi #gezgin #yolculuk #yolhikayesi #kamp #cadir #kamphayati #doğa #wanderlust #otostop #gezirehberi #nereyegidelim #yolda #yoldaolmak #gezmen #gezmenadam #tur #cemalcolak #gökçay #radiowanderlust #russia #guamka #railway #rail #green #natura (Guamka, Krasnodarskiy Kray, Russia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0tCxLKAyXr/?igshid=6fhcijempb76

STORY OF A HERO- 24
[First] [Previous] [Mobile] [Next]
“Again!” “Ow.” “Again!”
Wesley laid on his back for the umpteenth time, frowning up at the ceiling. Kat stomped her foot down, the noise echoing off the walls of the otherwise empty training hall. “I need a break,” he mumbled. She let out a huffy sigh, but offered him a hand to help him stand. “You- are as relentless as your dad,” Wesley complained breathlessly. He stumbled over to the corner where he’d put his water bottle and took a big gulp from it. Kat, however, continued to fight, now swiping at nothing since her practice dummy was laying back down on the floor a little further down. “I’m going to take that as a compliment, because my dad is the best hero,” she said. Too engrossed in her practice, she didn’t notice the door open behind her. Wesley did, however, and he waved at the curious William peeking in. He did his best to stay out of his sister’s way and sat down with Wesley. “Are you done your break yet? We can’t let those losers win again!” She shouted angrily, then turned… only to see her brother sitting there with a confused and concerned expression that matched her own. “Win again? Did something happen?” he asked. She froze, accidentally dropping her scythe. It turned back into Shiiro, who hopped around the floor in frustration. Kat looked over at Wesley, hoping he’d help, but he just gave her a sheepish look. “Weren’t you like… Busy reading that stuff Tessa gave you? What’re you doing here?” Kat asked, sitting down with them and ruffling her brother’s hair. He did not look amused. He crossed his arms. “I hit a snag in my research. You’re avoiding my question, that means you did something you’re not supposed to.” “We met a couple of metahumans on our patrols that kicked our butts,” Wesley replied softly. He’d hardly gotten the words out before Kat shouted at him. For once, her anger didn’t phase him, and he shrugged at her. “We’re the only people in here. I know we agreed not to tell anyone about this… But Will isn’t exactly anyone. He knows what this means to us and I doubt he’s going to blab and get us fired, right?” “Fired… because you got into a fight?” “Yeah,” said Kat, still glaring at her friend, “That, and because we got our butts embarrassingly kicked in our first ever fight. Can you imagine, if Angel heard that? Disobeying and losing? She’d send us packing.” William was quiet for a moment, but he eventually shrugged. “You know… Everyone loses a fight or two sometimes, especially their first. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. When you win, you win, but- “When you lose, you learn. I know, I know. Heard it a thousand times at least,” Kat cut him off, pouting. “Why’s that sound so familiar?” “Kero,” the Kray siblings replied in tandem. Wesley chuckled at that. “So… You lost. Step back, analyze why you lost, and learn from it… So, what did we learn?” William asked. Kat frowned. Here was her little brother, lecturing her like she was the child. She should feel frustrated, but a proud warmth bloomed in her chest. Mature. Kind. Helpful. This was the kind of person her little brother was growing to be. Someone who acknowledged mistakes and grew from them. Someone who thought of others. Someone who helped others grow, too. She almost missed Wesley’s reply, so lost in her thoughts. “I guess… Dodging isn’t going to win a fight. But I just…. Panicked. I didn’t know what else to do,” he admitted. “But that Skye girl only dodged Kat’s attacks and she won, cheep?” Shiiro piped up, hopping between them. William looked first to Shiiro, then to his sister, awaiting an explanation. When none came, and instead of replying Kat stubbornly crossed her arms and looked away, Wesley took it on himself, reluctantly, to answer. “She fought a girl with powers over wind. She couldn’t get a single hit on her and wound up just… tiring herself out while the girl stood there.” “She was mocking me!! It was so frustrating!” Kat defended loudly. “Oh. That makes a lot of sense,” William replied. “What? What’s that supposed to mean?” “You have a habit of being carried away by your emotions.” “I do not!” “Yes, you do.” “Do NOT!” “You’re doing it right now, sis.” “Oh.” The realization was sobering. He had a point. Here was her little brother, doing his best to help them even though he had come here to get help from them, and she was raising her voice at him because she was frustrated with the situation. Like a grumpy bull. Just as Wesley had said.
“So what do you suggest we do?” she grumbled. It was a hypothetical, but, of course, William had an answer. She should have suspected that. “Emotions clouding your judgement… Looks like it’s a problem you both have. And fighting each other isn’t helping. It’s just making it worse… So what we need to do is… eliminate triggers!” He exclaimed this cheerfully, proud that he not only remembered the lessons Angel had given them, but had found a way to use them. “So- Wesley panics and Kat gets angry. Confidence in one’s abilities keeps panic at bay. Work on actually using your powers aggressively instead of defensively. Maybe on a practice dummy… But then move on to moving targets? I bet if you asked Trypp, they could give you great pointers on that, and maybe even train with you. Avoid training with Kat though, at least on that.” “Why?” “Because you hate getting wet and would do anything to avoid it. We’re working up his confidence, not working it down. And you give everything 100% all the time… Besides. YOU need to stop practicing on Wesley. You need to start fighting someone who’s above you in skill level so you can work on not getting frustrated when things don’t go your way immediately…” Kat crossed her arms at that, despite knowing her brother had a point. She had to admire the way he phrased it, making sure not to rub in the fact that Kat was a better fighter than Wesley, but still managed to point out the main problem there. Kat WAS a better fighter than Wesley. She’d gotten complacent with winning because she always won against him, and now, suddenly, there was someone she couldn’t just swing her scythe at, and it frustrated her that the win didn’t come easy. “I can’t help but wonder if, like other items, headphones would vanish when you transform, even if your outfit doesn’t include anything on your ears…” William said thoughtfully. “Headphones?” asked Kat. Had she missed something? Had he continued speaking when she’d been thinking. “Yeah! Your circus training allows you to maintain your spatial awareness even with blaring music, right? Even if you can hear someone jeering at you, you never stop what you’re doing and always put on such an amazing show… So listening to music might help you keep your emotions at bay,” he suggested. It was worth a shot, she supposed. “I’d have to make sure that the music is upbeat and that it’s not too loud, otherwise people could time my movements to the beat.” “Dubstep’s unpredictable?” William suggested. She smiled and ruffled his hair. “Not sure music will help me hit little miss air witch, but it will help in general.” “UNPREDICTABLE!” Wesley shouted, perking up, “That’s it! Use your roulette ability. She can’t exactly block something even you don’t know what it is!” “Angry as I am, I’m not going to set the poor girl on fire or something. They’re annoying, but seeing as how they could obviously kill us and just haven’t yet, they’re not worth making villains out of us.” William hummed and pulled his notebook out of his bag. “Actually… I might be able to help in that regard. Resonance has a color, and that color always correlates to the ability that’ll be granted. Therefore, theoretically,  the color of your resonance when activating your roulette ability would predict what it’s going to do… Ironically, a list of colors and their abilities was what I was working on when I hit the snag.” He searched for the page and, when he found it, set it down on the floor so all three of them could see. “So, what’s the snag? Maybe we can help,” Wesley suggested. They probably knew very little on the subject, but William had helped them try to figure things out, so try was the least they could do. “Well, the biggest snag is that the inventory list and all of the information on adex themselves was missing. It was likely stored somewhere else. Maybe where all the adex themselves were stored? I don’t know. The point is, every Adex had a code, like how you would code inventory, or something. And every code has a meaning, they’re not just random numbers and letters. In fact, they’re the color. See here, Shiiro was APW-7. That PW designation is his color, pure white. However… That A? I have no clue what it stands for. It appears three more times, but it has nothing to do with color, because subject 14’s adex is navy blue, and 24’s is golden.” “Golden?” Wesley repeated, eyes widening. “Yes. gold. Why?” “Do you know what ability a gold adex grants?” Kat gave Wesley a confused look. He suddenly seemed super interested by this, and she had no idea why. “Just a hunch, really. But I think the boy with gold eyes might have a gold Adex.” Shiiro chirped, jumping onto William’s notebook. “You’re right! He does! Gold resonance so strong even normal people can see it glow in his eyes! Cheep! Can’t say I remember what gold does, it’s kinda rare. Only ever met one of my kind that was gold,” he explained, gleefully. “Can all Adex see resonance, Shiiro? You and Imshael seem to be able to, but… Harley hasn’t said anything about it.” “Of course. How else would the first of us have known which humans to fuse with? I think it just takes age to know that what you’re seeing is resonance, and not all humans can see it… Oh! Wait! A! That letter!” He jumped up and down again, excited to have found the answer. “Age! It probably means age, or old, or ancient? We were taken by your scientists when we arrived before we managed to find suitable hosts.” “So… A… Indicates the first adex?” “The first adex on Earth, yes! I am not /the/ first. I had parents, and they had parents, and so on!” That… That meant that this big round ball of goofy, cheery feathers hopping about William’s notebook was… Over a century old. The humans were silent, so Shiiro decided to speak once more. “Is everyone okay? You’re all being very, very quiet. I hope you know that yes, while I am very old for human standards, and that my life is now interconnected with Kats and will end when hers does, I am super happy to have travelled all this way, even with all I’ve been through, to become a part of you and your family! You might be a small blip in my life, but you’re the happiest blip!” “I’m happy to hear that,” Kat said fondly. She scooped him up and gave him a kiss on the head, from which he chirped gleefully. As astounded as William was to hear about all of this, he had to admit that getting his notebook back from being a bird podium- intact, thankfully- made him very happy. A… It meant Adex born before the experiments started… That wasn’t really useful for his research, and he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment. Fascinating that there were Adex around that old, but…
Wait a second. Imshael had expressed that, though there was no school for Adex, they had learned things about themselves with age. And here was probably the oldest Adex on planet Earth, chirping gleefully as he was given kisses. “Um… Shiiro? I know you said that you didn’t know what the Golden colored adex does… But do you happen to see any missing from my list that you DO know?” he asked. From Kat’s hands, the bird turned and examined the list. “Oh, yes! For instance, Kero! His resonance is maroon, and that’s not on your list, and…”
Kat frowned as the chirping continued, and had to resign herself to the fact that her weapon was unavailable for the rest of the night. Then again… She’d never really used Kuroko as a weapon...

Story of A Hero- 23
{First}{Previous}{Mobile}{Next} Jazz was sitting on Will and the twins’ table monday at Lunch. She held a mysterious cardboard box on her lap and, for a moment, Will was confused…
Until he saw the familiar green lightning bolt logo. Instead of confused, he became excited, and nearly bounded over to the box. Jazz grinned at him, but continued to hold it close even as he approached. “So… Weird thing, but my sister came outta her room this morning. She gave me this. Made me promise not to let anyone but you touch what’s in it. And then, she ate breakfast with me and walked me to the bus. I don’t know what this thing is, and I don’t care. But I know you did something, and because of it, I got to see my sister, and hear her laugh and stuff. So whatever this is? You take good care of it.” She spoke with a serious tone, yet also seemed happy. Will was happy for her.
He nodded. “I know you said you don’t care to know, but… that box likely has my parents’ research,” he explained. “Oh,” Jazz said, understanding blooming on her face. She gave him a cheerful smile. “Explains why it’s so important… And why she’d only trust you with it.” Even though she didn’t know Will, as far as Jazz was aware. He held the box with the same care she had. “She trusted you with it, too. I think that’s a good thing?” “I think so too.” Their conversation ended when Percy and Lily arrived. She rejoined her table, and they ate together. It was hard to concentrate through the rest of the day, with the anticipation and fear all welling up at once. What could it contain?
-x-x-x
The box contained an external harddrive, as well as a note, written in green glitter pen. William decided to start with that first.
“Fun fact,” it read “A friend of mine has ‘Anaesthesia Awareness’. Waking up during the herein described procedures caused damage to his Adex. (Read up on subject KX-023) This break is what allowed us to break free.
I believe in you, William.  Let the mistakes of our past become the tools to build a better future.
Tessa Nickols (xxx-xxx-xxxx. Let me know if you need any more help. Give my number to Kat too. I miss that brat.)
PS- For privacy reasons, many names and faces have been redacted. Hope you understand.
PPS- Hard drive password is your sister’s middle name.”
Diana. The password was Diana. William wondered if that was done by Tessa or by his parents, but he only wondered briefly.
The amount of stuff here was… Intimidating. He didn’t even know where to start. He had to take a deep breath and center himself to even try to tackle this. Maybe… weed out the unnecessary stuff? Grant applications. Letters to investors. A bunch of other money related things. That was irrelevant to his studies. It went into a special folder. Just in case. Facility descriptions… As the document began with nothing but maps of the facility, William was going to ignore it, until he noticed that there were several pages. The building only had four floors, if he remembered correctly. There should only be four pages, if it was nothing but maps.
“As this is a foreign field of research, much of our equipment has required upgrades, and some custom equipment has been needed to advance our research.”
The section below the maps continued on, describing what kind of upgrades and changes had been made to existing equipment. It was all incredibly fascinating to William, but one very specific section caught his attention.
It described, in great detail, a special instrument created to measure and observe resonance.
“Tests have revealed that Adex exude a special energy. It has been named “resonance” due to the way it reacts within human subjects. With this, resonance can be observed and measured. This advance has increased the success rate of forced symbiosis to 98.7% Forcing symbiosis with two subjects who’s resonances do not match almost always results in MEIR-Type entities, and/or loss of one or both subjects. Forcing symbiosis with a subject that exudes no resonance at all results in failure 100% of the time.”
“So resonance has… types. And this thing they made shows them in different colors,” he said to himself, and scribbled this fact into a notebook. To his surprise, Imshael hopped onto his desk. “Hello,” they greeted, before curling into a ball near the keyboard. “I want to help.” “You… want to… help?” William repeated, confused. The words themselves were not confusing, but rather the ‘who’ they were spoken by. Even after the first time he’d heard Imshael during training, they’d still stayed so quiet Will almost forgot they COULD speak. “Well, yes. Bayesh and I feel I may have answers to questions you might have. I am, after all, an Adex. You’d assume I would know a few things about myself.” “I think assuming that would be kind of silly. Humans have to learn about their bodies, I’m sure you guys do, too. But...unlike us, there is no school for adex.” “True,” they said, swishing their tail to and fro, “But you learn things with age. Like the fact that resonance’s color matches the color of the adex itself. The color of the thing within you. It also tends to dictate what kind of abilities we will grant. I’ve come to notice white adex mean white light, for instance.” William scribbled that down, and gave her a few small pets as thanks.
Then, he continued to read.
None of it was nearly as interesting as the resonance testing equipment, and most of it made him grumble in disgust. The schematics for Meir containment cells. The dampeners that kept the ‘subjects’ from using their powers. All kinds of resonance sapping weaponry.
“Oh. Hey, maybe that could be useful for… I don’t know, fighting bad guys?” Harley suggested. For a moment, William considered keeping the documents and then sending them to Angel. She’d know what to do with them, and how to make them into weapons that could be used to fight metahumans and meirs without the need for HeroNet. But William turned to Tessa’s letter once more, and sighed. “We promised we’d never let anyone else see this research, Harley. I’m not going to betray Tess’ trust…” William reminded her. Harley looked down, and would probably frown if her muzzle would allow. “Oh. My apologies. Shall I leave?” Imshael asked. William looked down to them, then back to the screen, and then to Harley. “Immy’s technically not another person… They’re an Adex.” While true, William gave a sigh. Technicalities didn’t sit well with him. But he had Tessa’s number, so he decided to ask her.
[Will] Hi Tessa, this is William Kray. We received the hard drive safely, but my father’s Adex wants to help. You said not to let anyone else see what’s on this drive.
[Peony] Oh! A wild Will! Right down to business, I see. Call me Peony, kay? Wow. She answered pretty fast. But Jazz did say that she never left her room, so she likely always had her phone.
[Peony] Would Kat trust this Adex? Knowing who your parents are, I would say there’s no one more trustworthy. But ultimately, I kept this stuff safe FOR your sister.
[Will] Right. Thank you, Peony.
Kat… She wouldn’t be angry if William let Imshael see the data. But she WOULD be angry if it was used to hurt anyone. So, ultimately, Wiliam chose to put a pin in it and continue to read.
He moved on to the folder that contained actual test results.
“KY subjects?” William read out loud. There were twenty entries, but no indication what the KY stood for. William had to examine them, and after a few, he noticed the pattern.
“These are… Older than me. The subjects were all adults… This must be the initial testing for forced symbiosis… Look, this person is deceased,” he pointed out. The other four sets of eyes looked to where he was pointing.
“Of course. Adults can’t fuse with us. The necessary changes can not be done to an already fully formed body. That it took them twenty people to notice,” Imshael grumbled. “Well… I guess… The good news is that they only resorted to using children because nothing else would work… Granted they could have just… Not continued their research on forced fusion.” “Not every question needs to be answered,” Harley agreed. “Like… I don’t actually want to know how many bugs I can fit in my mouth?” While Imshael and Harley continued to list off examples of things they did not need to know the answer to, William skimmed through the rest of the KY files, but they were ultimately more of the same.
He moved on to the KX subjects. Those he knew. “Kx-01 subject. 12 year old female. Volunteer, informed consent (See risk waiver) blah blah…” William read out loud, frowning. “This girl became their first Meir… But they ‘learned a great deal about Meirs, how to contain them, and how to destroy them’ thanks to her… I… Don’t…” William had to step away for a moment. Destroy. They meant kill. Murder. End a life, maybe even two. He couldn’t bear to read about the tests they did on the meir. He closed the file and moved on. More Meirs. More deaths. Some children saved at the cost of their Adex being destroyed. Few successes, until... “This one’s different. KX-14,” Will eventually said, his brow relaxing from the ever deepening frown he’d had previously. “Different how?” Imshael asked. “Successful symbiosis with ANB72… Result, the ability to mimic the abilities of other Adex. KX14’s ability has allowed us to predict the type of abilities an adex will have-”...Basically, this says she’s the reason we know Adex colors correspond to what kind of power they’ll give. She also… ‘claims to see a faint colorful glow’ coming from the Adex.’... She could… See resonance?” Though Harley was wagging her tail enthusiastically,  Imshael showed no sign of interest. Their tail just… swished lazily. “Immy, there’s people who can see Resonance! Isn’t that cool?” he asked, putting his hands near them, but they didn’t move. “I suppose?” they said. William frowned. “You knew already.” “Yes. Sorry. I see you’re excited. I do not mean to detract from your excitement.” Imshael’s apathy aside, William continued, noticing that there was a small note at the end of kx-14’s file. They weren’t the only person to see Resonance, but it took until subject 19 to realize that this phenomena was a real thing and not a stress induced hallucination or something of the sort. From there, there was a lot more successes. 22, however, was an outlier.
Succesful at first, the stress and isolation turned them into a Meir. “Dr. Evergarden decided to use the Meir to test out the powers of successful subjects, beginning project Nightmeir.” It linked to the project, but this William refused to click. He continued.
Kx-023. William picked up Peony’s note and looked again. She’s mentioned this subject, told him to look.
“Subject awoke during procedure. Panic caused a small scuffle until he could be sedated again. No lives lost, but Adex suffered damage. See Incident reports.” And dated later, a note had been added stating :”Subject releases small amounts of Resonance even with Dampeners. Without dampeners, subject can not control his ability and destroys anything he touches. (Re: Request- Wall repair in B2-B wing,)” And a little later still, “Subject experiences blackening of veins in hands (What??) Sent to medical examination immediately, but no medical reasons have been found. He is perfectly healthy. Maybe this is caused by the Adex damage? Continue monitoring.”
William looked back to the floor plan, on an inkling that this wall that needed repairs might be one that resulted in the collapse.
Unfortunately, he realized that he was not an architect and couldn’t really figure it out, so he returned to his reading.
There were few deviations. Meirs, successes… He could tell that it was around there that they’d managed to get the Resonance measuring machine working. Hell, even the number of consenting subjects rose the closer he got to his sister’s number.
There wasn’t much to learn, but he did notice a naming pattern for the Adex, and understood they were named by their color. From there, he compiled a list of Adex colors and their abilities… But there was one strange code he didn’t understand. Some adex codes started with an “A”, but they were few. 14, 24,72…
Wait.
72? 72 was…
Kat!
